Good for you, doug. Glad to know you don't run wild with speculation like a certain homer who follows after your show on the air.

Kristina- Some are saying that he has been kicked off the Auburn team. The rumor is that he was not going to class and falling back into the habits that got him suspended previously. I'm sure we will find out soon enough.

Thanks Douga for following up.

That's too bad. Hope it is just a rumor.

Say what you want about Finebaum, but I know on 98 he had a very reliable source on the inside because I knew about it. I could not believe that he was talking to Finebaum, but he did. SO what i'm trying to say is that Finebaum usually is spot on with his assertions.

9:37 PM

Finebaum is usually pretty reliable with the stuff that he actually says.

He gets his regular callers such as Shane and Bobby to throw out all the rumors.

eddie, Did mindbomb speculate about Blackmon's status?

I am pretty sure if Blackmon is gone, we will hear something from Tuberville soon. It will likely only be that he was released from the team for violating team rules, but I doubt this drags out.

Bowden didn't seem all that nice when he visited the art store I worked at in the 90's to sign prints (either Daniel Moore or Alan Zuniga) after the 93 season.

Now Jay Barker was very nice when he came in. There fake Steve i said something nice about bama.

9:54 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- Bowden was aloof. He didn't know or relate to many of his players or anybody with the team for that matter. I really knew things were screwy when I was working the Bowden Academy, and at the time Tommy was at Tulane, and in one room together you had:

Every Bowden brother but Terry, Rich Rodgriquez and Bobby Bowdena. Terry wouldn't even show up to just sit around and talk. I was lucky to be in the same room as those guys, and they would sit there and talk football for hours. It was a great time. My point is that Terry was never around, at least not any longer than he had to be. He was lazy and everyone knew it.

Douga- There was an offensive lineman that Bowden was walking by on the concourse on the way to pick up his kids from the daycare center on campus, and he asked him to come out for the team. The funny thing was that this person was already on the team, on a full scholarship and Bowden had made an in home visit. That is just unbelieveable. I just remember I could remember the name.

I wish I could have seen that water hose incident. I can see Frank doing that.

10:07 PM

FSJ- I can't imagine why :)? Could it be the fact that he tried to take his job?

As for Brother, I will say this, I was in the room with Brother Oliver, at a hotel in Lagrange on the night that Bowden was fired, and he was indeed promised the Auburn job by a phone call from one Mr. Lowder. Brother, I do believe, is a good man.

Kristina- I was thinking the same thing about why do I pay for rivals any longer? I don't really care about recruiting to the point that I follow every high school star that has Auburn on a list and the reliable information is no faster than what you hear here or anywhere else, and even though they cover Auburn like Jay does, they never give their opinion, which is what I find most interesting. This place rocks compared to Rivals or anything else for that matter.

Good Barnhart Read this morning:

Time for Auburn To Make a Decision

Also, I read a "rumor" that said Tubs would be here next year and that he is targeting Missouri's offensive staff for the next OC and staff moves. That would be interesting, but I'm not sure I buy into it.

6:45 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do think Auburn needs to make a decision soon. My guess is that Tuberville will still be around, but you never know. I also suspect Auburn has looked into possible replacements. After Clemson and Tennessee have already given their coaches opportunities to find new jobs, it would be hard to imagine Auburn waiting until after the season to throw their hat in the ring for coaches.

8:20 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have a theory.

I think Tuberville is bent on staying at Auburn until he runs it completely in the ground. Not because he wants to, but he is so prideful that he doesn't want anyone else to succeed on his heels. So, either he will turn it around or he won't leave anything here worth saving for the next coach.

Just a thought.

8:24 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I have an answer for the "why pay for others when you can get stuff here" comments.

They have more people. ITAT has three full-time guys, Jeffrey and Bryan lock down the rivals site and, well, PMarsh is PMarsh. He'll have a second guy soon.

