News of the day, 12/5

Hey everyone. Fun times. Let's get to business.

Thanks, as always, for doing your part to make this the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.

Tommy Tuberville spent approximately 20 minutes today taking questions from reporters about the contract extension, the negotiations, the erroneous report about him taking the Arkansas job and life in general. Tuberville can be a frustrating guy to cover at times because he can be unnecessarily evasive, but he comes correct when it's time. I'll give him that. It was pretty cool of him to hold an open forum like this. A lot of coaches couldn't handle it.

Here are The Things You Need To Know about what he said today:

1.) Tuberville thinks this was all a big misunderstanding. "I'm glad this is behind us. I think there was a lot of misunderstanding in terms of what this was all about. There was never any doubt I was coming back. It was in terms of whether I wanted to add to more years onto my contract, so we sat down. We had discussions. They were a little bit drawn out. You can't do them all in one day. Of course, I had some things to do, and they had some things to do, but, in the long run, we wanted to do what was best for Auburn and for Auburn's football program and athletics department, and we come to a conclusion that some things that could be worked out, and my family and I and our coaches decided to add to years onto the contract."

2.) Tuberville won't actually sign the deal until his lawyer, Montgomery's Jere Beasley, adjusts some of the contract's language. "It took a month to sign it the last time, but we've agreed on it, the terms. Then what you do is you work out wording, words and if-ands and all of those things. That's very easy to do, but you just want to make sure for both sides everything is the way you want it."

3.) Tuberville is satisfied with proposed facility upgrades. Work will begin in January on a complete facelift of the Athletic Complex's bottom floor, which is where the players spend most of their time. Work will continue through the spring and into the summer. Tuberville also said a new dorm catering to athletes will be build near the new coliseum during the next two years. The coaches' offices are getting a facelift, too.

4.) The assistants got something out of this.
Tuberville said administrators were receptive to ideas about instituting an incentive system for assistants. Many assistants are one year away from being vested for an education-related retirement plan. Tuberville said something about assistants getting raises, though that hasn't been discussed in detail yet.

5.) Tuberville doesn't think there are any hard feelings between him and The People Who Matter. "It's a business. You don't want to let anything go by."

6.) Tuberville didn't say much last week because he didn't think it was necessary. "There wasn't anything out there that I could have intelligently addressed because there wasn't anything to it."

7.) Tuberville got a good laugh out of the report last week that he was leaving for the Arkansas job. ``I happened to be in Arkansas that night. We were at a deer camp. We go every year. It's not that I just happened to go this year. I usually go the week of Thanksgiving. They moved the game back. One of my best friends is a farmer in Arkansas. He always picks me up and some of the coaches. We hunt one afternoon, hunt the next morning and come back.

``We were sitting around the fire. We'd just got through eating. It came on the news that I'd accepted the job. We all turned around and looked at each other very slowly and started laughing about it. That's how things start. It really had nothing to do with Arkansas officials. This is just rumors. It's rumors that get started, internet, talk and everybody thought I was probably over there interviewing for the job. It was a little different. My wife even called me and wanted to know what in the world was going on. There was no basis to it on either side. It was strictly bad reporting."

Tuberville said that he expects defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to return next season. He apparently withdrew from consideration for the Southern Miss job and Muschamp's degree from Georgia apparently didn't go over well with the people at Georgia Tech. No problem. He'll get a nice raise and probably snag a top job somewhere in 2008.

I submitted my Heisman Trophy ballot today ... hours before the deadline. I was leaning toward Darren McFadden. Then I talked with Al Borges, who essentially demanded that I vote for Tim Tebow. Borges described him as "an entire offense by himself." My wife intervened, she of the recent bonus that gets me to Vegas, and asserted her belief that McFadden is the best player.

So with that in mind, here are my official choices:

1.) Darren McFadden
2.) Tim Tebow
3.) Todd Reesing, Kansas: 3,259 yards, 32 TDs, 6 ints, BCS bowl for Jayhawks.

Oh now I see, "Tubs can be difficult to cover at times." Sorry about that. AU Football Stuff, Tuberville has only lost 29.5% of his games while at Auburn.

I saw Al today and he was going through Clemson video and stuff like that. He seems like a guy who is planning to stay a while ...

