Florida @ Auburn, 2nd half

We're live blogging the second half of Auburn's home game against Florida.

  • FINAL STATS

    Shooting
    AUB 25-64 (39.1%)
    FLA 25-63 (39.7%)

    3 Shooting
    AUB 5-27 (18.5%)
    FLA 5-23 (21.7%)

    FT Shooting
    AUB 10-21 (47.6%)
    FLA 13-19 (68.4%)

    Rebounds
    AUB 36 (10o 26d)
    FLA 46 (14o 32d)

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:33
Florida leads, 57-55. Rasheem Barrett has come out of nowhere to scored the Tigers' last seven points. Florida guard Erving Walker hit back-to-back threes just a second ago -- the second was from at least 25 feet -- and that mitigated Barrett's surge. Very competitive game.

  • THIRD TO @ 7:43
Game tied at 48. Auburn ties the game, then starts taking ill-advised shots again. They're not used to being in this position.

  • FLORIDA CALLS TO @ 9:21
Game tied at 48. The Gators have lost all offensive flow. Even Calathes looks confused, so Billy Donovan called a timeout. Tay Waller finally hit a three-point shot (at the 11:13 mark) and this place came alive.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:32
Florida leads, 48-41. Auburn has created some turnovers with aggressive defensive play, but then the team gets too hyped and makes careless mistakes trying to force a fast-break situation. Way too much pace on the Tigers' offensive plan right now. Florida playing only acceptably; nothing more.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:57
Florida leads, 44-38. Auburn is passing more thoughtfully so far. Florida has been sloppier than expected, but it's early.

  • HALFTIME
    Florida leads, 40-34.

Halfway decent shooting wins that game by 10 or 15. I detest Lebo as a basketball coach. Great X's and O's guy my butt. Great X's and O's would have won that game.

Jeff Lebo will never be a winner. Never. You hear me? Not EVER.

He could have the ten best basketball players in the whole wide world and I'm pretty sure he would finish below .500. "Sucks" is not even the right word for him. What he does is way beyond "sucks". He's like a black hole.

I'll take the minority opinion ... he's a fabulous coach ... but he's a like an expert surgeon, dumped into a county health clinic. It just doesn't work.

If Jeff Lebo is at top 20 program, he wins. At Auburn, where you have to be creative, he can't get it done.

I like him, but he's not what we need.

Free throws isn't coaching ... it's what's between the ears of the young man at the line.

9:25 PM
Blogger ADP said...

Jet! What? I hope you are saying that just for the sake of argument. Lebo couldn't win at any program. Period. He couldn't win if he had Kobe, LeBron and Michael Jordan.

9:29 PM
Blogger Miller said...

bull... a good coach will at least show improvement...

And yes, FT's are coachable... it's repetition and motion... entirely coachable.

9:31 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Kobe, LeBron, and MJ would win despite Lebo... but they certainly wouldn't win because of him.

9:31 PM
Blogger ADP said...

Nope. He would somehow - against all odds - figure out a way to keep them from winning.

9:33 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I have never understood how there are so many terrible free throw shooters out there. Free throws are all about technique and confidence, practice gives you both of those. I, being a terrible basketball player, shot around 75% in high school.

9:33 PM
Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

Looks like neither Randle or Bryce Brown are going to end up visiting. Very humbling, we got our hopes up for nothing.
Looks like we may pull in Tyrik Rollison, but whose to say he's not the next Kodi Burns?

9:34 PM
Blogger Jet said...

He'll win at his next job ... he just won't win at Auburn. Only one way to win at Auburn with the current situation.

New arena will help ... but Lebo is labeled ... like Tuberville was ... so he's gotta go ... I just have more respect for him than the rest of you.

9:35 PM

I don't have any disrespect for Lebo as a person. But, the guy is not a good coach. He's not a recruiter, he doesn't recruit needs, he has yet to develop a single player beyond what they were when they arrived... he has not shown that he's good with X/O's or motivation or concentration.

