Jay G update
As discussed several times before, I won't have time to blog much tonight.
I have an early flight out of PIT and I'm 90 minutes from PIT right now.
Tommy Tuberville will hold his regularly scheduled teleconference Friday at 3 p.m. I hope to be providing substantive updates before and after that event.
Take care and behave.

War Eagle anyway everybody! See you all tomorrow.
War Eagle!!! Have a good flight.
By the way, I want to mention one of the upsides of the game. It does appear we have a quarterback. In the last couple of drives against Arkansas, and throughout the game against West Virginia, Kodi Burns final looks like a quarterback.
I had never been high on him because he tended to run too quickly an not stay in the pocket. He is making much better decisions now on when to run the ball. Yes, I am an optomist, but I did see bright spots.
Well it's 6:55 and I'm at work. I saw something last night that you don't like to see. Toward the end of the game, a lot of people just quit.
Tub is going to have a tough job getting this team back together again...he'll need to come up with his best George Patton speech.
Steve, Kodi looked good on the high % passes when he wasn't getting any pressure on him.
In the 3rd quarter when an OL stepped on his foot, he changed his stance under center and his mechanics fall apart and he wasn't stepping into his throws at all.
In those last couple of drives vs Arkansas & in the WVU game, Kodi lead us to 17 points. Yes he looked better, but the result was the same.
In fact, on the last drive vs Arkansas with no timeouts, he tucked the ball and ran it up the middle and didn't get a first down, which kept the clock running.
We had our best QB play last night since the 1st half vs Southern Miss, but unfortunately for us all year long, one half doesn't equal a game.
RK- I'm affraid his best Patton speach is not going to save the day here. The team is lost right now. They are just not playing with any heart. In reality, I can only see us beating UT Martin even though I still believe we have the talent to win the rest.
I stayed up and watched the replay and am now at work as well.
Kodi Burns throwing motion is like someone throwing a grenade. However, I am glad they stuck with him through thick and thin. Why burn redshirts or put others in there who can't do any better.
Our interior lineman (on both sides, but mostly on offense) get push around late in games.
Are we not well conditioned or is it a coaching/scheming thing?
Jay G.'s morning story in the paper.
WVU 34, AU 17
Tommy Tuberville is no General Patton. That's Pat Dye. This team is lost for good this season. Like I said in the Arkansas game and was flamed afterward, Auburn's defense has gone stale and they've turned into loafers. They're done. Paul R. is no Will Muschamp. We blitzed twice last night and got beat both times. That means we're not good enough up front, un the middle, or in the back.
'How To Go From First To Worst In the SEC In 4 Short Steps'
By: Tommy Tuberville
My Patton comment was more just me goofing on Franklin's comments this week.
After going up 17-3 and getting that onside kick, once we ran that reverse and lost 7 yards it was over. Have we not figured out that we don't have the speed to run a reverse & we don't hold our blocks long enough to set that up?
Mike McNeill got beat last night for two TD's. I've been down on his play all year. He can tackle, but he gets lost sometimes with the ball in the air...Ethridge is pretty bad running sideline to sideline in coverage as well.
I really think early in the year, it wasn't that our defense was that great, it was that the offenses we played were that bad.
That game was lost in the locker room at half time.
Rhoads needs to feel some heat. He has been over-hyped all year. The defense plays has been dissappointing as of late.
Mr. Sensible- Are we shure they went to the locker room at half?? I'm not sure what they do at halftime, but I'm now convinced they must not talk about the game since we have made absolutely no adjustments all year.
I hear ya, EddieMoney. I don't know what we do.
"Well guys, they've caught on to the limited power stuff we run...Dang Tony Franklin...So, we are back to the spread stuff."
Talk shows are already brutal this morning. I'm listening to 740 right now.
The Realist is hardcore, man, but he's real.
Glad I've converted you to the740 stream. That station is very good.
I mean, Longshore's shtick gets old, but McKnight is A-1.
Doug and Josh are good and funny.
Yeah, it satisfy the itch. Tubs is going to get all the blame and he deserves it. It will probably cost him his job. I just hope they have a plan instead of just fire Tuberville and then hire somebody. I don't want to be like Texas A&M.
I'm with you on that. We could very easily be like Texas A&M if this is handled wrong.
I still wonder if they will really pull the trigger on the coaching change though. Above all, AU is a conservative place, you know.
I believe Auburn is conservative on all fronts except Football. They are itching for an economic stimulus package right now on that front.
I saw where you said the election might go the way that the game did last night.
I assume you mean McCain looks good early then, gets buried by Obama.
Is that right?
Nah, I don't talk much politics. I saw that comment too, but it wasn't me. But I will be glad when this election is over.
Me too...not ready for the season to end though.
Bad or not, I still like watching football.
Check this from ESPN's Chris Low
I agree Mr. Sensible. I go to a lot of games, and I am always surprised when fans leave in the 3rd quarter and the game is still in limbo. I just don't get it. I love Auburn Football, and there is only 12-14 games a year. I try to enjoy them the best I can as long as I can.
Yeah. I mean, that's why football is my favorite sports. It's a short season compared to other sports. Makes it special.
At least my Titans look special.
Pretty fair statement by Chris Low if you ask me. I believe the Defense has been exposed and we are in for 3 rough games.