Jay, youre so smooth. Did you learn your greatness in the gump or before here? Inquiring minds want to know. I also still want that picture next to my name when I post. Hope you have to eat your words on this basketball team. We'll see a peak tonight. Keep up the good work on the hottest blog on the net.

I'm not great now, so Gumpgomery can't get the credit.

Speaking of Montgomery, I'm OUTRAGED that we lost the Division II World Series. I lost a lot of respect for the NCAA over the way it handled this situation. They basically snatched the tournament away from us without anywhere else to go. Hello! The tournament has been here since 1985 and the support it gets here is pretty incredible.

The NCAA sucks. Period.

You think Tubs is back tracking a little because no "real" offers ever existed?

This Alan character really wants his pic up there, Jay. I guess that would require him sending a pic to you? I hope it's worth it. By the way, Alan, I'm not sure Quan will help Auburn produce a "peak" effect just yet. He's good though. He's very good until he's required to save the day within a matter of seconds. I base this on the Ole Miss game last year. He gave that one away and it was his to win. No need to TO the ball like he did twice in the end.

OK. The buyout appears as if it goes up. But it's actually on the same sliding scale. No matter how you slice it it's more expensive immediately to Auburn and/or another suitor. Hard to makes sense of it all. The assistants must be happy. Not sure why it's all so top secret with them.

I gotta say this has been one weird ordeal. I'm orange and blue all the way. But this is weird. Just has a stinch to it.

Oh, another thing. Tubs says there was never any doubt? Yea right!!!

I'll address a few of these:

*Alan, I think you can get your pic on there if you add one to your blogger.com account. I set this up through blogger.com as the flunkie I am, so it's not like I have special powers or anything.

*On the buyout ... it was supposed to dip to $3 million in 2011, but now is up to $4 million in '11, '12 and '13. So I interpret that as "up."

*On Tommy backtracking ... I think that's a reasonable conclusion to draw. That's all I'm saying there.

Auburn has the worst SEC basketball team I've ever seen. Lebo has the UNC pedigree and that's about it. No fundamentals. No chemistry. They don't even run an offense. No identity. Whoah...that sounds like the football team's label. A real embarassment tonight on national TV.

Borges. Why is Borges going to stick around for a long time? Makes no sense. Why was Ron Prince flown to Auburn exactly a week ago? I still say I'd be very surprised to see Borges coaching Auburn's offense next year. Look at his record at each and every one of his stops? Great at first. Average the second season. Horrible the next and the next. He's a hired gun and hired guns continually need a new environment. They're short term. I'm a little upset that the guy in Atlanta isn't coming home to momma. He's a coach.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

OK. I'm going to clarify my earlier comment on Borges.

I said he looks like a guy who is planning to stay a while. I did not say he is a guy who will stay a while.

I think there's a chance Borges will be at Auburn next season. I'd put it at 20%. Tops.

It's a tough business.

"Auburn's search for a quarterback isn't over. I'm not convinced a long-term option is on the roster right now."

What are your thoughts on Caudle? How about Field? Brandon Cox was only serviceable this year. One of these guys has to at least be that capable.

Jay let me make some points:

Augno4.... He has lost 4 games this year is what I am talking about and maybe 5 if he loses to Clemson (which I pray he doesnt)..... that is 34 per cent and ONE SEC champ game win in 9 years and 2 appearances in 9 with a kick in the mouth in one of them by Florida. I dont care about beating the Ball States and Tenn Tech. I care about the loses that keep us mediocre.

As much as though I like Borges talents... he is on probation.. He needs to get up from 101th best offence to at least the top 40 !!!

I would pay Will Muschamp more and give him Tubervilles parking spot for the year because if it wasnt for him... we would have lost 7 games.

I have placed Auburn on Giving probation... I am diverting my giving to non Athletic area's like scholarships. I will await my massive Athtletic giving plan until after the West Virginia game. (probably lying here... I always come through for Auburn when they ask and Jay Jacobs is a friend that I cant say no to.... But I have earned the fact that I can act mad at 4 loses) I am giving 30 full scholarships to Florida students who want to go to AUBURN.. ( to enhance my Auburn friends in ENEMY Territory)

As a business owner that rewards good results I always have to think if a person is needing to be fired or rewarded or given a chance. Sometimes when I thought a person could do better I was correct. But sometimes (like in the case of Tuberville) I hated someone who made themselves look better than they were to con others. Or that while he got the praise and worship with mediocre results, a discussion of reward and all this "save Tuberville from leaving" is something that is ABSOLUTLY CRAZY. I had a Priceline ticket waiting in his name actually.

