An interesting radio interview
SportsCall here in Auburn had an interesting caller on the air earlier today.
She was identified as "Amy" and, as you'll read, says her husband is/was an Auburn assistant and was meeting with Raymond Cotton Jr. when notified of Tuberville's dismissal
Steve Ensminger was in Maryland. Steve Ensminger is the primary recruiting contact for Cotton. Steve Ensminger has a wife named Amy.
``My husband was sitting in Maryland in the Cotton's home. This is how Auburn runs things. This is going to hurt recruiting. All the coaches are on the road. They knew they were going to do this. You do it right -- you tell them don't leave out, don't go on the road. Let the families know first. This is how Auburn runs things -- just like they did in 03."
``Everyone on this staff has busted their butt, has done eveything for Auburn and this Auburn family. There a lot of people from within who couldn't wait for the time and the place to get rid of us. We're sad. We love it in Auburn. We have a lot of friends. I hate it for the kids. I hate ot for the families. To hear it this way, that's just wrong. It's not professional whatsoever."

hey yall this is what I was talking about
This is a sad day in Auburn on so many levels
only in Alabama....Auburn, Alabama that is
guess it was Steve-E
I agree...I have called Jay Jacobs and emailed them told them they are idiots and puppets and that they made a mistake, Auburn has the worst PR I have ever seen, no more season tickets, ESPN just stated Leach has been contacted = worst hire ever, doesnt fit Auburn he or his spread...Jay I am getting an ulcer
Jay....how much do you think the Monday through Wednesday delay dealt with the admin negotiating with the next coach or with them trying to gets tubbs to agree to major changes
Wait, isn't Tubs and his family about to collect $6M for him underperforming on the job? I'd be surprised if the assistants aren't going to earn some six figure compensation just like Franklin did. Thats not chump change, by the way. I find it hard to feel bad for people that are going to make millions for not having to do anything.
Someone said she mentioned bama is cheating. I have a friend who was in an SEC team's staff. He said the common conception was that Alabama is totally cheating. He was at a different school, so put that together with the Clemson coach's comment and now Ensminger's wife, and I am really starting to think this whole bama thing may blow up. That would make me happier than any new coaching hire!
Also, bad form on the wife calling in. Who wants to hire a dude later on whose wife calls into sports radio?
No I feel bad for Auburn fans, we get the short end of the stick.
Also, I said this in the other thread, but how does she have any idea who the leak was? What if it was Tommy or Jimmy Sexton or the water boy? Just saying. I am surprised the PTB would be sources for columnists and such.
Wow...just wow.
pathetic doesn't even come close.
Bad form to have the wife of a coach accuse another sec school of cheating on a radio show.
Especially from Auburn with our recent outing of the sociology department.
Seriously, woman. What are you thinking. Go pack.
Take that whining **** somewhere else.
Its a bigboy business.
Sorry but all this crap about boo hoo -- woe as me -- feel sorry for me --- YOU'RE A FOOTBALL COACH.
YOU COACH FOOTBALL FOR A LIVING.
you make great money to coach a game.
I'd love to have that opportunity.
Its done.
Suck it up people.
Or wait until Tuberville gets another job and be a Tuberville fan.
Me, I'm going to be with my school no matter what.
Plus, the story hasn't been printed. If he was fired, why did they meet so many times? What did Tuberville do or refuse to do?
i can't get over the mike leach thing and how big of a mistake that would be. How would that be any different than tony franklin coaching the offense, seriously?
my bet is he wouldnt fire his staff...and line in the sand was drawn.
Auburn could take a lesson from Clemson, Tennessee, or MSU on how to get rid of a coach. You don't get rid of one of the most successful coaches in school history like this. The administration looks like a bunch of bumbling idiots. What do you bet we loose Cotton, who is probably the prize of this recruiting class. We will have to wait and see about McCalleb. It is time for the Doug Barfield days. Enjoy the rid.
Jay Jacobs = Idiot...
Basketball, sucks
Baseball, sucks
Football, sucks...
congrats Jay
Anyone remember where Tubs was this time last year?
"Duck" hunting right?
I love how this is such a "bad day to be an Auburn Tiger."
What a joke.
