Another official interviewee: Rodney Garner
The former Auburn player (and current UGA assistant) issued a statement through Georgia this evening:
“Auburn University, my alma mater, contacted me recently about its open head coaching position. Based on my respect for the Auburn program, we had a conversation about that opportunity. My family and I love Athens and the University of Georgia and are completely happy here. I’m sure the process will take its proper course and I don’t think it would be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

It would be fantastic to have Rodney back in the fold! Hopefully the next HC will call him home.
like he has a chance, swallow the pride and beg for the job

Wow, is it just me, or has anyone else ever heard such a straightforward and truthful-sounding statement from a coaching candidate before?
Why can't other HC prospects say something like this? Why do the rest of them insist on the obligatory waffle-worded denials?
Is it because RG has zero shot at the job that he can say something that honest?
Guessing this is gauging interest to come home in some form but not as head coach.
Can we please get rid of Jacobs?
Seen where we lost a tough battle with Vany for that Johnson kid. I am not a big star guy but we have to battle the big boys in recruiting for the players everyone wants, 5 stars or not. It is always great to turn a 3 star into a great player but GA FLA BAMA are going after these guys for a reason. Has nothing to do with how many stars beside their names.
RunInRed63, what have you got against Jacobs? He is a member of the family and seems to love Auburn.
Brent Lane"
"Is it because RG has zero shot at the job that he can say something that honest?"
Yes.
Family Reunion 09: Everybody come home for the dinner on the grounds, hosted by your new coach, Turner Gill.
Just sent a request to be added to the HABOTN Facebook. Also, i've been out of town for a while with work and haven't been able to order my HABOTN t-shirt...will get that completed ASAP!
Oh, and Coach Turner Gill, come on home to AU!
Checking in for any new developments. It appears everyone is asleep. Don't they know there is still no HC? Slackers.
This comment has been removed by the author.
I would rather have RG than Turner Gill that's for sure.
Garner wasn't as evasive, he admited he talked to someone.
JD,
You'd rather have a coach with no experience, even as a coordinator than a guy who has been a HC and built up a formerly sorry program?
JD - I don't understand your preference for Gardner over Gill.

Chill, folks.
It's all a part of the process.
I'm still believing.
BOOM!
Welcome home, Jet. Bout dang time.
Welcome to Cheryl, too. I'll say it again. Always good to see the HABOTN getting a little more chickalicious.
Thanks, Monica. :-)
Something tells me that most of the proven coaches don't want to come and deal with Lowder and TPTB. We may have to take our chances on someone like Gill. I'm willing to bet recruiting would TAKE OFF under Gill.
I agree, Josh. I think TT finally had ENOUGH.
I guess y'all can put me in the Pat Nix camp for the next Auburn coach.
He's from up this way, so let's bring Coach Nix home to Auburn!
Also, welcome Cheryl. Glad you joined. Sadly there is one Bama fan in our collection of football fanatics. Heckuva guy though.
Would it be creepy if I told you that I brought back Muschamp in a duffel bag to my house (I'm giving him crackers and water) making him listen to a continuous loop of the nation's top new bluegrass-ska band Jet and the Sonic Boom's cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" until he says he will be the coach?
Yeah, I thought so.
Is there any wonder I missed you, Jet? Ya freak.
Some of the songs on Jet and the Sonic Boom's album are:
One Little S (The Difference Between Talk and Stalk)
The Restraining Order Blues
Nix Nix
A Yes from FSJ Means We Say Nay
Thanks, FSJ. I don't mind Alabama fans. I just cant stand "Bamrs, Bamzos or Tiders." There IS a difference. :-)
Jet:
I can't believe you see through my comments like that... :-)
FSJ is a Bamzo.
Cheryl - Faker (Some call him FSJ) put the Bam in Bamzo. Be ye not deceived.
Peter - Have you slept in the last 24 hours?
Thanks for the heads up, Monica and PF! I will now be wary of ANYTHING FSJ says!
