Florida @ Auburn, 2nd half
We're live blogging the second half of Auburn's home game against Florida.
- FINAL STATS
Shooting
AUB 25-64 (39.1%)
FLA 25-63 (39.7%)
3 Shooting
AUB 5-27 (18.5%)
FLA 5-23 (21.7%)
FT Shooting
AUB 10-21 (47.6%)
FLA 13-19 (68.4%)
Rebounds
AUB 36 (10o 26d)
FLA 46 (14o 32d) - FOURTH TO @ 3:33
Florida leads, 57-55. Rasheem Barrett has come out of nowhere to scored the Tigers' last seven points. Florida guard Erving Walker hit back-to-back threes just a second ago -- the second was from at least 25 feet -- and that mitigated Barrett's surge. Very competitive game. - THIRD TO @ 7:43
Game tied at 48. Auburn ties the game, then starts taking ill-advised shots again. They're not used to being in this position. - FLORIDA CALLS TO @ 9:21
Game tied at 48. The Gators have lost all offensive flow. Even Calathes looks confused, so Billy Donovan called a timeout. Tay Waller finally hit a three-point shot (at the 11:13 mark) and this place came alive. - SECOND TO @ 11:32
Florida leads, 48-41. Auburn has created some turnovers with aggressive defensive play, but then the team gets too hyped and makes careless mistakes trying to force a fast-break situation. Way too much pace on the Tigers' offensive plan right now. Florida playing only acceptably; nothing more. - FIRST TO @ 15:57
Florida leads, 44-38. Auburn is passing more thoughtfully so far. Florida has been sloppier than expected, but it's early. - HALFTIME
Florida leads, 40-34.

.... is number one
aww you're the best, Mom! WDE
So what's happening with you today? South Carolina has turned into a frozen wasteland. No snow but very cold!
#5, Karsten Bailey!!!!!!!
the boys are hanging in there. keep taking the ball to the hole Vot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's wicked cold here, Mom. Low of Zero tomorrow night! No snow yet, but we'll probably get a little.
WDE Scottie!
Where is Jay relative to Billy Donovan?
Monica,
What have you read about the Daphne QB Cooper...Do you know if we offered him? It is a big what hay down here. No one can believe it.
Anthony Mix...
We do not have any play makers sounds like I am talking about football but I mean basketball..
I'm along the baseline on Florida's end.
I think they offered him a grey shirt didn't they? And they didn't recruit him as a QB. I'll double check that.
-10 here tonight. Glad I don't live up here.
wow... 2-19 from 3... and less than 50% from the charity stripe... not getting it done...
This game is heating up.
Jay you have on a jacket? Toyota table?
TIED!
Thanks MillerTime for the congrats... but unfortunately that was the year before I was on the team.
LOL Big Mike! Repin' AU in the snow. Great picture!
Yeow!.....we're headed for single digits in the No. Ga. Mtns. Water pipes are gonna bust.
Good weekend to build a fire and assemble tax records.
tied ball game! I'm getting it on tv now :)
I have a jacket on, yep. Pink tie.
Florida has the ugliest uniforms in the history of basketball
Thanks for the info....The circle I run with has been giving me the blues over this. Cooper is claiming that he is coming in as QB which makes me wander what have they seen that no other D1 school has???
Yep Mon, goes over real well at Purdue.
i scream you scream we all scream for...
AUBURN!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
Is Tony Franklin helping with the basketball team? It's unbelievable how many points we can't score.
an Auburn victory sure would be a nice prelude to 'Damages'!
Ice Cream!!!
Cowboy - He's 6'4", 205 and runs close to a 4.5 40 - some are thinking put him in at everything from LB, SS, TE to WR.
That's a good quote, Phred!
B2B 3's!
You're always stylin, Jay G.
Take mine down Jay G ... it's time for something fresh.
Jet-
Great idea. I'll go do my daily scoop it out workout routine right now.
The Department of Homeland Security has issued a warning that Auburn will be shooting free throws and that all citizens should take cover
Is that a code orange and blue?
