The Official Statement from Auburn

Gene Chizik, a former Auburn defensive coordinator and current
head coach at Iowa State, has been named the head football coach at
Auburn University, Athletics Director Jay Jacobs announced Saturday.

Chizik, who helped Auburn and Texas to consecutive undefeated seasons
in 2004 and 2005, will be formally introduced as Auburn’s 26th head
coach at a press conference Monday.

Chizik, a 23-year coaching veteran, was Auburn’s defensive
coordinator from 2002-04, where he helped guide the Tigers to a 13-0
season in 2004 while earning the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s
top assistant coach. He also served as the assistant head coach and
co-defensive coordinator at Texas from 2005-06 where he helped the
Longhorns to a perfect season and national championship in 2005.

“I’m extremely proud and excited to have Gene returning to Auburn
to take over as head football coach of this program,” Jacobs said.
“I know that we have found the right fit for Auburn. Gene’s body
of work during his 23 years in this profession is remarkable. He has a
strong knowledge of this athletics program, this university and the
community, and he knows how to be successful in the Southeastern
Conference. He is a high-energy coach that is an outstanding motivator
and demands a tough, physical style of football. I’m confident that
Gene can build upon the foundation that has been established and make
this a program that competes for championships on a consistent
basis.”

During his tenure at Auburn, Chizik’s 2004 defense led the nation in
scoring defense (11.3 ppg) and was fifth nationally in total defense,
allowing just 277.6 yards a contest. In three years at Auburn, Chizik
helped the Tigers to a 30-9 mark including an 18-6 Southeastern
Conference record. In 2003, Auburn’s defense was fifth nationally in
total defense.

In two seasons in Austin, the Longhorns were 22-3 with Chizik. At one
point, he was a part of 29 consecutive victories, which began in 2003 at
Auburn and ended in 2006 at Texas.

Chizik’s reputation as an outstanding teacher is evident by the fact
that he tutored a remarkable three consecutive Thorpe Award winners,
starting with Auburn’s Carlos Rogers in 2004, followed by Texas’
Michael Huff and Aaron Ross in 2005 and 2006.

“Through my travels in coaching over the last 23 years, there’s one
place that I’ve always wanted to return to and that is Auburn,”
Chizik said. “The tradition of the Auburn football program combined
with the passionate fans and their love for Auburn are second to none.
My family and I are Auburn through and through, and look forward to
being part of the Auburn family and community.”

“I am dedicated to working tirelessly to win championships,” Chizik
said. “We will not be outworked in any facet of the building process.
I’m excited to get on the recruiting trail, meeting with the current
players and reconnecting with past players. We want to develop young
men into champions not only on the playing field, but in the classroom
and in the community.”

During his two seasons at Iowa State, the 46-year old Chizik was in the
midst of a rebuilding process, directing the Cyclones to a 5-19 mark.
The Iowa State administration rewarded Chizik’s leadership and vision
for the program by offering him a two-year contract extension following
this season.

Chizik’s first win came against intrastate rival Iowa in 2007, making
him the first Cyclone coach since 1907 to beat the Hawkeyes in his
inaugural season. The 2007 season also included conference wins over
Kansas State and bowl-bound Colorado.

Prior to his arrival at Auburn, Chizik was the defensive coordinator
for four seasons (1998-01) at Central Florida, where he improved a unit
that was 81st nationally in total defense before his arrival to one that
was 16th in the country in 2001.

Chizik spent six seasons at Stephen F. Austin from 1992-97, overseeing
the linebackers (1992-94) and secondary (1995-97). While at Stephen F.
Austin, Chizik helped the Lumberjacks to back-to-back NCAA Division I-AA
playoffs, including a national semifinal appearance in 1995.

He began his coaching career as defensive coordinator (1986-88) at
Seminole High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., before becoming a graduate
assistant at Clemson for a pair of 10-win teams in 1988-89. Chizik’s
first full-time college coaching position came at Middle Tennessee
State, where he helped lead the Blue Raiders to NCAA Division I-AA
playoffs in both of his seasons (1990-91) and to a conference
championship in 1990.

Chizik earned his B.A. degree in education from Florida in 1985 and his
M.A. in guidance and counseling from Clemson in 1991. A Clearwater,
Fla., native, Chizik and his wife, Jonna, have identical twin daughters,
Landry Grace and Kennedy Danielle, and son, Cally.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT GENE CHIZIK
Carlos Rogers, Washington Redskins, Former Auburn All-American, 2004
Thorpe Award Winner

“This was the best decision Auburn could have made. Coach Chizik was
like a dad to me. From a player and student point of view he’s exactly
what Auburn needs in a head coach.”

Carnell Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Former Auburn All-American
Running Back

“Coach Chizik is a players’ coach. Even though he was on the
defensive side of the ball, he taught all of us the importance of hard
work. He’s the kind of coach recruits hope to get to play for, and I
think this is a great hire. I’m excited for Auburn.”