Cheryl:
FSJ= Harmless
Watch out for Jet though.
What day are we on now, waiting for the annoucement that will surely send us over 500 comments? JGT, will the smokescreen end before the new year or are the flames burning bright?
Will we have a new HC by days end?
Josh - If we have a HC by the end of today I will eat the lovely poinsetta someone just gave me. However, that is a very cute baby in your picture.
Didn't know if any of the HOTTIES that followed recruiting heard this story yet...Auburn was after him according to all I've read..along with LSU and others.
http://www.nbc15online.com/news/local/story/Local-football-player-shoots-himself-to-death-in/jZfd5ehfjke-aDGRf2qBlQ.cspx
24 hours? No. I'm looking at 2 of the last 72 at this point. I anticipate passing out when I run out of energy drinks. Should happen sometime after lunch if my calculations are correct.
Jet's been in Texas for 5 days ... he's back now ... announcement in the next 48 hours.
Coincidence? Hmmm.
See, I can be just as self-absorbed as FSJ!
Just kidding, FSJ, you ol' Bamzo, you.
Actually, I've got to give it up for FSJ ... he's the one who told Saban to get the restraining order against our DBs where they couldn't line up with 10 yards of Julio Jones.
FSJ = crafty, wily, cagey.
Kind of like the Serpent of old.
Brian - That is absolutely tragic. What a heartbreaker.
Jet - You don't have to apologize to Faker. He relishes being the only posting bama boy here! He wears his bamzoness among the hotties like a badge of honor! Ever post about him makes his little heart go pitter patter. This post is making him smile right now as he reads it. :-)
Josh in Leeds,
you can holla at me @ 888-546-3131 and we can get that t-shirt problem taken care of pronto amigo.
your trusted t-shirt maker,
scottie b.
This has got to get settled soon. I have real actual work that must be done, not to mention the Christmas shopping, baking, decorating, etc.
Jay, you are making me VERY nervous when you keep bringing Bobby Petrino's name into the mix. I have a visceral reaction to the man's name... and it's not a nice one.
Monica ...
Sshhhh. It's part of my evil plot to lull him into a false sense of security, send you in to give him a hug. While he's basking in your queenly glow, Eddie and I are going to chop block him.
It's called "Operation A Tree Falls in Gadsden."
*shhhhhing immediately*
Monica, thank you! She's my little pride and joy...5 weeks old tomorrow.
Scottie b, i'll be calling you shortly!
Monica,
Good morning!
If I created a login "Boy named Sue" would that make habotn more "chickalicious"?
Good morning back to you, Tar. I think that would make the HABOTN a lil more transalicious. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Auburn had to interview Garner as a courtesy. When riding high at Tennessee and his first couple of years at UGa he said some unkind things about Mom, and Mom has a long memory.
Jimbo looks like Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs in that pic....."It rubs the lotion on its skin...."
As the self-absorbed, self-appointed, Bama-hatin' new Power That Be at Auburn, Rodney is hereby given a full and unconditional pardon ... well, he will be given one upon acceptance of my offer to him of the position of Assistant Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator/Do Anything and Everything in Recruiting Short of Getting Us on Probation under the regime of Athletic Director Jet and HFC Boom "Will Muschamp" Shakalaka.
Jump aboard the Jet, folks. It's about to take off!
Oh, by the way, daily chats with the AD and reduced ticket prices for Hotties.
Jimbo spoke to the QB Club here last night in a collarless shirt. How Terry Bowden of him.
Can you still track the Auburn Jet online?
astatguy, I'm new to HABOTN. Who's Mom?
I will be named the new head coach of Auburn at 2:30 today. I expect you all to tune in.
Monica,
Did I detect a Seinfeld reference?
Cheryl - You do, indeed! I love me some Sienfeld.
I track em all the time.
They tried to be tricky and change one of the tail numbers, but that's not enough to trick the HABOTN.
