Sen'Derrick Marks speaks, 12/30
Hey everyone. I was on my way out of town for a little get-away this morning when I learned about Sen'Derrick's decision to go pro. For reasons perhaps we'll discuss at a later date, I wasn't able to hit the HABOTN until now.
The upside: I have talked with Sen'Derrick. So let's get to business.
The upside: I have talked with Sen'Derrick. So let's get to business.
- How did you come to this decision?: "I've been thinking about it for a while. I probably figured it out during the past few days after going back and forth about it."
- So what was the determining factor?: "I don't want to say playing college football is easy ... because it isn't. I get ready just like everyone else, but I knew that I had gotten pretty good playing college ball. I just realized that I'm ready for that next challege -- to play on that next level."
- You making this decision just after Gene Chizik was hired makes it look like maybe you don't like him. What about that?: "I'm not much into believing you stay because of this coach or you leave because of this coach. I don't really know Coach Chizik, but that doesn't matter. Football is football to me. I'm leaving because I feel like I'm ready. It's the next thing for me to do."
- So what did the NFL tell you?: "I actually haven't heard from them yet."
- So you're going into this basically blind?: "I've got a good feeling about it. I think people know who I am."
- Are you going to graduate?: "I probably can't get that right now. I'm definitely going to graduate. I promised Kenny -- that's what I call (my dad) -- that I'd get that degree. I changed majors three semesters ago and I lost some credits. I'm still a year away."

Big loss for us in my opinion.
Yeah, I just hope AC and/or Powers don't follow him
S marks is one of my favorite AU players. A straight shooter in interviews and one of the best D-lineman AU has had in years. Best of luck to him. He will be hard to replace.
Jake Ricks can be a monster in the trenches. I hope he can stay healthy.
hate your plans changed JG but thanks. i'm gonna miss Mr. Marks. he's a cool dude.
Marks probably is my all-time favorite Auburn athlete ... though I've only been around since 1998.
Thanks for the coverage, Jay G. Sorry about your delayed plans.
Is this a good move for Marks?
If we lose Coleman too... then we have suddenly gone from the DL being a solid strength to being thin on the DL... Huge loss.
I hope he knows what he's doing... I wish him the best, but I think it's a mistake to go early.
I think it's probably going to be a good movie for Marks. He seems like a second- or third-round guy to me. That's good money ... assuming he makes the team and all.
Coleman seems more like a garden-variety OLB to me. He's a good college player. No doubt about that. Do the NFL guys slobber thinking about him? No.
Jay ...
I think your assessment is dead on.
one of my customers here in knoxville has a brother that plays for UT-Martin. he said his brother was extremely impressed with our D-Line. the linebackers? not so much. fwiw.
Have to agree with you Jay, probably a pretty good choice for Mr. Marks. Hope that CGC has some pretty solid D recruits on his radar screen, what with losing Marks and then maybe Coleman.
Will Auburn be in the running to get QB Robert Marve since he's leaving Miami?
I think this is a great move for Marks. He is definitely NFL caliber and even with the season we had, his skills are recognized. He will likely go in the first couple of rounds of the draft and likely get a contract that means he is set for life. Risking coming back just doesn't make sense. He is one injury away from being a greeter at Walmart.
I still say Coleman can gain little by returning to AU. He will still be undersized and playing out of position on the line. How much can he really improve his stock? And I hope he does return as an AU fan, I just don't see much upside for him to improve his NFL draft status.
I see, or should I say zee, the change in your name there ZteveFC, you looking to take over as the next DC?
Someone will step up on D. They always do. I think we will be fine. I am more concerned about finding a replacement for Brandon Cox.
Also, I've had about enough of this video auto play stuff. Enough!
i was confused myself michael. craziness!
Michael, I'll get that handled right now.
Handled.
I hope you mean you handled the quarterback situation. If not, handling the video situation is a pretty good consolation prize.
ask and ye shall receive = JGT
don't mess with the man, yo.
dude, we've got Chris Todd (post-surgery). why would we worry?
i keed, i keed!
Michael, I am just afraid we have a lot of solid d-lineman but no proven play-makers like Marks and coleman. Those were the two guys the other team had to plan for. Maybe Antoine Coleman can put it all together next year.

Who else?
People didn't exactly run away from the middle of our defense this year. Not sure you can blame Sen for that, seems like he was hurt a bit, but I was a little disappointed. We were really good on D-line, but not dominant. I think we can be really good next year too.
Depressed,
"How much can he really improve his stock?"
By being more consistent vs the run and improving his pass rush technique beyond just running by people.
As a fellow Mobilian and big time fan, I wish Sen-D all the best. Although I would love for him to play for us one more year, I think this decision was absolutely the right one for him to make. As an unhearalded and not heavily recruited guy from Vigor High that made the absolute most of his opportunity, jumping now before he suffers injury will probably insure the long-term financial stability of he and his family. Aside from that, there just aren't that many dominant D-linemen in this year's draft. I have absolutely no doubt that he will become a regular for some team on Sundays and I extend my sincerest gratitude for representing Auburn so well both on and off the field.
Hey Monica--why not have Frank Spaziani as the DC? At least he has the right letter in his name!
Michael, I didn't mean to imply the D-line was dominant this year. Marks was not the player he had been the 2 years before, but I do think it was due to his injury. I just think if you remove Marks and Coleman from the line-up there will be a drop-off. Hopefully, you are right and I am wrong.
RK, Let's say Coleman does those things to improve. Do you think it would improve his draft position that much? He is still a LB playing at end and he probably won't get any bigger. I think that is his biggest problem. I can see your point though.
who says CGC won't put AC at LB? If so, a year to learn his probable NFL position could be very beneficial.
As an Alumni of Vigor High School, I for one am glad for Sen D.
I wish him well in all future endeavors
Doesn't seem likely that Marve would end up at Auburn. Marve cannot play for any team in the ACC, SEC or any school in Florida per the terms of his release.
This makes Shannon look bad in my opinion. I understand the no SEC thing and maybe the no Florida thing. But what is he trying to accomplish by not allowing him to play in the SEC? Seems to me that he just doesn't want Marve to be successful at any big time school.
Also seems pretty crappy to not allow him to play anywhere in his own homestate. I understand the not allowing UF, they play each other. But what about USF? Its 20 minutes from his house.
Sorry for the Essay.
Monica,
Not a Clint Eastwood fan?
I nominate the following for DC
Gunnery Sgt Highway
Josie Wales
Harry Callahan
Bill Munny
Agent Frank Horrigan
Private Kelly
Jed Cooper
Pardner
Definately gonna miss Sen'Derrick. He was always funny to watch when interviewed. Any idea if the new coaching staff is gonna continue to allow you guys access to players like AU has done in the past. I hope they continue to let players and assistant coaches speak with media as well. Gives the fans something to see and hear during the week when there are no games being played. Thanks for all you've done for the school, the team, and us fans Mr. Marks. Good luck in the future and I look forward to watching you play on Sundays. You earned it man.