I'm sure they are all upset and she felt like that was the only way she would be able to say what she felt at the time.
Thank you KMO171 and Michael.
Phred will not be shedding any tears for a man who is walking out with 6 mil in hand and for assistants who are covered for period of time much longer than it will take them to find another job. No tears from Phred.
You reap what you sow. Period. End of story.
On to the next dummy.
PDWT - I don't believe you on the season ticket thing. You don't support a tired coach, you don't support a stupid administration - you support a university that you are a part of and believe in. Or that's what I do anyway.
So, I'll be there next year. Just like this year. And last year. And the years before that. I believe in Auburn ... and LOVE it.
I just read that he resigned... that would lend credence to the staff loyalty theory.
In which case, Tubs had to go. I have supported him staying, but not without allowing the next OC to pick his own staff. Props to him for loyalty, but he did have a horrible season. Some changes were needed.
Steve, I love you and everything but.......
ITS LOSE!!!!!!!!!
Not loose.
The screw is LOOSE.
You LOSE your effin mind!
I thought it was a typo before but kinda hard to take you seriously until that's corrected.
Just heard on F'baum, Auburn has hired a search firm to help with locating a new coach. Are you kidding me?
I agree...even Clemson and Tenn. are having to beg and chase after their recruits, and thats when they fired their coaches with class. We will lose I say 75% of the recruits, even if we hire someone outside of Jesus himself....terrible, terrible...terrible...how can they handle this so bad over and over again.
So, Tucrkey --- you theory is he wouldn't fire his stafff but you're mad he was canned???
What if we hired Leach and he hired Franklin as OC .
When you go 5-7 and have 2 weeks to prepare and you show up in T'town with THAT????
But its ok to tell your boss you won't do anything to the staff??
Ummmm kay
Phred...I am just fed up with feeding this animal, Its hard to support an adm. that keeps screwing things up....seriously...i am embaressed,,,
Man I think this is gonna be a bad next couple of years for AU football. This might set us back a good couple of years. Please don't tell me they are going to talk to Bobby Petrino?? Any idea on who is being looked at for the head coach options?
tigerfan.....
my head just might blow up. and So would Kodi Burns's...
Chris Todd would piss his pants in joy.
Muburn we have hired a search firm.
Chris it was handled wrong dont you agree? like they have done every time...If they wanted Tubbs gone come out and do it, dont let it linger or fester. do it...i have no respect for them. I wasnt happy with the season, but give the man who has been there a long time some respect..
A search firm to find a head coach? Are you kidding me????? How many qualified candidates could there be? Is there a monster.com listing for college head football coach? There is a good headhunter I know who got my cousin and job. Maybe they can try her.
turkey CTT didn't always handle things right either.
Jay Jacobs needs all the help he can get, plus he wanted to waste more money. I hope Yella wood and Colonial are happy....dig deep fellas,
A case in which I do not fault the PTB: Said give the next OC latitude to make hires (like Spina said awhile ago). Tubs says no. They say, OK, think about it. Thinks about it a couple of days, still says no, they say you have to, we are ordering you to, he is all like then let's talk how we're gonna split ways, they say f it, let's split ways.
Honestly, I have no problem with that. Like everyone else, I have a big problem with them taking this long to figure out they didn't want him period. But if the ball was in his court, then so it goes. Divorce is messy.
I think any perception of the AU administration effing this thing up can be cleansed with a good hire.
Get the right guy, and nobody will talk about how you handled the old guy. Get the wrong guy and it's a different story (see Mal Moore coaching search 101).
Have we really hired a search firm?
Well Mal did get an A on his final exam
Did it really take that long for Auburn to make a decision? Maybe for us bloggers who follow this stuff minute by minute, but really the season for Auburn has been over for what, three and a half days? That is like half a week. If they would've fired him Monday everyone would have said it was knee jerk from the Bama loss. There was no way to do this that was going to please anyone.
You wanna see Leach's record at Tech?
7-6
7-5
9-5
8-5
8-4
9-3
8-5
9-4
11-1
How is that an upgrade?
JD & Scott that was reported on F'baum. Why do we need to hire a search firm? I was hoping when we fired Tubs we would know who were were going after. Can Jacobs be fired now?
Yes he did Scott.