Code Blue ... definitely, Code Blue
Chizik's first commit, Izauea Lanier. Anybody know anything about him?
Ball game
Kathy, he's definitely an "under the radar" kid. Good golly, is he under the radar ...
Ball game indeed.
Ugh. AU really needs to pull this one out to offset the miserable showing by the Pens tonight.
This may require an extra scoop to soothe my aching heart.
It looks like Chiz has his 1st commitment of 2009.
Izauea Lanier 2*
6-1 WR
4.5/40
WOW awful.
i miss being good at basketball
It's choke city, no doubt.
Auburn can't finish.
I am inventing a new vacuum cleaner. It's called "The Lebo ... it sucks like nothing you've ever seen."
Does he let them actually shoot the ball in practice or do we just work on defense?
Halfway decent shooting wins that game by 10 or 15. I detest Lebo as a basketball coach. Great X's and O's guy my butt. Great X's and O's would have won that game.
LEBO must GO
the entire bball coaching staff AND team need to be fired for bricking so many FTs. There's just no excuse for that.
well, that's not a strong finish to game at all. <_<
Yall hear the bob stoops cereal joke?
not yet
This time can't shoot poorly and expect anything but loss after loss.
The only time I remember being good at basketball was in the early 80s with Drew(?) Persons and the Round Mound of Rebound who shall remain further nameless.
Why does bob stoops eat his cereal off of a plate?
Why Bin?
Because he chokes with bowls?
If it's in a bowl he'll lose it.
Okay ... I'm over it now. But looking at Lebo still makes me throw up in my mouth a little.
Thanks Geezy.
that was chuck persons. if i remember correctly, barkley, then persons were back to back nba rookies of the year. good times, then. miss me some sonny smith.
that was a disappointment
jhag, how do you know Izauea Lanier? What about him bothers you?
The new arena should help. Poor facilities + football school = a tough environment for anyone. I'm not a Lebo fan, but trying to be fair.
Jeff Lebo will never be a winner. Never. You hear me? Not EVER.
He could have the ten best basketball players in the whole wide world and I'm pretty sure he would finish below .500. "Sucks" is not even the right word for him. What he does is way beyond "sucks". He's like a black hole.
HE WILL NEVER BE WORTH A CRAP!!!! AAAGGGHHH!!! Loser. Sucks. Pitiful. Terrible. Awful.
I think I'm melting.
Damages. Tar I knew you'd want a reminder.
Steve i was reffering to the free throw shooting and coaching of Lebo when i said "WOW, Awful" but i donno if i can say anything better about Lanier.
"HE WILL NEVER BE WORTH A CRAP!!!! AAAGGGHHH!!! Loser. Sucks. Pitiful. Terrible. Awful." = Not so much Zen
10-21 from the stripe (47.6%) AWFUL!!!
If they shoot 60% from the charity stripe, they win the game.
5-27 from beyond the arc didn't help either.
Lebo is about as good at coaching Free Throws as Greg Knox was at coaching proper route running.
Here's some Zen for ya ... In order to quit sucking you must be rid of that which sucks.
Lebo sucks. This is not a new theme for me. Ask somebody.
Mon- I am far away from the TV, but thanks for the warning.
Scout shows I Lanier 2* chose AU over Miss St, KY, and Troy offers
meow
In order to quit sucking, you must remove the sucker...
yeah... that was bad
I'll take the minority opinion ... he's a fabulous coach ... but he's a like an expert surgeon, dumped into a county health clinic. It just doesn't work.
If Jeff Lebo is at top 20 program, he wins. At Auburn, where you have to be creative, he can't get it done.
I like him, but he's not what we need.
Free throws isn't coaching ... it's what's between the ears of the young man at the line.
Jet! What? I hope you are saying that just for the sake of argument. Lebo couldn't win at any program. Period. He couldn't win if he had Kobe, LeBron and Michael Jordan.
bull... a good coach will at least show improvement...
And yes, FT's are coachable... it's repetition and motion... entirely coachable.
Kobe, LeBron, and MJ would win despite Lebo... but they certainly wouldn't win because of him.
