The fact that Auburn fans are even debating Tuberville's future is indicative of the mediocrity Auburn fans are willing to accept. Do you think Texas, Miami, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Nebraska, USC, LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State would ever consider retaining a coach that had Tuberville's record over the span of 10 years, particularly in light of the achievement of the team in seaon 10? That's the difference between a winning attitude and an inferiority complex. Bear was right when he said "I ain't never been nothin but a winner". I hate Bama but I wish Auburn had a little more of their attitude when it comes to winning.

I like that very much.

Anonymous- Tommy Tuberville's career winning percentage is 65%, that's the same as Nick Saban. Tuberville's also 4-2 against Nickie head to head. All these Big 10 and Pac 10 coaches have skewed records because they play in a weak conference and have about 8 guaranteed wins a year.

It's not settling for mediocrity, it's just hard to fire a coach who has that king of winning % and holds a six game win steak against his in-state rival, plus a 4-2 record against their coach.

Name a head coach that Auburn can go out and grab that can compare to some of those numbers. It's real nice to sit back and talk about how we should go after Butch Davis, Jon Gruden, some of these big names, but it's not very likely to happen.

That means we would have paid a coach with that kind of record $6.5 mil to go play in Destin so we could get a coach with a worse record or no record at all.

Blogger michael said...

So Tim, you are recommending we follow the example Miami, Alabama, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, and Michigan have set with this enviable superiority complex? Because I see that attitude has not helped a number of the programs you have listed.

Fire the guy if you think he is not a good coach and someone else will do better. I have no problem with that. Don't fire him because we haven't won a national championship and he hasn't made us a top 5 program. Those expectations are ridiculous.

Kenny Gabriel is a re-sign from the 2008 class. He needed only one year of JUCO ball.

He's a thin 6-8 guy. Good jumper. I think he'll be a garbage-type guy like Brandon Robinson ... lots of tips, slams, easy baskets by outrunning opponents down the floor.

His one-on-one offensive game is underdeveloped. Not sure about his defensive abilities.

i got to hear him speak last year up here with David Housel at an alumni meeting and talked to him afterward. he was an extremely engaging fella. i barely knew him but i hurt for the guys he mentored. for a college kid to lose someone that important to them cannot be overlooked. as much as it sounds bad i hope they can see past it to focus on the game. it's not going to be easy.

Anyone read Tony Barnhart's column where he mentions that some UGA fans are "discussing" firing Richt? SEC fans are neurotic.

Did anyone read Scarbinski's article from October 28 wherein he discussed a conversation with Jimmy Sexton that many top coaches don't want to go to the SEC b/c of the competition? The SEC competition and neurotic fans eat coaches.

Anonymous....Bear wouldn't be nearly as successful in today's SEC. In today's information age he wouldn't be able to get away with the unscrupulous stuff that did. Bear was a good cheater and if you think that his "winner" statement is justified, then don't post anymore b/c your opinion isn't warranted.

7:12 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Hoopie- I read that. Pretty amazing that Georgia fans would even think that. Richt's one achille's heal is that he struggles to beat Florida. I don't believe that many are actually calling for his firing, or least not many that I know. I do know a lot of Georgia fans that are unhappy with Martinez. Kinda crazy if you ask me.

I know people will compare Tubs to Richt, but I don't see the comparison.

7:16 PM
Blogger michael said...

(editor's note: I just finished typing this, and it is really long (that's what she said), so I suggest you don't read it, because I probably don't make sense anyway, but I don't have the heart to delete)

I don't believe there is any such inferiority complex, and frankly I am getting a little bit pissed off that some people insinuate an inferiority complex is required to think Tubs should come back. I certainly don't feel like we have been an inferior program this decade. Do any of you? Sure, this season we have been inferior. But this whole "inferiority complex" crap would be more fitting for a team that has actually been inferior and chooses to remain so because they don't think they can do better.

A fun phrase to use is "strive to be the very best" or some junk like that. That's fun motivational speak, but do you fire a guy for not being the very best? Does that mean every team striving for excellence should fire their coach if he doesn't win the national championship? I am exaggerating here, but hopefully you get my point.

I don't think it is an inferiority complex to realize where we are in the football universe. We are not a top ten program historically, but the last few years our success has been like that. Will Auburn ever sell out the A-day game because of a coaching hire? Probably not. Auburn is a family, and that's what I like about it. Joe Schmo Alabama who doesn't know the rules on intentional grounding is a bama fan. Auburn fans are real. What comes with that is a smaller program, but with the right people in place we have shown we can do great things. Even so, all things being equal, we are not a bigger program than Miami, FSU, Michigan, Florida, USC, Tennessee, Ohio St, Penn St, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, or even LSU. How many of these schools got where they are because of the right coach hire? I would argue none got there because of a coach alone. Sure, the right coach helped turned some of these programs into powers fairly recently, but that was by going after untapped resources. Florida is loaded, Texas is loaded, Cali is loaded, and the other schools I mentioned are by far the main power in their state or region. This is not an inferiority complex I have, this is just the world we live in.