Since I can't ...
a.) Live in Auburn
b.) Have anyone help me

... I'll be in a compromised position at times. I also have a low tolerance for Auburn minutae (ie: BREAKING NEWS: Merrill Johnson scored a 93 on his biology test. YAY!) I also don't follow recruiting very closely because it's fake in a way. I covered it pretty closely in 1999 and 2000 ... and the kids kept changing allegiances. I decided that overviews were more credible than "up to the minute recruiting news." It's basically celeb gossip.

I love celeb gossip. I read TMZ and Perez Hilton. I just don't have the time to get that deep into the quagmire. I'm a one-man show.

I decided to carve out my niche by funneling facts and opinions into one place. The HABOTN is supposed to be a one-stop shop. I also wanted to build a community that wasn't all into flaming, trolling, sniping, being asshats.

I think we've succeeded.

So thanks.

p.s.: I'm ready for t-shirts.

8:28 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

PMarsh and I are united on that fact:

Auburn needs to man up and make a call. People ought to know where they stand. It's not about the head coach; it's about everyone under him.

8:30 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Yeah, where are the T-shirts.

I agree about the flaming thing that goes on at other Auburn sites, and that is the biggest turn off. That is why this place is superrior in my mind when compared to others.

I guess if we are going to do T-shirts we need a graphic designer to come up with something. I know someone that can print them, but I'm sure others also have similar contacts. We should all pull together on the T-Shirts and get them done. I will help in anyway possible.

8:33 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Someone on here has mentioned we would likely here something after the Georgia game. To me, that doesn't make a lot of sense because the Georgia game shouldn't be a deciding factor. If losses to Vandy, Arkansas, and Ole Miss aren't enough to get Tuberville fired, a loss to Georgia shouldn't matter. I say he stays.

The big question is what he will do with the offense. I hope that they don't try to dictate coaching changes to him. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Either you have the faith in him to make the changes that need to be made, or you don't. Leave it in his hands to get the team on the right track. If next season we are setting at 5-5 and having this discussion, I think there is no question he will be gone.

8:39 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

So, what will be the snappy slogan on the t-shirt, "Where the Hotties live"? How about where the Auburn family lives, and fake steve jobs? That has a ring to it.

And the T-shirt should say. "Where Tim refuses to register." That joke would be so inside, it's practically outside!

Jay G.,
Thanks for bringing some rational thought to the HABOTN everytime someone goes off on some tangent worrying about some "hot rumor." You do a wonderful job. I read the HABOTN regularly, but never post comments I feel urged to comment now for some reason. I am in the camp that AU needs to make a decision. I think a decision has already been made, in fact, but it simply is not public knowledge. I agree that if Tubs is retained, the last two games of this season should not have a bearing on that decision. Also, the board/president/AD shouldn't tell Tubs who he should and shouldn't keep on his staff. That should be left up to Tubs and/or the incoming OC. If Tubs is not retained, I can't say that I'll be terribly dissappointed. I have been the official "Tub's apologist" since '03, and frankly I am sick of it. On the same line of thinking as in the former camp, the last two games should have no bearing if the decision is to fire Tubs. In a perfect world I would hope that some amicable agreement can be made, whereby Tubs can leave on good terms, reduce the buyout somewhat to aid AU, and give us the opportunity to bring in some new energy to the program. I guess that's a long enough post for a first timer.

9:19 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Welcome Joshua. I sounds like we agree on most points, except that I don't believe Tuberville should be gone this season. I say that because he has always been willing to make changes if needed. I have my opinions of the offensive coaches, but I do recognize that Tuberville should be a better judge than I. If not, where is my $3 Million paycheck?

I do expect to see improvement from our offense over the next couple of games, as we have been seeing in the last few games, but a lot of that has to do with the players. Yes, it is the job to get the players ready to play, but there is only so much a coach can do to change attitude. Attitude is what this team needs and I do think we are seeing in based on some of the comments of players.

Joshua- Good first post. As you have read here in the past, you echo most thoughts here. I believe the ultimatium has already been dropped about staff changes when Spina said what he said.

