Moving into Sunday

Hey everyone. The search is over. The first order of business is to thank the HOTTIES for making this the most exciting time in HABOTN history. I never in my life thought we'd have 10,000 pageviews in a day here.

We went way beyond that several times during the search. Thanks for your support.

HOTTIES > everyone else on Earth.

Enough of that. Let's get to business.

********************
Gene Chizik is the Auburn coach and that's that. As a casual glance through our comments section will show, opinions are pretty split about this hire.

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of this hire as I see them.

ON THE PLUS SIDE:
  • He has Auburn ties (SEC ties by default) and was an important part of the 2004 team that went 13-0.

  • He won a national title at Texas in 2005.

  • Defensive-minded guys always are welcomed at Auburn.

  • He's a disciplinarian.

  • He's passionate.
ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE:
  • He went 5-19 as head coach at Iowa State.

  • He probably was one poor year away from being fired there. The popular web site Coaches' Hot Seat listed Chizik as the nation's third most in-jeopardy coach. He was not a hot property.

  • He has no offensive identity.

  • Auburn will take a public-relations hit for turning down Turner Gill, a relatively successful black head coach, to hire a relatively unsuccessful white head coach.

INTERESTING READ: Matt Hayes of Sporting News, a guy whose work I respect, writes this morning that Auburn hired Chizik because of The Lowder Influence.

PLANE CRAZY: Chizik is due back in Auburn later today for a meeting with players. Auburn's newest jet left AUO early this morning and currently is stationed in Ames, Iowa.

UPDATE: Flight is due to arrive at AUO at 5:10 p.m.

Opinions are "split?"

I don't think they are "split." They approach unanimity as much as any hire possibly could when you throw out the "if Auburn hires a yellow dog, I'll still say it's great" posts.

Tim, I respectfully disagree.

There actually are two factions of people who support this decision.

a.) The people who like Chizik

b.) The people who have decided to stand behind Chizik because he's the Auburn coach

I'm still floored by this hire.

With that said, let me bring a moment of levity to HABOTN...

Apparently the visitor's lockerroom at UA is going to be named "The Fail Room"...

Fail Room

LMAO!

Jay I get what you are saying. But can you think of another recent SEC hire that has gotten this much negative feedback? And I do NOT think AU fans are partcularly negative so I think that Chizik is getting more "benefit of the doubt" than a lot of coaches would get.

I cannot remember a hire this controversial. I, too, am very surprised by what has gone down.

Can't wait to see how Jay Jacobs rationalizes Chizik's 5-19 record at Iowa State.

I hate to bring a negative subject from the previous board, but feel it is needed. I read at the end where racism was brought up. THis is my repost..addressed with all respect to Monica.

Mon...I don't think that it was racism. It was PTB ego. I think that the PTB hired someone that they can control. This article in the Sporting News nails it for me. The article suggests that no one else(including Gill)would accept.

I just think we were led to believe that there was a big-time hire coming and though Chizik was a terrific assistant, there is some degree (maybe a LARGE degree) of letdown here.

When you are pushing the idea of a Spurrier or Muscahamp and you don't deliver there will be questions. That said, Chizik COULD be a fine coach. But AU looks very unlikely to "win the press conference" on this one.

11:05 AM
Blogger astatguy said...

The test will be early. He's being sold as a coach with potential who had little to work with at ISU. If he can hang on to our committed players and we don't have a large drop out I'll feel better. My gut says there'll be a rush to the door. If he can convince some 4 and 5 star recruits to join our class I'll become a fan.

Blogger ron mexico said...

I think chizik should put together a rather strong defense next year. He will have a better corner tandem in powers and McFadden than he ever did in his years at auburn.

The O.C. will be a crucial hire and maybe since we got a head coach at a discount we can throw a few bucks at the next O.C. We can not afford to screw up this hire, or it's game over for quite a while.

11:07 AM
Blogger astatguy said...

Chizik isn't that different from Muschamp, except for the losing seasons as head coach. Muschamp is an unknown quantity as head coach. I actually liked Chizik's defenses better. Muschamp's defenses often self-destruct at the end of games. LSU and Georgia here are good examples, along with TTech this year at Texas.

