Anthony Gulley WAS in

EDIT @ 5:30 p.m.: OK. So maybe Anthony Gulley didn't commit after all.

Our friends at AUTigers.com reported earlier today that Brantley High standout Anthony Gulley officially had cast his lot with the Tigers. He said last weekend that he would commit to the Tigers in the future, but wasn't prepared to make that assertion public until after visiting Troy this weekend. He thought it was honorable to stick with his promise to visit the Trojans, which I thought was commendable.

Sounds like that trip to Troy still is on.

Here's what I had to say about Gulley earlier this week:

Anthony Gulley, WR from Brantley: Very country. I initially was surprised to see Gulley paired up with Ryan Pugh and Lee Ziemba last weekend. Then I met Gulley. He's very country. Shy kid, very quiet. He really likes baseball, too, and seems eager to play both football and baseball at Auburn. He's a shortstop by trade. Gulley also can play centerfield.

Maybe he can play basketball like the Person brothers too.

RE Farms, the Rivals headlines say that he's made a "final" decision and also says he has "no" interest in any other school but UNC.

Of course, that's the "free" info; I'm sure there's a whole lot more to the story (for the meager cost of $299).

So file away Gulley until a later date. He's still 100% Auburn ... just not yet committed.

Not intentionally, but the result speaks for itself. I agree with you on recruiting. While acknowledging I have seen none of these players in person, way too much competing with Southern Miss, Troy, etc for my comfort. I didn't expect miracles, but these last two recruiting seasons are reminding me of the Bowden years.

It will take a few years.

At least on the recruiting side of it, I liken Auburns approach to Bama's when Satan came in. They are fighting for the big names strait out of the shoot.
The big Diff. is that instead of having a big name coach to push, and saying he knows how to bring in the best staff, they brought in a well known staff that can stand on their own.

Everyone-I was not trying to imply that S Miss and Troy do not have talented players who could start for Auburn. I just don't see beating LSU, UGA and the other top-tier conference teams by not getting more of the top-tier players they are competing for. And I don't think it is fair to judge this staff by this recruiting season. Next year will be a more telling tale of their recruiting strength. I hope they can come up big.

Here is some news from AJC about another possible recuit:

The Tigers’ new defensive line coach, Tracy Rocker, is expected to discuss scholarship offers with Gainesville senior defensive lineman Josh Jackson.

Jackson, who is coming off official visits to Arkansas and Toledo, had been scheduled to visit Ole Miss on Jan. 30. He will now visit Auburn on the last weekend prior to signing day on Feb. 4.

Jackson, who has been offered by Ole Miss, appears intent on following Rocker to Auburn. Rocker recently departed the Rebels’ program to accept a position on his alma mater’s coaching staff.

And, here is some more news from the AJC on Alburn attempting to recruit a receiver:

By Jeff Hood | Tuesday, January 20, 2009, 07:36 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Several high-profile colleges plan to send coaches to Gainesville on Thursday to meet with Red Elephants junior receiver Tai-ler Jones.

Jones, who is scheduled to attend junior days at Notre Dame and Ohio State this weekend, will receive in-school visits from members of the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes’ coaching staffs.

Auburn, North Carolina and South Carolina representatives also plan to spend time on Thursday with the 6-foot, 180-pound receiver.

I have never been as optimistic as some have made me out to be. I have always said it will take between 4 and 25 years to get back to the level Tuberville had us at. Changing a head coach is a real crap shoot. That is why I favored just changes on the offensive staff. Obviously we needed a new OC, and I believe we could have used a new receivers coach. I would have also sent Ensminger on his way. Those are the only changes I would have made on the staff.

Anyway...AT&T gets excellent reception in Birmingham and Gadsden. Of course Verizon does too. My opinion is this. AT&T has better plans due to the rollover option and much cooler phones . Verizon has better coverage in many areas. They both are the devil though.

If Sprint had better phones and coverage, their SERO and unlimited everything plans are the best.

Videos look good on it as well, but I haven't explored the musical part of it yet. Personally I'm holding out for Bluetooth A2DP support.

Zteve:
We had a top 10 recruiting class in early September because (a) we had 25 committs when most everyone else was still in single digits, and (2) our season hadn't entered full meltdown mode yet. If we had attempted to maintain status quo we wouldn't be any better off in terms of 'crootin' rankings than we are now - in fact I'd wager we would be worse, because I doubt any OC hire by Tubs would be as impressive as Malzahn.

Sorry Barkley..just saw your post.