Seinfeld, too.
I looked up the tail number but flightaware.com has no record of it.
Monica,
My favorite episode was when the four of them had the contest to see who could go the longest. The second time I saw it was with my mom and she thought it was hysterical! LOL
Cheryl,
Welcome aboard! I believe "Mom" referred to AU, Rodney Garner's alma mater.
Jan Terri to be named AU's next HC--is she an offensive mind or defensive coach?
JAC,
I would venture a guess and say offensive.
Gotcha, TarHeel. Thanks.
Jan Terri - Just plain ole offensive.
Cheryl - That is a HABOTN favorite episode. Through strange acts of nature I somehow I had never seen the entire episode until a pal recently hooked me up on Youtube.
Good stuff.
Jan Terri's first order of business will be taking the team on a Journey to Mars!
It will be an adventuwe fo youuuuu!
It will be fuu--uuuu-uu-uuuuuunnn!
The team seems to be excited about the trip. When told of the journey, Kodi Burns said, "Beam me up, Scottie (B from Tennessee)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uOwVg2B79E
Jay Tate, let's say you had an extra $100 in your pocket and you had to wager on three names to be the next head coach. Which would you pick, and rank them in order of confidence.
I would take the $100 and buy something cool with it. Why waste money gambling?
michael, i wish i could've 'beamed' kodi into the endzone a few more times this year.
I wish we could have beamed Kodi into the huddle (or lack there of) in the early parts of the season when it was clear as day to every one but CTF that Todd's arm just wasn't where it needed to be.
Michael,
I'll let you be my financial adviser.
BTW, why are we all here when some of us have a boatload of work today. No announcement until Jacobs gets back to AU. Anyone know if that is today? Tomorrow?
Jay G,
How do you track the corporate jets? Would it not seem the most clandestine way of get certain 3rd parties to areas to talk to other 3rd parties. I mean if it were me, the only time the Auburn jet would be used would after everything is done and the new coach, whoever it is, is brought back to enjoy the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade.
Cheryl,
diagnostic? CT? US? MR? NM?
I only spend my money on sure things like the Lottery, the zimbabwe stock markets, and Jai Alai games.
ok, i'll answer my own question.
Because it's the HABOTN and there's no place I'd rather be than in the company of my HOTTIE friends.
In a shocking move today, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs announces that the next Auburn Head football coach will receive a free pine box as a signing bonus.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Why will this Houston Nutt idea never go away? Several boards are talking about him being a target still.
I don't want to hear Nutt's name again. Just not understanding the fascination.
I've never listened to John Longshore that much before, just here & there when people have mentioned to listen in on here.
I've listened to most of the show today, I just don't see the appeal. He's a horrible radio guy. Does anyone here like him that can defend him?
Cheryl..... Interesting that you should mention that particular episode because I am indeed "Master of My Domain".......
I used to listen to Longshore, but his schtick is OLD. Nothing new has come out of his mouth for 10 years that I can tell. He is a bammer, but won't admit it. In fact denies it. He is unprofessional, regularly gets things wrong. And when he does get things wrong, instead of admitting it, he belittles the subject or the person. I feel sorry for Barry McKnight. He has had to carry him like a bag of wet cement.
i'm not a big fan of Longshore but that show is a heckuva lot better than we get in Knoxville in the mornings.
scottie b is right. It is still better than most every show I have listened to. That includes the two Auburn shows. I listen to them instead of the finebaum bammer lovefest.
Maybe it's Longshore's Terry Bowden type voice.
Plus it was just irritating this morning as it seems they were thinking Nix and Garner were legit HC interviews.
In another shocking development, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs announces that Paul Finebaum will be interviewed for the head coaching vacancy. Jacobs states that Auburn is an equal opportunity employer, as evidenced by the interviewing of Gill and Garner. Bringing Finebaum in will ensure that the moron segment of the potential hires is represented.
Scottie B - I have shirts requested and was listed as a non payee. Can you remind me what I requested?
