Summarizing the morning talks
Here's a cleaner summarization of what has been discussed today:

- Jacobs said he and university president Jay Gogue gave Tuberville the $5.1 million buyout basically as a gift to his 10 years of service. Since Tuberville resigned, the school technically wasn't on the hook for that money. Auburn elected to give him that money. Tuberville also agreed to hang around in Auburn and help the school in various ways that weren't described.
- Auburn told Tuberville that he wouldn't be saddled by the buyout clause if he sought another job. The contract states Tuberville would owe Auburn $5.1 million if he left for another gig.
- Jacobs said he had no intention of firing Tuberville at any point.
- Jacobs said Tuberville's resignation was not coaxed and, in fact, Jacobs repeatedly asked the coach to stay.
- Jacobs said Auburn has retained Bill Carr and Associates, a Florida-based search firm, to assist in the quest for Tuberville's successor.
- Jacobs said cost will be no object in terms of hiring the next coach.
- Jacobs said his search will be "efficient," but he said there will be "no rush to judgment."
- Current assistants may or may not stay to provide support as Auburn makes the transition from Tuberville to The Next Guy. Some of those guys have guarantees and some don't.

I think the powers that be know that bringing Mike Leach in would be foolish....he is basically Tony Franklin with a mullet (and an offense that works)
Leach would be like David Coverdale singing with Jimmy Page.
Just not a good fit.
Maybe I'm just gullible, but watching the video of the press conference just now, JJ strikes me as a pretty honest, down to earth guy. Now how that all fits in with what Tommy's mother supposedly said is hard to put together, though.
ditto to what WarEagleRK just said.
as for Spurrier... i REALLY hope this is all just speculation and BS. but growing up in Tallahassee and being an Auburn Grad, i would cry myself to sleep every night if he comes to Auburn.
(which would never happen....hopefully)
I think Leach would be disappointed that we only have 2 Waffle Houses. Wait, is that right?
fwiw, i was referring to WarEagleRK's previous comment about Leach not being a good fit
Man, what a day to be away from the computer. It sounds like we will have a slower process that I thought. Also looks like Leach is re-upping at Texas Tech, or at least ESPN believes so.
Hardin,
Feel free to agree with anything I say. I'm always right. Just ask me.
Leach = poor man's Tuberville
One by the Supper Club and one by the mall. Don't remember any others Kristina...
wow kristina, those are some big, fancy words. kinda made my eyes cross
I agree about Leach....Bad Fit.
If Hush goes to Carolina, they would lose any remaining shot at Johnnie Farms from Perry
Hugh, not hush
Oh wait there are 3 then. They just built one on Glenn by the interstate. I knew i was mising one.
Sorry Harrison ;-)
Scott, that's my thinking. Why would he even be considered, seeing as how he is basically Franklin all over again.
Leach = a non homeless looking intelligent Franklin
Was it a mistake for Jacobs to say that money will not be object in this hire?
Thanks - Being from talahassee 'splains it.
Convington -- I said the same thing. Its hard for me to just say Jacobs is a flat out liar.
And did someone say something about Tub's mom saying something?
Leach is a much, much better coach than TF and does NOT run the same system. Ask TF. He specifically said his spread was not like Rich Rod's and not like Mike Leach's
There is also a WH off Glenn exit 54.
antone remember tiger time out by the railroad tracks on college. like waffle house but awesomer
I say we just ignore the word spread in our search.
Ignoring the word spread is like saying the name P. Johnson. I like it...
I'm fine with Paul Johnson, I've said several times he'd be my # 1 pick.
I apologized to Jay for not getting him on today, but there just wasn't much I could do. We had an obligation that has been set for many months now and it just so happened to come about at not the greatest of times.
That said, it's not like we were holding a benefit for ourselves over there. The money we raised today went to give underprivileged kids a decent Christmas.
Does Texas Tech/Leach even have RBs on the roster?
I would have him and Davis as 1 a/b on my list. Leach wouldn't make it at all...