I am an Apple guy. I've had the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G. I'm a little underwhelmed with the 3G because I don't really think it was that much of an upgrade. With that said, I don't see anything out there that is better at this point. The Blackberry Storm (Verizon) reviews are mixed. Nobody has done a touch screen that is better than the iPhone.

I am intrigued by the Palm Pre' but will not switch to Sprint...no matter how good their plans are.

I've had several Treo's and Blackberries over the past few years. I usually get tired of them and give them to my sister. I've had the iPhone longer than any though.

As I said above in a previous post.....I think AT&T has somewhat better plans due to rollover, and much better phones. However, Verizon's coverage is better.

And the others (Sprint, T-Mobile, etc) are way down the list, IMO.

9:42 PM

FearlessFreep, it would have surprised me to have seen Tuberville pick Malzahn. As things stand now, comparing the existing coaches, we don't have as good of a staff as we did a year ago. Steve..I agree with your coaching opinions. If we can dramatically improve the WR position, we can take pressure off the OL/QB.

One positive regarding the new coaches is that the cronic naysayers will be quiet for a few years, our national perception will slowly improve and that may help recruiting. Of course if we aren't on top in 3-4 years, the PTB will be ready for a change and in predictable fashion, start leaking rumors and inuendo in order to manipulate the naysayers to scream for change.

Changing offenses is pointless unless you're willing to change those who coach it.

Btw, it won't take us 4 to 25 years to get back either. It took Dye 2, Tot 1, and Tubs 2 in far worse conditions.
Besides, I don't want us to get back to Tubs level anyways because I am not satisfied averaging 4 to 5 losses a year.

Verizon and Alltell best coverage hands down. Customer service blows with both, pay too much with Verizon, Alltel's phone choices leave alot to be desired

AT&T Coverage is pretty good, customer service better but still leaves alot to be desired. Good phone choices

Everyone else, coverage is terrible. But prices are better and from what I hear customer service is better.

1) When I refresh the HABOTN blogger page, it stays where I was on the page before, instead of going to the top like on Firefox, or asking me if I want to load the unsecure parts of the page and going to the top like on IE. (which is huge)

2) I don't have to click on file then new tab, there is a little plus allowing me to open a new tab (I don't ever seem to remember the shortcut for this)

I'm not sure those make up for the slowness of the browser.

Tubs had us too ten because we had anywhere from 10 to 15 more guys committed than everyone else. It was strictly a numbers issue. And besides, if you really do go by these rankings, you'll notice that the average player ratings have stayed about the same. That's all you can ask from a staff that started behind the 8 ball.

10:08 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Nall is old school like Nikki ... Gran was Tubby's true love ... Ensminger is the wild card like Margene.

It appeared to me the staff was dysfunctional ... just like the show appears to be (my wife is a religious viewer of it, I'm really not) because it's impossible to hold it all together.

ZteveFC, I think this staff is huge improvement over what we had. I saw a staff that lacked enthusiasm and direction. Look at lasts years situation. Better coaches would not have let that situation occur.

My feeling is this years team will do much better than most expect.

BTW-I have Alltel service and the coverage is great. My wife and daugher have ATT and they drop calls everywhere. I went bythe local store and was told they have no service (no tower)in Tallassee nor around Lake Matin. I thought we were in 2009, how does this happen.

I reallylike the my circle with Alltel. However, when Verizon assumes full control over all contracts, they will not continue the My Cirlce deal once your two year agreement is over. FYI

THT - I've got a Wilson antenna and booster for my cell phone and computer at my remote farm. I usually don't have a signal at all inside the house, but when I hook up to the booster I have 5 bars. It definitely works very well.

I've had Unicel for several years, and they actually have the best service of any GSM technology carrier in AL. They will let you roam off any GSM tower; everybody else has restrictions. Unfortunately, Verizon bought Unicel too, so all of my phones and my computer card will soon be useless. Verizon uses a different technology; I don't know if I'll continue to be able to get a signal at the farm or not.

The booster works.

Tubs had us 10 due to numbers as well as the quality of recruits. We have lost and continue to lose some good recruits. While everyone wanted to complain about them early because they didnt have many high profile offers we see now that the other programs are knocking their doors down. dont down play or underestimate xCTT and staff's ability to spot talent.

No one is downplaying tubs, but we still wouldve dropped due to other teams filling their classes. Its called simple math. Our player average has actually stayed about the same which really is the best way to gauge it.

Yes Jay, they are called repeaters.

10:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Allen, in 2006 and 2007 we had top 10 recruiting classes. If Tuberville had stayed, this years class would have likely been in the top 15.

10:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUBigCat, good point. This class has lost the high profile recruits. Maybe Chizik will pick up some high profile recruits to replace them, but that is to be seen. So far, it hasn't looked good.