If Auburn hits one out of the park with a new hire then JJ will get an A as well. If they hire someone like a Petrino, then AU will need to hire a PR firm to perform triage.
AD = DA,
Ron I am with you 100%. Leach is a poor mans Tuberville.
Pat ... I understand how you feel, but my opinion is that they (admin) will also eventually reap what they sow. It's just the way life is.
I don't appreciate it though. No sir, not one bit. I don't appreciate seeing my university, the place where I was educated, became a man, built a vision for the future, cried over, sweated over, and walked away proud, used as a tool by tiny little men with very large egos. You better believe that pisses me off. But, that will get fixed one day too. Count on it.
My point was, I will continue to be an Auburn man. This is a little over the top, but it's what I truly believe. Auburn is a nation unto itself in a way. We are a people, and I love those people.
She needs to keep her trap shut or her husband will lose his job sooner rather than later.
He works for auburn and knew tuberville was getting fired. the assistant coaches will stay on to recruit until another coach is found. I hope she gets blasted for opening her big mouth and airing out our dirty laundry.
Gang,
Leach would be a mistake.
Go Fisher, Muschamp, or Turner Gill.
Amen Phred, Amen.
I'm gonna make this statement on my feelings then I'm gonna get out of the way of this chaos.
This was the wrong decision. AU did it wrong and CTT deserved another year. That being said what I think means less thac Tony Franklins DVD.I am disappointed in AU right now.
So good luck Tommy.
WAR DAMN EAGLE
I am sure they do love it. Getting paid nearly Jay Tate's salary to be mediocre at what you do is not that bad.
Mr. S, I'm with you - Leach would be a HUGE mistake.
It's not an enjoyable day, but a necessary one. You can quibble about this and that ... but a change was in order.
Just try to tune out on all the noise ... forget Colin Cowherd, F-baum and anyone ... they don't matter.
Focus on getting this thing in the right direction, which is not where it was headed.
I say go take a long hard look in the NFL.
Del Rio, Gruden, Peyton, etc. Auburn doesn't need to "settle" here, they need to swing for the fences (like Jay G. with the anons).
Auburn is headed into the right direction again. This is what I was talking about Sunday night. This is the kind of thing that actually makes the competition nervous.
Don't feel sorry for a guy that ultimately wanted this. The little lady should voice her complaints with Tubs, not "Auburn". This has nothing to do with 2003. So put those emotions on a shelf.
Where did everybody go?
Apparently to jump off buildings.
I was wondering the same thing. We must be missing something.
i have a pitchfork and lantern yelling out in front of jay jacobs office.
Why now? They may want to wait and see who The Jays hire before jumping off tall buildings.
This is a move that makes the competition laugh.
By the way, Chris, I am an engineer, so spelling doesn't count. As long as it compiles, it is fine.
I didn't think this season could get any worse, but Auburn just reached an all time low. I don't know why anyone would shed a tear for Tuberville. It is Auburn that lost in the scenario.
This will go down as the day of the bonehead move.
People just need to breathe ... our last 3 hires for football have been solid.
PDWT, if i wasn't stuck at work in knoxville i'd join you.
Scottie B - I love my shirt. :)
Only think that would top this move is to hire Plaxico Burress as our head of security
And as for 2003, this very much does have something to do with it. The damage done to recruiting after our previous bonehead move was a big cause.
The bigger issue here is that Tuberville took a risk to get to the next level. He wasn't satisfied with 9 or 10 wins a season. He could have kept his job by playing it safe and he didn't. The next coach will play it safe because of this idiotic example.
Jet, who would you like to see Auburn hire?
Steve ... UAT folks are laughing no matter what ... we get rid of him, they laugh ... he stays, they laugh.
Forget them.
Remember everybody was laughing at them two years ago because of how stupid they looked.
Who's laughing now?
This is just a moment in time ... now, we have to make sure we get it right, of course ... but we've got a better chance for a brighter future by making the change.
Tommy was done.
I wish that there was some way I could contact Tubs and let him know he was a great coach!
I think a change needed to be made, however it was poorly handled.
Now we have to trust these people to make a good hire.
That scares me.
Jet CTT was solid. But that isnt what folks want right? They want spectacular.
