Monday evening update

Here is what I know:

Tommy Tuberville and athletic director Jay Jacobs went their separate ways Monday night without discussing the football situation. They didn't meet Monday afternoon.

It's unclear if Jacobs and university president Jay Gogue met at some point.

Regardless, no decisions have been made.

Looks like I'll be back here at the Athletic Complex tomorrow morning for another round.

Re-worded slightly again:

Many people speculated that Auburn had made up its mind days before the Iron Bowl that Tuberville would be retained.

The fact that nothing (conclusive) happened today makes me think Auburn is considering its options. That doesn't surprise me. This team was terrible.

Still, the people who insisted this was an open-and-shut case are wrong wrong wrong.

Another thing, I like Kodi. Pulled for him harder than anyone, but I can't sit here and say he is going to be a great QB. He will never be a great QB. It doesn't matter how talented he is. He doesn't have the killer instinct. And I think that is what the coaches have been trying to tell us. That instinct ... you have to have it. JPW has it. Kodi doesn't. He's just not a winner, and that is sad, because I think he is a first rate human being.

5:46 PM
Blogger Kris said...

I agree with you Jay on the twisting in the wind. Not only did he and the other members of the Lee County/Arkansas Hunting Club leave the admin wondering if they were just gonna stay put in the Natural State, he left us and more importantly potential recruits in the same state of uncertainty. Meanwhile, Saban (now capitalized as a result of the beatdown) was in households laying the foundation for the signing day bloodbath that would come. If they are wondering about a turnaround next year, I predict a season very similar to Tennessee's this year....regardless of who is coaching. There are simply no offensive playmakers on this team and so far, the ones we have committed have done so over offers from schools also not playing in bowls (for the most part). By the way, John Gruden aint leaving a successful NFL gig to come head up this mess.

5:46 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

sorry Barkey, Butch Davis is a much better fit than Kelly.

Ties to FL, NFL street cred and a name to compete with Saban.

I'm with you Convington. Is this for real? CTT deserves another year..all the good things don't seem that good after a 5-7 year and all the bad things are magnified 10 fold with a 5-7 year. He has run a good program. Has he accomplished what I want for AU?..well not exactly. I want championships but I really think CTT can do it.I want to give him one more year to right the ship and make us relevant again. So I'm gonna start the chant..ONE MORE YEAR! ONE MORE YEAR!

I'll be honest and I'll only say this to AU people but I have my doubts about Tub's ability to win a championship based on his entire record.

Also, his NFL stint was more sucessful than Little Nick's.

5:51 PM
Blogger Kris said...

Folks, I hate to break it to you, but given the quality of the coach on the other side of the state and the rate at which he has turned that program around, our beloved AU aimply is not gonna get a first rate proven guy to leave a good gig and come compete with that. If they run Tubbs, prpepare now to be disappointed with the Lane Kiffin type of hire, which may not be all bad.

5:51 PM
Blogger wartiger said...

If AU ever gets that first national championship, I don't think we would ever look back. It's just a matter of getting that one and that task has been proven pretty difficult. Unless of course your name is Saban and you do it in two years..but I hate Saban so he doesn't count

wartiger, I believe CTT should stay assuming he says the right things to the Jays. If he blames the season on others or injuries, I would kick him out on his arse. If he accepts responsibility and comes up with a reasonable plan to fix the situation, I would give him another year. That being said, my criteria for him staying after next season would be at least 8 wins and possibly 9.

I can see the difficulty that Franklin faced. Todd wasn't great, but he could make good decisions and manage to get the ball where it needed to be, but he wasn't a threat to make a game breaking play passing or running.

Then you have Kodi who has the ability to make big plays running or passing, but doesn't know the offense well enough to get the consistency to maintain long drives.

It is a very difficult situation to be in.

6:30 PM
Blogger Romberry said...

A couple of things...

First, wasn't Tuberville supposedly heading out to recruit and therefore unavailable to meet with JJ or Gogue prior to Tuesday? Do I take it that he is not actually on the road but is in Auburn/on campus? If that is in fact the case, then yeah, the percentages on his departure are up in a big way. (GOOD!)

