Another official interviewee: Rodney Garner

The former Auburn player (and current UGA assistant) issued a statement through Georgia this evening:

“Auburn University, my alma mater, contacted me recently about its open head coaching position. Based on my respect for the Auburn program, we had a conversation about that opportunity. My family and I love Athens and the University of Georgia and are completely happy here. I’m sure the process will take its proper course and I don’t think it would be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

Wow, is it just me, or has anyone else ever heard such a straightforward and truthful-sounding statement from a coaching candidate before?

Why can't other HC prospects say something like this? Why do the rest of them insist on the obligatory waffle-worded denials?

Is it because RG has zero shot at the job that he can say something that honest?

Seen where we lost a tough battle with Vany for that Johnson kid. I am not a big star guy but we have to battle the big boys in recruiting for the players everyone wants, 5 stars or not. It is always great to turn a 3 star into a great player but GA FLA BAMA are going after these guys for a reason. Has nothing to do with how many stars beside their names.

I do find it very possible that Tuberville was given the option to resign, but Jacob's begging him to stay thing, accompanied by the so called desire of the president to have him stay were pretty impressive. If those things turn out to be lies, Jacobs, and possibly the Gogue, should be fired.

10:38 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I never thought he was "fired". However I'm pretty sure a scenario was set up where he knew that if he didn't turn it around in 2009 then he'd be gone and that people would be waiting on that one mistake to happen to let him go.

I figure they did leave the decision up to Tubs, but used enough leverage that he knew he wasn't wanted.

So fired? No. Convinced that it was in his best interests to take the money and run? Probably.

i say 80% fired

10:46 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

WarEagleRK, if the scenario you paint is correct, I think that is exactly what I would do if I were Jacobs. I would have acknowledged that Tuberville accepted blame for getting Auburn Franklined and let him know that it is up to him to fix it. I would also make it clear that a coach that has been at a school 10 years will not be given 3 or 4 years to rebuild a program. Tuberville said he was convinced he could turn things around. I would have had him put up or shut up by having him agree to reduce his buyout for 2009 conditionally on the record in 2009. It is possible that is what Jacobs proposed and Tuberville wasn't willing to risk his golden parachute.

I think Tuberville looked at what he had coming back next year and realized there was no way he could have a good enough season to keep his job. It was either "resign" now or wait until possibly in the middle of next year and get fired.

It would hurt his legacy and pride to get fired in the middle of a season.

Either way, he was going to be a very rich man. So why delay the inevitable.

Jim, I think we had the talent to contend of the SEC West title next season, but it seems very unlikely now. I expect us to see several players take the NFL route and the recruiting class has already been damaged. That, coupled with a large change in the coaching staff, will make that impossible.

10:56 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Also, look for a lot of rookies to leave. The collective bargaining agreement that allows rookies to attain huge sums of money ends at the end of next season. If you're a prospect and aren't a senior, it's hard to not come out this year if you think you can make a team. If you're a huge prospect you potentially could miss out on millions.

10:58 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

TarHeelTiger, I don't view Auburn as a messed up program. I consider it a very good program that had a very bad year. If you look at this team, it was very young. We return a lot of starters. We should have a lot of depth defensively, except possibly at the tackle spots.

Offensively, I think we have the talent to get it done with the right coaching. Most of our losses this season were very close, even the loss to Georgia. This team is not nearly as bad as the record indicated.

I just don't see where the talent is on this team. It took excellent coaching in 2006 and 2007 by 2 guys that aren't there anymore to put together respectable seasons.

The problem with being a CEO coach like Tuberville is that he was only as good as his assistants. There was a big dropoff after Borges and Muschamp left. It is pretty evident now that Tuberville would have been replacing 2 coordinators again next year. Not a good thing if you are trying to save your job.

WarEagleRK, I am not sure where we will get another one of the top 10 defensive coaches in the nation. That just doesn't seem likely. I think it was clear Rhoads just wanted to be left alone to do his job and he did it very well. He appeared to be the perfect fit for Auburn.

RG being an AU man whose learning the ropes may be given more of a benefit of the doubt in inner AU circles. I'm not changing my mind on this one.

Any coach who struggles or fails no matter where they graduated from will be ran off at about the same pace.

I think I'm going to pass on this one Harrison. Even at 28 I think I would be the oldest person there by prob 5 yrs. Do you think it would change the atmosphere if I brought my wife and kid?

In situations such as this impressions may be more important than reality. I consider the protests detrimental. We need to send out a message of unity and stability. You have to ask yourself why a top notch coach would want to come to Auburn. Money isn't a good answer since there are other schools that are willing to shell out the big bucks for a top notch coach.

CTT is gone. Let it go.

If CTT was really fired, I would think that Jacobs already had some top notch coaches in mind for interviews. So far we haven't interviewed anyone impressive, or at least it hasn't been made public.

We need to wait and judge Jacobs on what he comes up with and don't get caught up in the public interviews. The private ones are the ones which will likely yield a new head coach.

Agree both will be under tremendous pressure to win. Garner may get more sympathy from some than TG would. Gill also has not ever recruited these areas and that would be a major adjustment. Gosh navigating this on a blackberry is no bueno!

So I'm guessing that at some point during the protest they expect Jacobs to come out and say we've changed our mind, welcome back Tub?

WarEagleRK, you are correct. Protests before Tuberville resigned may have been meaningful. Protests after the fact are detrimental.

Two notes

1) I think CPR was a great fundamentals coach, our DB's seemed to get their heads around better than they ever did when CWM was here, however, I couldn't stand the short passes we continually gave up b/c our corners were playing 10 yards off the ball, and we never seemed to have the opposing offenses on their heels due to our blitz and coverage schemes the way we did under Chizik, Muschamp and even Gibbs. I had no problem with Rhoads, but I don't think he was among the elite X and O type DC's the way Muschamp was.

2) I don't get why everyone keep saying we need someone with SEC ties. Where was Meyers SEC ties before going to UF, what about Sabans before going to LSU. I think we need to get the best coach we can get and any SEC ties are a bonus, rather than settle for a average coach (Nutt) or someone with no head coach or even coordinator experience (Gardner)who knows the SEC.

Derek Dooley-the son of a legendary coach. Haven't we already done that? It didn't seem to work out so well the first time.

It is very apparent that Auburn screwed the pooch in how this firing/resignation was handled. At this point we need to select another pooch.

Nutt is far from being an average coach. The average coach in the SEC hasn't been to the SECCG as often as Nutt. The average coach isn't offerred the Nebraska job. There are coaches that may be better in the SEC, but Nutt is far from average.

Protest=Good Thing! Sometimes you dont have a chance to act before something bad happens. Who knew CTT would come out of those meetings NOT being the coach.

Besides anytime young people have the opportunity to stand up for what they believe in, they should. Will it matter with the CTT firing, probably not? Will it remind the admin that they are watching what they do and holding them accountable? Sure will

AUBigCat, the administration will likely not give a rats butt about the protest unless they get a huge turnout. From what I understand, they were talking around 400 people. If they turned out several thousand, the administration might take note. With 400, it won't be a blip on the radar.

I dont know Steve with all the negative press about the way AU handled this, 400 people might look massive. Besides that facebook group has like 1700+ members I think. They also seem to share the same opinion of most people I've seen online...that being fire JJ.

Firing Jacobs would just add to the instability. Protesting can be good at times, but it can also end up like the Vietnam war protests that cost tens of thousands of people their lives. The intentions were good. The results turned out not so good.
