Players meeting over
The Auburn players were summoned to the Athletic Complex at 6 p.m. for a briefing about Tuberville's situation. He attended the meeting. He instructed players to not reveal what was discussed. Auburn officials made all players off-limits after the meeting.
The meeting lasted approximately 10 minutes. As players streamed out, some bee-lined silently and others congregated outside to discuss the day's event.
It was an awkward situation.

Jay, do you think we will lose any existing players to transfers?
Also, do you think they will name a new head coach quickly? After bumbling the firing, I see bumbling the hiring also.
Hopefully Ben Tate will have some comments.
I doubt we will ever really know what was said in that 10 minutes.
Transfer decisions, I imagine, will come later.
I've said before -- and here I am again -- that Auburn won't fire a football coach without having his successor already lined up.
i hate it for the players. maybe a little bit for au, as well. come 3 years, he'll be sorely missed.
Jay, I'm sorry but no one was talking about AMY until she --- SHE got on the radio.
Its personal when you down my University.

Posted on the last thread but want to see what you think:
Hey guys, the buyout money was there right before the Ole Miss game. PTB have been waiting for this chance. They are after Muschamp and have been since then Ole Miss game. Don't count him out. I'm not saying I want him, but plenty of the people that ponied up the money want him.
Come next year he will be missed like Borges this year.
Jay got any percentages on the top names?
Very telling Jay G.
I just wonder if we will be waiting days or maybe a couple of weeks for the presser to announce the new coach...
Mrs. Dunn on the Auburn SportsX talking about how all the coaches found out - through 3rd parties.
She sounds ticked!
Chris, your university just made a laugh stock out of itself. Don't be surprised when the heat comes.
Oh and I hope the try and keep Yox.
James, why not Friday before the SECCG?
Should be an interesting time around the plains.
Jay G, your job just got more interesting.
Since we probably knew we were firing him on Monday, I wish they would have just done it and got it over with, however it's over and done. I wish Tub nothing but the best, he did well at Auburn.
I am really not surprised by the events of today. I have seen the "look in the eyes" of CTT during the last several games, I believe that the first time was when TF was fired. It is hard to look back at the last 7 games this season and not see the emotionless stature of CTT.
This was poorly handled, but would you expect anything different?
RK - I just noticed there was an APB out for you. Glad you saw it.
That would certainly steal some thunder from the SECCG!
My line of thinking is that if we hear within the next few days then more than likely it is someone from the college ranks.
If we have to wait a couple of weeks, then it might be someone from the NFL ranks - waiting for their regular season to die down.
I'm going with Friday before the game. I think, even still, there was some method to this madness.
You heard much talk on the airwaves about the game this weekend? Food for thought.
HOW?
Auburn fired its football coach.
Whoopie woo.
Its a business.
Now, correlate that with a woman who's married to a coach -- its wasn't Dunn's wife but Emsminger - calling a radio show to air dirty laundry.
A laughing stock? Not quite.
See who else fired its copac this year.
I want to thank CTT for the past 10 years and wish him well.
Yeah, I guess I was missed.
I found that strange, but ok.

Agree Fred...
Auburn will have a coach by EOD Friday.
Yeah -- I sure hope he can win 8 games a year like everybody's DARLING who was sent away today.
geez.
Courtney Taylor's Facebook status: "why in the hell did Auburn fire Coach Tub.. Bad choice."
Jay, you say Auburn will not fire Tubs without having his successor lined up and I believe you, but why would they hire a search firm?
Chris,
Dunn's wife just called in. That's two coaches' wives.
CTT will work for ESPN next season.
the next auburn coach will be gone in three years. It will the the guy after the guy before we get over this.
Any decent coach should be able to win 8 games at Auburn.
Just my thoughts.
Juxtapose Tommy Tuberville on Wikipedia and Mike Leach...very similar.
Recruiter: I just came here to let you know everthing is fine and we are looking forward to having you at Auburn.
Recruit: What about the rumors about Tuberville?
Recruiter: Everything is fine. Trust me. There is nothing to this stuff. Tuberville is one of the winningest coaches in school history. He will be around for a long time.
Recruit: Thanks coach. I feel much better now.
Recruiter: You are welcome.
Ring!!!!
Recruiter: Just a minute. I need to take this. Hello, yea, when did that happen. Oh really? Am I fired too. Well, when will I know.
Recruit: Coach, what is going on?
Recruiter: Forget everything I have told you.
what did dunn's wife say?