Nope. He would somehow - against all odds - figure out a way to keep them from winning.
I have never understood how there are so many terrible free throw shooters out there. Free throws are all about technique and confidence, practice gives you both of those. I, being a terrible basketball player, shot around 75% in high school.
Looks like neither Randle or Bryce Brown are going to end up visiting. Very humbling, we got our hopes up for nothing.
Looks like we may pull in Tyrik Rollison, but whose to say he's not the next Kodi Burns?
He'll win at his next job ... he just won't win at Auburn. Only one way to win at Auburn with the current situation.
New arena will help ... but Lebo is labeled ... like Tuberville was ... so he's gotta go ... I just have more respect for him than the rest of you.
I have zero skill on a basketball court, but I can shoot FT all day. It's rhythm... practice can get you to at least 60%... shooting below 50% as a team is beyond pathetic!
You're so positive jhag....not
Big Mike did I say anything wrong?
Just facing reality unlike some peeps.
Our long term hoops tradition: If Basketball were football, then we would be Vanderbilt.
...makes sense to me.
Jhag ... we got 3 weeks ... and we get a chance to coach 'em up, too. It ain't panic time. Chin up, buckeroo.
Nah jhag...just the way you see things.
The same news stated with a bit more positive light >>
...woooo hoooo looks like we might get Tyrik Rollison, can't wait to see him perform.
I don't have any disrespect for Lebo as a person. But, the guy is not a good coach. He's not a recruiter, he doesn't recruit needs, he has yet to develop a single player beyond what they were when they arrived... he has not shown that he's good with X/O's or motivation or concentration.
Agreed, well I'm used to Tubbs recruiting i guess thats why i expect mediocrity my appologies.
I was excited to see Kodi perform back in the day as well though. just sayin'
Lebo was 40-20 at Chattanooga.
I'd like to see Barkley coach. Now that's entertainment!
I have actually always been impressed with how hard Lebo's teams have played.
But for whatever reason, our talent / performance level- be that the same players getting better, or more talented players coming to the program- just doesn't seem to be happening.

Sell your Apple stock. Every time he leaves they tank.
Fake Bill Gates?
Is it time for Point Guard on a Stick?
So...I have a bit of a dilemma....and this is totally OT
In case you haven't heard...the real Steve Jobs took a leave from Apple today due to health issues. I'm wondering if it is cool to keep the Fake Steve Jobs name or if it would be better if I changed...
If I should, any suggestions?
Sorry guys..had a typo..I'm anal..
I would sell Apple and buy in a week or so.
It will take a beating tomorrow.
Time for Gannett Executives on a Stick.
I've enjoyed it ... but it would be time for me to head to rack.
Beat Bama.
jhag, I also despise mediocrity and was never a Tubbs fan because of that very mentality. Even in the face of a daunting task there is no reason to not be positive and completely supportive.
You could be the Fake Kim Jung Il... I hear there are about 10 of them.
Fake Denny Crane?
I talked with a friend of mine who works for the Gannett rag in Hattiesburg. She thinks she'll be able to take off 5 Fridays instead of having to take a week off. I hope it works out for you Mr. Jay G Tate.
Where do we send those donations?
LOL MillerTime
FSH=FDC
Another Dawg, Rashad Jones, is probably going to declare for the tomorrow (the last day to do it). One thing about mediocrity is that it doesn't leave early.
Friday's are my least productive days at work... I need the HABOTN on Friday... how about... Tuesdays?
Declare for the NFL
astatguy...
Excellent observation.
Any chance Marks decides to change his mind and stay?
What motivation would Marks have to stay?
I could see a remote possibility Powers decides to stay (but I bet he has already had contact with a agent making all talks mute), he isn't a definite draft pick. Marks is guaranteed good money.
This year seems to be unique in how many underclassmen are coming out. I wonder if it's an anomaly or a trend.
Marks could be a Rd 2 guy this year... but with a healthy season could be a solid 1st rounder next year.
FSJ -->TTF
tolerable tide fan
anomaly related to NFL rookie salary rules going into effect for next year's draft
I thought the NFL said that wasn't going to happen.