When Auburn hired Gene Chizik to take over the football program, I made a conscious decision to be supportive. When the critics came out, I defended Auburn as an institution and said that we can't hold the Iowa State record against Gene Chizik. As Chizik began to assemble his staff (some of which I was excited about, some I wasn't, and some I didn't know), I took the wait-and-see approach and attitude. However, after taking a step back, I now feel an overwhelming sense of dread when it comes to this program's near future.

I feel this way because each and every day, I have to convince myself that this hire makes sense. I have to put aside the understanding that the interesting staff he has put together will not be together very long as most of these coaches have dreams of upward movements. I realize that though Auburn has gone after some major recruits (which is a refreshing change of pace), most of them will go to school and play elsewhere leaving Auburn to work with what is here. I realize that the holes in Auburn’s offense are not so much about the scheme as about the lack of playmaking ability. Now, teams win all the time without explosive offense. Those teams usually sport a dominating defense. Auburn’s defense, for all it is, is far from dominating at this point. As a matter of fact, it’s mighty thin. The whole team is thin in positions where it is bad to be thin.

To the offense, Gus Malzhan may be able to disguise the lack of playmakers with some scheme. He’s done this before (though I would argue he had a few playmakers on that Tulsa team) and Auburn is used to this kind of attack – they’ve done it for years. The loss of some players on defense creates immediate need for young, inexperienced players to move into starting/major contributing roles immediately. This rarely works unless there are some clear cut leaders on the field and Auburn, sadly, doesn’t have a ton of those right now. What Auburn has are some good (character) players who work hard and do what they are told. That puts the pressure on those doing the telling and the jury is way out on those folks right now. Neither Ted Roof nor Gene Chizik’s recent resumes suggest that the defense will be dominating. However, they can coach as evidenced by their longevity in the profession.

I suppose the point of this is after taking off the orange and blue glasses, I believe the best Auburn can hope for is to maintain some kind of balance with all of this. Perhaps that is the point of the Chizik hire after all. In five years or so, the SEC coaching landscape should be very different. Perhaps Auburn was just trying for the safe hire. A hire that wouldn’t put the school or program in jeopardy, but one that also would not bring in championships. Fair or not, Chizik will be judged by whether or not he can overcome a poor head coaching record and how well he can match up against the SEC’s elite cadre of coaches.

Only time will tell this tale.

I have no idea what to expect from this football team next season. I keep telling myself that the O can't be worse than last season. I think the majority of the problem was the "chemistry" issue among the staff which transferred to the team. Hopefully with everyone on the same page we can at least score 20 points a game which should keep us in most games. AU still has a little talent on D and Chizik probably hasn't gotten too stupid since his good D-co years.

Do I think we win the SEC West next year? No. Do I think we show significant improvement and field a team that actually looks like it's been coached and wants to be in the stadium? Yes.

Is Chizik the guy to take us back to glory? I don't know, but I'm cautiously optimistic. I really think that if his blueprint of taking less money for the HC and bringing in top assistants and paying them well works, it could redefine the college football landscape.

I expect to see significant improvement in player attitudes and effort next year. I think there will be some big surprises from kids that we've written off. Or as Julius and Bertier put it in Remember The Titans:

Big Ju: You got a job?
Bertier: I've got a job.
Big Ju: You been doing your job?
Bertier: I've been doing my job.
Big Ju: Then why don't you tell your white buddies to block for Rev better? Because they have not blocked for him worth a blood nickel, and you know it! Nobody plays. Yourself included. I'm supposed to wear myself out for the team? What team? Nah, nah what I'm gonna do is look out for myself and I'ma get mine.
Bertier: See man, that's the worst attitude I ever heard.
Big Ju: Attitude reflects leadership, captain.

I think the Auburn Tigers attitude and performance over the last few years is a direct reflection of the leadership at the top.

War Eagle.

I agree J-Z. Even if it was not out in the open i'm sure the players could sense the dissention among the coaches. I also hope that everyone will be busting it trying to impress the new staff for PT. I remember reading an interview from Montez where he was talking about not diving for balls at practice. Hopefully that attitude will change as well.