Recruits gravitate to teams that have a loved coach. That bimbo kissing CN$ upon airport arrival may have done more for Bama recruiting than we realize.

We must get behind CGC. It's not easy for me b/c of the very issue I posted above. That's my problem. Not getting behind CGC will just cause more harm.

This coach has some definite strengths. We need a good support sysem to be built around him.

I am disappointed with the 5-19 (2-10 last year) hire to replace a 5-7 coach, but if he recruits well and wins, almost al the AU supporters will jump back on the bandwagon. Winning makes everyone happy.

I had really hoped the SACS debacle had neutered BL. If the SN article is halfway correct, then the state of affairs in Auburn are beyond pathetic.

Let's all remember, once upon a time BL went up against a GOVERNOR and won.

Something tells me when 2011 rolls around, BL is just one more large campaign contribution from another 12 year term.

we as Auburn people take great pride in being and treating others as 'family'. for those who go against the betterment of Auburn and have their own agenda, i mean, that's what i just don't get. and for more qualified coaches to scoff at the idea of coming to Auburn because of the way 'things are'......is beyond sad and frustrating for me as an Auburn man.

I've had nearly 24 hours to get over my disappointment. I thought Auburn should have hired Gill (or someone who has seen some success as HC), but it's clear that the power structure at Auburn is a major negative for a lot of prospective candidates.

I liked Chizik as a coordinator (loved his defenses). Iowa State is a terrible program, and I have somewhat bought into the theory that he just didn't have time to turn it around there. And now it's time to stand behind him as Auburn's HC. I look forward to hearing who his assistants will be.

War Eagle.

Lets hope that someone makes a substitution when the plane arrives. Get rid of Billy Joe Bob the loud mouth drunk. I am sure Billy Joe Bob clips will have already surfaced from when Jacobs returned, but it would be event more detrimental if Billy Joe Bob put on his redneck hillbilly act when Coach Chiz arrived.

12:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I would also like to hope that the people bashing Jacobs would lay off. I say this for several reasons. First, I think he chose as about as good a candidate as we had on the list Jay G put together.

Also, I don't know how well any of us would handle Jacob's job with the hand of the BOT shoved so far up into our anal cavity.

And do not forget Pat Dye. He likely had a lot to do with making the happen. You might refer to him as Patrick "Q" Dye for a while.

12:38 PM
Blogger scottatl said...

Jay,

One question that has not been answered is this:

How many people were offered the job before CGC accepted, and turned it down?

It had to be a few because we obviously could have had him the day after Tubs left.....i mean its not like anyone else was going after him

12:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And for those of you who were against Paul Johnson, he was by far the highest profile coach that seemed to be in consideration and might be receptive. Mike Leach would be the only other one that came close.

Nobody on Jay's list came close to those two, and the article linked to Jay's blog explains why. It also explains why getting rid of Tuberville was such a bonehead move.

As for Gil, his best season as a head coach he wins one less that CTT did on average. Didn't he have one winning season as a head coach and no ties to Auburn?

12:42 PM
Blogger dnatl said...

It's also not like Chizik was busy with bowl preparations either...

12:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

scottatl, that is a very good question. I think the article linked to this blog gives you some idea. Successful coaches view Auburn has a tough gig. They wouldn't mind it being tough in terms of opponents. It is just a bad environment to work in. I reference Billy Joe Bob at the airport as exhibit A.

12:44 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

People also tend to refer to me as upbeat. I don't think of myself as such. I think I try to act in the best interest of Auburn and react to facts rather than speculation. How good of hire coach Chiz turns out to be is yet to be seen.

Speculate if you like about Gil or Muschamp, but that is non-productive. Making racial accusations should help a lot.

The best thing for Auburn is to give Chizik at least 5 years to show what he can do. A big name hire would likely get less time, but when you go for the young up an comer that doesn't have the experience of a Dye, Bowden, or Tuberville, you have to give them time.

12:52 PM
Blogger Kris said...

If we couldn't get anyone but Chizik to be HC, what makes anyone think we are going to be able to attract a big name OC? I said it yesterday, but at this point I would not be suprised to see Borges back on the sidelines.