Not to break up the Sensible & Eddie show...
Stat of the game last night. WVU had 10 plays over 20 yards...20 plays over 10 yards.
Exactly RK- Rhoads is over-rated. The offense has done much, but in each of these losses, the Defense has had a double digit lead to work with.
That game was lost when Tubs said, "we've got to open it up" because we didn't have to do any such thing.
The reason you see so much of Tate in the second half instead of the much more effective Fannin is because we're running Franklin.
Does Rhoades like BBQ
Rhoads is a brisket man.
crudup- I alluded to the same thing last night when he said that at halftime. Everytime he says that we go into an offensive shell....of course we've done that just about every game anyways.
I'm not sure what was meant by opening it up, but I don't think Tub and I share the same definition.
This game was a carbon copy of the Vandy game...except WVU has an offense.
I'm tired of after every game hearing the head coach say "that was probably the best team we'll see all year."
RK, good research. Doesn't surprise me at all.
wake up in the mornin' and I raise my weary head....not a pleasant evening - I got to a TV three plays before WVU's go ahead TD
i'm beyond words at this point. i couldn't even get on here last night after the game. i just showered and went to bed. brutal.
Hornet- keep pinching yourself and maybe you will wake up from this nightmare.
remember in 99 - 02 when CTT used to always talk about being "bowl eligible" after win 6 and that being a goal accomplished? If he says that after UT Martin I'll be unpleasant for a few minutes.
A couple of years recently of winning recruiting battles with USM and LaTech over players doesn't make me feel overly excited going forward either.
Hornet,
That will require us getting a win at Ole Miss next weekend. I don't see us doing that unless there are a lot of changes.
Seriously....we're hoping for the SEC's inaugural bid to the PapaJohns.com bowl at Legion Field. that is soooo sad - depressing - demoralizing. at least they'll sell some tickets
that's true rk...that probably isn't a win
rk you talk about needing changes..I don't feel like scheme changes are the answer right now. Tackling, blocking, QB play, leadership, and desire seem much more important.
what changes are you thinking?
So, here is how it's going to go next week: Paul Rhoads will regain some fire, and Josh Bynes will report that, "The onld Paul Rhoads is back." And rhoads will say he is coaching like he did when he was 25. And then, the next day he will be fired. And then we lost to Ole Miss, but at least then we have the built-in excuse that we switched coordinators mid-week.
Mostly mental changes. Getting players heads in the game, convincing them not to give as soon as something goes wrong.
Finding a way to not let crossing routes eat us alive.
Technique, especially on D fell apart last night.
How sad was it that Blackmon didn't play last night? I feel like he was born with the sole purpose of playing that game. Makes me weep a little.
speaking of head in the game....Ziemba's head is GONE. Stan White called it a sophomore slump on the post game last night. laughable - our 4 and 5 stars (Ziemba - Burns - Hawthorne) sure look like busts right now
This quote sums up last night- "We didn't tackle well today, but we made up for it by not blocking." -John McKay
I'm not an Obama supporter but I will steal his line, "Change we can believe in." Its time for a change. At minimum,a shake up in the asst. coaches; maybe the head coach and his crew, maybe the whole staff and while they're at it the AD. I don't know who is out there that is better than CTT, but I am sure that there is someone out there. If for no other reason because a new HC will bring in new assts.
I couldn't bear to listen to any radio on the drive in this AM. I had to run straight for the HABOTN.
For whatever reason, I don't feel nearly as bad this morning as I thought I would. Perhaps it's simply me coming to terms with what I know needs to happen between now and the end of the year.
I don't think we'll see a knee jerk reaction with CTT this weekend, at least I hope we don't. There has to be a plan in place.
Good article by Low.
To Pat Williams, former General Manager of the Orlando Magic:
"We can't win at home, we can't win on the road...the problem I'm finding is where else to play the games."
James,
You don't feel bad this morning, because sadly somewhere inside most of us expected this could happen.
Some of you were talking about how much worse we looked after half time... I really don't think it was that. We didn't stop their O in the first half either, they just had a couple of hair-brained turnovers. They moved at will on us the whole night. In the second half, it seemed like our O never got the ball, so that screwed up their rhythm. They were clearly the better team, we were really lucky to be up by 14.
True RK. I told some folks at work yesterday to expect an implosion, all the while secretly hoping for a break out performance.
Using reverse psychology on myself seldom works it seems.
I knew it I just didn't want to admit it I guess.
James- It's hard to be upset when your watching the same game for the 4th time. You already know the ending.
I'm running out of things to be superstitous with. I'm out of game shirts, hats, socks. I'm trying a Texas shirt on today.
No, the offense got the ball in the 2nd half.
3 and out
long kick return by Davis...3 and out
60 yard drive... missed FG.
We had chances in the 2nd half, but we were suddenly ineffective after a good 1st half.
Our D sucked the whole game except for the two ints.
Hornet, Burns actually showed me some major upside last night. He needs a good QB coach to work on his feet. But he was certainly a different guy last night. Once again, our WRs made some otherwise nice passes fail. Kodi did a pretty good job hanging in the pocket and looking for the open man. But Hawthorne's hands aren't very good. And Kodi's timing isn't there yet to hit Dunn. You have to count to 2 and throw a bullet in front of Dunn and he'll be there. That's one thing Todd "got".