You Da Man!!
Hey All! At work and nothing is still going on. Jeez.
AU1N04, you were down for 1/M, & 1/XL.
you can holla at me at work now and i can have them in the mail today. 888-546-3131.
I take that back. There is news....it is a crawl on ESPN that says xCTT's Mom said he was canned.
Mom's always know best.
Scottie - I got your info and will reach out when I get the chance.
AU1N04, it would be very interesting if Tuberville was really fired. If so, Jacobs deserves an oscar nomination.
from what i've heard from those who know tubs personally, he was fired.
Anybody going to join the protest in Auburn today?
Jay, are you going to go check it out?
I do find it very possible that Tuberville was given the option to resign, but Jacob's begging him to stay thing, accompanied by the so called desire of the president to have him stay were pretty impressive. If those things turn out to be lies, Jacobs, and possibly the Gogue, should be fired.
I never thought he was "fired". However I'm pretty sure a scenario was set up where he knew that if he didn't turn it around in 2009 then he'd be gone and that people would be waiting on that one mistake to happen to let him go.
I figure they did leave the decision up to Tubs, but used enough leverage that he knew he wasn't wanted.
So fired? No. Convinced that it was in his best interests to take the money and run? Probably.
after Jacobs' waffling for a few days, tubs is tired of playing games:
tubs: so do i have a job or not?
jacobs: no
tubs: give me my check.
Longshore really denies he's a bammer? I can't imagine anyone could defend him or his value as a radio personality. Ya know that thing I say about the lemon. He does that to me.
Just sayin...
i say 80% fired
WarEagleRK, if the scenario you paint is correct, I think that is exactly what I would do if I were Jacobs. I would have acknowledged that Tuberville accepted blame for getting Auburn Franklined and let him know that it is up to him to fix it. I would also make it clear that a coach that has been at a school 10 years will not be given 3 or 4 years to rebuild a program. Tuberville said he was convinced he could turn things around. I would have had him put up or shut up by having him agree to reduce his buyout for 2009 conditionally on the record in 2009. It is possible that is what Jacobs proposed and Tuberville wasn't willing to risk his golden parachute.
My mom always thinks I like Texas hash, a southwester dish she makes. I don't like Texas hash and I never have. I have even told her this, and she forgets. Moms don't know everything, you know.
Potato/potato (pronounce them those two different ways). They would have let him stay under their conditions. He chose not to. At least, that is the rumor. He was fired/quit/ whatever.
I think Tuberville looked at what he had coming back next year and realized there was no way he could have a good enough season to keep his job. It was either "resign" now or wait until possibly in the middle of next year and get fired.
It would hurt his legacy and pride to get fired in the middle of a season.
Either way, he was going to be a very rich man. So why delay the inevitable.
as long as we're living in the past (week)...
I liked Tubs a whole lot. But no one making $3mil should keep his job after 5-7, unless brand new coach building up a messed up program... sort of like the next AU coach will have to do.
I think Jim in Scranton is dead on. I would add that I don't CTT had the 'fire in his belly' anymore to really get through the next season.
Jim, I think we had the talent to contend of the SEC West title next season, but it seems very unlikely now. I expect us to see several players take the NFL route and the recruiting class has already been damaged. That, coupled with a large change in the coaching staff, will make that impossible.
Also, look for a lot of rookies to leave. The collective bargaining agreement that allows rookies to attain huge sums of money ends at the end of next season. If you're a prospect and aren't a senior, it's hard to not come out this year if you think you can make a team. If you're a huge prospect you potentially could miss out on millions.
TarHeelTiger, I don't view Auburn as a messed up program. I consider it a very good program that had a very bad year. If you look at this team, it was very young. We return a lot of starters. We should have a lot of depth defensively, except possibly at the tackle spots.
Offensively, I think we have the talent to get it done with the right coaching. Most of our losses this season were very close, even the loss to Georgia. This team is not nearly as bad as the record indicated.