Muschamp, Petrino, Johnson, Davis -- GROUP A
Leach, Kelly -- GROUP B
I hate to say it, but Auburn has to do like Bama, Bama went out on a limb and canned Shula late, so they had to put all their cards on the table and money and go after big dogs, our hire cant be some small time rebuilder, we need a name and a powerful coach...plain and simple....and its not a lawyer who likes pirates i.e. Mike Leach...
On the upside, it is now an appropriate time to discuss candidates. After the way this was handled, I doubt we could go after a top name, but possibly an up an comer like Muschamp or Fischer. My gut tells me that someone like Davis or Leach would just laugh.
He had been solid ... but was slipping ... rapidly.
With regards to Leach has anyone seen this?
Three sources close to the Leach camp said the Texas Tech coach would consider Auburn if the job were open. One source said Leach "would walk across water" to coach in the SEC and at Auburn in particular.
I'd love for it to be Paul Johnson or Butch Davis.
I'd be ok with Petrino too.
If my tuition goes up over this I will be highly agitated
Hey Jay; I think maybe Amy might be right! It appears that she's telling it like it is! I'm mad as hell!
Got my HABOTN t-shirt Monday!
oooh and so it begins....weeks upon weeks of speculation on coaches, recruits, buy outs, where Tubbs is headed.....lord...i need maalox
patdyeswildturkey, it is unlikely we can go after a big name without paying ungodly money with the example that has been set. We should look for a young up and comer, maybe even a Malzahn or someone like that. With the competition the next coach will be faced with, it will be difficult to get a top notch coach to take the job without setting records in terms of coaching salary.
Jet-
My choices would be
Muschamp, Bellotti (which isn't happening) or Gundy (which isn't happening). If we would consider Muschamp, why not Charlie Strong?
Ok I'm done venting let's talk replacments:
Skip Holtz anyone?
JET, NORMALLY A BIG FAN, BUT "OUR LAST THREE HIRES HAVE BEEN SOLID"? THAT WOULD INCLUDE BOWDEN. SORRY FOR THE ALL CAPS. JUST NOTICED, AND I'M LAZY.
Colonial Bank stock shot up huge yesterday, any coincidence?
No, please no Skip Holtz
Do we go after an offensive minded HC or a D guy again?
so you want a safe hire instead of the sexy hire? Its a gamble either way. None of us know if it will pan out. That is what is bad, we could make a bad call and re-hire after 5 years or strike gold no one knows.
What makes people think we can hire a first tier coach into the mess we call an athletic department except by offering a TON of money? Tommy's leaving with a bunch of cash, and we're going to have to call Brinks to get another truckload for the next coach.
also, from what i've heard, yella wood folks picked up the tab for the buyout
Yesterday when the news broke about Colonials bail-out money and the stock shot up I said to my co-workers the buy-out money was in place.
The Holtz thing was a joke by the way RK. :)
If we don't go after Muschamp I would like to see Auburn go after an offensive minded coach.
The fallout's started. Conner decommited.
There will be de-commitments.
There would have been de-commits if Tub had stayed.
It's how recruiting goes.
We will likely lose Cotton and McCalleb. I don't expect to loose a lot of commitments, but we will lose the cream of the crop.
If it comes out that Tubs was offered a shot to change his staff and stay on and THAT'S why it toook 3 and a half days -- will we cut the Admin the slack it deserves?
No Skip Holtz.
I would HATE to have his slobbering idiot cheat of his father associated with MY university.
Sorry, not a big follower of recruiting YET, who is Conner
Does anyone remember the player that earlier this season said he would leave if Tuberville was gone? I can't remember who it was.
Conner -- DB So. Panola HS in MS.
We can get the guys back if we want with the right hire.
Chris, if they dicated staffing changes to Tubberville, then the AD should be fired.
Conner is a DB from Mississippi who wasn't a strong commitment, and when we started losing began waffling. He'll probably wind up at Ole Miss.
While talking replacements I asked this earlier, but didn't get a response, but is there a reason no one is talking about Chris Peterson anymore? The guy is only like 35-3 in his career as a head coach. He is offensive minded, and hands on. He also has the same amount of BCS experience as Tuberville does. I think after this year, going undefeated, and possibly not being able to go to a BCS game would be reason enough to leave Boise. Plus Auburn can pay him triple his current salary and still be paying him less than Tubs.