I place no blame on the QB in this one. He played pretty good despite a crumbling OL.
Men, we need a clean house. Plain and simple. The Tuberville era is over. They're lucky to last 10 years and, at the end, losing seasons are the result. It's happened to every one of them. You either survive the cycle or you leave.
eddie...ur texas shirt will match Tub's jacket from last night
Somebody was saying this earlier in the year, but it rings very true. They were saying that a Coach's fan base erodes a little bit each year, even thru the ups and downs, and by the time you get to this point of 10+ years, the fanbase just wants change. I believe that to be fairly true. Texas was close to firing Mack before he won the NC because he couldn't beat OK. I wonder wht OK fans think?
Exactly Hornet. I thought that was the new color's of Auburn after last night.
crudup - maybe it's just my overwhelming sense of dread from the disaster that is 2008 Auburn football....but I just don't believe Kodi can be "the guy" for us. I don't think he's capable of a 200 yards and 3 TD's type of game in the air. Maybe all the other mitigating circumstances are the reason for this....
UT claims their orange is "burnt orange" too
I have always called UT's orange "Clorox Orange".
I agree with Crudup, I think Kodi can be the guy with better coaching. He's already improved with Franklin gone and if you look at Jason Campbell as a comparison, he was mediocre until a new coach helped him become a first round draft pick.
I thouht Tennessee's Orange was called "Hunter's Safety Orange."
Tuberville-
Not one AU logo last night on his person. Very strange. What does that say about his psychology? I don't know. I'm not really a doctor. But if those guys can get coaching jobs at major D1 programs I can perform open heart surgery.
Knowing Tubs...That move was calculated. He knew he would get a reaction.
You could see early on that Campbell could develop into a good QB. I just don't see that with Kodi.
Kodi has the worst feet of any running QB I have ever seen. They never get set to throw and when he's running he's always off balance.
This team probably finishes 5-7 this year. Tub came in winning 5 games, and he'll go out winning 5 games, but left the program in much better shape than he found it...Pat Dye did the same thing.
Good call crudup. The jacket was obviously a bit off in color and that was all that I noticed about it really. It never crossed my mind that there were no AU logos on it.
I think Eddie is probably right, it wasn't an accident.
Personally I had a choice to make this morning with my own attire concerning the AU logo. In spite of the crap I knew I would hear from wearing it today, I have it on.
33 second half yards.....*&%#!!!!
Bingo, rk. Same thoughts this morning. The right guy can come in and win with these guys. He's going to need some players to become receivers. And he'll need some legit impact freshmen like Perkins maybe.
Notice that the teams with the Michael W. Smiths and Noel Devines absolutely shred us? That said, can Alabama and UGA do that?
they can and they will. after 8 games there is no tangible proof it will be any different next weekend, or 5 weekends from now.
That same feeing, the one that let us know this would probably happen, that's the feeling I'm carrying around today. Because of it, I half expect a major announcement at just about any time. This afternoon wouldn't surprise me at all. Three weeks from now wouldn't surprise me either. Nothing would surprise me. Well, I take that back. It would surprise the hell out of me if the whole fiasco is handled in a way that doesn't seem crazy as a football bat.
I expect something drastic, fool hardy, "shocking" and bizarre.
Smith is a good RB at Arkansas...Devine is one of the better RB's in the country.
That being said you're right. Every time we play a good RB, we get ripped.
Charles Scott had 130 +
Michael Smith had 170+
Noel Devine had 200 +
What will Knowshawn do to us?
This stat explains the 33yds in the 2nd half: Ben Tate- 5 carries/5yds; Eric Smith-3 carries/3yds.
Phred,
No matter what we do, it'll look bad and unorganized. I don't think we know any other way.
I will say I agree and it wouldn't surprise me no matter what happens. Nothings shocking at this point.
Did we lineup under center in the second half at all?
I don't think we will announce anything until they have the other Coach on board. As bad as Jetgate was, it is the right way to get a coach.
We weren't under center very much in the 2nd half.
Again, much like the Vandy game. 1st half Al Borges offense, 2nd half Tony Franklin.
to pdwt and others who think that "real fans" don't say negative things ...
What about my unwillingness to accept total and complete failure makes me a "fair weather" fan?
Are you saying that a "real fan" values mediocrity? Does a "real fan" find pleasure in stagnation and complacency? Does a "real fan" just throw his hands up in surrender and say "well, we are Auburn after all"?
Not me chief. Those of you that bring the Auburn Creed into your arguments about not being down on Auburn, maybe you ought to read it again ... I believe in Auburn. And because of that, I am not willing to sit there and watch it be tarnished and tainted by a bunch of egomaniacal fools.
Phred, i couldn't agree on anything more in my life. whatever happnens from this point will be "something drastic, fool hardy, "shocking" and bizarre".
there is no other way.
Phred...you got it wrong. You are supposed to say thank you may I have another.
Exactly Phred, PDWT noted that bama was bad for seven years before making a good coaching hire. I don't want to wait that long.
Tubbs halftime speech: Alright guys we have a two touchdown lead, lets go practice the spread again.
Thats funny Dan.
At the half they had cut it to a 10 point lead thanks to McNeill missing a coverage on a deep ball and a blitz that didn't work.
