Tuberville speaks

I'm hawngry. Here's the quick version of coach Tommy Tuberville's remarks this afternoon.
  • Tuberville is changing his tune on TB Brad Lester a little bit. Lester was on the practice field today, but he hasn't yet been cleared for contact: ``He's still real stiff. He's got to have contact before I let him play. You can't he doesn't have the range of motion. I would hope he could play."

  • On talking with Kodi Burns' parents after the USM game: "They understood. This is the kind of offense Kodi can excel in once he gets going."

  • On what is holding Burns back: "We're only three games into the season. We didn't want to get into a situation where we were switching (quarterbacks) in and out. It could change. We've got to score more points. It's good to have two guys who are so close (in terms of skill) -- you always have options."

  • On losing at LSU last season: "Those are hard to get out of your minds - just knowing the significance of it."

  • On if he worries about the fans' perception of the offense: "No, really not. I'm here to win games. We're 3-0."

  • On the MSU game: We didn't handle very well the crowd noice, the cowbells, and we lost our concentration."

  • On LSU's Trindon Holliday: "He gives them a special touch."

  • "Our players understand the LSU game."

  • "Both of us build our team on defense; speed on defense."

Can Saturday please come tomorrow? On top of just wanting to get that 3-2 taste out of my mouth, I always feel like LSU is Ironbowl I. UGA is IB II and bama just completes the trilogy. I really might not get a single thing done this week.

Hey is Auburn-LSU, ESPN College Game Day, SEC, at night, Pat Dye Field at Jordan Hare Stadium adn the Tigers are 2 1/2 point underdogs....Exactly where we want to be....Remember the Florida Game last year, our offense was abismal, record was 1-2 and no one gave us a chance...Tubbs is at his best with his back against the wall
WDE!!!!

The big difference last year vs Florida is that we were a 20 point underdog on the road.

I always have more hope when we are at home. You have to think we will be more disciplined at home and cut down the errors. If so, then we can win this game.

ok, if we're making comparisons, how about '06? we have all this hype, get thrashed by ARKY at home, then rise up against UF with an ESPN Gameday audience to beat the Gators? sure that happens again.

aunmobie, u gonna be there this weekend?

Went for the morning run today (6:30 AM)....felt the fall crispness for the first time. Sets up for a magical Saturday.....gosh i hope we win.

In 06, I don't think we realized how far the offense had fallen from 05 until too late in the year.

It seemed every week it was getting blamed on early kickoffs or sleepwalking through games with lesser opponents. However the signs were there that we weren't a good offense.

Then after the Ark State game where we looked horrible and won 27-0 everyone figured we'd snap out of it when UGA came to town, but the offense never woke up all year, but it was too late in the year before anyone realized how far it had really dropped off. Even in the Florida game we didn't score an offensive TD, but we still won.

At least in 2007 our offensive expectations were lowered based on how we played in 2006.

Unfortunately this year, they got raised due to the new offensive changes and some people apparently expected us to come out and score at ease until the LSU game.

It's hard to make comparisons from year to year. I just assume if we cut out the penalties and the turnovers then we'll be in a battle with LSU down to the wire just like every year since that disasterious trip to Baton Rouge in 2003.

Not trying to bring you down.

I'm just trying to figure out what happened. Our offense has been dormant (and sometimes even a doormat) since the 2nd quarter of the Iron Bowl in 2005. Once we went up on Alabama 21-0 in that game, the offense left and we haven't seen it consistantly since then. Pretty much since the starting with the 2nd half of that game and the bowl game that year vs Wisconsin through the 06 & 07 seasons we've won on defense and very minimal offense, but we have won and that's the key.

However with just a tiny little bit more offense in 06 & 07 we could have been in Atlanta both years.

It's time for that to change for the good.

Unfortunately, I can even pinpoint the spot in the 2005 Alabama game that slowed the offense down.

Prechae Rodriquez fumbled a reverse setting early in the 2nd quarter with us up 21-0 that set up Bama's 1st score.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Many of Auburn's problems are easily correctable. Fumbles, in my mind, are basically random.

Penalties are less random, but can be limited.

It's not like Auburn has no clue out there. At this level, with these mistakes, it's basically the 2007 offense all over again. And this is at Franklin's lowest point.

I think this offense can be league average soon. Can it be better than that? Not until Chris Todd either starts throwing with more power or starts making quicker decisions.

i can't disagree with anything you said. cox was blamed in '06 when he and kenny were both banged up after the LSU game all year long. 11-2 was remarkable considering. 2007?????????. that why CTF is here in '08.

i'm still scratching my head as to why ARK and UGA blew us out in '06. ????????? if our D can contain ARK for a half we're in the SECC.

Your last point, Jay, is why Kodi should play. I'm no expert, but I say give Kodi the play with 1 primary and 1 checkdown and then if nothing's open let him run. Just the threat will start to open up the secondary.