Josh,
I listened in a bit yesterday online and most of it was you guys doing the fund raising thing, well that and some tool calling out Mr.S.
I thought it was good stuff really, and I think you guys should be commended for the effort. Beats the hell out of the self serving sports radio we have here in the ham.
What was the final bid on those SECCG tixs? I know it started at $1600 for 4.
A little recruiting news - since the firing/resignation of Tubs - Bama has offered a scholarship to Lutzenkirchen.
That was nice of you to apologize Josh. You guys are doing a good thing with the Clearing House.
Buuut, you did have time for Scarbinksy....Just saying ;-)
Josh,
I totally understand. I used to work in talk radio in Chattanooga and we were doing a live remote raising money for some flood victims once and it was the week of the UT/FSU National title game.
For you single guys out there, Leach gives great dating advice. Probably not a great fit at AU, but the guy is entertaining.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxBsXzvENpo
RK,
What station was that for? I remember there being a sports talk station somewhere around 100 or 101 on the dial in the mid-late 90s.
I used to listen to that all of the time, even remember hearing Jim Fyffe on their once - good memories!
Harrison....
Saddest day ever was when the guy switched tiger time to veggies 2 go
josh- you rock...except for the movie reviews
Seriously, if Tubs did resign on his own accord and the university was not contractually obligated to pay him $5.1 million, is anybody else kind of outraged that they did?
I mean, I'm happy that Tubs is well off and I don't blame him for accepting the 'gift', but are there not other, better ways to spend $5.1 million in the university's interest. Library expansion, new dorms, etc.?
Talk Radio 102.3
I worked there from the start of 98-00 when I was getting my masters at UTC.
There has been a show called Sporttalk on there since the late 80's.
Any time is Tiger Time.
I remember the one on College in front of the Winn-Dixie.
I'm glad someone remembers that. Tiger Time was great, and right next to the bars. Kudos to the guy that opened waffle house next to supper club
Jim, that was HI-larious!
Ahhh that sounds familiar RK. I had some good times in Chattavegas back then...
Thanks for the answer Jay. Tuberville meddling with the offense has always been something that I wondered about. It appears that I suspected more than there really was.
James,
It was a fun show to do, but when I was on it I think I was the only Auburn fan in the tri-state area as all we got were UT, Bama & UGA calls.
I still have a hard time believing what is being said. Just seems fishy. Like others, I question why did he get the buyout money if he quit? Could the boosters that hate him and raised that money really have been that charitable? Doesn't smell right. Is it any more likely that Tubs got fired, decided he just wanted to retire instead of start anew elsewhere, in which case the current resignation story is better for all parties involved.
Either way, it makes our program look great, so I am all for misinformation in that case.
Josh:
It is a worthy cause that you all were participating in. Some vixen put me up to complaining. Sorry about that.
Someone mentioned veggies to go earlier... I really miss that place. Green bean casserole, squash casserole, sweet potato casserole, with some decent chicken fingers in more of a role players spot. Man, someone mail me some o that.
Women are evil, FSJ, and are the root of most problems in this world.
Kristina: Actually, we didn't have time for Scarbinsky. If you heard the interview you know we had to apologize to him for keeping him on hold, then he got cut off and we never went back to him. There were just too many things going on at one time and there was no reason to try and just cram Jay into it. We'll get him on tomorrow -- if he'll do it -- and we'll do it right.
True, Micheal....true
The buyout is a significant token of goodwill that ensures:
A.)Tommy Tuberville does not have a bitter taste in his mouth toward Auburn - this is important for recruiting purposes, for him assisting in fundraising for the University, and keeping those who strongly supported him as part of the family.
B.)Prospective new coaches believe we're not as mean and vile as we're made out to be.
c.) It was the right thing to do.
D.) If he'd resigned without getting his buyout, there would have been rampant speculation that something was majorly wrong (i.e. NCAA violations)
I'm just messing with ya, Josh. Like I said you guys are doing a really great thing!
Michael,
I agree 100% about women....
If it weren't for the fact that they possess.....