I'd rather just take a full week and be done with it. I can collect unemployment for that week (insane that it has come to this) and recoup my losses in other ways.
Perhaps I can get a guest blogger to handle biz while I'm out.
As much as I love you all and the HABOTN, I don't think it's right to work for free.
astat- i'll assume you are correct. i've not ben keeping up
I agree Jay..
Don't blog for free....I think you should have a guest blogger for each day...
With you 100% Jay ... You have to do what is best for Jay G and your family! Would hate to not be able to check in but I agree with your "no free work" philosophy.
I would have watched the game, but our WB or whatever it's called today gets the Raycom game, so they tape delay it at 11:00, because people need their 90210 and celebrity gossip shows.
Sounds like fundamentals killed us again.
I also think the female hotties would be good guest bloggers....
The Auburn/Alabama or Alabama/Auburn basketball game should be a real treat this year...An exercise in futility on both sides.
Don't work for free Jay G... stay home, and work on those Guitar Hero tracks...
when is that game Fake KJI?
goodnight everyone
WDE
1/17 in Auburn..
3/3 in Tuscaloosa
Jay, you should continue blogging for the week but take out all links to the advertiser so that they don't get any money off of ya.
If you don't want to come up with stuff, feel free to go to my blog and copy and paste some nonsense.
michael...
you have a blog?
Some of your fans here would be thrilled to hear that...
I don't get it
I'm not sure what's happening, but if you're being furloughed, Jay, you shouldn't work for free. I personally would like to see you use the time to start writing a book about Auburn sports. My favorite is War Eagle, by Clyde Bolton, but it's pretty old now.
Perhaps it's time to follow Phillip Marshall's lead and go to the web. We know you're good at running a blog.
astat...I agree
Jay needs to start a pay site..He'd make a killing.
Jay...Don't work for free. Would it have any affect if we all skipped out the same week? Does the blog generate any revenue for MA through ads? I think we could all agree to meet at a different site to show our support.
Would posting on FB be considered working? We wouldn't even have to discuss sports. We could cover your fashion hotties and notties from the coming award show season.
Of course, Kicker on a Stick would still be on the table.
Man...just had to bust open a 40 for Ricardo Montalban. Lots of memories of fine Corinthian leather...

Peter Frankenschmidt does not believe in paying for internet content.
Guest blogging isn't against my moral code... :-)
Jay G ... what in the world are you talking about?
FSJ ... you can be Phake Phred
Hey Jay, saw you responded to me in the other thread. Everything is going pretty well, it has been hectic the past two months, but don't fret, I check your site everyday. Now that things have calmed down, I will be posting a whole lot more. For better or worse.
Hope all is still going well, we need a HABOTN drink extravaganza next time I'm in the gump.
So neither Randle or Brown will pay a visit to Auburn. But we're getting commitments from 2* and offering a 1*... Looks like on our way to the 5 stars we tripped and fell in a black hole.
Oh, I forgot to say... Good morning Hotties!!!
WARRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
Free Throws: AUB 10-21 (47.6%)
Is that even possible? Did Shaq or Ben Wallace shoot all of our free throws?
Shaq could shoot a better FT % than Lebo's team.
I have to agree with those of you that think Lebo should go. How long has been there now and this is the product he keeps producing? I know Nell hasn't been there as long as him and look what she has done.

When Auburn hired Gene Chizik to take over the football program, I made a conscious decision to be supportive. When the critics came out, I defended Auburn as an institution and said that we can't hold the Iowa State record against Gene Chizik. As Chizik began to assemble his staff (some of which I was excited about, some I wasn't, and some I didn't know), I took the wait-and-see approach and attitude. However, after taking a step back, I now feel an overwhelming sense of dread when it comes to this program's near future.