And I think the Borges offense's demise was Brandon's knee injury vs. LSU in 2006. The week before he had torched MSU for 42(?), much of it in the air. It was at that point that he became a statue inthe pocket.

Jay,
I totally agree, cut down on mistakes and more production out of Chris Todd on decision making. it's like he doesn't want to take a chance on a throw of fear he will be pulled and never get a shot at getting back on the field if Kodi(or whomever) ever gets on the field, so he takes the short sure routes, throws it away or tucks and runs for whatever he can get. You can't play afraid to make a throw if you are the QB or defenses will stack the box on runs and just sit on the 10-15 yard patterns and dare them to throw deep. Time for Chris Todd to show up and let it rip!

Jay,

Do you ever feel like the man behind the wall in the wizard of oz, ........many grown men, on here all day breaking down plays from 4 years ago and pass defenses, yet, many of us cant remember the password to our bank account,

So here is are my three questions:

1. What is the over/under that the weather cast this weekend is cloudy with a slight chance of corndog mist?

2. Was Teen Wolf(Michael J. Fox version) really that good of a basketball player or do you think they should have played a box in one on him?

3. Who would win in a battle on the defense line? Sen"Derrick Marks or female broadcaster, Shelly Smith. If she had any kind of upside or 40 time, Mel Kiper would be all over her.

Thoughts?

3:44 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

Shelly Smith.........I know Sen'Derrick has much better hair than her, so I'd go with Marks. Heck, I think MJF in Teen Wolf had better hair.

Teen Wolf was so implausible that I couldn't watch it. My favorite movie is Beetlejuice.

Bryan Matthews, aka B-Matt of Rivals.com fame, says the corndog thing has to do with Tiger Stadium smelling like corndogs. Is that even accurate? I've been there several times and didn't notice.

I'd rather see a brawl between Senator Derrick Marks and Jill Arrington. I miss her. I cannot explain to you how ... talented ... she is while standing mere feet away at the AU-UGA game in 2005.

OK. Enough of that.

Will I'll never complain about Erin Andrews, I do miss Jill Arrington.

I remember listening to a UGA game and Loren Smith was interviewing her dad for some reason during the game and he asked the greatest question ever. "So are you here to watch the bulldogs play or like every other guy, here to watch your daughter?"

Munson immediately took over the broadcast and didn't let Loren finish the interview.

my question is: how does being a werewolf make you a better basketball player?

5:29 PM

Draft analysis on Teenwolf:

Upside: Moves well without the ball, can create his own shot, plays above the rim (at only 5'2").

Needs to work on: being a better team player, eating fewer townspeople.

Chris Todd seems scared. Even in his interviews something about him makes me think he doesn't have confidence in himself. Kodi may not know the offense completely, but he looks like he's ready to go out and whoop some ***. I hope he learns the system sooner than later.

I've never noticed Todd seeming scared.

We've had QB's in the (recent) past who have looked scared out there, I've never seen that look from Todd.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I really don't think Chris Todd is scared. I understand what you're talking about -- the way he chats in interviews -- but he's been that way since Day One.

I can't decide if Chris Todd is scared of getting hit in the pocket or it is a combination of the "happy feet" and indecisiveness. Either way he doesn't look comfortable to me.

Things to watch out for vs. LSU this year:

On offense - Scott is leading rusher. Guess who number 2 is? QB Andrew Hatch. LaFell is a go to WR and is dangerous. Trindon Holiday is obviously crazy fast, any time he's on the field he's a threat. AU needs to give him the Percy Harvin Treatment.

On defense - Well they are pretty much stacked across the board here. They haven't faced much competition yet, but frankly neither have AU's defenders. AU offense will have to play smart and take what LSU gives us.

A lot of AU fans were aghast at the offense in the MSU game. I went back and looked at the LSU games from 2004 and 2006 and thought (10-9 and 7-3 victories) the stats were very interesting. Basically defensive slugfests, not unlike the 3-2 victory.

Chris Todd, yea i hate that river dance he does in the pocket, is he irish? it appears he does the irish jig when in the pocket...lord of the dance...but not lord of the pocket

Jdinmacon,

Yes the last two LSU games in Auburm were a lot like the MSU game last week.

However the main complaint is MSU isn't LSU and we shouldn't struggle that much against them to score.

wareaglerk,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the hit on Borges on the sideline come right before Prechae's fumble? I always point to that play as the beginning of the end for Big Al. It would be interesting to compare AU's offensive numbers before and after that event.

9:59 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You may be correct. Maybe it wasn't Prechae's fumble that killed the offense, maybe it was the hit on Borges that knocked something loose.

More reason to hate Alabama.

I can almost guarantee we went from over 400 yards and 30+ points per game in 04 & 05 to 325-350 yards and 22 or so points per game in 06 & 07.

It all started somewhere in that 05 Alabama game. Maybe Groves, Gunn & McClover's sack attack that day scared both offenses into never coming back.
