News of the past few days, 12/17
Hey everyone. No blog yesterday because my wife Courtney, HABOTN director of employee relations, said I needed to take a day away. I acquiesced as any good husband would. Anything that needed to be said yesterday can be said below.
I'll do just that.
Look at Ben Tate (right) promoting No. 6, reserve cornerback Walt McFadden, for the Thorpe Award. I guess that's what Tommy Tuberville means when he says Auburn is a big family.
We're available if West Virginia wants us; We're the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.
It sounds like TB Mario Fannin is at least moonlighting at slot receiver now. If you recall, he spent some time out there early in his college career and rolled out in there in motion a few times against Georgia and Alabama. Since Auburn ditched Jerrel Jernigan, I guess the best thing to do is find your own Jernigan and use him the same way.
Auburn picked up a commitment TODAY (Monday) from WR Marcus Jemison of suburban Birmingham. He was known as a quarterback at McAdory High, but will play defensive back at Auburn. He picked the Tigers over Clemson and Arkansas.
As predicted in this here blog a few days ago, Auburn has received a commitment from junior college quarterback Chris Todd. He was a hot-shot prep quarterback and a good prospect at Texas Tech in 2005 and '06. Todd spent the 2007 season at a Kansas junior college. His numbers in Kansas were terrible. The company line here is that Todd wasn't a good fit for that offense (obviously) and will produce at a much higher level under offensive coordinator Tony Franklin.
Auburn also landed a commitment from former LSU signee Charles Deas, a large defensive tackle. He spent the fall at the same New York prep school that Bo Harris attended a year earlier. Deas is a big man. Not Greg Smith, but bigger than anybody Auburn has right now. Pat Sims is a reasonably close comparison. Deas will have four full seasons of eligibility.
Brandon Cox isn't exactly geeked about what happened to offensive coordinator Al Borges, who was pushed to resign last week. I feel for Cox: Sixth-year senior preparing for his final college game as a new offensive coordinator installs a completely new system that doesn't match Cox's skill set. Tuberville said last week that "this is Brandon Cox's game," but surely Kodi Burns will run some of this new stuff in Atlanta. Right?
Four football players, three on the current roster, walked at graduation today. Center Jason Bosley, offensive tackle King Dunlap, fullback Danny Perry and former long snapper Pete Compton became college graduates on Monday.
Also of note: former baseball player Cory Dueitt earned his degree today after participating in the athletic department's "Operation Follow Through" program. He was a senior in 2004. Not that my opinion on this issue matters, but going back to school is a noble endeavor. Dueitt gets official propers from the entire HABOTN family.
This has nothing to do with baseball, but Alex Rodriguez's proclamation that he ignored agent Scott Boras in his recent negotiations with New York intrigued me. Agents have become too powerful and too much of a spectacle, Boras in particular, and it's cool to see an agent get owned like this. I'll have more respect for Rodriguez if he dumps Boras altogether.
I can't believe a rift like this even gets out. As Tuberville might say, it demonstrates who has leverage in that relationship.

Plenty of Saban connected to WVU job tonight. Looks like he at least had someone contact them. But, all in all, that's pretty boring news. You know he's from there and he's obviously not happy in Bear World.
It is Terry Bowden to WVIRG,trust me. ANd then I have got to come to that WVIR-AU game in 2008 and hope for a win. But it would be funny to see Terry beat Auburn. He lives near me in Orlando.
Jay, in watching the 6A Florida High School Champ game her in Central Florida, they said a top Player at Osceola or Oviedo pledged to Auburn.. what position was he recruited and how is he rated. They ended up losing to the Miami based High School but that was their first loss. So he looks good. ANy word on him?
Jay,
I've gotta be honest...the crowning of Kodi Burns as next year's QB seems very premature. I don't understand why no one can remember that he wasn't particularly impressive. Also, where is Caudle in this mess? He ran a spread offense in high school too.
Any thoughts on this kid from Kansas? Something about a guy who couldn't make in JC or at Texas Tech makes me very suspicious. Just because Franklin wanted him at Troy doesn't mean that he is ready for the SEC.