9:59 AM
Blogger michael said...

I have no problem with the administration giving him an ultimatum on the staff. They are his boss, it is their right. If they are competent enough to pick a head coach (questionable, but that is the position they are in), why are they not competent enough to demand some changes to the assistants? It is pretty obvious there is a certain position that is not being developed. It seems it is obvious to everyone but Tubs. An ultimatum may be required.

Its not any different to something Tubs would do to an incoming OC. He would say, "If you like your job, you will work with assistant x, y, and z." The OC is subordinate, so it is Tubs right to do that. But what's wrong with Tubs' boss taking away that right? Tubs admits time and again he doesn't know jack about offense. Yet he knows what makes a good offensive coach? I say save him from himself and force some changes.

Blogger Jet said...

Officially on board

10:27 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Michael - Because that's bad governance. It's not the Board's job to manage, it's their job to govern. The point is to hire supervisors who manage. You hire a coach in whom you have enough confidence to fill staff positions. If the Board believes they're in a situation where they have to micromanage, then it's time for them to hire a new head coach. Otherwise, you let the head coach do what you hired him to do.

The real lesson from 2003 for TPTB is "Finish the Job." They're not going to get caught out in no man's land again.

Gogue will step up in plain view and pull the trigger. He'll say it was his call.

That's why I think Spina was somewhat of a charade. Maybe he feels that way. If so, maybe some folks urged him to be public about it to have someone in the circle talking up Tubs.

I've flip-flopped on this a bunch this year, but I just don't think they'll run him now.

Too many unknown variables. Above all things, Auburn is a rather conservative institution and I just don't see them making the change in this climate.

Now, do I think they should run him? Tune in next Tuesday. I plan to have a whole rant about that following the Georgia game.

Mr. S- I don't think you have to pull too hard. I plan on listening. I wonder what will be said if some how the miracle happens, and we win?

Maybe we should start asking for a Mr. S gut feeling percentage.

If someone was to ask me, I would say 55% Gone.

No new thread yet?

Jay, I made the point last night that those rival type sites are for entertainment purposes and your celeb gossip comparison is dead on.

I agree with the Barnhart calumn regarding announcing a decision.

If they are committed to him, fine let's beat bama and move on to rebuilding for next season.

If he is gone, then let the boys rally around him, beat bama and move on to rebuilding for next season. (Altho this scenario did not work out well for Tenn)

Kristina brings up an interesting point.

This team is very fragile mentally right now - has been all season.

If TPTB run the coach early, I think they fear a meltdown of UT proportions.

Maybe that's why they wait...

monica, you are so easily swayed.

I really don't think a decision has been made. It seems like they would act on it now if they did make one. I am guessing there is still some infighting going on. I'll bet his future depends a lot on how we perform the next two games. Maybe not even whether we win or lose, but how we compete. Or, the next two games might have nothing to do with the decision.

Anyway, I am at 76.33333 (repeating, of course) % that he stays.

Monica, I am with you. If Tuberville cannot make the changes needed, we need to find someone who can. I do think he made a mistake not allowing Franklin to bring in his assistants, but I think Tuberville recognizes that too. I would expect Tuberville to choose an OC and let the OC make recommendations on staff changes based upon what the OC wants to do. The point here is that you delegate responsibility to the people who know. Just because someone is in authority doesn't mean they are the ones to best make a decision. Delegating is one of the qualities of a good manager. I have worked for managers that attempted to mirco-manage. It didn't turn out too well.

Gut feeling ... 97 percent gone.

Bye week gives the team the opportunity to have it sink in.

Yes, there will be successor talk, but then game week helps mitigate that a little as it focuses to TT's last hurrah.

Plus, these guys M.O. is to have their guy ID'd.

Yepp Monica, I'm stepping out on that branch, but I think I need to lose some more weight or the branch may break.

11:08 AM
Blogger Monica said...

