News of the day, 2/29

Hey everyone. Happy Leap Year Day.

Did anyone catch last night's episode of LOST? It was a good'un for sure. I thought it totally was an homage to Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughter-House Five," which is like the greatest book ever. In it, the main character becomes "unstuck in time" and basically teleports to different periods of his life -- and other places -- in random ways and times. That's what happened to our Scottish pal Des last night.

At one point, Daniel Faraday told Des that he was "unstuck in time." Yay.

I put up a picture of Mr. Eko today because Jeffrey Lee, AuburnSports.com ace, is working his way through the early stages of the show and remarked how cool Eko is. Jeffrey is half-way through season two. That conversation reminded me how totally cool that character was, how cool "Yemi" was, how cool Eko's interaction with the smoke monster was and how much it sucks that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje elected to leave the show.

If Sen'Derrick Marks had legitimate acting skills, maybe Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof would cast him as Mr. Eko II or whatever. It's just an idea.

OK. Enough geekiness. Let's got to business. I'm pressed for time at the moment, so I'm dropping a few nuggets now. I'll return with a full LINEMAN REPORT (and it's a long one) a little later.

Scrimmage is tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10 a.m. in spacious Jordan-Hare Stadium. You're invited. Enter through Gate 9 (south-end service entrance) and getcha a seat in that endzone.

Chris Todd, the injured quarterback, didn't throw during practice on Friday. He told reporters that he suffered a Grade 3 separation of his AC (shoulder) joint while at Hutchinson (Kan.) C.C. last season. A Grade 3 is the most severe grade and indicates a tear of some kind. There is no consensus among orthopedic experts about the best way to treat those kinds of injuries. Todd said he has undergone at least one scan (could have been an MRI or a CT) that didn't indicate anything unusual. Either way, it seems likely that he'll be on the shelf for a little while.

WR Tim Hawthorne suffered an injury to his left wrist on Friday. He left practice to have it scanned. Coach Tommy Tuberville said he couldn't get a good feel for how serious the situation is.

Former players Tim Duckworth and Ben Grubbs were at practice. Grubbs, an Eclectic native, said he hasn't been affected by the money he's earning as a starting guard for the Baltimore Ravens. Moments after insisting that he's frugal, Ben discussed his new Cadillac Escalade and spacious home in suburban Baltimore. He's a funny dude.

I had fun watching the OL and DL go at it for an extended 1-on-1 session. Basic thoughts: Tyronne Green, Sen'Derrick Marks and Antoine Carter are really good.

Tuberville said the toe injury suffered by TB Tristan Davis on Thursday was diagnosed as a bruise. Still, Davis won't play today.

Here are your pass-rush results from tonight's action.

**EDITOR'S NOTE: I occasionally award an "E" for "even" in situations where I cannot determine a winner. We have argued this point before. I'm not yielding. I think draws are possible because I see them.

SenDerrick Marks (94) vs. Tyronne Green (71) -- 94
Jake Ricks (91) vs. Jason Bosley (68) -- 91
Zach Clayton (98) vs. Chaz Ramsey (76) -- 98, 98 **used right hand to throw Ramsey aside**, 76
AJ Greene (90) vs. Ryan Pugh (50) at RT -- 90 **bull-rush rage**, 50
Mike Goggans (49) vs. Andrew McCain (75) -- 49, 75, 49 **Nall demands new LT**
Goggans (49) vs. Lee Ziemba (73) -- 73 **new LT handles business**
Mike Blanc (93) vs. Byron Isom (57) -- 57, 57 **Blanc just pushing and not getting anywhere**
Ricks (91) vs. Mike Berry (66) at C -- E, 66, 66 **fight breaks out**
Marks (94) vs. Bart Eddins (53) -- 94
Blanc (93) vs. Eddins (53) -- 93, 93 **Blanc pancaked him**
Clayton (98) vs. Kyle Coulahan (58) -- 98 **dominates**, 98 **despite hold**, 98
Luke Farmer (64D) vs. "Action" Jackson Timmerman (64O) -- 64O, 64O
Marks (94) vs. Ramsey (76) -- E, 94

... then Don Dunn asks for a new DL. Nall says: "Everybody ought to want to jump in there."

Clayton (98) vs. Ramsey (76) -- 98
Antonio Coleman (52) vs. Pugh (50) -- 52 **speed**, 50, 52
Antoine Carter aka "Hot" (45) vs. Lee Ziemba (73) -- E, 45
Blanc (93) vs. Green (71) -- 71, 71
Ricks (91) vs. Bosley (68) -- 91
Farmer (64D) vs. Eddins (53) -- 53

Watched second practice video. Our QBs look awful. Horrible passes. Uncomfortable in the pocket as if they were feeling any real pressure. You can't do much in any offense with a decent QB.