While he may not be from a huge conference, but you gotta start somewhere.
I guess I don't understand this "The sky is falling stuff."
Somebody should tell that Amy skank she should be glad she hasn't been scraping by on a drivers' ed. teacher's salary the last five years.
Add her husband's name to the list of worthless "coaches" who've been living on borrowed time.
Hey, Amy: Your husband is lucky he hasn't been arrested for larceny every time he cashed his paycheck.
I'll bet you can work a grocery store scanner, and Steve can be hell on wheels as a bag boy. You've been on the sugar teat for way too long, girly.
YOUR HUSBAND'S BEEN TEACHING TOMMY FREAKING TROTT HOW NOT TO CATCH FOOTBALLS FOR THREE YEARS!! Count yourself lucky you're not digging trhough garbage bins for a meal!!
Jeez. Try for a little dignity.
What am I missing?
New post up.
it will not take weeks. I think days perhaps.
recruiting will be fine and dandy. Feb. is farther away than you think.
Wow... Just wow. Didn't we used to have a creed?
J. Kev., man, you're walking a thin line there.
They just lost their jobs.
Gosh.
Hey guys, the buyout money was there right before the Ole Miss game. PTB have been waiting for this chance. They are after Muschamp and have been since then Ole Miss game. Don't count him out. I'm not saying I want him, but plenty of the people that ponied up the money want him.
Is Saban out of the question?
This year for Leach is the equivalent of the 04 season for Tuberville and Leach is third in his own conference.
i want a fire jay jacobs shirt to wear to wild wings saturday for the seccg. can we get that done
jkev post should be removed; he/she wasn't walking a thin line but crossed it.
really jkev, relax.
Jkev ... we're glad you are here, and your opinion is valued and entertaining, but ease up just a tad - we are generally pretty civil around here.
Thanks,
Your Phriend Phred
Thank you for saying that, Phred.
How about nobody calling anyone names like "skank". Come on.
Phred is a skank.
I withdraw the "skank" part.
Nothing else.
Ensminger is a poor coach, and his wife sounds like a real idiot... Translation of Amy Ensminger: "Those evil power brokers! They should've kept my husband, one of the worst assistant coaches at any BCS cronies, and all of the other cronies, for as long as they wanted to keep driving this program into the ground. How dare they fire a group of men who are clearly capable of producing at least 4 losses 70% of the time?"
patdyeswildturkey said...
Jay Jacobs = Idiot...

congrats Jay
Okay, Turkey. So Jay Jacobs is an idiot for firing the football coach when the football team "sucks". I am sorry for calling someone out, but you need to think about what a silly statement you make here, buddy.
The "skank" comment was pretty classless.
Sorry, had to take a shot at that. That's just uncalled for. Those are good people that aren't paid millions that lost their jobs.
It's business it happens. But it's not appropriate to insult them like that. I said upstairs she should take that up with the former head coach. He was not blind in this.
These guys will get work. But this isn't a happy day for them.
I'd also like to say this certainly isn't a "the sky's falling " day. I don't understand that thought process. How can anyone say this is a bonehead move? What do you compare it to when you say that?
Tennessee Tiger, I like the cut of your jib. You have several good points.
Know what we owed Tuberville? A paycheck and a job description. Know what we owe him now? (Counting the 6 mil?) D*ck.
Strange Overtones: I find your overtones, well, strange.
Cats were so overpaid it's gross. Amy Ensminger needs to take a powder. She should've been on a drivers ed wage for the last four years. Gross.
So J Kev is out of line for being hard on a coaches wife who went off on a no-class tirade. I think those of you saying really horrible nasty things about Jay Jacobs need to figure out whether you are the pot or the kettle, eh?
I heard the phone call Jay mentions and it was definitely sad to hear.
But, she also went on to say that Saban owns the state and in so many words said we'd only be able to compete with him if we "went back to the $100 hand shakes like they have done in the past."
So, she lost me at that point. If the staff shared her feelings that we can't compete with Saban and others in this league without cheating, then they don't need to be at Auburn.