Enough on this, so lets beat Clemson and go 13-0 in 2008. If you look at my blog, I have moved on.

Like I have any say in the matter, I give Tuberville JUST ONE Year. If he loses more than 2 games next year.... looks like my funds go to the homeless.

Neal McCready is a lazy reporter. His column yesterday on the Tuberville landscape was just his typical cage rattling BS. No talent. Tuberville's comments yesterday completely erased the popular opinions shared by the majority of the writers in this state. Sounds like Tubs got a kick out of watching them all scramble, guess, and practically fabricate information. Spin it any way you can. Tubs was in a good mood yesterday. That's a good sign.

You all know I'm tight with McCready, so don't roll in here ripping him for being lazy. He's not lazy. What he writes isn't cage-rattling BS.

Go post on Woodbery's blog with that business.

Also, Alan's "What was that mess," gave me a huge laugh. Thanks for that!

The closest thing to legitimate reporting you can get in regards to AU is Marshall. Woodbery is an Alabama grad that only stays awake when there might be a little controversy. Goldberg thinks he's comical. Thems the facts if I may.

Auburn Football Stuff:

Not sure why the expectations are so high for next season? Where's the QB? Gotta have one of those. At this point, I'm all for Furr or Trotter to get a shot. Playmakers. Young, ineperienced QBs make tons of mistakes. I can't name one right now that took a program to a very high level in the first season as starter.

9:46 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sam Bradford at OU? Tim Tebow at UF? Matt Leinart at USC? All first year starters that took their program to a high level. It can be done if you have enough help around them.

11:32 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tim Tebow was not a starter and he did not take them to another level. Leak provided the dramatic moments of the season. Not sure Matt L is the best example either as he had some good experience off the bench. That's the point. Our guys haven't gotten that experience. They're also not that talented IMHO. The point to Auburn Football Stuff was that quitting Auburn if they lose more than two next season is a bit dramatic. We've had one great season and two good ones in 9 years.

11:50 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can't disagree that our guys are not that talented. If they were, Cox wouldn't have played a down after the USF game. I was just saying that it can be done given the right personnell around the QB. Matt Leinart had never thrown a pass at USC before he kicked our ass in '03 and ended up winning the AP NC. I do agree that AU Football stuff is being a bit dramatic.

12:24 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I stand corrected on Matt. You're right. First pass was a TD and was the difference in the game. What do you think about Borges' coaching in all of this? Do you feel like he's somewhat to blame for the lack of development of the reserves?

2:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't blame Borges yet because I think he has done the best with the hand he was dealt. I just don't think Field was ever going to better than Cox no matter how much coaching he got. I've never seen Caudle play plus he was hurt at the beginning of the year, so I don't know about him. Burns was not ready this year. I think they didn't ever anticipate Cox regressing as much as he did and did just enough to get by with him. I admire the hell out the kid, but he has a Div. III arm and the punishment of being QB in SEC really took a toll on his body. If Borges stays and there is no improvement in offense next year, it will time to move in a different direction.

Cut-and-pasted from another AU list:

Of the top-20 most efficient passers in College Football this year, there were six that had less than 25 pass attempts last year:

2007 Record 2006 Games 2006 Passes
Jr Todd Boeckman Ohio State 11-1 3 3
Jr Todd Reesing Kansas 11-1 3 24
RFr Sam Bradford Oklahoma 10-2 0 0
Sr Taylor Tharpe Boise St 10-2 5 13
Sr Ben Mauk Cincinnati 9-3 1 21
Jr Cullen Harper Clemson 9-3 4 20
RFr Case Keenum Houston 8-4 0 0

2008 Record 2007 Games 2007 Passes
So Kodi Burns Auburn ? 8 22
Sr Blake Field Auburn ? 7 11
So Neil Caudle Auburn ? 1 3

My blog, my rules.

If you want to make unsubstantiated claims against good reporters, you have plenty of message boards on which to do that. Go there instead. I can live without your patronage, believe me.
