Beat writer pick 'em
Hey everyone. My homies Bryan and Jeffrey, who run the fine AuburnSports.com site, again have included me in their "Beat Writer Pick 'Em" poll.
Below the grid, each writer is given a few sentences to forecast the Auburn game.
Some of us have fun with it. I started mentioning Tristan Davis every week last year and some of their posters didn't get the joke. Tristan missed the whole season. The posters accused me of having a bromance with Davis.
So I'm continuing that trend in 2008.
Here is today's "analysis": Jay Tate: Auburn 38-10. With Tristan Davis sidelined with his annual foot injury, Chris Slaughter picks up the pace. The Peach County Prophet will frighten the Warhawks with his excess skill. He'll score one touchdown. He could score three, but he's a team player."
The flames will come. I'll advise.

Thank goodness.
We run our "GameDay" section tomorrow. All that stuff (I write a story, a long column and a bunch of match-up analysis) was due on Wednesday, which means I basically get home Fridays off.
If I had to write for tomorrow, you know, I have no idea what I'd write. We need some games!
Jay G. Tate will be a guest on
The Gridiron Breakdown at 10 a.m. CDT tomorrow morning!
You can listen online at www.blogtalkradio.com/gridironbreakdown
You can chat with us live during the show on AOL IM! Our username is Gridiron Talk.
The show runs 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m.
Hope you make plans to joins us as we breakdown the big college football of the week.
Yes, tis true.
Isn't there something we should be doing today? Like arguing about how Auburn is going to look Saturday night?
We need a Friday hook.
We could debate who should be the QB...again.

So...Is Daniel Cobb going to take the first snap?
I prefer Allen Tillman. He's shown a lot of promise.
Seriously, though, I'd put money on Kodi Burns getting the first snap tomorrow.
what, Jeff Klein wasn't considered? this is an outrage! ;)
On a side note, I can't wait to see Tre Smith start as our RB!
Jeff Burger to the rescue!
First O play: Quick slant to Rod Smith from Kodi Burns.
First D play: Tray Blackmon tackle for a 2 yard gain.
Score at halftime: 12-3
i liked the "sacre blur' comment, too. war eagle, all.
Jay I have heard rumblings that Raven Gray has flown the coop bc of the redshirt. It sounds highly unlikely that this would be true but I just thought I'd ask since we are waiting around.
I have not heard that as fact, but I think Gray is unhappy about something.
He's unhappy about the fact that his knee doesn't work and he is going to redshirt.
Someone should tell him though that his knee won't work at FAMU either.
Why would Raven be unhappy other than the obvious ailment and weakness he has in his knee? Why would he want to not redshirt and subject himself to mediocrity at best? No great player wants to play if they can't make an impact. He's had numerous quotes stating his frustration with his knee. It is what it is. Aight?
Now, Jay, you know this so called Prophet won't touch the ball more than three times and you think he could possibly score three times???
Mark May just said Alabama would beat Clemson by more than a touchdown because Nick Saban would have the ultimate defensive "package" and he would "scheme schematically" to do so.
That's the most overrated myth about Saban out there. The defensive genius. The DB specialist. The dude coached at LSU, with Louisiana talent, and lost more than Miles did. Lost to UAB even.
But, when someone says "scheme schematically" and they're not trying to be funny...I'm really not sure what to do to be honest with you.
Phred, I need to pass the mic to you on this one for your take on "scheme schematically".
Vot Barber. Can't wait to have that guy back on the court. I'm about tired of football already. I'm ready to roll out the next iteration of blue collar bottom dwelling SEC basketball...Lebo style.
Oh, OK. Haven't had enough of me yet? Right on.
And another thing...
One Gabriel McKenzie will have a sack and plenty of run stops tomorrow close to the line of scrimmage.
I could see Gabe putting up some numbers tomorrow. He's a large and imposing human being.
Raven -- he's very frustrated. Kinda reminiscent of when Tez Doolitte was a freshman. Thought he should be playing. Isn't playing. Big-time recruit, etc., etc.
The first thing I need to do is figure out who Mark May is.
"scheme schematically" ... that reminds me of the time a friend of mine got frustrated by the fact he was getting his butt kicked in cards and getting ragged on. He jumped up out of his chair and with great authority shouted out, "f you! I'm smart as a rock!"
... silence ...
Sometimes it's just so dumb you can't think of anyway to top it.
Never been a big Doolittle fan. I've learned to be cautious with those Opelika boys.
But I do think that if tomorrow Alabama will run runningly, and pass passingly, play offense offensively in other words, coupled with tackling tacklingly and playing defense defensively as a whole, they stand a great chance of winning winningly.
finally pushed the play button on the video. good stuff. The theme music makes me want to ride in a 1962 chevy truck down a dirt road in Mississippi. Just sayin'.
Clinton Durst, aka, Mr. Cool. Future coach.
Wonder if Durst can pull the hot chicks yet? He's probably at least nearing the cusp at very worst.
I'm thinkin' he's a magnet.
I feel the need to expound on my last one. You know how it works. Especially when it comes to Auburn football player. The fans get so intimate with the players that, of course, they don't know personally. They read these warm and endearing stories (especially in the preseason) and they suddenly claim the kid as their surrogate sons.
Well, young Durst is semi famous now. He's been written of by all the beat writers and he's had his pic plastered across the orange and blue internet. He's gettin' a little lovin'. No doubt.
His nickname is Fred of course...
Honestly, I had never heard of him until Wednesday. He seems to be enjoying his new found fame though, and fairly well suited for it. I just hope he can handle his fame famously.
As long as he can hone his skill skillfully I think he should be fine. But he has to not deal with those nerves nervously and that's a tall order in front of about 90K.
Exactly. There will be a lot of people cheering loud loudly and acting crazy crazily.
Come on!!!...it's gameday. Where are the updates???
I just got up. Yep. You heard me correctly. Just rolled out of bed. I figure ... the game's at 6, ends at 10, I'll be writing until midnight, blogging until 12:30, home by 2 a.m.
I need the sleep.
Now as far as quenching your gameday thirst, lemme see if I can link some stuff for you.
Here's an update. Desmond Howard should not be on TV. He adds nothing but instant credibility issues for a Gameday crew that's already lame with Corso and, yes, Kirk H. Howard was just stupid this morning with his commentary on taunting vs. Celebrating. Also, loves his country vs. Rap analogy.
Hmm?
You play rap songs with lyrics of lust and night club partying vs. rock or country songs of generally clean taste. You wonder why the raps songs are somewhat frowned upon.
You don't represent college athletics on the grand scale with Lil' John. Can't stand Kenny Chesney's stuff. Not a Maroon 5 fan by any stretch. But c'mon.
Whhhhhhaaaat?
Okaaaaaaay.
Whhhhhaaaaat?
You were asleep. Desmond opened his mouth and silly things happened.
He also said this no taunting/mo celebration focus will force good players to forego eligibility in favor of the NFL where they can adourn themselves.
True.