AU has been very good the last 26 years picking an AU football coach. Even Bowden brought us an undefeated season.

the only ? I have is Chizik, had NO success at Iowa St. Even Dye at East Carolina, Wyoming and CTT had quick turnarounds at the schools they coached. Gill had success at Buffalo.

I just don't know (and why I question this hire) how CGC showed he can HC a winning successful program on the scale of AU.

plese give me ur insight....

eaglesteeler, even Gill had only very limited success. None of the candidates on Jay's list had the success of Dye, Bowden, or Tuberville prior to coming to Auburn.

He makes it hard to coach at auburn, him and a couple other little old lady types that are meddlesome good ole boys with nothing more to do than say " look at me and what my wallet can do". JJ getting bashed is in direct correlation to his willingness to be a mere symptom of a much worse overall disease.

John Stubbs, Chizik is the head coach, so it is pointless to argue whether he should be the choice. I can argue why Chizik is the best choice or why Gil is the best choice, or why Muschamp would be the best choice, but it is pointless. All of them are the wildcard type of hire.

What will be interesting is the staff he assembles.

1:05 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

BinOBA, whether you like it or even believe it, Lowder and Jacobs are trying to do what is in the best interest of Auburn. You can also throw coach Pat Dye into that list. He is a close friend of Lowder's. Bashing Lowder and Jacobs do not help Auburn.

1:26 PM

Jay, simple 2 part yes or no question. Do you think muschamp was offered the HC job, and do you think he originally said yes until FIX10 in Mobile leaked it? As for GC, as i said last night, I will support the guy, until he proves I should not. I did this for CTT, until this year, when our team did not improve from game to game, like any team should, including peewees, and CTT showed very little emotion in the IB, indicating to me he kinda knew what was coming. Iowa St. is a horrible place to visit/play, trust me, I've been there, so I can easily see why recruits would not be revved up to go to Ames. His southern ties, Clemson, Central Fl., AU, HC coach in FL. should help in 'crutin.

Like most of you after learning of this hire, I jumped off the imaginary top of the highest building around. Somewhere between the ledge and the ground, I found a reason to pull the cord and deploy the parachute. That reason is simple: For better or worse, I am an Auburn Tiger. It runs through my veins, an inextricable part of my very being. It is something that cannot be taken away by meglomaniacal trustees, crappy football teams, the national media, incompetent atheletic directors nor jeers from other fans (most of whom have absolutely nothing of themselves invested in their school). Regardless of his record, Coach Chizik wanted to take this job because he believes in Auburn and believes Auburn can help him do what Iowa State could not-win. For all of his apparent lack of basic walking around sense, Jay Jacobs was willing to gamble his career on Chizik being right. As such, I will stand behind Coach Chizik and do everything I can to help him help Auburn. After all, that is what families do.

Do you favor a spread offense: NOT totally ala TT, but a mix such as Okla.

That's why i think we need an OC that is versatile in that area and WILL recruit QBs, WRs, and RBs...

eaglesteeler, you have a very good point about recruiting. More specifically, mistakes were made in terms or recruiting receivers and the choices made of who to redshirt. We graduated a crap load of good receivers in 2004 and 2005. We had little left after that. We have good receiver talent now, but it hasn't been developed very well.

I am not as focused on what offense we run as I am on how well we coach the players. This last season our team looked unprepared on offense. That was true to some degree the previous couple of years too.

My question with Borges isn't if his offense will work or even if he is very knowledgeable. My question is how good of a teacher is he? Part of the issue may have been with Greg Knox, but I saw comments from receivers suggesting they didn't understand what Borges was wanting to see.

I don't believe Borges would be a bad hire, but we do need to make sure recruiting is covered.

He has done nothing to prove he has a clue how to be an effective HC. If his SEC ties is the thing that gave him a leg up then we are about to see how much more important that is than hiring one of several candidate that actually were successful HCs. I just dont see how blindly supporting every dumb decision our administrators make is helpful to our university. It seems that this is contributing to the preception problem that we have. AUBigCat, why would you judge him before he has even set foot on campus, made a hire, or coached a game at Auburn?

