Yes, it's that time again

THT has alerted me to the fact you all are approaching 5,000 posts, which means it's time for a new thread. It would be my pleasure to create said new thread. Before I leave, however, I'd like to provide you a picture of the always-lovely Mariska Hargitay.
Have a nice day.

Yep, bubbs, you are on the list. You know about that list don't you? I never expected that out of you. :) Looking forward to a fun weekend and getting to meet michael. Fingers crossed it doesn't rain.

I'd hate to miss a rain game. Can we get snow for the Iron Bowl?

We can have snow if you come sit in our seats with our six grandchildren. :) But, I would rather have snow than rain! Prediction now says cloudy for Saturday with just a 20% chance of rain.

somebody's bound to have heard why Carlson was able to kick 54 yard FG with 10 yards to spare, but couldn't get KOs deep no matter which end of the field. What's the scoop? I don't buy Gus's swirling wind coachspeak nonsense.

12:51 PM
Blogger michael said...

He kicked one pretty deep into the endzone but they up and returned it anyway.

He should probably be benched.

1:08 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I bet he pulled a muscle doing pilates.

1:18 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

There was an article where it was "explained." Two parts: swirling wind down there (spurious?). And the fact that they kept running them out of the end zone (because we are last in nation on kick coverage). They decided to just start kicking them high. Didn't realize it at the time, but the article pointed out that it worked. Of the 5 done that way, they averaged a start on the 25 or 26, with the longest starting on the 27. Much better than when they were running it out.

1:44 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'm a lot more comfortable when he kicks them out of the end zone. He did that a lot the first half of the season.

1:50 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I'll freely admit that I don't completely buy the story. I do wonder if there isn't some injury (however minor) that's not letting him kick out of the back of the end zone.

2:03 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'm telling you, it was the pilates.

FootballStupid.com's reporting in this instance is so bogus it would make CNN proud.

By the way on Saturday when we were walking back to the car, we walked by Jarrett Stidham on Gay Street. Looked like he was with family. But I was whispering all like , "Kids! look over there! It's Jarret Stidham!" and they were like "Who?" and I was like "The quarterback you just saw play!" and then their minds were blown that we had just walked by THE Jarret Stidham.

Georgia Hate Week again already?

8:02 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Cincy, I'm very thankful you didn't make me play cornhole.

E-Bro, Hate is 52 weeks, 1 day, and 6 hours (+/-) every year, and it ain't at Georgia.

The last 400+ miles yesterday were bumper-to-bumper. I was so exhausted when we got home that I had to watch the Iron Bowl just to get energized.

8:41 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I see encouraging headlines on Kerryon, but I don't believe a word of it. His next snap from scrimmage may be in the NFL.

10:13 AM
Blogger michael said...

He seemed pretty emotional about the injury during the game, like it was a big deal. Maybe an idiot trainer misdiagnosed him on the field?

10:43 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'm looking for big games from Devan and Malik. I want our defense to play their best game of the year and score. Twice. Indoors with no wind, I want to see every AU kickoff go out of the end zone.

12:20 PM
Blogger michael said...

I want to see Kirby Smart cry.

12:35 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Why would you want him to cry tears of joy? I'm no turncoat. I'm hoping AU will win. GO TIGERS!

Oh, and I want to see offensive holding called when Mr. Holland is being tackled or clotheslined.

12:57 PM
Blogger michael said...

Go Dawgs!

Also, Kerryon acting like he's "just banged up"

https://auburn.247sports.com/Article/Auburn-Tigers-running-back-Kerryon-Johnson-Shoulder-is-just-banged-up-heading-into-SEC-Championship-Game-against-Georgia-Bulldogs-111244401

He says he cried because he got emotional when the fans started chanting his name. Do you believe him, THT? Or are you calling this fine Auburn Man a liar?

1:07 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Just banged up comes in all flavors, including seriously hurt bangedness. Seriously banged up and getting emotional when the fans chanted his name are not mutually exclusive. He was absolutely telling the truth. I do not anticipate him playing much, if at all.

1:19 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

if we lose, it will be bubbs's fault. He's obviously not AUl in.

We aren't going to score 40 this time. Our defense is going to have to play lights out and we must force TOs and avoid committing them.

I'm calling it 26-20, AU evens up the series.

2:12 PM
Blogger michael said...

If we hit em in the mouth early, they'll crumple. We'll do that.

Auburn - 55
UGA - 2

2:24 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

They block our last extra point and run it back to avoid the shutout?

Unacceptable!

3:19 PM
Blogger michael said...