I feel this way because each and every day, I have to convince myself that this hire makes sense. I have to put aside the understanding that the interesting staff he has put together will not be together very long as most of these coaches have dreams of upward movements. I realize that though Auburn has gone after some major recruits (which is a refreshing change of pace), most of them will go to school and play elsewhere leaving Auburn to work with what is here. I realize that the holes in Auburn’s offense are not so much about the scheme as about the lack of playmaking ability. Now, teams win all the time without explosive offense. Those teams usually sport a dominating defense. Auburn’s defense, for all it is, is far from dominating at this point. As a matter of fact, it’s mighty thin. The whole team is thin in positions where it is bad to be thin.
To the offense, Gus Malzhan may be able to disguise the lack of playmakers with some scheme. He’s done this before (though I would argue he had a few playmakers on that Tulsa team) and Auburn is used to this kind of attack – they’ve done it for years. The loss of some players on defense creates immediate need for young, inexperienced players to move into starting/major contributing roles immediately. This rarely works unless there are some clear cut leaders on the field and Auburn, sadly, doesn’t have a ton of those right now. What Auburn has are some good (character) players who work hard and do what they are told. That puts the pressure on those doing the telling and the jury is way out on those folks right now. Neither Ted Roof nor Gene Chizik’s recent resumes suggest that the defense will be dominating. However, they can coach as evidenced by their longevity in the profession.
I suppose the point of this is after taking off the orange and blue glasses, I believe the best Auburn can hope for is to maintain some kind of balance with all of this. Perhaps that is the point of the Chizik hire after all. In five years or so, the SEC coaching landscape should be very different. Perhaps Auburn was just trying for the safe hire. A hire that wouldn’t put the school or program in jeopardy, but one that also would not bring in championships. Fair or not, Chizik will be judged by whether or not he can overcome a poor head coaching record and how well he can match up against the SEC’s elite cadre of coaches.
Only time will tell this tale.
I have no idea what to expect from this football team next season. I keep telling myself that the O can't be worse than last season. I think the majority of the problem was the "chemistry" issue among the staff which transferred to the team. Hopefully with everyone on the same page we can at least score 20 points a game which should keep us in most games. AU still has a little talent on D and Chizik probably hasn't gotten too stupid since his good D-co years.
Sensi- please continue to spread your gloomy forecast. I'll buy into it, thereby lowering my expectations tremendously. Only then can Auburn have a great season, assuming we follow historical trends.
R.I.P. Ricardo Montalban. "Smiles everyone..."
Do I think we win the SEC West next year? No. Do I think we show significant improvement and field a team that actually looks like it's been coached and wants to be in the stadium? Yes.
Is Chizik the guy to take us back to glory? I don't know, but I'm cautiously optimistic. I really think that if his blueprint of taking less money for the HC and bringing in top assistants and paying them well works, it could redefine the college football landscape.
I expect to see significant improvement in player attitudes and effort next year. I think there will be some big surprises from kids that we've written off. Or as Julius and Bertier put it in Remember The Titans:
Big Ju: You got a job?
Bertier: I've got a job.
Big Ju: You been doing your job?
Bertier: I've been doing my job.
Big Ju: Then why don't you tell your white buddies to block for Rev better? Because they have not blocked for him worth a blood nickel, and you know it! Nobody plays. Yourself included. I'm supposed to wear myself out for the team? What team? Nah, nah what I'm gonna do is look out for myself and I'ma get mine.
Bertier: See man, that's the worst attitude I ever heard.
Big Ju: Attitude reflects leadership, captain.
I think the Auburn Tigers attitude and performance over the last few years is a direct reflection of the leadership at the top.
War Eagle.
I agree J-Z. Even if it was not out in the open i'm sure the players could sense the dissention among the coaches. I also hope that everyone will be busting it trying to impress the new staff for PT. I remember reading an interview from Montez where he was talking about not diving for balls at practice. Hopefully that attitude will change as well.
Here is a great UNDERCLASSMEN TRACKER for those following players deciding to go pro or stay put.
Sensi,
Morning! Did you wake up on the right side of bed this am?
Feeling a little outspoken and mellifluous?
I just still have that wait and attitude still until we see the product on the field.