Our momentum died on the 1st play after the onside kick.
PPHRED -- Preach it brotha -- Amen

Could be you, are you still using OPEC aftershave?
Phred, I agree, I wouldn't just stand by and say nothing while my son ruined his life, I won't do the same for Auburn.
Well I released my real name for everyone....But really...jet fuel!
Yeah, my mistake RK it was actually only seven points.
I used to be a Tubs apologist, but I quit that business after last year. Tubs made his bed now it's time to take a nap. I appreciate what he's done for the program, no one can argue with all the great wins we've had over the past 10 years. He's certainly leaving the program in better shape than he found it and he has run a clean program. We might get a few bad seeds but it's definitely the exception, not the rule
The bottom line is, you can't pull the crap he has pulled since 2004 with his contract negotiations and put this product on the field. He's not an Auburn man and never will be, he's a hired hand. Hired hands get less patience than family members. Auburn will do right by him and pay him the $6M to stop working, that's hardly giving the guy a rough deal. I know he holds resentment for what happened in 2003, but what do you expect with how that season turned out after all the hype before the season.
Time to start a new chapter for the football program, Tubs has taken us as far as he can, and for that I'm thankful.
Well said VRGA.
Here, here VRGA.
Any news from Jay G yet? Is he back in the Gump yet?
Amen Phred and vrga. We should not have to accept the following mediocre results over the last two seasons:
SEC Record: 7-6
vs. BCS teams: 9-8
It is quite obvious the spread does not work and West Virginia needs to go back to a power football game as you cannot beat an SEC team with the spread.
I like Tub, I wish him nothing but the best.
However I think it's time to start thinking about where we will be in 3 or 4 years if we keep him.
Yep, lets not wait til we're fighting with Miss St. for next to last in the west before making a change.
I just read this joke...Funny:
Maybe Auburn will start sponsoring Tampax.
Good for one period, but no 2nd string.
Anybody hear if Cowherd said anything this morning?
Whoever
Cowherd has not said anything yet that I've heard.
phreds post got me phired up!
Dang tootin!
Mediocrity cannot be accepted. the bammers did it for 4 years with Shula. We are not bammers.
Whoever said that our running backs were talented can back off that now.....they may have talent, but when you fumble as much as they do, they should not play. In any event, the season is done, all I can hope for is a proud effort vs UGA and BAMA.
Cant wait for the hype next Summer though!
" dear leader said...
It is quite obvious the spread does not work and West Virginia needs to go back to a power football game as you cannot beat an SEC team with the spread."
Quote of the morning...
OK.
Does Auburn buyout Tubs for $6 mil?
Or do they say to him, "You're hiring a new OC and that OC has free hand to do whatever he wants--hire and fire. If you don't like it, resign"
As far as the defense...they were tackling early in the year. Don't know what is up? Powers shouldn't have played last night. He was a liability but I guess the alternatives were worse.
At least Alabama will be beating a bad Auburn team this year!
$6 million is a lot of dough, but they will do it. There is more economics to this decision than you may believe. They can justify the buyout by bringing in a high touted coach that will drive up merchandise sales, attendance and hopefully more positive attention to the program. They need all of this to help fund the other sports at Auburn. If Tubs stay, all of that above goes down.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Eddie Money, what highly touted coach do you think would want to come here and recruit against Saban, Richt, Meyer, Nutt, and Miles every year?
I'm not jumping on this train yet, but if The Powers That Be go down this road, I hope they take a long look at Mike Gundy at Ok. State.
No, we aren't screwed. We aren't even close to screwed. We are so far from screwed that the light from screwed would take a thousand light years to get here. I would be very happy if by the end of the season we were only screwed, but this is appearing much worse.
I just hope the next coach gets off the 'everyone wear ugly orange' kick. I mean why was Tubs wearing a A&F jacket last night and everyone else has to wear neon orange? I have a CD from the early 90's called Auburn Blue, can we pleae go back to that.
AUBURN BLUE...nice c...cassette tape. i wore that thing out.
What's worse than "screwed" SteveFC?
Dead is worse than screwed.
I think we are almost flat lined.
I never understood why wearing orange upset so many people.
Before 1999 you'd look at our crowd and it would be a mix of navy, orange, white, gray, every possible color.
At least the crowd looked unified after the all auburn/all orange thing started. It looks good on TV to have everyone somewhat uniform, and to recruits the visual specticle of the stadium is a big thing.
Good point, James.
One question: If we give in to the headhunters and ditch CTT, who do we hire?
Who has more SEC wins, Top 10 wins, underdog wins over the likes of #1 Florida (2001), undefeated seasons in the SEC (2004), recruiting studs on both sides of the ball. etc.?
Fulmer? Saban? Spurrier? Meyer? Stoops? Think you can get that quality of coach to come to Auburn with Lowder et al. after Jetgate or after we ditch the second winningest coach we've ever had?
Wake up. Tuberville isn't so bad a coach that we need to ditch him after one sub-par season. Your unrealistic expectations are BASED upon what he himself has done for the program.
Remember that this senior class is what was recruited after the Jetgate season. So he tried something like the spread and failed. Didn't many of you state that Borges needed to go and all hail the spread?
If you're only going to support successful changes and burn people for unsuccessful changes, you'll soon find that ALL changes will be for the worse.