Actually, we are going for two to rub it in and Stidham throws a pick-2, sinking his draft stock and ensuring he comes back next year.

3:48 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Acceptable!

michael's scenario was the one I had envisioned with that score. Great minds think alike. Or maybe like father, like son, according to Sylvia.

Blogger bubbs said...

Back from traveling around, and doing stuff.

I'm nervous about this uga game. Again. I'm with THT. KJ will suite up and then not play much or at all.

Anyone know where I can get some good cast iron ware?

10:18 AM
Blogger michael said...

Mills Fleet Farm had a good deal yesterday on the dutch oven I want, but I didn't jump on the deal. Still waiting on getting a deal at the Buy More from THT, who may or may not be my dad.

10:58 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think he'll be on the sideline rather than in a suite, but I don't think he'll be wearing shoulder pads... at least not the football uniform kind. That's my guess. Gus is going to coach the best game of his career, so it won't matter.

11:07 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

michael, Mills Fleet Farm just called to tell me they will no longer supply the Buy More with cast iron dutch ovens. We are about to strike a deal with a new supplier> who promises their Caste Irony Dutch Ovens are da bomb!

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

10BEASLEY!!!

12:08 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

what other 3 teams would y'all like to be in the CFP with AU?

I'm fine with facing Clemson again. I'd rather play tOSU than Wisconsin. Oklahoma's offense scares me to death. I don't mind seeing ua-t again but, unfortunately, that comes with an angry dwarf, something I don't want to face. I think it would be awesome to nip UGA in SECCG and a little other chaos gets them in CFP where we can take the series lead. Mark Richt seemed to have our number lately, but the U doesn's scare me.

1:04 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Personally, I want to be the lone SEC team. I want bammers to be on the outside looking in. If we can get out of Atlanta with a win, none of the other non-SEC teams bother me too much. I think our team (especially with the time to get healthy) is just that good.

1:23 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

the non-nice person in me would love to see our defense punch Mayfield in the mouth and shut down OU's crazy good offense.

1:43 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I think there's a good chance we'd get paired in the semis. And I'd be okay with that.

Then a Clemson rematch for all the marbles? Wouldn't that be sweet? Do what bammer couldn't last year, and close the deal all the while getting revenge from earlier this year.

1:48 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think it would be wonderfully chaotic if TCU beats OU by 20+, tOSU nips Wisconsin on a last second FG set up by a blatant officiating error, and the U beats CU (not sure the right amount for maximum chaotic effect), and USCw drums Stanford by 40 points.

2:42 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Still not feeling so good about this weekend.

10:23 AM
Blogger michael said...

You have reason to not feel good about this weekend. I didn't feel good about the original UGA or bama game, but I actually feel good about this one. That is a bad sign.

10:39 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Do the players even have this game circled? I feel like they forgot to circle this game.

10:46 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think they marked it with a square. Does that still count?

10:58 AM
Blogger michael said...

I think the problem is that they've probably already used up most of their circling power. You only get full circle strength on two games a year. Very much diminishing returns after that.

11:03 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

An unnamed source tells me that Georgia triangled this game. They don't stand a chance.

11:10 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

They also put three circles around ND and five circles around UF. A few weeks ago they also nonrefundably circled Alabama. I'm pretty sure they are hosed.

11:48 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I felt good about UGA and bad about Bama.

Starting to think how I feel about games may not matter.

12:56 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Are you Auburn, E-Bro?!?

1:12 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I felt good about both and I feel good about this weekend despite the absence of #21 and #36 and possibly even #9. Somebody is gonna tote the rock for AU. We are going to get supergreat efforts from our OL and DL to win this game.

1:23 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

No, bubbs, I am Spartacus.

1:30 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

- No home field advantage
- Down to 3rd string (or lower) backs
- uga is looking for revenge/highly motivated
- We're the hunted
- Gus might start trying to call plays again

I see lots of reason for concern/ways we could lose this game.

1:36 PM
Blogger michael said...

Ebro may not be Auburn, but he is a true Auburn Man. I'll swear by that.

Kerryon's yards after contact have been critical in keeping drives on schedule, as they say. I think the offense will sorely miss him if he's not in.

2:06 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

- Gus might start trying to call plays again

I'm suddenly feeling severe pangs of anxiety... whatever a pang is.

Only one I have a real beef with is Wisconsin. Even though we took the game to OT, we just never seemed dialed in for that game for whatever reason.

That's my scientific opinion on Gus's bowl record against Power 5 teams, anyway. And, hey, I'll take another bowl win over a Group of Five team if I can get it.