10:22 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Tubs did know talent and could evaluate it very well.

The problem was, is that the only way he would evaluate them the last couple years is if those players attended our camps which not all recruits could do.

10:22 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Allen, he traveled all over the country. I am not sure what else you would expect.

10:24 PM
Blogger Alan said...

When you figure in the attrition of those two classes, they are not even top 20 Stephen.

10:24 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We are getting into a pointless discussion. Chizik is the coach and we should all stand behind him. He should get at least 4 years to turn things around. A west title within the next 7 or 8 years would be expected too.

10:25 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Yea Alan I agree we would have dropped I just dont think we would have dropped 20 spots. last I heard we were #30.

I question some of this staff's recruiting decisions but ultimatly they get a pass this year. Next year will be the test.

10:27 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Look, I love tubs and all he did for Auburn. He is a great man. But for some reason or another he lost his desire and energy to compete with the big boys and he knew it. That's why all parties involved moved on.

10:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay,

I think a booster and a repeater are the same thing.

Most cell phone stores have repeaters on their premises. Thats why you always have perfect service inside.

10:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Tuberville got sick of being questioned about his job every year. It is what turned the Auburn job into an unattractive position on the national scale.

10:29 PM
Blogger Alan said...

If chiz can't sniff a west title in 7 or 8 years, he won't be around too long.

10:29 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Alan the camps worked. Outside of the WR position, there was nothing wrong with the talent we had. And since we didnt throw the ball much, the WR position didnt have a real opportunity to develop as quick as the others.

10:30 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Alan is spot on. I looked back at those classes and who has not only contributed, but who is still at school or even playing ball. I liked Tubbs and expected him to stay around, but was disheartened by his seemingly lacks approach to recruiting. Maybe he didn't like to make a lot of noise in the public (old school style) but the perception was he didn't 'get it'. And as FSJ pointed out a coule of days ago, perception is reality.

10:30 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Steve,
Don't think for a second that tubs didn't also play a role in his name being mentioned every other year also. It went both ways.

10:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

FSJ, you are right about that. Cell service is largely a crap shoot. I have Alltel, and the service isn't great here in Columbia, and I can see a cell tower from my apartment.

10:31 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Do you guys really think it will take 7-8 years to compete a west title?

10:32 PM
Blogger michael said...

With the staff letting so ,any 3 stars walk, I get the feeling the plan is to not waste scholarships in a hard to recruit year like this and land some big time players next year. I think the new staff might be cocky and thinks we are better than some of these guys, and everyone will see it after this year.

I may be way off on this, though

10:32 PM
Blogger Alan said...

I agee with you on that bigcat for the most part until these last couple of classes where some bad evaluations and attrition kicked our butts. So by using that logic, you must agree that we can turn it around in a year or two?

10:33 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Michael I sorta think that is their plan as well. Now all they have to do is win about 8 games next year for it to work.

10:34 PM
Blogger wtc said...

If that's all we can expect then why did we get rid of Tubbs? I expect to be a good team in '09 and pushing for top honors in the conference no later than 2011. AU has some very good players. A new sheriff in town will help get them ready to play. My expectations are high, but if they weren't, why play the game?

wtc,

Tuberville didn't have to work to hard at recruiting when Shula was around. Shula is actually in Mobile this week for the Senior Bowl or whatever it is called. The joke on Alabama boards is that this is the first time Shula has ever been to Mobile.

However, Meyer being at UF, Saban at Alabama, Miles at LSU, & Richt at UGA really squeezed Tuberville to a degree on the recruiting front. It didn't seem like he had the fire in the belly to work at it like you have to nowadays.

10:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tubs was reluctant to fix the Qb and WR coaching. He didn't understand offense as well as would be preferred. All else was OK. Just because the coaches didn't wear Oakleys and backwards hats doesn't mean they didn't have fire. Bear Bryant had 2 consecutive 6-5 years even though he was outcheating everyone. Sometimes the wheels fall off for a season or 2.

This was a bad year to change coaches and nationally we weren't perceived as giving CTT time to regroup. Our recruiting competitors will get mileage out of that next year also.

10:38 PM
Blogger Alan said...

I'm looking at 7 to 9. There is gonna be a lot of close games for us next year and we can't take any games off though. That should make for an exciting and also interesting season.

10:39 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Alan dont forget to add injuries to attrition and bad evals. I really need more time to get to know this staff and what they will do on and off the field. I think they can turn this around in 2 years if our offense becomes exciting and productive again. the problem with that is if it happens, Malzahn will be a HC in year 3.

10:39 PM
Blogger wtc said...