Greater mental capacity, faker?
Veggies to go not as good as a grown up. everything there is mushy.
poor driving skillz, faker?
did anyone else just get an email from Jay Jacobs? it's pretty long to post here but it basically summarizes the press conference today.
One more time. Muschamp is in the fold. He will be introduced no later than Monday.
Just sayin'
RK, I lived in the Noog and I listened to Sportstalk all the time before I moved away for college in 2000, so you were not alone in your Auburn fandom in a tri-state area flooded with UT, UGA, and Bama fans.
Those were the days when I considered UT fans almost as bad as Bama fans and always made sure to tune in after UT lost Florida and Spurrier for the endless enjoyment of their bereavement at having lost to the Evil Genius yet again. It was always so funny because they always seemed so shocked that they lost to those guys year after year. Good times.
wtc ... you're scooping the world with that information. Congrats.
Not saying like that hire, but I have said from the W VA game that he would be the next coach.
I personally would take a good look at the guy from Tulsa or Boise St. (Don't give me the they have never coached in the SEC) Their offense will work in the SEC. I said last night that now it may not because they do not run up on defenses like the SEC has intheir conferences, but I thinkn they can change the offense somewhat to compete against the speed of the defense here.
Michael..
Interesting word choice there... Skillz.
Kristina:
I've never experienced what you mentioned. At least not within the last few days.
I wouldn't rule Muschamp out, but I don't think he's even the top choice. Considering the animosity with him and Jacobs, I find it highly doubtful.
RK, Michael, Eddie,
Did any of you guys ever do things with the Chattanooga Auburn Club?
I was a member of that for a while in the 90s, and we used to get together and watch the games... some dump on Lee Highway, I forget the name.
Very odd the # of Chattavegas connections on here!
Thanks Jay, you can go to print with that anytime and take the credit. :)
Michael4AU,
The first two years I was there we combined to be 8-13 and UT won a National title and Bama won a SEC title, so unfortunately I didn't have much to brag about.
The callers in those days made me hate UT as well. I think every car in Chattanooga at the time had a 1998 National Champion tag or sticker on it.
mwdeav,
how was paying Tubs "the right thing to do" unless he was fired. I just don't see any way you can get around the fact that 5 MILLION dollars changing hands has got to indicate a little more than a straight forward resignation.
Also, where was Tubs today. If he's on board as this 5 Million dollar goodwill ambassador for AU, why was he not at the press conference? Seems like having him there to back up what JJ was saying would have stopped lots of speculation from lots of sources.
Does anyone know if he is planning to speak at any time?
I really don't care if the fired him or if he resigned, I just want them to tell it like it is. There are too many mixed signals here. So what if they fired him, that happens. As someone said a while back, this is a business and it's not one for folks with tender feelings. But really, just tell it like it is and move on.
James,
I'm guessing the dump you were talking about was Buds in Brainerd. I watched a couple of games there.
I went to the 2001 Auburn/Vandy game in Nashville with the Chattanooga Auburn club. Sadly Choo Choo AU doesn't seem to do very much anymore, or at least I never hear about it.
Yep that's it RK. That place was full of UT rednecks back in the day - probably still is if it still exists.
Back then all they ever did was meet to watch some games, never any road trips. By 2001 I was back in the ham though.
Tommy's mom apparently said that he told her he was fired. I'd post the link to the story, but I'm not sure if I should do that or not...
Jay,
Has anyone heard anything from Tuberville? If not, do you know when we will? Or did I just miss it somewhere today?
Buds has moved and been remodeled. I haven't been there since they moved, so I'm not sure how dumpy it is anymore.
Here is the problem
Muschamp gets hired, ok, well is a defensive guru, right
Who in the hell is going to run our offense, same problem as before.
Jay,
Does Rhoades have Utah State on speed dial. Also heard Pitt's D coordinator is leaving for the UMASS head coaching job.
A lady named Patsy who's close to AU & Tubs said Muschie thinks he burned his bridge because of something he said.
Any idea what CWM might have said?
