Tuberville speakin' on coordinators

Tuberville was on the SEC teleconference today discussing matters related to his search for a new offensive coordinator. The Mea Culpa Project (aka Tony Franklin's reign) ended on Oct. 8 and Tuberville presumabl has been hot on the trail of his next coordinator since then.

Here's what he had to say:
  • On how many people have inquired: "I've got a stack a mile high. I've kinda worked those down to probably a dozen and I'll sit down and start working from those midweek next week. I want to get a start on that."

  • On his timeframe: "I'm not going to be in a real big hurry. I think the first week in January would probably be the target date to have somebody on board. It could happen before that but I don't foresee it happening any earlier than that. I don't want to mess with anybody's season."

  • On Auburn's ideal offensive paradigm: "I'm looking for somebody that knows something about the spread but also knows how to run the football. You've got to be able to do that in this league. I think it's pretty much been proven. If you look at everybody in this league, the people that are pretty much going to be at the top of the league every year are going to have a good running game. Whether it comes from your quarterback in the spread or whether it comes from a two-back system, you still have to have a plan."

you'd think that he would realize that CTF did not have a plan for running the ball before the sixth game of the season.

Well, at least I'd think that. Heck, I do think that. Better yet, I am getting pissed off all over again thinking that.

Now, I'm done thinking. Geez, what a crappy year.

6:09 PM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

This translates into CTT knows who he wants, and he needs to make sure the one he wants will come and if not, then he move on to choice number 2. Once the person in sequence says yes, then the announcement will be made and for all anyone knows, that was the one and only choice. I don't think we will see people come in and interview with the CTT. If there are interviews, it will off site and very hush hush. Need to know kind of stuff, you get the picture Jay G. There may be names leaked that are not even who they really want. It will be intrigue in its highest artform

Mark, Franklin's teams at Troy ran the ball a good bit.

I do think there is a change in Tuberville's stance on the spread. There is a big difference in saying we are committed to the spread and saying we want someone who knows something about it.

I am beginning to think that we will never be a spread offense.

Need help understanding why a lot of people think Tubs has suddenly figured out how to coach a team in 2008? All these wonderful ideas on how to use Fannin and Tristan Davis yet we all know it's not going to pan out that way.

Here's the motto of 2008. If it makes sense don't do it. You can think about it. But don't do it.

It's really that simple.

And to think Tuberville has some master plan to lure a top notch OC after all of his recent tomfoolery (love that word) is almost Bammer like. He may get lucky and hire a good one.

That's all I got to say about thayat.

Half of 'em probably can't find the State of Alabama on a map of the U.S. They are so dumb that they proudly wear flip-flops and overalls out on the town to Walmart on a Saturday night because they can't tie their own shoes or zip up their pants. However, they proudly fly those BAMA flags from the window of their new 2008 Red Chevrolet or Dodge pick-up trucks with their BAMA bumper stickers on the rear bumper. The truck probably cost 3 times their annual income, but is worth 5 times more than the 1970's model house trailer that they proudly park it in front of next to a brand new satellite dish so they can watch their "beloved" CRIMSON TIDE play.

I just read that the last time Auburn had a streak like this, Bryant ended it in his 2nd year at Bama. We all know what followed.

Life is a cycle.

As for the offensive coordinator, we should definitely start building up a list of people that it will not be.

Coming in number one on the list of people that won't be our next offensive coordinator is Bobby "The Plane Boss, The Plane" Petrino.

Coming in at a close second is Tony "I'm an idiot" Franklin.

In the third position, we have one of Auburn's all time favorite coaches, Mike "F'n" Shula.

Coming in fourth is the man that knows it all, Terry "I can't keep it in my pants" Bowden.

Coming in fifth is another Auburn favorite, Al "My Wife Works Here" Borges.

Well, that is my list. Anyone got any other non-candidates?

That was one of the strangest games in the series, IMO.

Alabama was pitiful. Had no shot.

However, Shaun Alexander had strapped the team on his back and was killing Auburn at about 6-7 yards a pop in the 4th Quarter.

All they had to do was run the ball. Heck he might have picked up the first down. If not, PUNT THE DANG BALL....Auburn would have used their last time out too.

