Summarizing the morning talks

Here's a cleaner summarization of what has been discussed today:
  • Jacobs said he and university president Jay Gogue gave Tuberville the $5.1 million buyout basically as a gift to his 10 years of service. Since Tuberville resigned, the school technically wasn't on the hook for that money. Auburn elected to give him that money. Tuberville also agreed to hang around in Auburn and help the school in various ways that weren't described.

  • Auburn told Tuberville that he wouldn't be saddled by the buyout clause if he sought another job. The contract states Tuberville would owe Auburn $5.1 million if he left for another gig.

  • Jacobs said he had no intention of firing Tuberville at any point.

  • Jacobs said Tuberville's resignation was not coaxed and, in fact, Jacobs repeatedly asked the coach to stay.

  • Jacobs said Auburn has retained Bill Carr and Associates, a Florida-based search firm, to assist in the quest for Tuberville's successor.

  • Jacobs said cost will be no object in terms of hiring the next coach.

  • Jacobs said his search will be "efficient," but he said there will be "no rush to judgment."

  • Current assistants may or may not stay to provide support as Auburn makes the transition from Tuberville to The Next Guy. Some of those guys have guarantees and some don't.

I think the powers that be know that bringing Mike Leach in would be foolish....he is basically Tony Franklin with a mullet (and an offense that works)

Maybe I'm just gullible, but watching the video of the press conference just now, JJ strikes me as a pretty honest, down to earth guy. Now how that all fits in with what Tommy's mother supposedly said is hard to put together, though.

I still have a hard time believing what is being said. Just seems fishy. Like others, I question why did he get the buyout money if he quit? Could the boosters that hate him and raised that money really have been that charitable? Doesn't smell right. Is it any more likely that Tubs got fired, decided he just wanted to retire instead of start anew elsewhere, in which case the current resignation story is better for all parties involved.

Either way, it makes our program look great, so I am all for misinformation in that case.

The buyout is a significant token of goodwill that ensures:

A.)Tommy Tuberville does not have a bitter taste in his mouth toward Auburn - this is important for recruiting purposes, for him assisting in fundraising for the University, and keeping those who strongly supported him as part of the family.

B.)Prospective new coaches believe we're not as mean and vile as we're made out to be.

c.) It was the right thing to do.

D.) If he'd resigned without getting his buyout, there would have been rampant speculation that something was majorly wrong (i.e. NCAA violations)

RK, I lived in the Noog and I listened to Sportstalk all the time before I moved away for college in 2000, so you were not alone in your Auburn fandom in a tri-state area flooded with UT, UGA, and Bama fans.

Those were the days when I considered UT fans almost as bad as Bama fans and always made sure to tune in after UT lost Florida and Spurrier for the endless enjoyment of their bereavement at having lost to the Evil Genius yet again. It was always so funny because they always seemed so shocked that they lost to those guys year after year. Good times.

Not saying like that hire, but I have said from the W VA game that he would be the next coach.

I personally would take a good look at the guy from Tulsa or Boise St. (Don't give me the they have never coached in the SEC) Their offense will work in the SEC. I said last night that now it may not because they do not run up on defenses like the SEC has intheir conferences, but I thinkn they can change the offense somewhat to compete against the speed of the defense here.

mwdeav,

how was paying Tubs "the right thing to do" unless he was fired. I just don't see any way you can get around the fact that 5 MILLION dollars changing hands has got to indicate a little more than a straight forward resignation.

Also, where was Tubs today. If he's on board as this 5 Million dollar goodwill ambassador for AU, why was he not at the press conference? Seems like having him there to back up what JJ was saying would have stopped lots of speculation from lots of sources.

Does anyone know if he is planning to speak at any time?

I really don't care if the fired him or if he resigned, I just want them to tell it like it is. There are too many mixed signals here. So what if they fired him, that happens. As someone said a while back, this is a business and it's not one for folks with tender feelings. But really, just tell it like it is and move on.

Yeah, RK, it's crazy how things have turned around at Ooltewah; the transition from terrible football program to probably the elite high school program in the area is astounding. The end of my high school years saw the beginning of the turning of the tide.

They got a player, Jacquez Smith, who is a monster DE. He was only a junior this year, so he still has a year left, but he's getting a lot of interest from a lot of top schools in the SEC. I've yet to see Auburn on that list, but it would be nice.

Sorry, RK, never made it out many Mocs games. I think I might have gone to a game or two at the old McClellan Field or whatever, but not at Max-Finly. I was just unwilling to give up my time on Saturdays to watch the Mocs instead of Auburn and the SEC.

Now I have gone to quite a few Mocs basketball games over the years. I went to the SoCon tourney a couple of years back when they made the dance and me and Eddie use to go to Mocs basketball games all the time when they were the dominant team in the SoCon, culminating in the Sweet 16 run back in '97 I guess before you got there.

The Roundhouse (now McKenzie Arena) was always packed for Mocs game and was a great atmosphere. Not really the case any longer.

I went to Rhea County, I think at one point we had won 17 straight over Ooltewah until they turned the program around.

However Ooltewah is such a big school, you'd think eventually they would get players. I'm curious to see what happens to them with the new school they are building over in that area.

I think I went to one game at Chamberlain field before they closed it down and that was the Alcorn State game where Steve McNair had 600 total yards and 8 TD's vs the Mocs.

Michael, I have proof women are evil. Women take time and money so:

Women = Time X Money

And we all know time is money so

Women = Money X Money

And we all know Money is the root of all evil, so

Money = SQRT( Evil )

And therefore

Women = SQRT( Evil ) * SQRT( Evil )

Which comes up

Women = Evil

There you have it. Definitive proof that women are evil.

I'm still a little confused by it given that smaller class schools are now considered part of our region. Like I think Rhea Co. might be in our region now, but they are a class below us like Cleveland.

I have been to Finley a few times, and it is nice, but like you said, it is only good for the I-AA championship game. I really wonder if they will ever be able to build up a program and excitement there at UTC.

McLovin - okie dokie. Cordova beat my high school last week, but I'd love to see them beat Leeds.

Why do so many seem willing to settle for Fisher of Muschamp? I mean, they are good coordinators, but that doesn't always translate into being a good head coach. I would think we could find someone with head coaching experience rather than doing on the job training.

Well, FSJ, you may only have nine scholarship seniors, but we are making moves at Auburn to get to the same state next season. I do believe we will see players transferring.

Here's my take:

RECRUITING is bigger than schemes right now at AU.

No way a guy can recruit with the SEC coaches without connections to AL, GA, FL & LA.

HC experience isn't a must here to me.

AND WHAT IS TERRY BOWDEN SAYING???

Party supplies...

Well there will be a pretty big party this weekend at the FSJ residence.

Not as big as last week, but big enough.

Two words: hunch punch

Also, I leave the face painting to the women.

Leach would be an awful hire. We would become the softest team in the SEC. Paul Johnson can't recruit either. No high school kid in 2009 wants to run the triple option like all the armed forces schools. There's nothing to sell.

Yeah, Rhea County is getting moved up from 4A to 6A. If I read correctly Rhea will be the smallest school in 6A.

Unfortunately for everyone involved Maryville will move up to 6A as well and bring their 75 game winning streak with them.

Hunch punch? That's one highfalutin party you're throwing there, bammer.

If it turns out to be Leach, I sure hope he brings that bell-ringer tradition with him from Tech. There's nothing quite like having a guy willing to do this in front of a national television audience:

Funny then, still funny now.