Rookies= potential college players looking to make the jump. Edit feature, where are you?
Steve,
I think we had the talent to contend of the SEC West title next season, but it seems very unlikely now. I expect us to see several players take the NFL route and the recruiting class has already been damaged. That, coupled with a large change in the coaching staff, will make that impossible.
;-)
I just don't see where the talent is on this team. It took excellent coaching in 2006 and 2007 by 2 guys that aren't there anymore to put together respectable seasons.
The problem with being a CEO coach like Tuberville is that he was only as good as his assistants. There was a big dropoff after Borges and Muschamp left. It is pretty evident now that Tuberville would have been replacing 2 coordinators again next year. Not a good thing if you are trying to save your job.
FYI...You should be able to watch the protest online if you go to the auburn.edu site. At the bottom of the site is a "more features" button and you can watch the webcams on campus
Jim, where do you think Rhoads was going? I hadn't heard of him getting any offers. I think we would likely have been able to keep him. Replacing Franklin was a given.
From what Jay said yesterday, Rhodes didn't seem to feel like he fit in here.
He's good, but we can get as good or better.
WarEagleRK, I am not sure where we will get another one of the top 10 defensive coaches in the nation. That just doesn't seem likely. I think it was clear Rhoads just wanted to be left alone to do his job and he did it very well. He appeared to be the perfect fit for Auburn.
Welcome, Cheryl. Talking about Mom means talking about your family, in this case Auburn.
It may very well be that Auburn wasn't for Rhoads due to all the drama. The constant drama about the offense had to irritate him.
What is this protest people keep mentioning? I'll bet they aren't protesting the right to protest. I'll bet if that is your stance, your public display options for you and other like-minded protest haters are quite limited.
There is apparently going to be a protest of the Tuberville firing/resignation. I read something on here last night that over 400 people had signed up to be there on facebook. I consider it a pointless thing. The damage has already be done. You can't unscrew it.
Looks like you can add Derek Dooley to the complimentary interview list.
From some of the comments I have heard and the fact that he already left; I think Jay mentioned something in an earlier post.
I will add that I think CPR did a pretty good job with the defense.
It just seemed like there were critical breakdowns at the end of some games. It didn't help that they were on the field way too much and were very banged up.
No the protest won't really accomplish anything, but I like the fact that people are voicing their opinions. and JJ is dumb.
Steve,
I'm not quite sure Paul Rhodes was one of the top ten DC's in the country.
Maybe all the offensive problems and injuries from this year hid that from me, but what I saw was a good fundamental coach who didn't scheme like the top level DC's seem to do today.
Aubie: Did you take the picture of the I-65 sign? I know the owner and was just curious.
The firing of Tuberville makes me wonder if he would have been fired for any loss to Bama in the last six years or if it was just the way we lost this game and the appearance that the program is in disarray?
Just saw on the news here in AU that the protest will start at noon at the Haley Center. They are expecting between 500 to 600 folks. I think this is pretty cool, maybe pointless but cool.
JJ out Tubs in.
I still think it was his fault. Can you really call it getting fired when they are letting you stay if you meet certain conditions? Or do you guys believe that he was just straight up fired?
yes, fired. If the buyout was paid, it was a firing.
I hate $&@€£%* conference calls!
Will, you going?
According to Goldberg "Auburn interviewed Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley for its vacant head coaching job Monday, said someone familiar with the interview.
I stand behind what I said about preferring Garner over Gill. However I really would rather not have either one. Garner has shown he knows this conference and Gill hasn't. I also think RG would be given more of a chance than TG. If TG doesn't win early the critics would be insane. RG being an AU man whose learning the ropes may be given more of a benefit of the doubt in inner AU circles. I'm not changing my mind on this one.
Any coach who struggles or fails no matter where they graduated from will be ran off at about the same pace.
