Practice Eleven (8/12)
Hey everyone. Let's get to business.
Here's what You Need To Know:
(Click for more detail)
This is Pugh and Coleman seconds before the fight began. Notice that Coleman's right hand is up near Pugh's throat. Pugh told Hugh Nall that he started the fight because Coleman kept hitting him in the throat.
Here's Ziemba working against A.J. Greene today.
Here's Ziemba working against Mike Goggans on Monday. Notice Ziemba's posture. Can you guess who won this battle?
Tristan Davis breaks through the line during a sweep run.
Here's what You Need To Know:
- A pretty serious fight broke out today during the pass-rush drill. The initial participants were RT Ryan Pugh and DE Antonio Coleman. They started going at it. Then several other players, most notably LT Lee Ziemba, piled on. The fracas ended with Coleman et al. crashing into a water-cooler. Coach Tommy Tuberville, in a rare show of anger at practice, raced over to the scene and began yelling at players to stop.
Coleman stayed down for a few minutes. He later participated in full-contact drills, so I'm guessing he's fine. I'll be writing about this in Wednesday's editions. - The offensive line didn't have a good day in pass rush. Freshman DE Jomarcus Savage began the drill by bull rushing Ziemba into the quarterback. Pugh, LG Tyronne Green and OT Mike Berry were at least adequate. Hugh Nall was highly dissatisfied.
- C Jason Bosley was back today. He didn't participate in the pass-rush drill, but he was out there for all of the 11-on-11 stuff.
- Practice was supposed to start at 3 p.m. Bosley said he was in treatment at 7:30 a.m. when a trainer casually mentioned that practice had been shifted to the morning. Bosley said that mental adjustment provides a major obstacle for many younger players ... and may help explain some of the sluggish play.
- DE Michael Goggans was forceful during the 11-on-11s. He wasn't affected by the schedule change.

Ok Jay, this is now starting to get old. What is up with all the fights? Is it just me or does this seem odd?
About the fight:
Dadgummit Jay this type of thing gets you ejected from games and all it does is risk injury to players we can't really afford to lose. I know it's an emotional game but this is getting out of hand. Our coaches need to nip it in the bud.
Jay, What do you make of this fight? I know firsthand that fights are very common throughout football practice, but it seems this has been a growing trend. Tuberville's reaction especially shows some concern/anger towards the situation. What sort of firsthand feelings did you get from the situation?
To his credit, Tuberville was yelling like a mad man there for a minute. That may be the first time I've ever seen that from him in practice.
The problem in this case wasn't the fight. The problem was players jumping into the fray once Coleman and Pugh began to tango.
It happened maybe five feet from me. I had to dodge it. I just know that a huge mass of people -- players, trainers and at least one coach -- crashed into the water cooler. A lot of those people were trying to calm the situation. Some weren't.
If it's just one-on-one, it's not a big deal.
So what do you think to lead to others jumping in? Immaturity? Or group bond, you know, O-line v. D-line?
Ziemba seems like he might have a screw loose. In a good way during the season, but maybe dangerous for folks during practice. It's like he doesnt realize when to tone it down. No need for him to get involved like that during practice.
Obviously I can only go on what you report but it sounds like two guys got into it and he (along with others) jumped in. I'm all for protecting your guy in a game, but not at the detriment of another teammate.
Not sure what to say about Ziemba. He was the opposite of a peacemaker today.
I'm surprised Glenn Dorsey hasn't tried to blame Auburn's fall practice scuffles on some injury he has sustained in pre-season NFL. Phew.
I suppose next you'll say that Chaz Ramsey came in with the chop-block (except it was with his golf cart due to his back injury)
Chop blocks cause rising oil prices, the recession, and pollution in Beijing. Thank God we have have Tebow and Phelps.
I wish we had a Chop House restaurant in Montgomery. They have the best onion rings ...
It is time for the fights to cease, because at some point team unity suffers. I know these guys have to go at it 100% in order to be ready for the SEC, but the guys involved don't really have anything to prove to each other.
Piling on is the opposite of leadership. Time for Z to grow up.
I honestly think that if the coaches can keep it under control, everything will be fine once we have someone else to "fight"
I think they are getting after each other only because there is no one else to get after.
It would be a could time to teach a few lessons about "cooler heads" though.
Ziemba is a very aggressive player. He probably needs to rein this in a bit before some of those DLs decide to issue a "market correction" ... or something of that kind.
Yeah, he's asking for a "corporate takeover". You know, I was thinking though. I have played on a lot of teams in my life, and I cannot ever remember liking every single person on the team and vice versa. You know? Somebody was always crossed up about something until about the time the clock said about 10 seconds left and we were winning.
I don't think Ziemba would run home and cry to momma...or try to transfer. However, it is a plus to have a player that can effect the stock market through pure strength.
Jay are these guys just being aggressive are do they genuinely not like each other?
I'm all for ziemba getting in there and defending his boy pugh with some shoves but a multiplayer brawl is ridiculous. And fighting someone with a helmet on while you are not wearing yours is ignorant.
This is from a distant outsider point of view but it seems like the defensive line (marks, coleman and company) like to talk alot. and the offensive line (pugh and ziemba) like to punch people who talk alot in the eye socket alot.
I don't think the players have it out foe each other. I think it's just hot and humid and tempers flair when you're competing lights out in that weather.
Go outside and run 10 wind sprints with 10 seconds rest in between. Afterwards, go immediately inside and let your wife stab you in the forearm with a knife.
See what happens...
That was pretty dang funny Ron.
Anon ... things sound rough around your house.
Maybe they need to hire $abear's consultant so they can nap, I mean sit, in air conditioning and talk about their feelings.
"Now Antonio, have you ever tried negotiating with Lee instead of using force to get your way to visit the quarterback?"
"Mm hmm, and Lee, Antonio is your teammate, so why do you always stand in his way?"
I don't think the OL has it out for the DL or whatever. It's just that Pugh and Ziemba are very aggressive players. They only know one speed. I'm not saying that's right; I'm just saying how it is.
If I was Ziemba, I'd be careful when getting involved with Antonio Coleman. Let's say AC was seriously injured today. There would be serious repercussions stemming from a situation Ziemba said wouldn't happen again.
Ziemba...what else can you say? He's mad. And he wants to fight when he's on the field. Hear he's a pretty good guy off the field and he has a super hot girlfriend. I guess he can pretty well whoop anybody on campus.
But he never got to meet Bruce Lee or Takeo Spikes. Maybe Tray Blackmon is on the agenda.
Remember that Pugh just came back from an eye injury, which was probably suffered from a misplaced hand to the face by a D Lineman. He probably still holds some disdain from that poke... and Coleman's hands to the throat set him off. I'm not sure how the coaches feel about the DL using questionable hand placements, but (in my opinion) we shouldn't be practicing them on our own teammates. Maybe Ziemba agrees.
I forgot about Bruce Lee's college days as a DE at Singapore State...
I was saying earlier that Mike Blanc is due for a blow-up one of these days.
I'd like to see what damage he could create. He is a massive and remarkably strong human being.
Why's it always got to be Singapore??
Seriously, you guys calling fighting in pads and helmets ignorant...
No sh*t!
Mike Blanc's fighting style would definately incorporate his most commonly practiced move the bull rush.
That's his "signature" move.
OK, his only move.