Whether Tubs stays or goes, it is hard to argue that things can stay the way they are and get any better.
Well, I am really not seeing any options here. CTT could fire more coaches, but that won't save us.
What if we simplify the offense? We could just run right, run left, run up the middle, then punt. I can't really see the coaches come out with the we need to simplify the offense again.
Getting rid of Franklin early got rid of one of CTT's options at the end of the season to attempt to save his job. Somehow he has to go to Jacobs and say they we need to get a new OC and Jacobs comes back with, well, we are already paying two of them.
I have no doubt the West Virginia is improved. We won't face another offense like that this season. I do think we have a good chance of beating Ole Miss, but that is an Ole Miss with a first year coach.
We have one game left that should be a sure win. That leaves us at 5-7. Going from favored to win the west to 5-7 is rough. This is almost a Dubosian meltdown.
Sadly, I think CTT was in a no win situation. I get the impression that the other coaches came to CTT with some things that Franklin did in that Tuesday practice that CTT couldn't allow to let pass. I do wonder about how quickly CTT made the decision though.
I am just not seeing many options here. A coaching search to bring in a quick fix isn't likely to work either. The comparison with Michigan is probably very fair.
Rap song from auburn blue:
"auburn tigers, they're never know to fail ya, and let me tell ya, they bringing hell to bama"
Best song ever.
rk,
I guess I like blue becasue that is the dominant color of our uniforms (which are great). I just dont associate orange with Auburn, like I do with UT or Clemson.
Best songs on Auburn Blue are 'Auburn Blue' and '2 bits'
Sullivan, this is a horrendous season, not a bad season. Also, we heard the 2003 excuse last year.
Sullivan,
We should be at the point where we aren't able to qualify for "underdog wins". We should be at a consistant high level where a victory by us over a top ranked team is expected and we aren't underdogs.
We should be at a point where losing to a lesser team should be really shocking. It's not. It's almost expected at least twice a year.
I don't think anyone things that Tub is a bad coach, I really don't. I think people are just tired of never getting to Atlanta, almost always every year losing two or three games we have no business of losing and often showing up in those games in no condition to play or to put up a fight.
That's the stuff people are tired up.
Our expectations may be based on the expectations that he set in 2004, but I don't think it's unrealistic to expect us to not lose to teams like Arkansas, Vandy, Miss State, South Florida and others.
Tub has a good resume, but it's been a steady decline since the one season he can really hang his hat on. Maybe he can stop the decline, maybe I'm wrong. However I don't see it getting any better than mediocre under Tub going forward.
Don't get me wrong, I like Tommy, but we have laid too many eggs like last night in the past decade and seen two trips to Atlanta where LSU has had 4 trips and Arkansas, as school we shouldn't be even with has had 2.
We're always one play away, or one game away, or too young, or playing the toughest team we'll see all year in a certain aspect or something. It's always something.
I do think the decision to get rid of Borges was a bad one. I do think Franklin was right when he said Borges is a good coach.
I have been trying to figure out what options CTT has. The only thing he hasn't tried would be the Doug Barfield orange jersey thing, which worked so wonderfully.
I do think that CTT needs to bring in a coordinator and let him make the decisions on offense, including offensive coaches. During the CTT era, we have seen that we have usually been great on defense and good enough on offense. Somehow that pattern has to change.
Look,
Botton line is I was there in 99 when tubs came in, and he was on a mission as were all the assistants which proved to bear some great seasons. That is not the case anymore and if you are not incredibly motivated, you will get whacked in this conference.
Mr. Sensi,
I'm with you, I'd love to see Gundy, he got made fun of in the media after his tirade, but I loved every second of it.
Franklin was right on one thing. Gundy's stunt with the media earned him the respect of his team. While he got made fun of, he got made fun of for standing up for a player on his team.
and the person who wrote that article was an idiot and in my opinion crossed the line. No one in the press should call out a college player as a mama's boy, that's my opinion anyways.
This year is much worse than 2003. If you look at the 2003 season, I think we were given much more criticism than deserved. The only team we lost to that we shouldn't have was Ole Miss, and even then that was one of the better Ole Miss teams.
I don't buy the criticism of loosing to South Florida either. They had a very good team. They have an outstanding quarterback and are one of the better programs in Florida, probably only second to the Gators.
This year is different. WV made our defense look slow last night. The offense actually looked improved, but still needs work. When your QB is your leading rusher, you have problems. When the other team punts a total of one time all game, you have trouble.
The biggest issue I see here is how can CTT convince the players to buy in to what we are doing. We have seen it week after week. The players say how much better they like what we are doing, but the results are the same.
I don't think getting rid of Tuberville is the answer, but he has a very difficult job in bringing in an OC. It doesn't matter who he brings in, the guy will have to be successful. There is no way CTT can fire another OC and keep his job.
I loved seeing Gundy stand up for his players. Actually, it reminded me of Franklin and how he accepted the blame and said he was old enough to handle it.
ScottAtl, you've hit on something.
It sure seems like the coaches' mission is trying not to lose instead of trying to win.
Steve,
I disagree about 03.
We shouldn't have lost to Ole Miss and Ga Tech in 2003. Tech wasn't a good team. The Ole Miss game we had won, but we forgot to cover a fullback out of the backfield that gave Ole Miss a long play and eventually the lead, then Obomanu dropped that ball that would have won the game.