That is why I am stoked about this staff. Without a big name HC, and last years performance being used against them they are at least sackin' up going after some kids that could help us. I recall an article by the ESPN recruiting guy early int he year say that AU was ranked high becasue of sheer numbers, but expected them to fall from where they were because other schools would catching up and the AU was getting the lower rated players.

10:42 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Tubs wasn't in it and as long as he was there, our rivals would use the tubs wants out or we want him gone mantra each year to their fullest recruiting advantage. This problem wouldve have persisted as long as tubs was here be it our daily or his and his agents fault. I was tired of that game each and every offseason. No time is good to look for a coach, but the change was inevitable.

10:43 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

7-9 wins seems like a stretch to me. Not only is this staff new, the HC aint use to winning as an HC. I'm gonna give him the benefit of not putting holding expectation of wins over his head. If he actually can manage this team and staff effectively for a season and show improvement on the field from game to game, I will take that as a huge victory.

10:44 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Our fault, not daily. Lol.

I agree with that bigcat.

10:46 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I think many of us think the parts are greater than the sum right now. Several of these coaches have very good resumes. They just have to be allowed to 'do that voodoo that they do'.

If they weren't winners, I suspect we would have heard alot of crowing from other parts of the state and SEC. No one is afraid of this staff yet, but they are taking notice of what theya re doing.

10:46 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Still say 7 to 9 though. We take all ooc games plus at least 3 SEC games I think.

10:48 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Well I just look at the players we had going into '08 and AU was picked to challenge if not win the west title and severla had media types had us winning in ATL. I thought that was a stretch but liked being a front runner. These did nto forget how to play ball overnight. I think we haven't realized the trouble caused by letting the OC go. That was just devastating to the team. IMO

10:50 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Alan, who do we play in conference this year?

10:51 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Wtc,
Anything that couldve gone wrong in 08, did.
Bad coaching, injuries, defections, team turmoil, etc.

10:52 PM
Blogger Alan said...

Hopefully a new staff will give these so called duds on our team a new lease on life.

We play the usual west plus UK, UT, and UGA.

10:55 PM

Most recruiting junkies don't realize the relativly mediocre success rate of the high rated recruits. CTT went to the "camp" method in an attempt to assess the chances for recruit success. Last summer/early fall's recruits were maligned by recruting junkies and now those same recruits are sought after. CTT would have been able to keep them. In fact, our new coaches seem to want to keep most of them.

Claiming CTT was lazy is probably either the result of that particular fan's laziness or just sucking up the PTB spin through the rumor mill.

10:55 PM
Blogger wtc said...

You're right. That is why I think we will much improved over '08.

Injuries are a huge factor. Ask FSJ about them. Even thogh A Smith wasn't injured, when he went out the talent level went down. When M. Johnson goes out, they really fell off. That did not happen all year for them, but when it did, bad things start to happen. Even FL struggled at times when Harvin was out. That position was one that could be replaced much easier than the up front guys.

10:57 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Hoopie, he just caught up in a conference that did it different and a major portion of the fanbase did not think he was putting in the effort. Now that may or may not be right but that is they way many thought of it. You just have to look at what you have as your benchmark and that benchmark has moved.

7 to 9 wins next season sounds reasonable. That is what I was guessing. We should do about the same in 2010 and likely decline the following couple of year. Hopefully we will contend for the west by around 2014.

Looking at the schedule, it is conceivable we could lose as many as 7 next season, but I doubt it. I expect to see a lot of improvement with our quarterbacks and hopefully with our receivers.

Good Morning, Hotties! I don't understand why some of you (esp. Steve who is usually full of sunshine!) are so worried about recruiting for next season. I think the new staff is doing the best they can with the time they have. I still think we will see a much-improved team in '09. That's all for which we can hope (that's for Monica! LOL) right now. When the staff has a full recruiting season in front of them, I'm sure they will land some big time recruits.

Jay - I'm not sure if the "booster" I was talking about is the same as a repeater. The term that Wilson uses is "amplifier." Here's an address to what they have:

http://www.wilsonelectronics.com////Products.php?Type=B

I have the Direct Connection Amplifier System, but its not cool enough for the Hotties. All of you would no doubt need the In-building Wireless Amplifier. I've had mine for several years, and the direct connection was all they made back then.

It would cost you several hundred to set up a wireless system for your home, but if the paper won't pay for it, at least you could count it off on your taxes.

I know waaaayyy more about cell phones than I want to know. I absolutely had to have an internet connection at my farm, and I spent many hours trying to figure out how to get it.

I hope Verizon doesn't ruin it; I'm not optimistic when so many people say they are the devil.