Gus's success always seems to depend on the health of a single player. I remember when Lou Holtz, prior to 1978 Orange Bowl, suspended players responsible for almost 80% of the points the team had scored that season. Arkansas was a 20+ point underdog to Oklahoma, but won by 25 points. That's the kind of coaching I'd like to see from Gus. Adapt and win with who's available to play... healthy.

I would say Lou's upset of OU is an outlier and not the norm.

I didn't have a problem with Gus losing to OU or Bama last year without a starting QB. Those were elite teams. It's really just the 2015 and 2016 UGA losses that bother me.

To be fair, though, once upon a time, JJ was able to step in for Nick a couple of times in 2013 and 2014 and help get us wins.

Now, we seem to have a decent backup QB in Malik and we're better defensively, so maybe it's something he'll better be able to overcome in the future if he has to, which hopefully he doesn't.

2.0 tells me it is now 33 degrees and pouring rain on top of the <1" snow/sleet. I just need roads to be snowy or wet and not icy around midnight.

We got a lovely snow on Friday! The perfect kind, hung in the trees and on the grass, but roads were largely unaffected. Mostly gone by this Sunday morning.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

We got next to nothing. However, I was thankful the roads were not icy for my drive home from the Buy More. Spending the night there is not an option. I'll walk the 11 miles if necessary.

Christie's auction house probably needs to fire someone, or at least reassign them to a much less responsible position.

I've deleted most of them; only the most recent 5 are still in my Trash folder. These were messages posted to a book listserv. But keep your hopes up, someone just crossposted it to a Map Library listserv. I'm not sure what order these are pasted.
-------------------

The catalog description is still online here (p. 95-98):
http://www.christies.com/PDF/catalog/2017/CKS14301_SaleCat.pdf

About the paper:

"Printed on laid paper, a half royal sheet, 305 x 432mm (sheet at widest), bull’s head watermark surmounted by cross and entwined with serpent (height of staff and cross 56mm, bull’s head indistinct and cannot be measured accurately, but probably 101mm in total height, horns indistinct but probably 40mm in width), mean chain line width 34.7mm.

The height of the watermark is shorter than that found on the Hauslab-Liechtenstein-Bell-University of Minnesota copy and shared with the copy sold in these rooms in 2005 (115mm). The Kraus-Bavarian State Library copy does not (contrary to the description in two Kraus catalogues) have a watermark, although two chain lines 30mm apart can be seen. The Offenburg copy is without watermark, chain line width 26mm."

Why didn't that set off alarms?

And what about the ink ?

KALAMOS BOOKS

Christie's description of the size of the paper on the Drescher map: “Printed on laid paper, a half royal sheet, 305 x 432mm.” Although not mentioned, the images show the chain lines are horizontal.

Christie’s description in 2005 of the four copies of the map then known:

1. The Hauslab-Liechenstein-Bell-University of Minnesota copy … On full sheet, 252 x 380mm (9½ x 15 inches).

2. The Kraus-Bavarian State Library copy … On full sheet 290 x 420mm (11½ x 16½ inches).

3. The Offenburg copy… On full sheet, 314mm x 378mm (12½ x 15 inches).

4. Copy sold in 2005 … overall maximum dimensions of the paper 180 x 344mm, trimmed to the margin of the gores. … watermark identical to the Hauslab-Liechenstein copy … [Presumably a cut down full sheet].

See http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/martin-waldseemuller-c1470-c1522-world-map-4516015-details.aspx

All the maps then believed to be genuine were on full sheets presumably with vertical chainlines. Isn’t it curious that the new copy is on a half sheet with horizontal chainlines? Seems to assume that the printer had a hodgepodge of paper around which he cut to size as needed. Seems unlikely and inconsistent with Stevenson’s observations on paper use and, in any event, something that should have raised suspicion. In 2005, Christie’s stated “Precise conclusions on the origin and precedence of the various papers used for the Waldseemüller gores require further study.” What happened to the further study?

This is starting to sound like a movie caper - a combination of the forgeries of the “Freeman’s Oath” and the Galileo and the TexFakes. H.P. Kraus descriptions are usually very accurate. Is it possible that the real Kraus - Bavarian State Library copy of the map was stolen and replaced with a forgery?
By the way, can the glue spot as well as the ink be analyzed and dated?

In the eyes of the press quoted by Joel K. he has ceased to be a dealer and is now a “storied collector”, whatever that might be. Canonisation next? Theodore Besterman, for whom he was “a dealer named Kraus” (a well-deserved slight in the cicumstances of their acquaintance) will turn in his urn.