``He had better zip when he was in middle school than he does now. It's frustrating for him. We just want to find out what is wrong with him to see if we can get him better. Maybe it's just having all that time off and then all of the sudden throwing a bunch of balls, maybe it just went dead. It's never been good since he got here. It's never been the way it was when he was a junior in high school.

This is Franklin on Todd.

So the statements beg, why the hell did you bring a guy to your program that has been deteriorating since he moved beyond junior high?

Baffles me.

Willie J ... I never know quite what to say to you.

However, I agree completely with your assesment. If he can't do it, and we didn't think he could, then why did we waste a scholarship on him?

Just say, "you had me at hello". I'm your bud. But I'm Fonze to your Richie Cunningham. I got your back. And I don't need quarters to make the box sing.

Phred, it wouldn't surprise me a bit to see either Furr or Trotter not taking the redshirt. I know Trotter's got the moxxy (sp?). He's accurate. And he can sling it with authority within 45 yards.

By the way, what about this Lost stuff? I've never once thought about watching it. I guess I need to give it a whirl.

I've just never had a great feeling about him. If you are the real deal, you don't lose the starting job at Texas Tech? and then run off with your feelings hurt.

That may not be the case at all. Just my opinion. But I just really think he is going to be wearing earphones and holding a clipboard come August.

I'm with you on the Lost thing. I guess we need to get hipped up and current on cool.

With you on your opinion, Phreddy. Why check out of Tech when you're second string as a freshman?

Yea, why leave anywhere when you're second string as a true freshman? That's a great place to be.

LOST is one of the two TV shows (The Office being the second) that I watch and I realllllly like it.

So I write about it sometimes.

That's what I'm sayin'.

Open forum question:

Would you call Neil Caudle a Pro-Style QB?

Tuberville is all smiles these days. Every photo I see he looks like he just won the lottery. Wonder what that's all about?

I'm going to watch Lost for once and see what the deal is.

Phred, that blackjack table smirk Tubs has means something. But I don't know what. I'm never sure about footlose, fanc free Tub. But I've never thought of Tubs as a real coach, but a CEO. He's got some weapons on offense this year but he has no conduit yet.

Caudle has no identity in my opinion. He's really talented, really fragile, and really quiet.

I asked that question as bait.

I've got my money on Kodi. You can LEARN how to the throw the ball. The other talents he has, you can't learn those. He's up first with Deron right behind him.

Happy weekend my friends. Gotta get to bed early so I can play with my boy all weekend.

Really surprised by some of those matchups, Jay. Hotboy is already a force to reckon with. Beating Ziemba? That's tough. Clayton...he's a man.

We have scary talent on the DL

phred..... you bother to notice how nasty graham harrell has been for the past 2 years with 1 left to play at texas tech? maybe not a pro QB, but one great spread QB (and former 4 star recruit, for whatever that's worth)....... also, Todd has a hurt shoulder due to a separation that did not heal right, he has not be detoriating since junior high

I really dig the report on the line drills. Barring injury Tyrone Green should be all-sec next year. I'm glad to hear about antoine carter. I saw that he put on some weight, is he running weakside behind coleman or are they giving him a shot at strongside? And it sounds like they need to teach Blanc some moves.

As far as "LOST" goes it is a great show. I started watching about three weeks ago and have watched three full seasons. I will be caught up and able to discuss it next week Jay. But the picture of EKO has got me intrigued although i didn't read any of the comments.

and there can absolutely be an "even" in that type of drill. Just like in a game if the quarterback takes half a second too long and gets sacked it's not the offensive lineman's fault. I would have had your back on that arguement.

I remember the time Carter beat Ziemba. Carter didn't even engage Ziemba; he just juked inside and blasted past 73 on the outside and around. Carter was so quick with the change of direction, too. I was really surprised.

Mike Blanc has to do more than bull rush. Surely there's more he can do besides trying to play push-a-war with guys who are dying to play push-a-war with him.

Jay, what'cha think about Bart Eddins? He came in as a hot-shot defensive lineman, was moved to offense, now isn't really making a name for himself.

Our DBs and WRs look good. All did extremely well in winter workouts- it's totally obvious.

Need a QB to step up. Need a QB who can lead a WR.