Speaking of restaurants in Auburn, when did the Golden Rule BBQ place close? We tried to eat there when we went the George Washingto BB game, but it was something else. We don't get to Auburn too often.
James,
We went to the aforementioned locale on Brainerd road to peruse some guys every now and then in the 90s, and then we periodically went to these banquet dinners where people like Tubs and some SID would show up to talk.
Back in 1995, me and my brother (Eddie) went up to Lexington with the club for the Kentucky game. My dad still keeps up with the ChooChoo AU club, but I'm not sure how involved he is. I don't live there anymore.
I don't think I'm scooping anyone. That rumors has been there since the West VA game. Also rumored that the buyout money was raised back then, just in case. I was just sticking to the original rumors until they are proven false. But if you think I have scooped everyone, go ahead and print it.
Michael- James is an Ooltewah Alum as we are. He was only there one year though I believe.
Jay,
i heard Petersen from Boise may be a candidate at MSU because of his prior relationship with the AD there. If that is true, any chance he'd move one state over instead for bigger $$$$?
What are the buyouts for all the coaches we are considering? How much more will our boosters have to pay to get the coach we want, since money is no object?
Brainerd?
Pancakes house 'ey?
My money is starting to lean to Jimbo Fisher.
Anyone know if he can recruit?
Peruse some games. Wow, need to preview those posts from now on. Who knows, maybe it was a great spot to peruse guys, because every establishment on Brainerd road just screams "classy."
James- Like my brother said, I went to a couple of times to watch the game with the club and the trip to Lexington. Seems like a good club. I need to join the Atlanta club here, but I haven't. Probably will soon, so I can go see the new coach speak when he makes the rounds.
Michael,
I almost went on that trip in 95 now that you mention it. Work got in the way. The one thing I remember from that year was meeting at Bud's to watch the LSU game and getting stuck out on the patio in the rain.
I also went to a dinner either that year or next when Tater Tot showed up. Somewhere I had a pic of that.
Small world I guess.
Eddie, does James know that Ooltewah is like, good at football now. If not, that's always a culture shoch for former Owls.
Josh - Of course it's a good cause. Just too much air time all at once. You start to reach the point of diminishing returns. That's just my opinion after 10+ years of fundraising for non-profits and a listener. I realize exactly what that's worth. :-)
Actually Eddie/Michael - I didn't realize you two were brothers till just now!
Leeds 17
Cordova 7
.40 seconds in 2nd qtr
Super Six is the Old Gray Pile of chit on CSS as we speak.
Small world indeed, James.
Anybody ever get to play The Honors Course in Ooltewah??
I once ran over a drifter on purpose in Chattanooga. Small world!!!
Go Cordova!
When I was in HS, Ooltewah was horrible in football, but that's all changed now.
It's going to be interesting next year when TN realigns everything since they are creating a 6A class for athletics.
Chris,
You speak of the Patsy via Finebaum show? dont waste your time with that lady. she is probably talking about the rift bt Jacobs and Muschamp about contract and peach bowl tickets.
I've been to the Honors course for the radio station I worked at, but never played there.
Yep Harrison, once, about 1997.
One helluva nice place!
Jay G. Sorry to turn this thread into a trip down memory lane. I just think it's a small world when three guys who went to a school called Ooltewah are all part of the AU family and on a reporter's blog from the gump! I'm nostalgic and sentimental like that.
Time to make the evening commute home now - later hotties!
my old roommate did an intern there one summer around 97 or 98. he said it was spectacular
Harrison, me and Eddie actually use to caddy out there. We got to play for free every Monday. Eddie actually talked to Lupton and got him to grant the caddies a Caddy-Guest Day once a year where we could bring in a guest to play all day, however many holes we wanted to, for free.
The Honors is one of the true gems of golfing in the South, and indeed, the country, and yet so few no it exists, but that is how Lupton wants it.
bama has a game on Saturday?
That's what I've hard about it. Hopefully I'll meet someone that can weasel me on one day
Muschamp IS NOT COMING.