Chizik picks up his first commitment for 2009 Class:
IZAUEA LANIER
Athlete
Gordo (AL) Gordo
Ht: 6-foot-1
Wt: 185 lbs
Forty: 4.5 secs
mel=honey
fluere= to flow
mellifluous 1 : having a smooth rich flow (a mellifluous voice)
2 : filled with something (as honey) that sweetens
Mobilz, thanks for teaching this ignorant Hottie a new word; even better, a new word I can use in front of family;-)
Can the HABOTN join the financial sector, auto manufacturers, porn industry, and town of Edwardsville, AL in asking the federal government for a bailout package? Furlough Week 2009 will need to be subsidized.
hooray for new words.
Mornin', HOTTIES.
I'm working up a new post now -- getting caught up after yesterday's Gannett-related "excitement". Shouldn't be long.
THT,
You're welcome... thought i would put something positive into the fray today on the H.A.B.O.T.N!
Good morning Jay GT! I'll probably be too busy with work to annoy Peter with a useless "1" on your new post, but I'll try to catch up later in the day.
AU has not had significant on field leadership since 04. I really hope we can find a few players who want to be leaders this year. I agree with you as well, attitude reflects leadership. If the coaches lead and exhibit a unified front, then the players attitude will reflect that and we'll see a more unified team.
Do I think Chizik is the answer to all things Auburn Football? No, most likely not. I am still going to give the team my support until I am given a legit reason to complain (I will always support the team regardless).
I don't expect to win the SEC next year. My expectations lay more at the feat of player development and demonstrating improvement from the beginning of the season to the end.
I think players like Airon Savage, Bynes and AC need to step up on the defensive side of the ball and be vocal leaders and lead by example. A QB has got to emerge as a leader on the O side. There was too much made out of the QB controversy by Franklin and Tubs last year and caused player loyalty to be split. There has to be more team unity if the team hopes to be successful.
It all starts with leadership from the coaches, then trickles down to a few players stepping up as leaders. Attitude reflects leadership. Who will lead this team? That's what I want to see
This comment has been removed by the author.
I, for one, think Coach Chiz should lock all the players in a room and make them watch Remember the Titans until they get it.
After all of the hype about us pursuing top flight blue chip players, I can't believe that Chiz's first recruit is a 2 star player. Don't we already have plenty of players that have to be coached up? I am ready for some players that don't have to be coached up.
j-z if my love for you was never verbalized before, let me now and forever more remove all doubt!! Anytime someone can so artfully reference a quote from that movie he's a Hall of Famer in my book!
Sensi - I sport my orange and blue glasses most days. I think I look good in mine. But I feel that if we are going to be successful on the level we all want, it will be through hard work, great coaching, and a few really good playmakers in key positions. I hope that is the formula we are trying to use.
I like the Lanier recruit. Yea he's a 2* and most of us had these visions of Chiz and Trooper leading 5* to the Plains like the pide piper but I dont see that happening. Lanier was almost a 1000 yard rusher and receiver (around 870 for each). He's tall, pretty fast and I think we are recruiting him for defense.
AUBigcat
You may be right about Lanier; however, he will be up against much better competition in the SEC than at Gordo High School. I don't think that you will see those kind of numbers at AU. Even on defense, he will see speed like he has never seen before. I hope that you are right, I really do. WDE
Sensi ... hang in there, buddy.
My "5 Star" Manifesto:
1. I expect Auburn teams to pull together in the same direction and NEVER be out-worked, out-hit, or out-hustled.
2. I expect Auburn teams to HATE BAMA with the same intensity and fervor that I do.
3. I expect Auburn to embrace high expectations -- Auburn preferring the underdog role irritates me to no end.
4. I expect Auburn coaches to be held accountable for the players they recruit/don't recruit. This is not based on "stars" (which I don't care about one bit) but what the players do on the field.
5. I expect Auburn to be in the hunt for the SEC Championship Game every year.
Anon I agree that he will definately see a different level of competition from Gordo. I think that he ability to catch and understand offense should help him on the defensive side of the ball. Chiz knows defense so if he thinks Lanier has the goods, I'm will give him the benefit of the doubt. Besides we need the help on the corner/safety position and a tall CB can always come in handy.
Jet I'm co-signing your manifesto!
