An interesting radio interview

SportsCall here in Auburn had an interesting caller on the air earlier today.

She was identified as "Amy" and, as you'll read, says her husband is/was an Auburn assistant and was meeting with Raymond Cotton Jr. when notified of Tuberville's dismissal

Steve Ensminger was in Maryland. Steve Ensminger is the primary recruiting contact for Cotton. Steve Ensminger has a wife named Amy.

``My husband was sitting in Maryland in the Cotton's home. This is how Auburn runs things. This is going to hurt recruiting. All the coaches are on the road. They knew they were going to do this. You do it right -- you tell them don't leave out, don't go on the road. Let the families know first. This is how Auburn runs things -- just like they did in 03."

``Everyone on this staff has busted their butt, has done eveything for Auburn and this Auburn family. There a lot of people from within who couldn't wait for the time and the place to get rid of us. We're sad. We love it in Auburn. We have a lot of friends. I hate it for the kids. I hate ot for the families. To hear it this way, that's just wrong. It's not professional whatsoever."

Wait, isn't Tubs and his family about to collect $6M for him underperforming on the job? I'd be surprised if the assistants aren't going to earn some six figure compensation just like Franklin did. Thats not chump change, by the way. I find it hard to feel bad for people that are going to make millions for not having to do anything.

Someone said she mentioned bama is cheating. I have a friend who was in an SEC team's staff. He said the common conception was that Alabama is totally cheating. He was at a different school, so put that together with the Clemson coach's comment and now Ensminger's wife, and I am really starting to think this whole bama thing may blow up. That would make me happier than any new coaching hire!

Also, bad form on the wife calling in. Who wants to hire a dude later on whose wife calls into sports radio?

Or wait until Tuberville gets another job and be a Tuberville fan.

Me, I'm going to be with my school no matter what.

Auburn could take a lesson from Clemson, Tennessee, or MSU on how to get rid of a coach. You don't get rid of one of the most successful coaches in school history like this. The administration looks like a bunch of bumbling idiots. What do you bet we loose Cotton, who is probably the prize of this recruiting class. We will have to wait and see about McCalleb. It is time for the Doug Barfield days. Enjoy the rid.

You reap what you sow. Period. End of story.

On to the next dummy.

PDWT - I don't believe you on the season ticket thing. You don't support a tired coach, you don't support a stupid administration - you support a university that you are a part of and believe in. Or that's what I do anyway.

So, I'll be there next year. Just like this year. And last year. And the years before that. I believe in Auburn ... and LOVE it.

I just read that he resigned... that would lend credence to the staff loyalty theory.

A case in which I do not fault the PTB: Said give the next OC latitude to make hires (like Spina said awhile ago). Tubs says no. They say, OK, think about it. Thinks about it a couple of days, still says no, they say you have to, we are ordering you to, he is all like then let's talk how we're gonna split ways, they say f it, let's split ways.

Honestly, I have no problem with that. Like everyone else, I have a big problem with them taking this long to figure out they didn't want him period. But if the ball was in his court, then so it goes. Divorce is messy.

I think any perception of the AU administration effing this thing up can be cleansed with a good hire.

I don't appreciate it though. No sir, not one bit. I don't appreciate seeing my university, the place where I was educated, became a man, built a vision for the future, cried over, sweated over, and walked away proud, used as a tool by tiny little men with very large egos. You better believe that pisses me off. But, that will get fixed one day too. Count on it.

My point was, I will continue to be an Auburn man. This is a little over the top, but it's what I truly believe. Auburn is a nation unto itself in a way. We are a people, and I love those people.

Auburn is headed into the right direction again. This is what I was talking about Sunday night. This is the kind of thing that actually makes the competition nervous.

Don't feel sorry for a guy that ultimately wanted this. The little lady should voice her complaints with Tubs, not "Auburn". This has nothing to do with 2003. So put those emotions on a shelf.

By the way, Chris, I am an engineer, so spelling doesn't count. As long as it compiles, it is fine.

I didn't think this season could get any worse, but Auburn just reached an all time low. I don't know why anyone would shed a tear for Tuberville. It is Auburn that lost in the scenario.

This will go down as the day of the bonehead move.

6:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And as for 2003, this very much does have something to do with it. The damage done to recruiting after our previous bonehead move was a big cause.

The bigger issue here is that Tuberville took a risk to get to the next level. He wasn't satisfied with 9 or 10 wins a season. He could have kept his job by playing it safe and he didn't. The next coach will play it safe because of this idiotic example.

6:20 PM

I hate to say it, but Auburn has to do like Bama, Bama went out on a limb and canned Shula late, so they had to put all their cards on the table and money and go after big dogs, our hire cant be some small time rebuilder, we need a name and a powerful coach...plain and simple....and its not a lawyer who likes pirates i.e. Mike Leach...

6:23 PM

On the upside, it is now an appropriate time to discuss candidates. After the way this was handled, I doubt we could go after a top name, but possibly an up an comer like Muschamp or Fischer. My gut tells me that someone like Davis or Leach would just laugh.

While talking replacements I asked this earlier, but didn't get a response, but is there a reason no one is talking about Chris Peterson anymore? The guy is only like 35-3 in his career as a head coach. He is offensive minded, and hands on. He also has the same amount of BCS experience as Tuberville does. I think after this year, going undefeated, and possibly not being able to go to a BCS game would be reason enough to leave Boise. Plus Auburn can pay him triple his current salary and still be paying him less than Tubs.

Tennessee Tiger, I like the cut of your jib. You have several good points.

Know what we owed Tuberville? A paycheck and a job description. Know what we owe him now? (Counting the 6 mil?) D*ck.

Strange Overtones: I find your overtones, well, strange.

Cats were so overpaid it's gross. Amy Ensminger needs to take a powder. She should've been on a drivers ed wage for the last four years. Gross.

So J Kev is out of line for being hard on a coaches wife who went off on a no-class tirade. I think those of you saying really horrible nasty things about Jay Jacobs need to figure out whether you are the pot or the kettle, eh?

I heard the phone call Jay mentions and it was definitely sad to hear.

But, she also went on to say that Saban owns the state and in so many words said we'd only be able to compete with him if we "went back to the $100 hand shakes like they have done in the past."

So, she lost me at that point. If the staff shared her feelings that we can't compete with Saban and others in this league without cheating, then they don't need to be at Auburn.