The thing that keeps swaying me is:

If they KNEW he was staying why wouldn't they say? So, either
1) the decision is made that he's gone and they are waiting on any number of things or
2) the decision isn't made

However, once I have my mind settled on that I remember that logic and reason have no place in this discussion and I start all over again.

None of which matters, but in the absence of fact, fodder is fun.

I think the point that if Tuberville wins the Iron Bowl, Auburn would look pretty stupid for getting rid of him is valid. How do you fire a coach with a 7 game winning streak over your traditionally biggest rival, although frankly I think LSU is our biggest now.

It makes the decision much easier if they let this season play out and give Tuberville next season to turn things around.

Obviously someone has to define what is a turn around, but I do think it means not loosing to teams like Vandy, Arkansas, and Ole Miss. In other words, we shouldn't be losing to teams with less talent than we have.

Jet G. Ate, I am 97% sure that none of us know enough to be 97% sure. My gut tells me he stays, but I do think the odds are closer to 50%. I am 97% certain of that.

11:16 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Steve ... I agree that 97 percent ... yea, 99.9 of us don't know for sure.

Watching these guys for a long time ... I've got a checklist of things said, things unsaid, way things are done.

Too long to go into, but it spits out my guess. And it leads me to the strong belief, that's already decided, he's done, and they've ID'd who they want.

That's all. I'm a reasonable guy, you're a reasonable guy. The only thing 50-50 in my mind about this, as Coach Dye wonderfully said, is hindsight.

Blogger michael said...

My gut said he stays, but then I ate Mexican food, and then my gut said he would turn into diarrhea by the end of the year. Still haven't fully translated that one. In the mean time, my hand has been saying he would stay, but my shoulder is 103% sure is is gone. When I explained to my shoulder this isn't possible, it threatened to separate. Luckily, my knuckles talked it down. Though generally considered part of my hand when it comes to percentage feelings, my knuckles have a soothing influence on the rest of my body that my hand in its entirety is not capable.

steve from columbia, does this post fall under the "why would he think of that" category? Yeah, my whole life is pretty much that.

By the way, I need to spout out some more of my reasoning.

This team is very young, so I expect significant improvement next year.

I don't believe in blaming, but I do believe the cause of our current issues stems back to Jetgate and the effects that it had on recruiting.

This isn't intended to lessen the contributions of Mr. Personality, Tony Franklin.

The team was young last year but we had a senior QB who could run a game.

I throw out Frank Beamer and then it gets hard after that.

Kristina- Agreed with on the QB issue. I always thought this team would be as good as the QB was, but I NEVER thought it could be this bad.

11:33 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Kristina, you may an excellent point about a senior QB. All you have to do is look at the successful teams out there and you see experienced starting quarterbacks. Ohio State might be an exception, but winning teams have an experienced QB and a solid defense.

Last year we weren't horrible. We were one play away from the SECCG. I do think that many are learning how much they should have appreciated Brandon Cox last season. If we hadn't had him last year that offense would have been,...well..., it would basically have been the offense we have now.

Mr. S- Bobby Bowden? I don't ever recall his job in jeopardy. It would have to been in 1984 or now. He needs to go and should have been gone before.

Steve- Joe Pa? Is he really coaching this years team? Maybe, I don't know.

11:39 AM

Yup

11:40 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

eddie, apparently JoePa is coaching. He actually injured himself showing a player how to kick a ball I believe.

Another example is a guy named Tommy Tuberville who was nearly fired the year before he had an undefeated season.

I suppose guys like Billy Martin and Bobby Knight don't count, since they were other sports, but I do believe Billy Martin was very familiar with the firing process.

11:44 AM

Steve- I know, I couldn't help but question it, as you know you are my arch nemisis on here :).

Tommy did, but is it going to take him almost getting fired every other year to produce?

Did Joe Pa break his hip when he tried the onside kick? That man is crazy.

11:45 AM

eddie, that is a very good point. Maybe we shouldn't underestimate the power of the banhammer. Possibly that is what Tuberville needs.