Those comments on Chris Todd are reasonable. He was awful in junior college. He didn't play as much during the season's second half -- some claim injury, some claim ineffectiveness.
I don't know what to think.
AFS ... I guess they were talking about T'Sharvan Bell from Kissimmee? He's supposed to be a stud cornerback. Terry Price and Muschamp were the main guys involved there.
My days of projecting which 17-year-old kids will be great are over.
Hey Auburn Football Stuff,
Please tell us again how you know/live near Terry Bowden. The HABOTN readers are easily impressed!!
Hey Jay,
Didnt Charles Deas commit to Auburn over two months ago? Not sure if your just bringing us up to speed on recruiting or if something changed, but he's been on the commit list for some time.
Heh, maybe AFS is Terry Bowden!
We know Terry wants it. And he sure likes to share the news that he's the top choice. It would not be funny to see Terry beat Auburn. But it's really not that big a deal. He's not the anti Christ.
Deas did NOT commit over two months ago. He was just cleared. Therefore, he was able to commit.
Deas, as I understand it, was a pipe dream until just recently. His improved academic situation heightened his value to several schools. He apparently values Auburn above them all, though.
No way Terry Bowden gets that job. If you campaign publicly, you lose.
It is funny that when most coaches are linked to job openings, the information comes from a "source" close to the coach. However in Bowden's case he just comes right and professes his interest. Now whether or not he gets the job, which i would say is extremly unlikely to happen, it is refreshing to have someone actually say it. As opposed to say the coach at UAT who steadfastly denies he is taking the job as he is signing the contract to take the job.
It's rare that a successful candidate seeks the spotlight. There's a difference between being honest when asked a question and pimping yourself to the Associated Press.
After watching the game last night what is everyone's impression of Barrett Trotter and Julio Jones?
I was happy for Terry when he came to Auburn and that was the time my business took off (after leaving the Airlines and starting a business) and made some bucks. So I started to give to Auburn Athletics and other Depts like Business, Journalism and local AU charities. Terry lives here in Florida like me and near me and has a radio show which I have been a guest.
Is ASF trying to say he knows Terry Bowden?
Just tell us ASF. Quit beating around the bush.
I was at the AL/MS game last night and thought that MS was just a better all around football team. Their D-line was dominant and it showed badly.
One of Trotters INT's was from his own two. He dropped back into the endzone and the right OT was literally SHOVED into him by the DE, forcing the ball to only travel about 4 yards right into a MS players arms for an easy TD.
One was a jump ball to Julio that was batted around before being picked.
The other INT (yep, 3) was all on Trotter. The kid jumped a screen pass to Julio on about the eight yard line and took it 92 the other way for a TD. Trotter helled onto it for about a second too long, giving the DB a clean read on it.
But he showed signs of big play ability by scrambling and turning a few sure sacks into modest gains. Overall I was pleased with his performance, given the fact that it was 14-0 when he came in and AL had, I believe, 4 or 5 straight three-and-outs.
Sorry, same guy posting from 5:42.
I meant to say that there were 4 or 5 three-and-outs under the other QB who started the game. Wasnt sure if that was clear.
As far as Julio, I dont think he ever really had a chance to show anything. The two balls they threw to him to go and get he was double covered. They tried a few quick passes to him that he couldnt do much with, and the line wasnt really allowing much time for him to get open downfield. Not to mention that the other QB (from Prattville) seems to strictly be an option QB. the few passes he threw were waaaay off the mark.
I wasn't there at the MS/AL All-Star game, but I heard (from a highly credible observer) that Julio Jones basically opted out of playing the fourth quarter because he wasn't getting the ball enough.
Classy.
That's Julio. Sounds like he belongs at Alabama. They tend to deal with that issue up there.
To paraphrase another vertically-challenged entertainer....
Hello Sabear, Little Napolean
See he and Julio down at the crapstone
Recruiting stars.
They mean about as much as Marks' two stars and Karlos Dansby's 1. Catch my drift?
The HABOTN has cooled off over the last few days...
