News of the day, 12/3
Hey everyone. Pretty slow day in general. Let's get to business. As for today's main picture, doesn't Quentin look like Coolio from the "Fantasic Voyage" days? Slide, slide slippity slide.
Like Tim Tebow, we're a dual threat. We're the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net and we're mildly entertaining. Some believe so, anyway. OK. I believe so.
In a story today, the Northwest Arkansas Times reported earlier today that three men have been interviewed by Arkansas: Clemson coach Tommy Bowden, Tulsa assistant Gus Malzahn and Michigan assistant Ron English. No mention of Tommy Tuberville.
I'm now 99% sure Tuberville will be at Auburn next season. I'm convinced that he's not totally content, which could make the 2008 season and beyond an interesting endeavor, but that $6 million buyout presents a major roadblock to schools seeking his services. Cash money says any new deal Tuberville signs with the school will have a re-structured buyout clause. Read: Smaller.
UPDATE: I was to reiterate here something I mentioned in the comments section. Tommy obviously has concerns. If he gets those concerns assuaged to his satisfaction, I think he'll be reasonably content at Auburn in 08 and beyond. That leaves the question: Will he have his concerns assuaged? I don't know. I'm not sure he'll get multi-year contracts for assistants.
I'm a Heisman voter and I gotta tell you, I still haven't voted. I keep hoping a magical candidate will suddenly break away in my mind as the clear winner. I'm leaning toward going with McFadden-Tebow-Todd Reesing of Kansas.
My friend Kari Chisholm of StiffArmTrophy.com has built a really nice site that accurately projects Heisman winners. It looks like Tebow will win.

Pardon me, Jay. But if you really want to rock 'n roll please play the track 'Let It Ride' by Turner Bachman Overdrive. Turn it up real high. Chill bumps. Kind of like when Auburn coaches were gung ho about beating down anybody in their path- Will Muchamp not included.
Great. AU will have a coach making 3 million a year and looking to jump ship as soon as possible. I'm sure recruits will be knocking down the door to come to the Plains. I can't wait to see TT and Jacobs trying to put a happy face on this fiasco. I personally think TT has lost all trust of the Au fans. I would rather have a young, energetic coach(WM)? who actually acts like he wants to be at Au rather than a coach who only seems to care about cashing his check(and can't even seem to act happy about that)!
Jay, your blog entertains me. And that should be all that matters.
AUburn better pay Will Muschamp more to keep him. If they can pay Tuberville with losing almost 40 per cent of his games, AU better keep Muschamp so he doesnt leave for a Head coach job.
Jay, we already know the buyout offer from AU is $6mil next year, $5mil the following, and $4mil the remaining contract.
Its pretty apparent now that Tuberville has never seriously threatened to go anywhere - he just has an agent whose best attribute is stirring the pot and forcing extensions, Sexton has had the entire media going with this and because of it he's going to throw a few benjamins in his pocket.
I think he would have taken it farther with Saban and Tuberville had Lester left, but that put him in a tough spot.

Thanks for saving us the time. Now we know what your storyline will be for at least the next year. You will continue to force feed readers the Tuberville is not happy and leaving to "what ever team of the week is that the gullible will believe".
Since you already have reported what the rumored buyout that was offered is, please explain your definition of smaller. The buyout in the existing contract reduces (gets smaller) every year. The new contract as reported adds 2 years to the existing contract with a buyout that reduces (gets smaller)every year. Get with the program. The buyout was the rumored hang-up that the media pushed last week until it was reported as "fact". I guess we now see why you have problems with your employer wanting verified named sources for articles. Which by the way I,ve been meaning to ask. You knew this was the policy of your employer yet you submitted an article for print that was against policy? Then you blamed your employer for the lack of an article by you in the paper? Interesting.
Let's take these one by one:
1. "Since you already have reported what the rumored buyout that was offered is, please explain your definition of smaller."
Read my blog entry from Dec. 1 below. I haven't reported anything about the buyout.
2. You knew this was the policy of your employer yet you submitted an article for print that was against policy?
I was told our policy would be enforced on a case-by-case basis and I felt very strongly that this was a case where we should use unnamed sources. Explaining what happened is my way of being accountable to HABOTN/Advertiser readers. You're welcome.
3. On Tuberville wanting to jump ship: I don't necessarily think that's the case at all. I don't think the situation is terminal. He's clearly unhappy about some things. If those things are worked out to his satisfaction, I think he'll be pretty content. He's not the kind of guy who will tank his job to prove a point or anything.
4.) "Let It Ride" by BTO is a great song. I'm not sure Quentin would dig it, though he might. Maybe I'll ask.
Forgot to comment on this one:

Even if this was all dreamed up by the media, that Jimmy Sexton doesn't even have a phone with which to talk with school represtentatives, doesn't this still look bad?
Why would Tuberville play this game? Why be evasive and annoy Important People (and many fans) with non-committal rhetoric? He's eradicating goodwill with this. Hear me now; listen to me later.
You think he'd just do that for fun? You think there's no motivating factor behind it all?
Jay, and just as important, why would Tuberville allow the program to take at least a minor black eye in recruiting? So many excuses out there in regards to "the dead period". There's plenty of time to reaffirm commitments but there's nothing you can do about the perception of what just happened. Coaches will use it just as coaches will use a bagful of items against Saban.
By the way, just my opinion, I thought it was not very tasteful to attack the blog host in the way that you have. It's his job to have an opinion. And, where actual sports on the field is concerned, he's a pretty damn good pick 'em.
Dude...Q would love that song. I can just see the natty dreads flying in the night air in front of the Highlands. He would love the wooing chorus at the end of the song.
Does every other coach have a $6 million buyout? If not, what difference does it make to a recruit. Saban doesn't have a buyout and he is still pulling big-time recruits to UAT. I think people are making too much of this. I just don't think a 17 year old kid is making his college choice based on what kind of buyout the coach has. Maybe I'm wrong, but if that is all the other coaches have on Tubs, we should be just fine.
I don't think the buyout has any effect on the recruits. I agree with that.
I believe other schools will use Tuberville's alleged dalliances with Arkansas (and others, depending on your view of things) as a sign that he won't be at Auburn long. That could affect recruiting, though only a small portion of kids really take that into account. It's mostly about exposure and playing time.
Jay, I assume you haven't attended law school:

Your first paragraph completely contradicts your second. Even if the media dreamed all of this up...why would Tuberville play this game?
Easy answer, if the media dreamed it up then Tuberville isn't a part of it. It's out of his control and spun out of control by talking heads like yourself and probably his agent to some extent (my original post).
By the way, I don't blame you for reporting it, its good for ratings. But I think deep down you knew the whole time that Tuberville leaving was not likely (despite your blog thoughts).
You guys sure do love Will Muschamp huh? Muschamp has even said this himself but this is Auburn's system, not his. We can survive if we lose him. We've had good D the past few years. Until his defense can hold his Alma Mater under 35 points I reserve my judgement. Kudos for the great effort against Fla, Ark, and Ala though. I didn't see any of that fire on the sideline for that game. Before any of you second guess my comments, how many teams have we played and averaged giving up 41 points a game in two years? Not even when we played high powered USC in two games did we give up an average like that.