Dontarrious Thomas, Minnesota Vikings, Former Auburn linebacker
“Gene Chizik will make a great addition for Auburn. He knows the game
of football and knows how to motivate and relate to young athletes. He
knows how to motivate them to be successful not only on the field but in
the classroom and in the game of life. He will be a blessing for the
players and for Auburn University."

I have to agree with you, not about the impaired judgement, but about the important hires. I have said this once and I will say it again, the OC and related staff will be HUGE.

On a more positive note, I got my HABOTN shirt yesterday and it is hot.

I wonder how much say JENO will have on who the new staff will be. I wonder if that was one of the things that the new HC had to agree to, that is, who his staff is. Maybe Jeno was the only one to agree to letting the PTB pick part of his staff. I know that is speculation, but what the hey.

The only thing I know is that this hire has given me putrid, foul, and very explosive gas.

Denny, you don't think he should meet with his players before skipping town?

You don't expect him to organize to bring his family to Auburn?

This could very well be a better choice that Gill. Overall, Chizik seems to be a more proven coach, although I do think Gill has to get the recruiting edge. I do think Chizik is more likely to be willing to be a long term coach, which we need.

hip-hopanonymous, a lot of our candidates had absolutely no head coaching experience at all.

ron, Chizik's defense was very impressive, although he had a lot of talent to work with. His defenses didn't give up as many big plays as Muschamp's did. Muschamp didn't have as much talent though. Rhoads has the talent and eliminates big plays, but stopping the run needed work.

I think the comments from NFL players he coached will be hug in terms of recruiting.

I can't believe people are judging the guy before he has stepped on campus. Judge him by what he does. This is kind of ridiculous and very Bammeresque. The ignorant redneck at the airport really helped.

My only problem with this is our perception regionally/ nationally which WILL affect recruiting.

People were already on us for firing a coach who won 87 games (ignoring the mediocrity, but that's another story). We HAD TO hire someone who would be good for our image and be sort of a lightning rod for good pub, and hopefully even better coaching.

what did we do? Hire a guy who is 5-19 in two seasons, legitimize all those people in the media who said we wouldnt get anyone better, and hire a guy who gives them ample ammo to prove their point.

I dont dislike Chizik and hope he does well. Just expect to be the laughing stock of sports radio for the next several months. And watch recruits go elsewhere.

Jeno is my man and if I were ever to meet him, I would shake his hand, look him in the eye, and tell him, quite earnestly, that if there is anything I can do to help him or make Auburn better, he can count on me.

I will continue to make my donation to the GAF and buy my tickets. This is our program, and until I hit the lottery, I can't change the PTB.

Barfield was a High School coach -- like Gerry Faust.

Please try and look at what he's done as a college football coach.

yes, he lost at Iowa St -- He brought that program to its knees from middle of the pack Big 12 stauts.

Can he coach or not. I'm sorry. I guess I'm, in defend mode.

I KNOW I AM.

SFC,

He should meet with the players. At the money he has and the support that Auburn provides, he should have an administrative assistant take care of those details. He is married, surely she can organize a house, get movers in, and so forth. Takes 10 minutes to meet with players, takes another few minutes to pack a few things, and then you can be on a jet, enroute, calling recruits and coaches on the way. Get into the coaching complex, drop your stuff, get the admin assistant to buy stuff, you need that you didn;t bring from Iowa, get up, go to church, get to work.

Again, at the kind of money he is being paid, why not. I would.

I understand that some here have trouble with posts that run paragraphs (as opposed to single sentences) but I find that complex thoughts and observations require more than "This sucks!" or "I'm not sending my $4.75 yearly contribution to Auburn!" to express. So here goes...

First, despite the fact that JGT has said repeatedly that Tuberville was not fired, a great many appear not to get it. But understanding that fact is imperative if you are to begin to understand why Tuberville chose to resign and why coaches like Tuner Gill (hardly embraced with unanimity) and Gene Chizik have been considered and, in the case of Chizik, hired.

Tuberville, denials from many fans and even sports writers notwithstanding, was not a great recruiter, at least not past the class that gave us Carlo, Carnell, Ronnie and Jason. The talent cupboard at AU may not be bare, but it is hardly fully stocked. This is especially true on the offensive side of the ball. And that, as much as anything, is why Tuberville decided to get out now. He wanted to preserve his legacy. He wanted people to remember the good seasons. The reason he wanted them to remember is because he looked around the SEC at Bammer, Ole Miss, UGA and even Arkansas (which was pitiful this year but still managed to beat Tuberville's AU squad) and he knew he was behind. He knew that this season was not a fluke, that staying another year would have produced a similar result. AU under Tuberville, like it or not, had become a program in decline...even if most fans didn't know it.

A "proven" coach would have been expected to be a miracle worker. If he didn't come in and win BIG right away, fans (many of whom appear to know less than nothing) would have been up in arms. There would be no opportunity to rebuild -- and rebuilding is what we are facing -- without being saddled with enormous unmeetable expectations.

Coaches like Gill and Chizik have good pedidgrees but so far are basically unproven at this level. That is both a negative and a positive thing. It's negative because you can't be sure that they will be up to the job. It's positive because they are not saddled with high expectations.