Also, with the talent we had on that team. Same offense as 2004, same D as 2004 but with Dansby and Thomas added we shouldn't have struggled to score or to stop some teams like we did.
South Florida was a good team last year, but they weren't go into Jordan Hare at night and win good. We made their program last year by not being able to hold onto the football and our DB's having no clue where the ball was once it was in the air.
i step away from my tv for a couple of hours and wva scores 31 unanswered points? wtf? defense must have imploded.
Sullivan,
Stop being a CTT apologist.
My EXPECTATIONS are based on what CPD did for this program - when winning an SEC championship happened on a regular basis for more than a decade.
Our conference record is on a steady decline since 2004. From 8-0 that year to no better than 5-3 this year (and that's with a perfect scenario taking place). More than likely we end up 2-6 in the conference.
You can have all the wins over Top 10 teams in the world. They are meaningless if you do not contend for your conference's championship on a consistent basis. An Auburn, under CTT has not done that.
Getting a "better" coach IMO is getting someone who can get us to Atlanta consistently. No beating a top 10 team one week then losing to an unranked one the next (year after year after year).
South Florida also beat West Virginia a couple of times, onces before they played us. Don't take them lightly.
I view the head coach as a general manager, more than a coach. It is up to him to get the coaches and players to be successful.
The question is, has Tuberville done a good job of that? In terms of players, I have to say yes. Last years class was one of his lower ranked classes, but I think we all see that there was a lot of talent in that class.
In terms of defense, Tuberville has always found great coaches, the exception being Gibbs.
In terms of offense, Tuberville seems to have a much more difficult time finding a coordinator that suits the existing coaches.
I don't necessarily think this means that Tuberville has to fire offensive coaches. At the salary levels we are talking about, it would be much cheaper to have more coaches and shift responsibilities. Not allowing Franklin to bring in some coaches is probably a big mistake.
Stop Bi**ing about 03 Losses:
USC - National Champion
LSU - National Champion
UGA - 13-1 SEC Champs
We were not better than any of those teams
OLE MISS - Eli Manning/Dropped Pass
GT - Tenuta just crushed Nallsminger
Could have won those games
We are in alot worse shape this year and next year does not look any better unlike 04.
Maybe the problem is too many of the BBQ boys in the offense system.
What if we just went with one of them for a couple of years? Let them recruit, coach, and roll with it.
Cadillac ain't walking through that door.
We don't need Cadillac. I do think we have the players to win, even at wide receiver. There is talent there. I do view our offensive problems as purely a coaching issue, and the barbeque boys do have everything to do with that.
This doesn't mean the barbeque boys must be fired. It means that we need a solid coordinator that can bring in coaches with him. I do believe that both Franklin and Borges were good coaches. I also believe Franklin had people skill problems that needed to be addressed.
It's not about being better than USC & LSU in 2003 it's about the combined 54-7 losses to them. We weren't even competitive, and that's where the complaining about 03 comes in.
Another thing to look at is the $6 million buyout. How many offensive coaches could we bring in for years using that $6 million dollars.
Think about it. Instead of blowing $6 million to get rid of Tuberville, plus the cost of a new head coach and assistants, wouldn't it make sense to spend that money differently?
How many offensive coordinators would be willing to come to Auburn for a million dollars a year? That would be 6 years of a solid offensive coordinator. Make it $800,000 and it stretches out even further.
Also, UGA wasn't the SEC champs in 2003 & they were 11-3.
However if you want to add them to the mix, we lost to USC, LSU & UGA by a combined 80-14 score. Then you add that to the losses to the lesser GaTech & Ole Miss teams.
So yes, there was something to complain about in 2003.
Think about it. Is Norm Chow making a million dollars a year at UCLA? With the amount of CTTs buyout, we could legitimately go after most any offensive coordinator in the country.
Also, while CTT makes a lot of money, the salary of top level coaches has changed. A new high profile coach would likely cost more.
I do believe our money could be better spent getting one of the more high profile offensive coordinators in the nation.
rk,
sorry about the factual error...shold have caught that LSU were the SEC champs since they won the NC, i mean there is no way you can witn the NC without winning your conference.........oh my bad, we are in the BCS :)
Stevie,
Inerested to know who you think we are more 'talented' than in the conference.
Yeah, UGA was 12-1 and SEC champs in 2002.
Another year that angers me. If we can stop UGA on 4th and 15 (or if we can just run the clock out instead of running out of bounds), we go to Atlanta with a rematch with Florida who only beat us because Duval had a PAT distanced FG blocked because he kicked it low like he was attempting a 50 yarder.
rk,
2002 UGA, closest I ever came to tears for a football game
We are as talented as just about anybody in the conference. Talent wise, only LSU, UGA, Florida, and Tennessee are likely more talented.
Head coaches bring in players. They are able to close the deal and sell the program. That is one of the most important aspects of the job. Making sure you have coaches that can coach up the talent you bring in. We are lacking in talent right now, especially at the skill position, and we have been for a couple of years now.
I love Tubs and I know what he brought to this program, but what happened last night and this season coupled with the fiasco duck hunting trip is why we are here in this situation. The fact is that this team is going backwards each week and not forwards. I don't want a Texas A&M change for the sake of change deal. We had better have a Coach in place if they go thru with this.