So you guys who all were in the Chattanooga area, I'm sure we all went to a ton of Mocs football games, right?
I hope Reynolds doesn't mind that I snatched this off his Facebook. Someone commented, "Take MIKE LEACH PLEASE! Get his classless pirate humping a#$ out of the Big 12! He's an embarrassment to the league!"
bama has an a** kicking coming saturday.
3- In that case I'll have to tune in.
considering how 2008 has been for your boy Harrison, I fully expect Bama to somehow win Saturday. vomit.
Yeah, RK, it's crazy how things have turned around at Ooltewah; the transition from terrible football program to probably the elite high school program in the area is astounding. The end of my high school years saw the beginning of the turning of the tide.
They got a player, Jacquez Smith, who is a monster DE. He was only a junior this year, so he still has a year left, but he's getting a lot of interest from a lot of top schools in the SEC. I've yet to see Auburn on that list, but it would be nice.
I say Bama gets seriously exposed Saturday. Best team they've played this year may well be Ole Miss. UF will be a huge step up the way they are playing now. I hope it's real ugly for the bammers.
Read this if you want to throw up all over you computer:

Maybe our new Coach can now bring in Tim Simon from Cordova.
Sorry, RK, never made it out many Mocs games. I think I might have gone to a game or two at the old McClellan Field or whatever, but not at Max-Finly. I was just unwilling to give up my time on Saturdays to watch the Mocs instead of Auburn and the SEC.
Now I have gone to quite a few Mocs basketball games over the years. I went to the SoCon tourney a couple of years back when they made the dance and me and Eddie use to go to Mocs basketball games all the time when they were the dominant team in the SoCon, culminating in the Sweet 16 run back in '97 I guess before you got there.
The Roundhouse (now McKenzie Arena) was always packed for Mocs game and was a great atmosphere. Not really the case any longer.
Michael4AU,
I went to Rhea County, I think at one point we had won 17 straight over Ooltewah until they turned the program around.
However Ooltewah is such a big school, you'd think eventually they would get players. I'm curious to see what happens to them with the new school they are building over in that area.
If I had a dollar for every time I've heard or read, "The Crimson Tide, meanwhile, have just nine scholarship seniors -- fewest in the nation" I could pay for the buyout of any coach we wanted.
I think I went to one game at Chamberlain field before they closed it down and that was the Alcorn State game where Steve McNair had 600 total yards and 8 TD's vs the Mocs.
I was at Auburn when UTC made their sweet 16 run, so I missed out on that fun.
Finley Stadium is a really nice place, but it only gets filled up once per year and that's the 1-AA national championship game.
McLovin are you from Cordova?
Mon, if you were playing a drinking game last Saturday with that phrase...
I'd be a one drunk hottie.
Sadly the University of Tennessee system has started suggesting that UTC & UT-Martin should close down their athletic depts. They are facing major budget cuts.
Maybe Fulmer's buyout and Kiffin's contract is the problem?
Hey Hotties, if you are requesting to be in the facebook group, shoot me an e-mail and let me know your user name here or else we won't admit you... Thanks!
Michael, I have proof women are evil. Women take time and money so:
Women = Time X Money
And we all know time is money so
Women = Money X Money
And we all know Money is the root of all evil, so
Money = SQRT( Evil )
And therefore
Women = SQRT( Evil ) * SQRT( Evil )
Which comes up
Women = Evil
There you have it. Definitive proof that women are evil.
Alabama may have only 9 Scholership Seniors, but they all start.
Kristina,
Can you let me in the facebook group?
TIA,
FSJ
Faker I think you need a promotion...
Same patsy but she called the 10 am show on Jox.
I hope its not Leach.
I'm 1000% hoping its Butch Davis but I'd take Fisher.
RK, where I use to live I would actually be zoned for the new school they are building so it will be interesting to see how things work out. Diddo goes for realignment. I'm still a little confused by it given that smaller class schools are now considered part of our region. Like I think Rhea Co. might be in our region now, but they are a class below us like Cleveland.