I think even a same level coach as Tub would breathe new life into the program that has been kinda stagnant.
That being said, I'd prefer it to be a step up.
Leach is no upgrade from Tubs. Leach is the hot name this year but you should take a look at his record. I believe SheSaid posted it on the last thread. This would be a BAD hire.
Chris, over the last 5 years, how many times have we won less than 9 games?
auburn is know coast to coast for its stupid choices...
The recruits are already dropping like flies.... I have read 3 decommits already and its been a few hours....
we will win 2 next year.... warm up the xbox boys your knowledge will once again be needed to lead the great unwashed...
Who knows if Tub sent the coaches out today just to add to the drama?
I mean we've already had one coach leave t his year with drama that he set up as he left.
Sensi, can you summarize Mrs. Dunn's comments when she's done?
beat ala 6 times in 7 years
won 50 games - most by any auburn coach..
Puts school first.
Cares about players..
OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!
In the last 10 years how many times have we played for a conference title?
BCS bowl game?
Lost less than 4 games?
I think that's more of what's being looked at.
WarEagleRK, what drama did Franklin set up?
Who all has decommitted?
Sensi: what did mrs. dunn have to say?
She's done. Basically same as Amy Ensminger. Said her son was told in class by a friend. Stuff like that. Dogged the U for doing it this way.
Conner is the only de-commit I know about.
WarEagleRK, the last 10 years have been about the best in terms of wins in school history, with the possible exception of the 80s and Pat Dye. When you look at the competition this decade versus the 80s, the SEC is a lot tougher. We may have just fired the greatest coach in Auburn history.
Tony Franklin moved his vehicle from the private lot to the front of the athletic dept so he could carry his stuff out in front of the media.
"greatest coach in Auburn history"
Little early to call that Steve.
Steve,
Did you feel that Auburn was still heading in the right direction?
Did you feel that Tub was going to turn it around and go 10-2 or better next year?
If so, then I see your point. I don't think we were heading back in that direction.
it was/is classless, but what do you expect from auburn administration
Interesting that nothing has been posted on the Auburn website yet?
Dear Leader, who are the three decommits?
If Georgia can win 3 SEC titles this decade and so can LSU...and Arkansas play for 2 titles this decade, then I feel justified in feeling that we should have played for more than 2.
Nothing against Tommy.
thanks Sensi
Even Mike DuBose had one SEC title in 10 years.
It's beyond ironic for the coaches wife to call into a talk radio program to rant about being treated "classless".
WarEagleRK, I feel like with a good offensive coordinator that next season 9 was very likely and a possible SEC West Title. With guys like Freemon and Gray adding to a defense that lost next to nothing, the defense would be even better.
Most losses this season have been in close games. We could have easily contended for the West title, although I don't know about winning it.
Now it is very likely we will come in 5th in the West.
Mr. Sensible, did Dubose have as many west titles? How did Dubose do against top 10 opponents? Was Dubose one of the winningest coaches in Alabama history?
You know where the coaches wives will show up next? Finebaum.
Steve,
I disagree if we make the right hire.
Who is to say Tub would have hired the right OC. I mean he hired and fired Franklin.
Dubose played in 1/2 as many SEC title games and won just as many in 6 less years at Alabama.
No he's not an all time great, but...
ESPN headlines say he resigns - I wondered how it would run...
If I remember correctly last year Mark Gottfried's wife found F'baum at a basketball game and chewed him out for talking bad about her husband
SteveFC, no, but he had the hardware that mattered.
Just saying.
SEC West titles without the SEC Title are like winning the divisional pennant and getting swept in the first round.
Petrino contract prevents him from coming to Auburn? What are they going to do - shoot him?
Contract, shmontract.
A lot will depend upon what happens with the existing staff. If they all follow Tuberville to his next destination, then we do have real problems. If the defensive staff remains largely in tact, things could end up better.
For the offensive staff, I imagine they will all be gone. Nall and Gran will have no problem finding another gig. As for Knox and Ensminger, there is no telling.
I just wonder why Auburn hired a search firm.
Spence McCrackin is retiring at Opelika High.
Just saying...
I would guess we would like get a very conservative coach, possible a Paul Johnson type. I doubt another coach would risk trying to open things up at Auburn after they see the results it had on Tuberville's situation.
You know, I just thought of who might be the perfect coach, Bobby Johnson. He isn't a very big name, but he has done an incredible job with little talent. He is the type of coach I could see coming here.
