News of the day, 12/2
Hey everyone. We've got two significant events happening tonight. Auburn has accepted an invitation to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl (Dec. 31). The Tigers will play Clemson.
Both Tommy Tuberville and athletic director Jay Jacobs are supposed to participate in the conference call addressing the Tigers' berth in the Atlanta-based bowl.
Ticket information is here: CHICK-FIL-A BOWL. I'll have information on how you can tap into Auburn's bowl allotment shortly.
We like the undefeated Hawaii Warriors. We're the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.
Awesome teleconference. I'd say 75% of the q-and-a portion was dedicated to questions about Tuberville's job status and Jay Jacobs' opinion of Tuberville's job status. The uneasiness was palpable.
Here's The Best Thing we heard from Jacobs: ``There have been a lot of things blowing up, if that's what you call it, but there's never been any doubt in my mind or Tommy's that he's going to be our coach for many years to come."
Here's Tommy's big follow-up to that statement: ``I concur."
Not sure what to make of that. The legal definition of concur, as applied by SCOTUS, means two entities agree on a conclusion but differ in the reasoning used to draw said conclusion. I think that's exactly what you're seeing here. Tuberville probably will be at Auburn next season. That's not because he loves Auburn so much. It's that he doesn't have any other reasonable options available right now.
Tuberville votes in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. Here is the top of his ballot:
1.) LSU
2.) Oklahoma
3.) Ohio State
4.) Hawaii
5.) Georgia
On Hawaii: ``It's hard to understand why they don't have a shot at the end. If we had a four-team playoff, they could get a shot at it."
The Auburn women's basketball team won at No. 14 Arizona State today, 75-69. The Tigers, ranked No. 18, are 8-0. This group has the potential to be pretty good. I'm planning to talk with a few of the principles for a few stories this week.
The men's basketball team beat George Washington 74-70 on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers now are 4-1. I'm surprised, I gotta say, but it's clear (to me) that this team won't be competitive on the national or regional scene. The depth situation is terminal.

AU bball is spoiler once again. Prowell makes them a good bit better but they're missing quality size and shooting ability.
Jay, Tubs is not anymore near saying he's staying at AU than he was a month ago. This garbage with playing the "they don't want me" card is laughable. Tuberville and Sexton's plan was seriously strangled yesterday with Miles' new, or old direction. Tubs and Saban both had a black Saturday yesterday. Tired of them both.
I'd say both coaches were not happy with Miles' decision to stay at LSU. At the very least, that's one less high-paying job to covet. Sounds like Miles plans to be there a while.
I would say Miles would have been an idiot to make the jump to Michigan but his marriage with LSU will come crashing down sooner than later. He's shown in many ways he's flying by the seat of his pants and so is LSU. There are some very high profile boosters is south LA that thought Saban was a done deal. The president and AD obviously did not want Saban to happen. Don't blame them.
I don't agree that Miles is flying by the seat of his pants. He makes awkward coaching decisions, sure, but there is a LOT of talent at LSU right now. Miles deserves credit for most of that.
I think he's an outstanding coach.
I wouldn't give Saban the pleasure by saying that's his talent. But Miles is not a great coach by any respect. His gambles ended up paying off and making a nice season. There are 4 teams in the SEC that appear to have high, equal talent. LSU has some really good upper classmen. That's the difference betweeen them and UF and maybe UGA. Watch what happens next season.
Ainge pulled a Brandon Cox in that game. LSU is very lucky. UGA would have put it down on LSU last night.
I was thrilled to see Miles is staying at LSU. As long as that idiot is on the other sideline, we have a chance. All that talent, yet they lose to UK, Ark (at home), need a miracle play to beat Auburn, a JPW fumble to beat Bama and two Eric Ainge brain cramps to beat UT. I can't wait to see what happens next year when they lose most of the defense, Pelini , and their QB. Miles looks completely clueless at the end of tight games and his clock management is horrible.
Miles is like a large, lovable retarded child. (Sort of a distant cousin to the large, crazy retarded child that is Ed Orgeron.)
But he's entertaining. The stilted speech, pronouncing Nutt's team "Are-Kansas," and the way he looked in the pre-game mini-presser yesterday...man, he was a pro wrestler looking for a folding chair.
He's fun and stupefying to watch.
Jay, I love your work but have to disagree about your AU basketball statement. I mean, have you seen the rest of the SEC this year. The west is very winnable this year with terrible teams in Bama and Ole Miss. Lsu is average. Only State and the Hogs are in the way. No one is impressive at all in SEC, not even UT.
First of all, I thought the pre-championship presser was Les Miles' proudest moment. The "have a nice day" at the end, along with that flippant wave, was just so awesome. I youtubed it.
As far as Auburn basketball, here's the deal. The Tigers can't rebound. Vot can, but everybody's going to foul him because he hits like 40% at the line. They have seven guys, and two of them are Lucas Hargrove and Matt Heramb.
With Dollard and Prowell, Auburn probably makes the NCAA tournament as a 7 or 8 seed. As it stands, I think they'll fall well short.
The women: Much better.
I think you may end up eating your words in regard to BBall.
I'm OK with that.
If that team mans up, I'll say so.
You do realize they get Prowell back in 2 days against WVU. Also, when Sylla returns, that should help them some more inside.
Prowell was only out for five games. Did the entire B-ball season hinge on Josh Dollard? If so, we're in worse shape than I thought. I mean seriously, Josh Dollard???
First of all, don't discount Josh Dollard's contributions to this team. He's a leader on the court. Not to mention his two years of experience would have been valuable. On Les Miles, I hate the guy. I get so tired of the way he sneers. To me LSU is not even the best team in the SEC. Tennessee gave that game away. Georgia probably would have beat them. Boy the media sure does love them. Losers to a team that wasn't even ranked at the time and now (Arkansas) and they still go to the NC? Apparently according to the guys who commentated the SEC Ch. game, Auburn would have been the reason LSU didn't get to the NC. They blamed LSU's losses on Auburn's illegal block against Dorsey. Did anyone else hear that crap? Congrats on the NC game teams. Notre Dame has a longer winning streak than either one of them.
I saw CBS harping on Auburn's chop block on Dorsey. Get over it already. Jeez.
Jay I can't tell if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me but I'm over it. I just felt like those commentators blaming two of Auburn's freshmen for LSU's loss to Arkansas a full month later was ridiculous. Maybe CBS should get over it, I mean they've talked about that play every game since.