So anyway, I think the last few years have been pretty good. I think if Tubs had been the coach at USC the last few years, he would have won a National Championship there. I don't think he is as good of a coach as Carrol, but you just have to be competent for some of these jobs.

This is my longest post ever. So, like I said earlier, I have no problem with Tubs getting fired. This year has been disastrous. But fire him because you don't think he is a good enough coach. Don't give me this crap about me settling for only 2 west championships and 1 SEC championship and all that. If Vaughn makes a couple of field goals, all of a sudden Tubs is a better coach? We have been in contention most every year. I think he has done a pretty good job. OK, enough.

I have AU friends just as neurotic.

No comparison on the fans wanting Richt out and what's going on with fans wanting Tub out.

Richt gets UGA to the SEC title game pretty much every other year, at worst every third year. That gives you a shot at a lot more beyond the SEC title game.

So if people at UGA want him out, that's far worse than Auburn wanting Tub out.

Hoopie- I live in Villa Rica, not to far from you. It is definitely funny to watch how some people react to bad situations when it comes to football and their teams. The problem the SEC has is just like Barnhart points out, Everybody believes they are the best and they should win them all. I would be totally against that mentality except for the money that these Coaches make. The problem is that the fans treat their coach like Gods and pay them like royalty. Can you demand more out of your coach because of that? I don't know the answer to that. Give me your thoughts.

I am still upset about how Tubs handled the end of the season last year and that is why

Michael..I just ignore the "inferiority/accept mediocrity" talk. My opinion is that "expecting perfection" is a form of neurosis. I don't whether it realyy is in a medical sense..it is to me in a practical sense.

I grew up a Bammer in the 60's-70's and was guilty of playing the "inferiority card" on AU folks back then. It worked on some folks, but the true AU folks just said "now is Bama's time and it won't last forever". I became an AU fan during the Barfield years while attending AU and during the 9 year streak. One thing that attracted me to AU fandom was that there WASN'T an inferiority streak. There also wasn't the arrogance of neurotic "expectations". I fear that may not be the case anymore.

I have a question.

Are you and Auburn Football fan or an Auburn University fan?

I love Auburn University and everything that goes with it.

I am proud of our rising academic standards. I am proud of our engineering department. I am proud of the friggin' Equestrian Team.

And I am proud of the program CTT runs. That makes him different from Fulmer IMO. He has had very little disciplinary problems and he helps these kids graduate and ready for the real world whether that be the NFL or riding a desk.
So I have no problem with them keeping him another year because of what he has done with the program (and despite what Tim says, he has a pretty good winning percentage.)

I also have no problem with them firing him. Like Michael said, fire him because you think he's done all he can here.

How does this translate into me having an inferiority complex?

Eddie..The SEC facilities/coaches/arms race has upped the price tag. Any top SEC team will have to pay a high price to get any good coach to come into this circus. Every school pays a high price.....every coach can't win 10 every year. If we were in the ACC..maybe expecting 10 wins
every year from a $3mil coach would be more reasonable.

There is parity in the SEC. SEC football competition resembles the NFL more than the PAC 10. SEC game intensty is unmatched. Home field advantage and off-weeks play into the wins as much as coaching and the players. Go look at the SEC teams win/loss records compared to the games prior to and immediately after last season's off weeks. Today's ESPN-bred young sports "expert" doesn't like to hear that b/c no one can be held "accountable" and therefore don't make for good "takes".

Regarding TT's future at AU. I think if you looked at his whole body of work, inclusive of how he runs his program, not just wins and losses, he clearly deserves to come back and fix the problems he created. It's just not that simple, however. Look at our recruits this year. Look a lot like the guys Terry Bowden brought in at the end. A bunch of 5'8" guys, 165 lbs. As of now, we are getting the guys Bama doesn't want, nor anyone else. Look at the most highly rated guys this year. All are now listed as soft verbals, meaning, the ones Bama and Georgia want are gonna bolt. Tommy has been content to pick only from kids that come to his camps. Trouble is that a large number of the really top notch guys he is missing out on. I think they have gotten lazy. Then there is the fact that Auburn is so divided right now. No big hitters support Tubby, especially since he shops his name out everytime he has a relatively good season. And Tubby never has gotten over Jetgate. Then there is the high coordinator turnover. No continuity with this program and it shows on the field. We are a team (coaches, admins, fans) divided and that's not going to change until someone new steps in. Sorry to say, time for a change.