Also, any Big Name Coach coming in is going to want full control of the program and we will be seing a new indoor facility also in the deal. If we don't give that up, then we will get a Mushchamp type hire. I believe we need a Butch Davis type coach. Someone that has something to prove and will be invigorrated to do so.
The 2002 UGA game was rough, in the 4th quarter Auburn was running the ball into my endzone and we were just trying to milk the clock with a 21-17 lead. I remember the last time we had the ball an injured Ronnie Brown ran out of bounds twice and stopped the clock.
Then we give up the 4th and 15 TD throw where all Horace Wills has to do is see the ball and knock it away.
That one hurt, but I knew we got beaten by a good team...the Ole Miss game the next year when Ben dropped the TD, it was the closest I've been to tears because I was just so tired of stuff like that happening and it was to a team that was worse than us.
I don't think we should go after Muschamp or anyone with no previous head coaching experience. We don't need on the job training.
What time is Jay G on the radio today?
I don't know why anyone would go after Muschamp, at least not a top name school. I haven't seen anything from him that would indicate he is head coaching material.
Steve- We will know what the true intentions of TPTB are depending on what we do and who we hire. We hire Muschamp, we are still doing the same ole same ole, and the Coach will always be looking behind his back.
eddie, what duck hunting fiasco? What are you talking about?
The Trip tha Tubs Took to Arkansas and tried to get another job during that same time. He was holding Auburn hostage during that time and our recruiting started taking a big hit at that time.
eddie, where are you getting this? Tuberville goes on a hunting trip to Arkansas every year. Who did he meet with? How did he hold Auburn hostage? That trip was for a couple of days. How does a coach going hunting for a couple of days hurt recruiting? We had a good class. I am not sure where this is coming from. Do you have any sources on who he met with?
Poll/Question
Who wishes Tubbs would have left last year and we got Paul Johnson?
Not me
I'm not an apologist for CTT. You missed my point. Who ELSE are you going to get? Some unknown like Mike Price? Dennis Franchione?
Bama went through how many coaches after they lost Stallings? How long did it take to regain legitimacy after Dubose? You want that at Auburn? I sure don't.
If we have a season like this one once or twice in ten years, I'm OK with that. It's better than the alternative - a potential return to the non-Pat Dye, non-Tuberville days of the likes of Barfield and Bowden.
No thanks. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt and WORE IT OUT.
We're better off with CTT than without him. Better players, better program and on the average, better seasons than before he came here.
War Eagle.
I agree Sullivan, although there are certainly a lot of fair weather impatient fans out there.
Steve- I guess I'm not doing a good job here. I'm trying to say that he was getting linked and even reported that he had accepted the Arkansas job. He does go hunting to Arkansas every year, but he used that time to play a deadly game of poker with AU. He would never come out and say that he wanted to be at Auburn, all he would say is that he is doing whats best for Auburn. We had just beat Alabama, we should have been rejoicing about that fact, but instead, we get that joy removed a little bit. Maybe I am the only one that felt that way. I know he has thrown is name in the hat before. I honestly thought he was gone after the 99 season to LSU, but the Cigar incident is what stopped that.
Sullivan- I agree with what your saying. Change for change is a bad thing. Just see Texas A&M and Nebraska. They have to be poster childs for that.
Last season it sucked in December as all everyone was wanting confirmation that Tub was staying, and he wouldn't give it.
Yes, he does go hunting during the recuriting no contact time in December...however he played a game last year with his contract and that burned a lot of people.
I am also not for 'change for change' However, Auburn has a history of hiring good coaches since Dye. Before you Jump on me Bowden was doinig a good job and has a good football mind before he went crazy.
no matter how you look at it, Tubbs was in the wrong last December. Nobody could even celebrate the Bama win
eddie, it seems you are talking out of conjecture. Tuberville said he was going to be at Auburn as long as we would have him. He said it repeatedly. You are confusing the media with what actually occured.
Thank you Rk...That is what I was trying to say. That did not sit well for me and up to that time I have been a HUGE Tubs fan.
Listening to 740, they brought up a good point. Do we want to go ahead and make the change and start the search now and get the wheels moving or do we wait until the end of the year and have to compete with Clemson and probably Tennessee for a coach.
this isn't going to make anybody feel better but I am gonna do it. THere was improvment in the offense that being said it really isn't hard to get better when you have been as bad as we have been. The D got gashed and could not bring that little guy down. It was dissappointing I never sat down in the first half then it was like that is all i did was sit in the seocnd. I think it is a lack of adjustments and to me just another reason CTT has to fire some assitants. I was proud of Kodi he didn't make alot of mistakes. We're gonna get better Hotties. Stay true this is where the metal meets the meat and we find out what kinda coach CTT is. If he can salvage this then I will be happy if not then ofcourse the wheels are gonna begin to to turn and someone who has done more for AU than I will ever know gets fired and we move on..sigh.. I am sad. Like a coupla of Hotties I couldn't even bring myslef back to the computer after the game from dissappointment and the fact that I was fairly slammed was another reason. WAR EAGLE HOTTIES
Steve,
Tommy didn't make that comment until many days after all the rumors starting coming out...including one in Fayetteville where the local news broke into live TV announcing him as the new Arkansas coach.