Gene Chizik took a job at ISU that he probably should have passed on. I was shocked when he accepted that position and quite frankly expected him to fail. Two years isn't enough time in that program (which was also in decline) to make a judgment one way or the other. But Gene Chizik is a very good coach and AU, in decline or not, is not Iowa State.

Without the unrealistic expectations that would come with a "rock star" head coach, Chizik will have a year or two to right the ship without excess pressure from the administration regardless of what the fans say or do. In the end, I expect that he will do just fine. He's a better coach that Tommy Tuberville and I believe he is ready for the challenge.

Stallings had a losing season in his first year at Bama. By year three he had the Tide playing for the national championship. Chizik probably won't have AU in the BCSCG in year three, but he will certainly have us further along than a worn out Tommy Tuberville would.

If you are an AU fan, get behind the university and the choice that university has made for a new head coach. Tuberville is gone. We're on a new chapter now.

War Eagle!

hip-hopanonymous, it was a given that we couldn't hire anyone better. No big names were available and if they were, they certainly would head to Auburn where we fired one of our most successful coaches. It just wasn't going to happen.

We were already a laughing stock and the laughter just got louder when Saban chased Tuberville off in his second season.

As for those that support Gill, what did he say during his interview that said he had a plan for Auburn that you would support? What did he say when asked about his future plans and if he would entertain an offer from Nebraska if it came?

What did Chizik say in his interview that bothers Auburn fans so much? What was his plans for the coaching staff? Who is he planning on bringing in? Why do you disagree with his plan for Auburn?

Or do we believe that interviews aren't important and that we should decide our head coach based upon oppinion on message boards?

Pat,

That's been the same reaction from the 30 or so Auburn people that I have spoken with tonight, and that is the one thing about this hire that troubles me the most.

There is ZERO excitement from the fan base because of this. It appears that most of us are cringing or secretly crossing our fingers, praying that this thing works out. From a PR perspective, at least in the short term, JJ has laid an egg.

However, PR doesn't win ball games, good recruiting and coaching does. As a fan and supporter, I have to give CGC the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise.

P.S. - Roman, you make a good point about a worn out TT. CGC, if nothing else, should bring some fire and energy back into what appeared to be football program in desperate need of a lifeline.

The article written by Tony Barnhart that advised AU to come up with a completely different product instead of trying to beat CNS at his own game makes the most sense. It's too late for that. A Gill or Johnson hire was our chance for that.

tigerfan44, Chizik, like all of our candidates, is young and inexperienced. Think more long term. In four or five years hopefully we will contend in the west. Give it another 5 to possibly be on a national scale. It is the nature of hiring a young coach.

I don't want to compare us to UAT but I will in this case I feel that there is some legitimacy. In 199- UAT hired a coach by the name of Gene Stallings who many of the fans were not happy with because of a 27-45-1 as a collegate head coach (7 years at TX A&M) and a 23-34-1 record as a head coach in the NFL. He went on to a 62-25 (70-16-1 if the 1993 forfeits are disregarded) record as the Head Coach of the Tide including 4 births in the SECG and 1 NC. Just saying, let's give the guy a shot.

Hoopie, I have mentioned before that recovering from Tuberville being fired is a process that will take at least 4 years to recover from and possibly as much as 25 years.

Getting rid of Tuberville destroyed much of the national image we had developed. A one season blip turned into a long time scar for the program.

It could be healed in 4 or 5 years. Near term, we could be pretty competitive this coming season if we don't lose the recruits and players to the NFL. We also must secure a good coaching staff, which is actually more important thann who is the head coach. That is a lot of ifs.

scottatl, if told in November, I would have been absolutely shocked. The destruction caused by Tuberville being fired made a hire like this very likely. It was plain from the candidate list that this was the type of hire we were going for.

As for Iowa State, Chizik's record there is pretty much meaningless. He wasn't there long enough to bring in his own players and apparently Iowa State liked him. They game him a two year contract extension after this season. Apparently they didn't see the HC as being their issue. I am not sure why so many here seem to have better knowledge than his bosses at Iowa State.

JD,

I disagree with only one thing you say. The forfeits should be counted. Playing with an ineligible player is CHEATING. Therefore, it is a loss.

I just want to see the new staff, that's all. Not that I will be disappointed. I just want to see the staff so I can envision our wins next year. I don't see a 5-7 year. I think we will do better, I know the schedule doesn't favor us, but I think that if he comes in and brings some energy to the program, continues to pay attention to grades and kids going to class, keeps up the discipline, then we will be alright. I just don't want to see players that screw up NOT get punished like at some other schools. Jeno has got to maintain discipline while at the same time getting the kids to buy into what he is doing. I think the Defense is ready. Offense will be a huge rebuilding effort. The players will be looking at him hard to see what he is all about.

Another thing, I sure don't want to hear IS references from Jeno like we had Troy references from the hobo we hired as a OC. What worked at Troy, didn't work at Auburn, nothing worked at IS, so please don't mention how you did this or that. Texas references are ok, but please keep them to a minimum. Let's just all pretend like Auburn is your first real HC job and IS was some bad dream.
