BREAKING NEWS: Tuberville signs extension that keeps him at Auburn through 2013 with $200,000 raise and amended buyout schedule. See below.
Hey everyone. I'll just add items as they come available today.
We're grateful that you have chosen the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net to spend the next two minutes of your life.
It's finally finished. Tuberville made a verbal agreement today to accept a two-year extension that keeps him at Auburn through the 2013 season. His salary gets bumped to $2.8 million in 2008 and he's guaranteed $200k raises each season. His buyout schedule also changed. Take a peek:
OLD DEAL
2008: $6 million
2009: $5 million
2010: $4 million
2011: $3 million
NEW DEAL
2008: $6 million
2009: $5 million
2010: $4 million
2011: $4 million
2012: $4 million
2013: $4 million
I find that so interesting. All the information I received indicated that he was absolutely DYING to get that buyout lowered. I totally believe that was his intent. Then he agrees to this extension (which he's expected to actually sign on Wednesday morning) that actually raises his buyout. I'm sure this makes sense to someone somewhere, but not this person right here.
Jacobs confirmed on Tuesday (again) that he wasn't contacted by Arkansas at any point. I know there are ways around him. I'm just passing along information.
Jacobs on the intense interest generated by this negotiation: ``It doesn't surprise me. With the way the world is connected now, everybody knows everything that's going on. That just the way it is now. It's obvious that we have a coach who gets a lot of people talking and that's a good thing in my mind. At least we have a guy people would want."

ON A PERSONAL NOTE ...
So I get a great call from my wife today. She received a quarterly bonus from her gig. Wow. Awesome! Three-day bender in Vegas and we're not talking about the Luxor. I'm talkin' Bellagio, nights at the Wynn in Blush, you name it.
Not so fast. Uncle Sam snagged 43.7% of the bonus. What is that? Do we really need to lose that much of a bonus to fund things? I think 30% would be plenty.

Cash money? Buyout? Smaller?
$4,000,000. > $3,000,000.
Keep up the good work.
What's a million dollars these days?
And I said only that an amended deal would have a restructed buyout clause. So I get half credit.
Could it be that he wanted it lower just THIS year or never because thats when he "thought" he would have the most opportunities?
Then, he realized that the BOT are pissed at him and may want him gone in 3-4 years. So in essence, why not just raise it when he thinks his days could be numbered? Make sense? Who knows?
PS Can I have my picture pop up next to my name when I post? It would make me feel better and I think it would give me more credibility. :)
Keep up the good work Jay.

Actually you said:
Cash money says "ANY" new deal Tuberville signs with the school will have a re-structured buyout clause. Read: Smaller.
But who's counting?
What's a million dollars these days?
I don't know but you could take 13.7% of that and have a good time in Vegas.
Seriously though You and the wife have a good time.
I put some AU-UF videos on my blog... I just hope Tuberville can beat Clemson and then West Virginia next year. 13-0 in 2008???? LSU will be weaker at home, Tenn instead of Gators (thank the Lord), and just if we can beat WVIRG. I hope each year. We have to beat Bowdens Clemson... he called some of the worst plays in his tenure at AU as offensive coach.
Jay,
Have a good time in Vegas. I would recommend Cirque de Soleil's Mystere if you haven't yet been.
More seriously, would you go 180 on calling Tuberville "non-committal" to Auburn? I see today as some evidence that he really was negotiating for other things than reducing the buyout. To be brutally honest, my knee jerk reaction is that the media has over-hyped Tuberville's interest in other jobs, thereby jumping to the conclusion that he insists on reducing the buyout. Hindsight being 20/20, would you say that about yourself and/or your colleagues?
Jay,
its possible that all the information you and every other reporter "received" was not based on any facts.
I've seen very little comment by Tuberville during this process and yet he's been made out as a villain for wanting to decrease his buyout.
Turns out his buyout actually goes up. Either Tuberville's a liar or there is a lot of bad information floating around that makes it into print.
Tell me which you think it is?
I'll address a few of these.
As for "the media" calling Tuberville non-committal: He was non-committal. Yes, he eventually agreed to stay. That doesn't change the fact that Tuberville's lack of commitment during the past two weeks angered some people. I know this is true because I talked to some of these people. They were put off.
As for Tuberville being portrayed as a villain: I guess I missed those reports. He's been portrayed here as a guy who was non-committal toward Auburn and was at least considering his alternatives. I'll believe that until the day I die.
Does that make him a villain? That's up to you. I don't think he's a villain. He's a capitalist.
Tubs did not want to put the fire out well before the UGA game when he had a chance. Point blank. Does that sound like somebody that was eager to stay at his current job? There were implications. We'll see how severe they may be.
Anonymous, you are exactly right (r there 2 of you?). I too realized that Jay was saying Tuberville was negotiating for a lower buyout to maybe leave for another team. And then the buyout was actually raised. Was this reporting based on facts? I thought Tubs cleared some things up with the statement he issued. I sense some negativity on this blog about Tubs and AU. Anyway AU Football Stuff I agree. Next year can be a good year. We have most of the hard games at home. And unlike many of our years (and like 2004) we start off we a scrub team (Lou- Monroe - I think - aha Bammers). So that at least allows us to break in a new QB before the big test. It's hard starting a season with the likes of USC, GaTech, WSU, or even KSU and get a good start to the season. On Les Miles, I heard he hasn't even signed the contract extension. I personally thought he was gone regardless of what he said before the game. Making it to the NC just postponed it. Coaches say stuff like that all the time and still leave.