Tim- I think you have a good assesment of the situation. The Auburn Nation is divided, and it will remain divided on Tubs, no matter if he stays or goes. Unfortunately, the only way I see it getting unity is for change. Not that I agree with it, but I do feel that some would be pissed about it at first, but I think all would buy into the new coach and his staff.

8:06 PM

One warning to the people who want to get rid of Tubs partly because he shops his name around: if we go out and get a big name coach to leave his current program for more money, he too will shop his name around every season. This is the college football world we live in.

Kristina. Yea, I've got to get a name. Just started this blogging thing today. Tom, Anon for now.

8:12 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Michael- Its not that he shopped his name around, I can live with that. It was the fact that he used that to stick a gun to Auburn's head and heed to his demands. That is what bothered me. I feel like the contract he got in 2004 was fair due to the fact that what happened to him in 2003. Most fans supported Tubs in 2003 and wanted him to be the coach. It was the outrage that Auburn fans created over jetgate that I believe saved his job and got those involved with it fired. But I believe what he did last year was one uping the people that did him wrong in 2003 and the fans that originally stood by him. I agree that high paid coaches will shop their names around, but to use it to get a raise when you are 8-4 at the time is just ridiculous and shame on Auburn for giving in. Tommy Bowden did the same thing with the same team and he got what he deserved in that respect. Maybe I do hold the grudge longer than I should, but that is the one thing that just really upsets me with Tubs.

8:13 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

My biggest point about Tubby is that no matter what he does due to past history, AU admin and himself, the question is "are they going to fire him this year", or "is this the year he is finally sick of AU and he leaves". Not a recipe for success. Tom Anon

8:14 PM

I started following football and caring about who won when I was about 7 years old. Now think about this: there are 12 and 13 year old bama fans who have never seen bama beat Auburn in a game they watched. Can you believe that? Kids in middle school don't know what it is like to beat Auburn.

Now, there parents surely have the superiority complex, so the kid must be pretty confused. It'd be like learning at school every day that the sky is blue, but then you get home your parents scream at you that the sky is pink and punish you fore saying otherwise. An entire generation of bama fans is gonna need some serious counseling later on in life.

8:20 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Michael- I will agree with you that in the business world, but I will also say this, how often do you take a counter offer to your boss, get the raise and things be great for both from there on out? What happens is that when things get rough, your loyalty is questioned and you are the first to go due to the fact that you were willing to leave in the first place. It is NEVER a good idea to get a job offer and try and get your former employer to match it or up it. Business ethics books consider that a big no no.

I think it all depends on how you handle it and what your actual value to your company/school is. It is true that you can build goodwill by staying with the same company and never asking for a raise, but hey, can't knock the guy for going for more money. And for some reason, I don't think this season would be any easier to take if Tubs has never looked elsewhere. He would be on the same hotseat.

I know different industries are different, but in engineering, a change of companies is the most common raise to get a big raise. It's not like it was 20 years ago. Companies come and go, and the companies are no longer loyal to engineers like they used to be. They will let you go in a heartbeat if things change. There is not much long term job security. (does this sound familiar? schools can be pretty fickle with coaches...) I don't like it, but that's the way it is. A company won't give you a big raise for performing well, because that cuts into their bottom line, so they just bet you won't have the guts to leave and if you do, then see ya later . Or if they catch wind or you inform them of your situation, they may choose to try to match or exceed the other salary depending on your value. No figurative gun is at their head. They pay you what you think you are worth. Just like in Tubs situation.

8:28 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Tim- I think the buyout resulted as a pissing match between both TPTB and Tubs. Tubs wins in this scenerio.

I think buyouts are bad for both. It takes away incentive to be good. It keeps somone from sayiong, F-it, paym me my lottery ticket and I will be on my way.

It would be hard to feel bad for anyone that walks away with $6Mllion.

But lets get one thing straight, the reason Alabama got Nick Saban was not just the money, but full control of the program and not having to answer to anyone. Is Auburn willing to give up full control to the next coach? I absolutely don't think so, and that is the dilema in the Tubs situation.