The punter had knocked one out inside Auburn's five on the previous punt. But NOOOOOOOOO..

I remember thinking WTH is going on when I saw Freddie in the shotgun. Surely he's going to hand the ball off....Ughhh

I knew at that moment that Dubose was woefully unprepared for the job. The question is whether Bowden would have been fired with a loss?

Blogger scott,will not,from tucson said...

the thing i remember most about the end of that iron bowl was scissum returning au's pooch kickoff. scissum was (almost) not to be denied. i swear i don't think he was fully concious for the final 10 yards of his run. still hate bama.

10:50 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I remember that too...The thing about it is that it wasn't his fault...

- The call should not have been made.
- Freddie's throw was high, which caused him to have to turn awkwardly to get the ball to begin with. He had no chance. The Auburn guy was there as soon as he began to secure the ball.
-I'm still P.O'd about it...

Dubose said he had no idea what the call was after the game. We should have fired him right then and there.

I am convinced this will be a very short Iron Bowl. Both teams have reasons to want to shorten the game. Auburn will want to keep it close, so they will want to limit the number of times Bama has the ball. Bama will want to shorten the game so they don't get too beat up before the SECCG. This situation favors Auburn.

I do think CTT is right that it isn't fair to have Bama play the Iron Bowl a week before the SECCG. While Florida is having to play Florida State, somehow I don't think they will get as beat up in that one as Bama will in the Iron Bowl. Regardless, the SECCG should be played with an off week prior to it. Who wants the champ determined by who gets beat up the least in their last game?

11:08 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

FSJ, that Iron Bowl is one where I was definitely glad I wasn't a Bama fan. My head would have likely exploded. It is one of the reasons I refer to Mike Dubose as the greatest Alabama coach of all time. Mike Shula took a close second.

11:10 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- This Iron Bowl could be really interesting. They are calling for a 70% chance of rain and T-storms for the game with a high of 58. If that is the case, you can bet that I am glad I am not there sitting thru that.

Lets take it to Alabama, stuff their run and make them throw the ball. If we can do that, we will have a shot.

11:12 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

In a way, I like Iron Bowls like this. It has been about 4 or 5 years since there was an Iron Bowl where I thought there was a chance we wouldn't win. I would have preferred if both teams had a good season, but maybe that will be next year.

I do believe we have a chance because Auburn isn't as bad as our record indicates. I also am of the opinion Bama isn't as good as their record indicates, although they are definitely good. They have just been fortunate that Clemson, Tennessee, and LSU had off years. Even UGA isn't as good as anticipated, but the Bama beat down of them has been by far their most impressive opponent. Ole Miss would probably come in second.

Randy Rosetta of the Baton Rouge Advocate believes a loss would signal something he's already suspected: "Alabama isn't playing the best football at the end of the season. The Tide could have and should have lost to LSU, didn't overwhelm against Mississippi State, and a loss this season to Auburn at home would be hard to justify."

I can't believe that tomorrow is Iron Bowl Eve. I haven't been this excited about an Iron Bowl in a long time.

I am very encouraged from the attitude I am seeing from CTT and the players. This could prove to be a very interesting game. Should we loose, Bama managed to beat the worst Auburn team in 10 years. Should we win, the streak goes to 7, Bama can kiss the BCSMNC goodbye, and the Bama nation will be stunned.

This could get very interesting if we can find a way to move the ball.

Amongst many other things at the great feast, I was also thankful for not being a Notre Dame fan. At his current salary, Weis is charging the Irish 1.3 million per win; and will have his big paw out for alot more than that if he gets canned. Compared to that, we have gotten alot more than that for a lot less dough....yet another thing for which to give thanks.

2:23 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Notre Dame demonstrated the danger of hiring an unproven head coach and giving him an extravagant buy out. I still can't believe Notre Dame was dumb enough to do that.

2:39 PM
Blogger Kris said...

I don't see how they can give him more time either. They have had great recruiting classes since he has been there and he has yet to win with it. While I hate $aban, I have to concede that on top of being a great recruiter, he can win with what he brings in.

2:46 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Weis won a lot his first couple of seasons, but Notre Dame has fallen apart since. It is much different to sustain a program than it is to turn one around. I think it takes a different type of coach.