11:46 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

eddie, if I heard correctly, that is exactly what JoePa was doing. The guy is like 140 years old and just keeps going.

11:47 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

The power of the banhammer could influence me.

11:47 AM
Blogger KJtiger said...

eddie Im with you. It always seems we are young, have injuries, lose preseason games, fill in excuse here. My concern isthis: Does tubs have it inthe tank to turn this around. Does he have it left to get out on the recruiting trail and sell auburn to all that lsiten, does he have it to revamp his staff to increase offensive output, does he have it to build this program up? Like it or not 10 years is a lifetime for a D 1 coach. Not many are sucessfull past that time consistantly. That is the major question I have as to wether he should stay or go.

11:47 AM
Blogger Quitstina said...

We may be tailagting or we may not. That early kick is making it hard to decide.

Joe Pa has had it rough the last few years, from getting his leg broke on the sidelines to the hip thing. Football Coaching is hazardous to his health.

11:48 AM

I'm with ya kjtiger. I really wish we could get a measure of Tubs desire. If he is tired this year, just imagine what the next few will be going head to head with Saban.

I don't think going head to head with Nick Saban is such a big deal. We dealt with him at LSU and we will deal with him at Bama. Keep in mind, Saban has a history of changing jobs, so he could already be halfway through his tenure at Bama.

11:58 AM
Blogger shesaid said...

If Auburn is losing by 3 touchdowns or more at the half this Saturday, Lowder will announce Tuberville's firing over the PA.

I just can't think about it anymore because it makes my mind-brain hurt. I've come to the conclusion that I'm good either way with the decision. It's surprisingly freeing to feel this way.

I probably have said it already, but I'm gonna be this guy Saturday at the game. GOOD TIMES!

12:05 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- I disagree big time here. While Saban was at LSU, he was in his own state and we very rarely went head to head for players except in the Mobile area, where he cleaned our clock. We never had a shot at Jamarcus Russell. Now that he is in the same state, we are going to be going head to head with him for players and he cleaned our clock last year.

12:06 PM
Blogger KJtiger said...

Saban, in my opinion is not the problem. With scholy limits I think it levels the field. What I see is AU has to keep pace with the big state schools. We cannot have a good class every three years. We have to work harder to recruit than the state schools not less as we have been. Saban's history is very evident in his stats. He may be hear long term or he may leave this year if he wins a NC (God forbid) But I do know this he is creating an expectation monster over there that may get him in the end (see Gene Stallings)

12:07 PM
Blogger coosa said...

Eddie - There were lots of bammers calling for Bear Bryant to retire back in 69 and 70. Not sure that anybody official ever considered forcing it, but it was sure talked about. I wish that he would have.

All this speculation on Tubs' future. Here's a radical suggestion - why don't we just take what our president said at face value. He said that Tubs would be evaluated at the END of the season. The season ain't over. If AU beats GA and then Tubs leaves Tuscaloosa holding up 7 fingers, then no way in the world does he get fired. How foolish would the pres look if AU won every game after he made that statement and then he fired him anyway?

On the other hand, if we lose to GA 49-0, and a similar score to bammer, then Tubs might need to start making plans for how to spend $6 million.

Which face, Coosa?

I kid, of course. But this is far too important to leave this to a quick decision after the Alabama game.

Remember, this is a mulitmillion dollar enterprise (football program) that affects the multimillion dollar enterprise holding company (AU).

I am not sure where JCCW's mind was at. I didn't take Jay's comment to mean that Fannin was necessarily the better back because he scored two touchdowns against Georgia. I took it to mean that Fannin was having the big day so on that day he would be the better choice.

Not only that, but Fannin would be the guy I would favor running a fade route near the end. I could be wrong, but it sems pretty obvious to me.

Jay, I would be concerned after looking at the number of comments that JCCW got on his blog, you should....oh, wait a minute, there was only one comment and it didn't mention you. Never mind.