Why would you judge his ability as a head coach after a short stint of coaching some else's players?

Why do you feel that this pre-judging of the head coach we will have for the next 4 or 5 years is beneficial?

WR recruiting and development is the single largest problem with our offense(s). Regardless of the OC or "system", the defense's ability to crowd the line, stuff the run/short passes and still cover our WRs deep has thwarted all playcalling.

Go watch the films...game after game and watch it happen.

See if this sounds familiar for the past 3 years....We start each game and score some, then get stuffed in the middle quarters of the game. Some games we were able to score against nickel and dime packages(especially BCox) at the end of the game.

Chizzle is gonna have to stop that trend. Recruit, transfer, develop receivers that know fundamentals and can get seperation.

BTW, Steve you should be happy to notice from my new avatar(courtesy of Mr.S) that I am on the Chizzle Train.

Steve you know it's not pre-judging when a person has a recod/history. He made ISU worse. He hired his buddies and the admin there made him fire them. These are all questions that I have today and probally will have for many days to come. I feel like I am leonardo watching my ship sink. Au had an oppurtunity to make a statement and boy it sure did. Besides that he draws breath? Okay, I'll play.

1. He's an incompetent fool, way out of his depth for the job. His two qualifications for being hired were apparently raising money and being a stooge for Lowder.

2. He ran off the best swimming coach in the country.

3. The football, basketball and baseball programs have either stagnated or regressed under his leadership.

4. I think he's a bald-faced liar. And I think he was flat out lying when he said that he and Tommy prayed together. If I'm right about that, he's a blasphemer.

5. I thought Tuberville needed to go, but to have no plan in place for a replacement is unfathomable. And consider this: if the best we can do is a 5-19 coach who's lost 10 games in a row (and under whom the ISU program has regressed), what does it say about Auburn's reputation? What does it say about the state of the Athletic Department (and BoT) and the guy who heads it?

That about covers it just now.

He has never lost to Alabama. As important as Petrino was in beating Alabama in 2002, Chizik was equally as important. Chizik has won a national championship. Going to Ames was a bad decision on his part. His positives outweigh his negative. So call me neutral about liking or disliking him. He is an disciplinarian, I like that alot.

When a HC comes in to jump start a program or take it to a new level you expect it to show in upset wins or an improved record.

at IA St Chizik's predecessor won 5 out of 7 seasons. Chizik's record the next 2: 5-19. He lost to Kent St and other weak teams. Why did he not MAINTAIN the prior level or improve on it?

barkley, the fans are a big part of the impression of the Auburn program that is described in the article linked to this blog.

I have not seen anyone list anything that he did that bothered them. This simplistic way of evaluating a coach based purely on the number of wins he had in a couple of season with players someone else recruited is just plain ridiculous.

Also, to suggest than fan support has nothing to do with the success of the program is equally ridiculous.

Will it work out? I have no idea.

My guess is that Chizik is a lot better coach than 5-19, but the problem -- always the problem -- is the perception.

I concede a portion of the argument of Boom vs. Chizik stats, but that perception thing is what makes the difference.

If we were to introduce Boom tomorrow, and you would have heard nothing but what a sharp, young coach who'll do great things.

With Chizzle, it will be nothing but doubt.

3:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

eaglesteeler, Kent State beat Buffalo, so Gil is apparently not so good either.

Has this program improved? Certainly not. We took a huge step backward when Franklin was hired. We took an even huger step backward whe he was fired in the middle of the season. We totally lost it when we trashed and fired Tuberville, a coach that was viewed as very successful.

The mistake wasn't the hiring of Chizik. The list of candidates weren't impressive and they weren't impressive for a reason. I didn't see much difference between any of them. They are all unproven.

3:18 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

"Also, to suggest than fan support has nothing to do with the success of the program is equally ridiculous."

I never said that, Steve. I said it is not the fans jobs to improve the program, people get paid to do that. Fans obviously have an impact on the program, but they don't have a responsibility to support whoever is hired.

What do I not like about Chizzle? Well I've said several times I wanted us to make a splash or make an improvement. Chizzle does neither. I realize you will probably say it's not about what I want, and I realize that, but this is MY opinion.