Look no matter how you spin it, TT was just a little above average at Auburn. His peers in the SEC (Saban, Miles, Richt, Myer, Nutt, Fulmer) accomplished as much or more as TT did during his tenure at Auburn, in terms of SECCG game appearances, SEC titles, and MNCs.
To call him possibly our greatest coach is an insult to Jordan and Dye.
TT made the mistake of thinking that beating bama and winning 8 or 9 every year was good enough at Auburn. IMO (and apparently TPTB) that isn't good enough - period. Any Auburn man or woman that thinks it is, is selling their university and its potential on the gridiron short.
Neither Dye or Jordan was able to knock off high ranked opponents the way Tuberville has.
Neither Dye or Jordan was up against the same level of competition that Tuberville has faced, except possibly Jordan in the sixties and take a look at the record.
What was even more disturbing is the way they handled the firing. As I said on another thread, we could learn a lot from Clemson, Tennessee, of Mississippi State.
James in B'ham, Tuberville said that winning 9 or 10 wasn't good enough so I am not sure why you would say he thought 8 or 9 was okay. That was the reason for going to the spread in the first place.
And neither Dye nor Jordan lost to the mediocre opponents the way Tubs has (unless the whole team/season was in a down year).
They also didn't go seemingly out of their way to alienate TPTB (their bosses) and even the fanbase by being aloof and with coach-speakary.
Tuberville said he would be at Auburn as long as they would have him. He kept his word. Auburn did not.
I have got to think that he is probably relieved somewhat. The only time I really saw him show any emotion was when he yelled at the officials during the UGA game. I think it was time for both Auburn and Tubs.
Anyone read this? Wonder who put up the money - Lowder or Yella Fella?
The buyout portion of Tuberville's contract will be fulfilled, from which no state or university funds will be used
TT said whatever he thought the media and fans wanted to hear - that is evident in any of his presser this year. Spin and coach speak double talk were his norm.
Jordan did what he could to keep Auburn in the same universe as the Alabama's of the world in a different time. Dye brought Auburn to an equal footing with Alabama and forever changed football in this state because of what his teams accomplished.
Had TT not had a propensity for losing games he was not supposed to (which offsets winning ones you're not supposed to) then maybe he would be remembered differntly. 2004 was special, but one undefeated season does not make a legacy (see Tater Tot).
We have a stadium and field named after Jordan and Dye. I doubt we will see TT immortalized at AU.
I think the biggest issue Tuberville had was coordinator turnover. If that had ever stabalized, I think you would have seen different results, but that is the past. We need to look to the future.
I am guessing that they did give Tubs a chance to try to rid himself of the dead weight, but he chose to walk away with the big bucks he arranged when he let Auburn "twist in the wind" the last few offseasons. I personally think if the next coach struggles at all, it will be more due to the fact that Tubs and the BBQ boys have been outworked on the recruiting trail for several years now.
But anyway, I have what I think is a fair way to grade this all out in time... If more than one of the BBQ boys shows up on the staff at Florida, Georgia, LSU, Texas, USC, etc, then maybe they're worth more than I think. But if they show up at places like Millsaps College, then why don't some of you come back here to eat some crow?
I don't think we'll get the chance to grade Tubs out in another setting, because (a) the fire is gone and (b) he held AU up for around $35 million over the last ten years so he doesn't need to work. So I think we'll have to judge this decision by how the next coach performs after he's had 3 or 4 years to get his own recruits in. In the meantime, we can assess the competence of the BBQ boys by how they grade out in the labor market for assistants.
Steve from Columbia: You are lacking some perspective when you put Tuberville above Shug. First, it was a different day. Second, hate to tell you this -- Shug had more class then Tubs and won a national championship to boot. And didn't Dye win about 4 SEC championships to Tubs 1 -- although admittedly he didn't run as clean a program.
I'm actually not an old guy - but I take real exception to folks who put Tuberville's vaudeville act above Shug's outright class.
Tuberville said that winning 9 or 10 wasn't good enough (SteveinSC)
Then since he averaged 8.5 wins and 4 losses per season, he failed by his own standards. He also couldn't get that national championship he promised us 10 years ago.
James - your 7:39 post is great. You express very eloquently exactly what I mean with my less eloquent rants. Thanks.
Please someone explain to me why this was poorly handled? Tommy wasn't let go in the middle of a losing season, Jacobs nor Gouge made any claims that I have heard stating Tommy would retain his position. So what about this was poorly handled? Might I add that Alabama is a fire at will state.
Seems I'm bringing up the rear on every thread.