Sensi,

Morning! Did you wake up on the right side of bed this am?

Feeling a little outspoken and mellifluous?

I just still have that wait and attitude still until we see the product on the field.

mellifluous 1 : having a smooth rich flow (a mellifluous voice)
2 : filled with something (as honey) that sweetens

Mobilz, thanks for teaching this ignorant Hottie a new word; even better, a new word I can use in front of family;-)

Can the HABOTN join the financial sector, auto manufacturers, porn industry, and town of Edwardsville, AL in asking the federal government for a bailout package? Furlough Week 2009 will need to be subsidized.

Good morning Jay GT! I'll probably be too busy with work to annoy Peter with a useless "1" on your new post, but I'll try to catch up later in the day.

AU has not had significant on field leadership since 04. I really hope we can find a few players who want to be leaders this year. I agree with you as well, attitude reflects leadership. If the coaches lead and exhibit a unified front, then the players attitude will reflect that and we'll see a more unified team.
Do I think Chizik is the answer to all things Auburn Football? No, most likely not. I am still going to give the team my support until I am given a legit reason to complain (I will always support the team regardless).
I don't expect to win the SEC next year. My expectations lay more at the feat of player development and demonstrating improvement from the beginning of the season to the end.
I think players like Airon Savage, Bynes and AC need to step up on the defensive side of the ball and be vocal leaders and lead by example. A QB has got to emerge as a leader on the O side. There was too much made out of the QB controversy by Franklin and Tubs last year and caused player loyalty to be split. There has to be more team unity if the team hopes to be successful.
It all starts with leadership from the coaches, then trickles down to a few players stepping up as leaders. Attitude reflects leadership. Who will lead this team? That's what I want to see

I, for one, think Coach Chiz should lock all the players in a room and make them watch Remember the Titans until they get it.

After all of the hype about us pursuing top flight blue chip players, I can't believe that Chiz's first recruit is a 2 star player. Don't we already have plenty of players that have to be coached up? I am ready for some players that don't have to be coached up.

j-z if my love for you was never verbalized before, let me now and forever more remove all doubt!! Anytime someone can so artfully reference a quote from that movie he's a Hall of Famer in my book!

Sensi - I sport my orange and blue glasses most days. I think I look good in mine. But I feel that if we are going to be successful on the level we all want, it will be through hard work, great coaching, and a few really good playmakers in key positions. I hope that is the formula we are trying to use.

I like the Lanier recruit. Yea he's a 2* and most of us had these visions of Chiz and Trooper leading 5* to the Plains like the pide piper but I dont see that happening. Lanier was almost a 1000 yard rusher and receiver (around 870 for each). He's tall, pretty fast and I think we are recruiting him for defense.

You may be right about Lanier; however, he will be up against much better competition in the SEC than at Gordo High School. I don't think that you will see those kind of numbers at AU. Even on defense, he will see speed like he has never seen before. I hope that you are right, I really do. WDE

Sensi ... hang in there, buddy.

My "5 Star" Manifesto:

1. I expect Auburn teams to pull together in the same direction and NEVER be out-worked, out-hit, or out-hustled.

2. I expect Auburn teams to HATE BAMA with the same intensity and fervor that I do.

3. I expect Auburn to embrace high expectations -- Auburn preferring the underdog role irritates me to no end.

4. I expect Auburn coaches to be held accountable for the players they recruit/don't recruit. This is not based on "stars" (which I don't care about one bit) but what the players do on the field.

5. I expect Auburn to be in the hunt for the SEC Championship Game every year.

Anon I agree that he will definately see a different level of competition from Gordo. I think that he ability to catch and understand offense should help him on the defensive side of the ball. Chiz knows defense so if he thinks Lanier has the goods, I'm will give him the benefit of the doubt. Besides we need the help on the corner/safety position and a tall CB can always come in handy.

Jet I'm co-signing your manifesto!