This simplistic way of evaluating a coach based purely on the number of wins he had in a couple of season with players someone else recruited is just plain ridiculous.

That sort of jibes with the comment you made the night of the Iron Bowl, in essence that it's "ignorant" to judge a coach's success based on wins and losses.

But back to Chiz at ISU: since a W-L evaluation is "simplistic," what factors should we use to evaluate him?

As a follow-up, what about his track record as a head coach makes you think he was the best candidate for this job?

I'll hang up and listen.

Auburn fans are choosing to add to the doubt rather than judge the coach based upon what he actually does. To use the simplistic method of choosing a coach only based upon a team he coached for a couple of years doesn't make much sense. Judge him by what decisions he makes for Auburn.

I am unaware of the plans that were presented by the coaching candidates. Those plans are what was used to determine who to hire. Without some knowledge of those plans, I cannot begin to evaluate Chizik.

I am not saying he will be great or bad. I am saying there is too little information to judge at the moment.

I do know that being negative brings negative results.

Chris,

Don't let one comment by a relative new comer make you rethink your association with the HABTON.

1998- 3 wins 8 losses
1999- 4 wins 7 losses
2000- 9 wins 3 losses. won the Insight.com bowl
2001- 7 wins, 5 losses, lost to bammer in shreveport
2002-7 wins 7 losses, lost the humanitarian bowl.
2003-2 wins 9 losses
2004-7 wins 5 losses won the independance bowl
2005-7 wins 5 losses, lost the houston bowl
2006-4 wins 8 losses.

Please someone tell me how Chizik ran this train wreck of a program into the ground. AUBIGCAT, your one of my favorites out there, but your facts on the ISU program do not appear to be correct. It was not a 7 win program before CHizik got there. It was a below .500 program. It pretty much has always been that. ISU's best record in 10 years was 9-3 other than that, a few 7 wins and alot of losing years. If I recall correctly 9-3 by CTT was considered mediocre. 9-3 by ISU is Awesome. If anyone says ISU was ok before Chizik got there, well, go check it for yourself.

eagle-- concerning your question about the quality players he brought in, again I refer to the fact it is IOWA. First, if there are any decent players in the area, they almost always go to Iowa, not Iowa St. Secondly, there are still many, many high schools in that region who still play 8 man football, yes 8 vs. 8, so there are not many good players. Most are farm boys who know after they graduate they will help out on the family farm. I am not being mean or trying to be funny, I lived in Iowa for 6 years. People may ask, why not get players from TX, FL, and other places? I don't have the figures, but I imagine the Iowa State recruting budget covers maybe 3-4 nights at a Motel 6 and $20 per diem for the year. Obviously, it is more than that, but I would imagine AU can bring in much better recruits than ISU. Time will tell

J. Kev, I have never claimed he was the best candidate. I see positives in all the candidates. I also see negatives. None of the candidates that we interviewed have resumes that impress me as much as that of the coach that MSU hired.

I cannot begin to judge the candidates because I was not in the interviews and I do not know the plan they have for Auburn. All we can really do is wait and see.

The thing is, we can begin to judge him on things he did control, such as selection of his staff at Iowa State. That is different than judging him by simply wins and losses with players he didn't select.

I do not care to investigate the decisions he made at Iowa State because I am more interested in seeing the decisions he makes for Auburn.

The first thing to judge will be his selection of a coaching staff at Auburn. Selection of the right staff is one of the biggest responsibilities of a head coach and makes and breaks careers.

Saban is a good example of this. Notice where his assistants from the national championship team at LSU are now. Also notice his decision to send Applewhite on his way. He makes good decisions in terms of his staff.

Impressions are also very important. To trash the coach will provide negative effects on Auburn recruiting. Do you not think recruites investigate schools? Do you not think recruits visit message boards? Notice the exposure HABOTN gets. People will look and make decisions based upon that atmosphere, whether the atmosphere is based upon facts or the poor behavior of fans.

Whether Chizik was the best choice isn't the point. Doing what is best for Auburn is.