I have been to Finley a few times, and it is nice, but like you said, it is only good for the I-AA championship game. I really wonder if they will ever be able to build up a program and excitement there at UTC.
Leeds has a heckuva football team...
They have a running back as big as Andre Smith (I kid somewhat)that can fly....
Monica
No I am not from Cordova but I have watched Simon play a few times. I was raised in Hueytown.
McLovin - okie dokie. Cordova beat my high school last week, but I'd love to see them beat Leeds.
Why do so many seem willing to settle for Fisher of Muschamp? I mean, they are good coordinators, but that doesn't always translate into being a good head coach. I would think we could find someone with head coaching experience rather than doing on the job training.
I told y'all Fbaum would be playing Amy Ensminger's call on his show. lol
Mon:
Did you know that Alabama has only NINE scholarship seniors?
Think Finebaum is about to play the Amy Ensminger thing again.
Everybody drink!!
Well, FSJ, you may only have nine scholarship seniors, but we are making moves at Auburn to get to the same state next season. I do believe we will see players transferring.
Faker - Don't you need to be buying party supplies or painting your face or something?
No doubt SFC...
Any new coaching staff will creat a mass exodus.
Anyone here live in Auburn going to watch the game at BWW Saturday? I know Will and I will be there.
Check out faker's new promotion on facebook, mon
Here's my take:
RECRUITING is bigger than schemes right now at AU.
No way a guy can recruit with the SEC coaches without connections to AL, GA, FL & LA.
HC experience isn't a must here to me.
AND WHAT IS TERRY BOWDEN SAYING???
Party supplies...
Well there will be a pretty big party this weekend at the FSJ residence.
Not as big as last week, but big enough.
Two words: hunch punch
Also, I leave the face painting to the women.
Leach would be an awful hire. We would become the softest team in the SEC. Paul Johnson can't recruit either. No high school kid in 2009 wants to run the triple option like all the armed forces schools. There's nothing to sell.
LOL Kristina - It's about time Faker admit why he has camped out here on the HABOTN. I'm happy to see it in print.
I sense that someone is going under the bus....SOON!
Yeah, Rhea County is getting moved up from 4A to 6A. If I read correctly Rhea will be the smallest school in 6A.
Unfortunately for everyone involved Maryville will move up to 6A as well and bring their 75 game winning streak with them.
Hunch punch? That's one highfalutin party you're throwing there, bammer.
Jay,as I watched the press conference I so wanted to believe that was the way it really went down, but in my heart being around AU football and knowing how it works there was some b.s. from J.J. Ur thoughts?
The sickest I ever got was off of PGA & punch where someone mixed a far greater ratio of PGA in than needed.
sounds like a party at my house. hunch punch, miller high life and corn dogs
Faker - you gonna have a stack of Dixie cups for your honored guests to self serve about elbow deep?
Mon:
We expect more Auburn fans this weekend.
Faker - How much longer are you going to deny you're an Aubie? For goodness sakes you surround yourself with us non-stop!
Last time I had hunch-punch ist was dipped out of a bathtub.
Tarrant fer ya.
Harrison, are you an LSU fan?
LMAO Chris. That's the funniest thing I've read all day. Good stuff.
My last experience with HP - Somebody's high school graduation party in the late 80's. Sickest I've evah, evah been. Makes me shudder thinking about it now.
jay has video up, btw...
Its was some good juice now.
I also rememebr getting blasted and throwing up GREEN beer from Momma's Package Store in Auburn.
We bout GREEN Beast Lite by the gallon because it was cheap.
Its was green for St. Patty's day but this was like late April.
sweeeeeetttt --- being in college ROCKed!
nope..corn dogs are just plain delicious
Harrison - I think you should head over to Fakers house this weekend.
If it turns out to be Leach, I sure hope he brings that bell-ringer tradition with him from Tech. There's nothing quite like having a guy willing to do this in front of a national television audience:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFxwOLbImcU
Funny then, still funny now.
Isn't the first song they play in that BellRinger video the Eye of the Tiger?
