The first spring scrimmage, 3/1

Hey everyone.

Yes, DE Antonio Coleman went down during the final play of the scrimmage. He was engaged with LT Lee Ziemba and ... something went wrong. He was essentially motionless for 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived to cart him away. Coach Tommy Tuberville said Coleman was conscious and alert and showed some movement. Coleman's movement was impaired to some degree. We're talking about a spinal injury of some kind.

UPDATE @ 3:15 p.m.: Coleman suffered a cervical sprain. He since has been released from East Alabama Medical Center.

OG Byron Isom was standing near Coleman as the injury occurred. Isom said he didn't know exactly what had happened, but was very concerned when Coleman began screaming. Then Coleman got quiet, his breathing became more rushed and Isom said that's when he knew the situation was serious.

I chased down Ziemba as he was leaving the stadium (he wasn't avoiding anyone; he just hadn't been requested for interviews) and he was very emotional. He didn't want to talk and that's fine with me. He obviously had a very direct look at what became a very scary chain of events. I'd be worried out of my mind, too.

I found it odd that an ambulance wasn't on site. One was summoned and arrived pretty quickly -- maybe five minutes after the call was made -- but I'm hoping to get more answers on that situation in the future.

Also, RB Mario Fannin went down with what Tuberville described as knocking down the shoudler. It looked like a separation to me based on how Fannin was holding that arm. He was in a lot of pain.

Also, WR Tim Hawthorne suffered a broken arm during Friday's practice and is out for the rest of spring ball.

Here are Auburn's officially unofficial stats from the scrimmage.

RUSHING
Furr 10-57
Lester 12-44
Anthony Jemison 6-35
Fannin 2-12
Jason King 2-9
Burns 5-9
Caudle 4-(-2)

PASSING
Caudle 22-33, 243 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT
Burns 22-37, 162 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Furr 3-5, 26 yards

RECEIVING
Zachery 9-84, 1 TD
Dunn 8-63, 1 TD
Billings 6-57
Trott 5-33
Charles Olatunji 4-34
Carr 2-59
Lester 2-31
John Douglas 2-21
Brent Slusher 2-7
... and so on.

OK. I took pretty copious notes during the scrimmage and I'm going to try to recreate all 126 plays below.

Issues: Some players weren't immediately identifiable to me. I'm talking about walk-ons and stuff. Also, I'm using numbers only because it would take all day to write out every single name. Anything inside the ** is simply my take on the play.

> indicates a catch
INC is incomplete
Also, something like "R-C" means it was caught on the right side and cut back toward the middle.

Ziemba needs his ass beat down for what he did. Tried to break his neck.

I don't want to say much until I see some video of the situation. I think Coleman and Ziemba were either in a fight or about to get into a fight when the injury occurred.

There's so much going on at once during a football play. I wasn't watching that particular matchup at that particular time.

I just hope it is not as bad as it sounds.

I don't want to be educated about the QB situations at Texas Tech. I don't care and it wasn't my point.

We have had a lot of transfers that have done quite well. Kenny Irons and Rudi Johnson come to mind.

And, I wasn't trashing Chris Todd. I am sure he's a fine young fella. I was, however, stating the facts. He got beat out for the starting job by a fellow freshmnan. He left and went to CC. He did not have a good year. And now we have a scholarship that can't throw the football. These are not personal insults. So, unless you are his mama ... get over it.

What about the other stuff. Which QBs played well, etc

1:28 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'm getting to that.

Burns played best. Caudle started slowly, had two earlyish INTs, but was better as the day wore on. He has some weird mechanical issues.

DeRon Furr mostly ran and he was fearless.

This is just terrible news about A.C. Any updates from EAMC?

What is the deal with Justin ALbert from prattville. Just read where he is going to play with AU. DId we offer him?

As I understand it, Albert is going to arrive in the fall as a walk-on.

That might be the best walk-on in America. Albert may be short. He's a really fast and elusive guy. He is coming back from knee surgery, so results may take a while, but he'll have a chance...

Jay what is the story on Anthony Jemison RB #24 (i think)? He played well and I hear he is the brother of Marcus Jemison S but I cant find any other info on him. Is he a transfer, walk-on, etc. What were his hs stats?

4:40 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I have no idea about Jemison.

He's short, like 5-9, but seemed like a decent little player.

the auburn rivals site called a. jemison a walk on and older brother of recruit marcus jemison

phred........ fair enough, my point was simply, he was beat out by a very good sophomore (not freshman), who went on to have a solid year and was the unquestioned starer, combined with the fact that todd came in injured, does not make todd a bust / waste of scholarship (paraphrase, didn't go back to the quote).

I have a feeling Terrell Zachary is gonna be a stud this fall, is this a possibility?

5:19 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

What makes you think Zachary will be a stud? I don't get it.

Dr Tuberville, what is a "knocked down" shoulder? Goos grief.
I have to also add this:

Hargrove is NOT a pure shooter. Shame on my declaration last week.

I have read up on cervical strains. Very painful but not very dangerous. Same condition as whiplash.

Thats good news. So it sounds like he just got his head knocked around, no pun intended.

Somebody hit it and knocked it down. The doc had to knock it back up and it works now.

Billy from what I saw of Zachary today, he will get alot of touches. He and Dunn probably made the most plays after the catch. Zachary was not just elusive, he ran through tackles.

Weeeeeeeell. Let's see Zachery do this more than once before anyone starts anointing Mr. Dog House the next great wideout.

I think that I really like a QB (Furr) who doesn't mind getting in a fight with an LB. If the kid is the kind of athlete they say he is, and if he is the kind of competitor he seems to be, they need to find a way to get him on the field.

Just my two cents.

He can't throw right now. At all.

JG - anymore word on the public interpretation of the Ziemba/Coleman tie up? I have been on a few other message boards in the last hour or so just checking things out, and people are all over Ziemba. Is that fair?

9:47 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I didn't see enough. Ziemba was so upset afterward that I sensed he somehow felt responsible for what happened, but I think it's unfair to say he was trying to hurt Coleman in any way.

Jay, I have always though a seperate shoulder was worse than a broken collarbone (in Fannin's case). Thoughts?

Also, based on what I saw out of Furr, he's going to be a force to reckon with in the future. This is another area where the recruiting process is fuzzy. I never, in a thousand years, expected Furr to be the player he was yesterday.

I'm not saying Furr dominated at all. What I saw is that he has a great arm but he doesn't know what to do with it yet. He has some mechanical issues like Burns. What I am saying is he's a big, athletic guy with good speed and a great nose for football.

I wasn't sure what Auburn coaches had in mind with Furr. I just never pictured him as a QB. And I didn't really ever see anything that made me think he could do what Burns could do with his feet. But he's bigger and maybe faster than Burns. And he's not always going to run around you.

I think they can make a good college QB out of this kid (6'3" nearly 220lbs to date).

The only deleting I have done during the past 24 hours was a spam message taking people to a bogus website and a double post from "jhag" re: Zachery.