Dang I go away for the weekend and come back to this. Well while I am disappointed with the hire this guy actually is a better defense mind than Muschamp. Chizik has proved he can be a key peice to a championship team more than once. While I may not be thrilled with the hire I am going to support this Coach and Team regardless of the situation. I can see being down on Jacobs, but to donw Chizik is wrong. The success of his time at Auburn will be built around the staff he puts into place. I am thinking we will be very solid on D. What type of O he decides to run will be key. Has anybody picked up Chuck Long yet?

I am curious if when T. Gill was interviewed and he was asked what he would do down the road if Nebraska came calling. I would imagine he might have stuttered on that one a bit.

My choice would have been Paul Johnson. No telling what he would have done had he been seriously courted. Probably not come here is my guess.

The most important question to everyone's answer (steve miller reference) is who will be the OC. We lost our offensive identity pure and simple when we hired the hobo from T-roy. We need to get that back. I want to get back to pounding people into submission and imposing our will on them offensively. That is Auburn football. I want two back sets, I love double tight ends, and a quarterback who can make clutch throws (ala Brandon against GA and Jason against LSU.). That's it.

3:36 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

McLovin, those are my thoughts exactly. We can try to get some idea of how good Chizik will be by looking at Iowa State, but it is hard to tell. How much money did he have to spend on assistants? How many assistants are eager to head to Iowa State? There are just too many factors to consider there. Lets just judge based upon what he does at Auburn where the resources are completely different.

chicklet, anyone? chizaam? cheezit? i'm one of the group that's behind him because he is who we have, if you're curious.

JKev.....Those threats against JJ are way out of line. If you knew the stories I know, you would probably go postal. These problems have been here for years and are the source of all kinds bizarre situations (duck hunts). JJ is only a puppet. JGouge doesn't have the guts.

The irony is: These folks think they are actually doing what is right for AU.

I didn't want CTT gone and once that was done, I wanted Gill or Johnson, but it is time to move on. Our dirty laundry is spread all over the lawn again and we ALL need to go help pick it up instead of arguing about who failed to wash and dry.

Denny - That's a bit of an overstatement. And does that invalidate the quote I just offered?

Mon, the answer to "how do you do get rid of"......has been asked for many years.

Big Cat,

Its always interesting to use the same stats to make different views.

IA St before Chizik DID have 7 win seasons (02, 04, 05) Chizik in 2 years couldnt' win even half that many.

It not comparing AU to IA, but would it not have helped AU fans view that we saw IMPROVEMENT on the field when he coached?

And remember too, after 2 years he removed his 2 coordinators and others from his staff that HE brought in. True?

The declarative statement that "These folks think they are actually doing what is right for AU." is assumptive beyond logic. Especially considering egocentric decision makers.

Denny - ISU had a QB named Seneca Wallace for mych of those sucessful, umm, year.

Without talent, you lose.

If CGC comes in and gets a guy like Atchison or the big DE from Indiana to recommit will we be impressed?

I just have a feeling he's not going to get out worked in the living room department which is EXACTLY why Tuberville left (and voted to limit recruiting.)

Until one of us, hopefully me, its the Lotto for about 170 million, then all of the bitchin' and whinin' isn't worth more than a tinker's damn. Hoopie is correct. These things have always been same. Jkev, if you think Jay Jacobs is the one responsible for this, then you are the one that is incompetent. Lapdog, sycophant, well, sure, he probably is. But in total control of this, not likely.

Hoopie is right about the ironic part about the PTB. They really do think that they are doing what is in the best interest of Auburn. They really do. Unfortunately, they seem woefully out of touch to me.

My advice is to do like me, fix a big ol pitcher of Orange kool-aid and have some Jeno's pizza rolls. I like the combination ones the best.

Mon-
I'm having palpitations.

* * *

The plane is still on the ground in Ames. Dang it, if he's gonna be our coach he needs to get his butt down here. Not that I'm impatient or anything. The Zoo Keeper's lips are going to be all chapped by the time he gets here.

Taking the 5 yr old to see Santa at Brookwood Village in a moment.

But, there's a "Speak With Santa" thingy going on in my neighborhood from 6-8. How do I explain that one?

Anyone in B'ham that can make it out to 280, bring the chillins.

Monnie, did you speak with your sis about Elf on a Shelf?