I think I'm going to pass on this one Harrison. Even at 28 I think I would be the oldest person there by prob 5 yrs. Do you think it would change the atmosphere if I brought my wife and kid?
In situations such as this impressions may be more important than reality. I consider the protests detrimental. We need to send out a message of unity and stability. You have to ask yourself why a top notch coach would want to come to Auburn. Money isn't a good answer since there are other schools that are willing to shell out the big bucks for a top notch coach.
CTT is gone. Let it go.
If CTT was really fired, I would think that Jacobs already had some top notch coaches in mind for interviews. So far we haven't interviewed anyone impressive, or at least it hasn't been made public.
We need to wait and judge Jacobs on what he comes up with and don't get caught up in the public interviews. The private ones are the ones which will likely yield a new head coach.
Agree both will be under tremendous pressure to win. Garner may get more sympathy from some than TG would. Gill also has not ever recruited these areas and that would be a major adjustment. Gosh navigating this on a blackberry is no bueno!
So I'm guessing that at some point during the protest they expect Jacobs to come out and say we've changed our mind, welcome back Tub?
You could meet some college girls!
WarEagleRK, you are correct. Protests before Tuberville resigned may have been meaningful. Protests after the fact are detrimental.
Two notes
1) I think CPR was a great fundamentals coach, our DB's seemed to get their heads around better than they ever did when CWM was here, however, I couldn't stand the short passes we continually gave up b/c our corners were playing 10 yards off the ball, and we never seemed to have the opposing offenses on their heels due to our blitz and coverage schemes the way we did under Chizik, Muschamp and even Gibbs. I had no problem with Rhoads, but I don't think he was among the elite X and O type DC's the way Muschamp was.
2) I don't get why everyone keep saying we need someone with SEC ties. Where was Meyers SEC ties before going to UF, what about Sabans before going to LSU. I think we need to get the best coach we can get and any SEC ties are a bonus, rather than settle for a average coach (Nutt) or someone with no head coach or even coordinator experience (Gardner)who knows the SEC.
Derek Dooley-the son of a legendary coach. Haven't we already done that? It didn't seem to work out so well the first time.
that post is way too long
It is very apparent that Auburn screwed the pooch in how this firing/resignation was handled. At this point we need to select another pooch.
Nutt is far from being an average coach. The average coach in the SEC hasn't been to the SECCG as often as Nutt. The average coach isn't offerred the Nebraska job. There are coaches that may be better in the SEC, but Nutt is far from average.
College kids just want to protest anything. I mean next thing you know women will want the right to vote and burning bras...
are there going to be molotov cocktails at this protest?
This comment has been removed by the author.
Tiger Rags has a "Thank You Coach Tubs" t-shirt.
Protest=Good Thing! Sometimes you dont have a chance to act before something bad happens. Who knew CTT would come out of those meetings NOT being the coach.
Besides anytime young people have the opportunity to stand up for what they believe in, they should. Will it matter with the CTT firing, probably not? Will it remind the admin that they are watching what they do and holding them accountable? Sure will
AUBigCat, the administration will likely not give a rats butt about the protest unless they get a huge turnout. From what I understand, they were talking around 400 people. If they turned out several thousand, the administration might take note. With 400, it won't be a blip on the radar.
i hear there's streaking in the quad following the demonstration. that could be a nasty lie, though.
none of the chickalicious hotties are posting; they must be at the protest/streak
"WE'RE GOING STREAKING THROUGH THE QUAD AND TO THE GYMNASIUM"
Sorry, the Old School quotes got into me it happens sometimes I can't stop it
let's all go to Jay GT's new post/thread
I dont know Steve with all the negative press about the way AU handled this, 400 people might look massive. Besides that facebook group has like 1700+ members I think. They also seem to share the same opinion of most people I've seen online...that being fire JJ.
Firing Jacobs would just add to the instability. Protesting can be good at times, but it can also end up like the Vietnam war protests that cost tens of thousands of people their lives. The intentions were good. The results turned out not so good.