I know this sounds crazy but you can't come out and say CTT gets one more year to straighten this out. How will recruits and OC candidates re-act to that. This is the crazy part, if you are going to keep him you just about have to give him an extension. Just for recruits knowing(thinking) their coach will be around for a while. Not a bigger by out just an extension.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Agreed Mr S and FSJ. Bama beats Florida, I will be sold also. Right now, I don't see it. I think that Bama is a very good team that has had a very favorable schedule to this point when you look at it. The win at Georgia was impressive, but everything else just looks so so, especially in competition terms.

if someone signs and extended contract, I think a buyout is pretty fair. Remember, Tubs also has to pay a buyout if he leaves for another school. That's just not making a whole lot of news right now for obvious reasons.

michael do agree if we keep him we have to give him an extension.

Salaries are ridiculous and there is an argument to be made that with ridiculous salaries come ridiculous expectations.

8:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think Tubs heart is in it anymore. If you have ever had the same job for 10 years, I doubt you are as fired up in year 10 as you are in year 5. Tubs has to compete against several coaches that are new at their school and out to prove something. Tom anon.

and I just want to make clear, since we are in the presence of a bammer (fsj), that there are a lot of bama fans that are just like the AU fans here. Sensible, realistic, and passionate. But, it is my opinion that, with bama being the default team to root for in this civilized state of alabama, it seems there are quite a few more moronic bama fans that I run into in every day life and on the internet.

anyway, I know this is kind of off subject, but I really want to avoid "bama fans this" and "auburn fans that" stuff. The absence of this is what I like about this blog.

eddie, this new anonymous is Tom not Tim. Tim has left I guess.

8:35 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Michael- I'm in a simillar line of business, I'm a controller for a construction company, and I will say this about the raise thing. There is a big difference in asking for a raise and finding another job in order to get a raise. It is perfectly acceptable to ask for a raise and you know going into it, that you will have to justify it. Raises can be justified two ways in this situation, performance or better offer.

I've heard this before and it is wise saying, "A company will pay you just enough to keep you." Don't expect anymore than that and cost of living adjustments.

I have had to jump jobs three times to get what I wanted, but I would never dare go to my current employer so that they would have the upper hand if something were to happen.

8:36 PM
Blogger michael said...

it's not tom darnit. Tim is just having a bit of an identity crisis.

If you are going to go through that, why not change more than 1 letter, Tim? be creative.

8:38 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

I'm not sure I would say his heart isn't in it anymore. I think the hiring of Tony Franklin was a sign he thought the team needed a fresh spark. It just didn't work out that way.

Also on the Tubs situation, keep in mind we don't know all that went on. I don't know that he actually went to anyone and said, "Pay me or I walk." Seemed like his angle was to let rumors fester and then the salary took care of itself. I may be wrong about this, though.

The Saturday show is live live live.

You can call in whenever you like. We go to callers as long as we don't have a guest on the line at that time.

We don't do canned interviews unless necessary on the Saturday show.

This was the only way the station would run the program and it was worth it to get it out there.

To continue my thought about 6 mil buyout. We gave TT this after it was obvious he wasn't going to Arky or Texas A&M. Poor business decision. Limits our options. Don't blame TT, blame AU. What, Mr. S?

9:05 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I'm not basing my opinion on stats, i'm basing it on pride. I just think that it being Fulmer's last game, things will go his way.

Last week was a total disaster due to all the circumstances with Fulmer "retiring". THat causes a lot of distractions.

It was a good thing that the Bowden thing happened on a friday instead of middle of the week. We barely won against LA Tech and I remeber what a distraction it was for everyone on the team.

9:08 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Didn't they just extend Sly Croom's contract last year too. AU guys must negotiate everyone's contracts in the SEC. Firt TT, then Fulmer, and Croom.. That may add up to about 13 million. A lot to pay for mediocrity.

Well, let me make some predictions.

Tommy Tuberville will be Auburn's head football coach, unless he gets fired.

Auburn will beat Georiga, unless Georgia scores more points than we do.

Alabama will win the Mythical National Championship, unless they loose a game.

Phillip Fulmer will not be the head coach at Tennesse next season, unless ummm, well, there is a nuclear war targeting all head coaches in major college football and he is the sole survivor.

Glad I could clear all of that up.

9:26 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

From earlier, Mr. S- Tubs has at least beat either Georgia or Alabama every year he has been here.

Let's just hope it works out the same way this year. I think that is why FSJ up our chances against THUGA.

9:30 PM

The best way to discribe my feelings about this offense is to say that there is not a single player on our offense that I think we would be in serious trouble if they couldn't play.

This season almost reminds me of the time leading up to the Tre Smith Iron Bowl. We pretty much had the entire backfield injured. I thought our level of screwedness was at an all time high. We need someone like Tre to come out and have a career game our two the remainer of the season.