Steve- I promise you that there was smoke there. I have seen the master at work. If Tubs has given his past Monday Speach then, fans would have rallied around him. Instead, it just looked like he was playing the field and sticking it to Lowder and his croonies and the fans because we were caught in between.
I didn't see CTT do anything wrong, other than go Duck hunting. Because the media wants to make more out of it that it is isn't a reason to criticize Tuberville.
I had no doubt CTT would be at Auburn because he said he would be there as long as Auburn would have him. It seems like a lot of Auburn fans got caught up in the finebaumish media game.
This comment has been removed by the author.
I have also seen people bash guys like Petrino, Chizik, and Muschamp for leaving Auburn. I don't blame a coach for doing what he thinks is best for his career.
If you want a coach to be loyal to Auburn, should you need to be loyal to the coach. Who would blame Tuberville for leaving when so many fans are willing to let him go over a bad season. If you can't be loyal to your coach, why in the world would you expect him to be loyal to you?
"I had no doubt CTT would be at Auburn because he said he would be there as long as Auburn would have him."
I wanted to believe him when he said that last year, but there was just too much going on at the time to believe it...plus how many times have things been said that just didn't seem to work out that way.
We can agree to disagree, but he was working both sides trying to get the best deal and keeping Auburn stringing along without confirming anything.
Had Ark offered the better deal, then we would have had a new coach already.
I'm not trying to argue a point, because it is all opinion anyways, but I know I am not the only Auburn fan that feels this way about what happened last December. If Tubs was looking for a job last December, would he come out and say it?? If we wasn't, wouldn't he quickly refute this for the sake of recruiting and make defiant statements against that idea????
The days of Coaches loyal to teams have gone by the wayside due to what they get paid. They are like any other human being. They want what's best for them.
Steve, I suppose the report in Arkansas that he would be named head coach came from nowhere, I guess that happens. I guess you miss the I concur statement as well, Tubs was as noncommital as he could be, he just beat bama for the sixth time in a row and was toying with the administration. Maybe that's how contract negotiations go, but I've never seen Mark Richt at UGA try to hold his administration hostage.
"We can agree to disagree, but he was working both sides trying to get the best deal and keeping Auburn stringing along without confirming anything."
What is your basis for saying this? I haven't read anything about him meeting with anyone from Arkansas. You state conjecture as if it were fact.
Steve, how many times do you let your wife flirt with other men before you start considering leaving? If you think Tubs is loyal to Auburn then you haven't been paying attention.
You guess wrong. I heard the I concur. Tuberville didn't do anything wrong there. Because fans buy into the media game doesn't mean that there is anything factual to it. The media report isn't something Tuberville did. Why criticize him for it. He said he would be at Auburn as long as they would have him. He also said he concurred. Why would he have to justify himself while he is on vacation. This is just idiotic.
It's my opinion and the opinion of others that is what was happening...There were no denials that it was going on...Why would a news station break in with that update if there wasn't at least something going on? Why would the usually very media friendly Tub avoid the media for a couple of weeks?
Steve, it's obvious you feel differently on this situation. That's fine, but most people feel/know something was going on.
Does the Majority of Auburn Still Want him???? Fair question to ask.
vrga, what are you talking about?
"Steve, how many times do you let your wife flirt with other men before you start considering leaving? If you think Tubs is loyal to Auburn then you haven't been paying attention."
I believe you aren't paying attention. Provide a link with any evidence of Tuberville flirting with anyone. There is none. You have been played for a fool by the media. They offerred you a crap burger, and you took a big bite.
How hard is it for a coach to say "no, I will be here, I want to be here, I'm not looking anywhere else, I'm staying here."
Instead it was a bunch of open ended answers that wouldn't be able to be held against him if he had left.
I wish Jay was here to chime in on this, since he is in the evil crap burger serving media. I'd like to hear his take on the Tub/hunting/Arkansas situation last year.
I want CTT to stay for several reasons, stability and recruiting being a couple.
The $6 million buyout could be used much more effectively attracting a new OC.
Coaches like Shula made the mistake of not being willing to make changes. It costs them their jobs. CTT has always been willing. Lets see what he comes up with.
I'm a Tubbs fan.
Loyalty would be nice, but i dont expect it because I've worked in, for, with and hired lots of people over the last 20 years. What I do expect is to get better than we've gotten since 2004 for the price of $6,000 a day.
Steve - Forget the Arky hunting trip. You are aware of how Tubbs left Ole Miss right?
Hey you all.
I am back in Montgomery. I'm headed over to Saltarita's to do Josh Moon and Doug Amos' show on MSP.
I should be on around 1:30.
We'll talk after that ...
Welcome back,Jay. I'll be listening.
If I remember correctly, even P Marshall was speculating on CTT and his future at AU during that time. That is a sure sign in my opinion that something was up. In hindsight I believe the least painful way to part for both sides was missed at the end of last season. It could have been broadcast as a mutual decision that both sides agreed to move in a different direction. And for everyone who talks about one bad year for CTT I think the last two years have been pretty bad and next year looks downright ugly with the schedule factored in with the poor play from this season.
Jay, you gonna be able to get away to see Weezer this weekend, or are you going to be on stakeout on campus at Auburn for the next week?