Second, I'd like to see people stop writing off Kodi Burns. After the young man gets some actual coaching is the time to evaluate his potential, not before. Those writing him off under this staff ought recall the way a great many AU fans wrote off Ben Leard after 1998.

Kodi Burns may or may not ever be a good/great SEC starting QB, but unless and until he gets a chance to work with a coach that can bring along a QB, deciding that he is a bust is simply not smart.

6:30 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

wartiger, sorry if I sound like a bammer, but this is my wiew: if AU makes the change, we take some sure-fire growing pains starting over with a new coach. But there is a chance 2 years from now the program could be in the upper tier conference teams again. Not saying that will happen, but it could. If CTT is kept I see no way that happens, and things could get even worse. He says the team has no playmakers, but has preached for several years recruiting is better than ever, and the program is in better shape than ever. Do you see anything from the last 2 seasons to make you believe either of those statements? Making a change is risky, but I still say not making one is even more risky.

Mark - Regarding the block. Its a minor point with the AU world melting down around us, but I'd still like to talk about it; hopefully somebody on here really knows the rule - most people don't, and I'm not sure that I do.

There is a zone within which both clipping and blocking below the waist is legal. It is different at every level, and I don't know the rule on the college level, and they change it all the time too. I think the zone is 8 yards by 6 yards, and if it is, then it appears the bama player is within the zone. He could have been blocked from behind, and he could have been blocked below the waist, but I'm not sure that it could be both. In other words, I'm not sure that you can clip below the waist even in the zone. Does anybody really know, and I mean KNOW on the NCAA level?

I don't think you can clip below the waist even in the zone according to current rules. If that's correct, it should have been a 15 yd penalty.

Whatever it was, it was a lousy block that didn't even get the bama guy down. He would have been much more effective to hit him high and he could have easily knocked him down. I doubt there was any intent to hurt anybody; just poor technique, and very consistent with the rest of our play in the game.

Getting no endorsement today doesn't look good for Tubs.

I fear the decade-long death spiral that Mr. S mentioned weeks ago.

If 9 or 10 wins is the criteria, better run him now. Where are the playmakers folks? It took Borges to figure out that you could do better if Caddy and Ronnie were in the backfield together, but those guys made plays before their senior year. Are our wideouts suddenly going to figure out how to get open and then blow the defenders doors off en route to the endzone? Delusionality breeds dissapointment and I for one have had plenty of that this year. Not trying to be a total killjoy, just realistic.

How about deciding the HC position with a more rational approach. Have Tuberville and Franklin wrestle for it in a wring at the center of Jordan Hare. We can pack the stands and add some seating on the field. I bet we could get over 100,000 spectators at $60/ticket and pay off the buyout. By the way, it shouldn't be a singled fall match. First man to, say,.... 36 pins wins.

First, Tub said we don't have play makers.

Second, yes. He said recruiting is going great.

But guys, you must understand.....Auburn can only get a certain "type" recruit. Which means he's a 3 star guy or a guy no one else offered.

That being said, we shouldn't even fool with the other players. They're not Tub's "TYPE".

It would be against beat writer code of conduct for Jay to "come out of the closet" (so to spreak) as an Auburn fan mdaniel.

I can't believe you just used Ben Leard as your example of what a QB can be if he works hard enough.

Leard pulled Tuberville's fat out of the fire against Appy State in Tuberville's first game at AU and went on to have a hecukva season in 1999 and again in 2000 (at least when he wasn't hurt.) I can't believe you're dissing Ben Leard.

LOL at the link Mr. Sensible - But he's not available right now; too busy feuding with Mr. Sulu over not being invited to his gay wedding.

Guess nobody currently around knows the rule on the free blocking zone. I doubt that many outside of line coaches and officials really know it, but there are all sort of folks ready to accuse AU of a chop block, even though they have no idea of what a chop block is.

I'll wake you up in time Jay and yes I do know where you live. No joke. If you doubt it then agree or disagree that the street initials are WP.
