Monday chatter
Hey everyone. Thanks for tuning in Sunday. We had a great day in terms of traffic and it's clear that chasing down recruits on Sunday morning is worthwhile to the HOTTIES.
To paraphrase Brandon Moore: If you're comfortable, I'm comfortable.
I provided the newspaper-style information yesterday. Here are my bloggish insights ... coming from someone who doesn't follow recruiting most of the time.
I'll complete the weekend roll call later.
To paraphrase Brandon Moore: If you're comfortable, I'm comfortable.
I provided the newspaper-style information yesterday. Here are my bloggish insights ... coming from someone who doesn't follow recruiting most of the time.
- John Sullen, OL from Auburn High: Very pleasant, easy-going fellow. He smiles a lot. He was very excited to have gotten his Auburn offer last week and was equally geeked about telling Gene Chizik of his plan to join the Tigers. Sullen's parents were cheery and nice. I like the whole family.
- Anthony Gulley, WR from Brantley: Very country. I initially was surprised to see Gulley paired up with Ryan Pugh and Lee Ziemba last weekend. Then I met Gulley. He's very country. Shy kid, very quiet. He really likes baseball, too, and seems eager to play both football and baseball at Auburn. He's a shortstop by trade. Gulley also can play centerfield.
- Nosa Eguae, DE from suburban Dallas/Ft. Worth: I was really intrigued with this kid. He's the opposite of shy, but he's not a jabberer. He's a confident fellow. My guess is that he will sign with Auburn. Eguae (pronounced "E-gway") committed to Colorado at one point. He later de-committed. He seemed to feel remorseful about doing that, which may explain why he didn't commit to Auburn this weekend. Dee Ford, an Auburn commitment, told reporters that Eguae had committed. It's clear that Eguae was talking about it during the weekend. Ultimately, Eguay left for Texas without making a firm decision.
- Emory Blake, WR from Austin, Texas: Reminded me of Kodi Burns, who was Blake's player host. Blake is a calm guy, very calculating with his words. He is just now warming to the Auburn idea after narrowing his initial list to Texas Tech and Colorado. My guess is that he won't sign with Auburn, but he's at least interested. Blake is all business.
- Brandon Moore, DL from Montgomery: It's clear that he left the Athletic Complex with plans to be diplomatic around reporters. That didn't last long. He basically trashed Auburn for not having a full coaching staff -- Auburn has more coaches than Alabama right now -- and did little to dispel speculation that he'll be choosing between Florida and Alabama. He wants to play defense, though many schools see him as an offensive lineman. He looks like an OT to me.
I'll complete the weekend roll call later.

Ok Jay 'new thread' us!
401
I had never got past 400 before until Johnny Ola took me there. Old Man Roth would never go there, but Johnny goes all the time.
i'm too slow for the lightning quick reflexes of the AUBigCat
Ha THT these old bones dont move like they use to
What's the deal with Aaron Moore decomitting (the OL out of TX)? He was being recruited by Grimes to Colo... Did he not like Grimes and decide to commit when we hired him? Or is there a stated reason?
Maybe we just weren't showing him the love.
I think CGM is going in a different direction with the offensive line. Aaron Moore is 6'2" 250lb. We just committed a kid 80 lbs heavier. Our current OL was the lightest in the SEC. IMHO Auburn backed away. Just my opinion tho.
MAn what is going on with this class?? I think it's too late to start making wholesale changes now. Moore was light but he looked like he had the frame for another 30-40lbs.
I can certainly live with us recruiting bigger lineman. I just thought it was odd, and the timing seemed odd. Maybe I read too much into it.
Goldberg reporting Gran is after Brandon Jacobs.
The psychology of recruiting is amazing to me. Nobody wanted us to commit Moseley, but now that Ole Miss is scheduling a visit and message boards say Alabama is trying to free up a scholly for him he's the greatest thing to ever happen to Auburn. "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member." - Groucho Marx.
AU now dropped to 30th in recruiting rankings at rivals. Obviously a little psychology at play there, too.
It's one thing to get hired at a new school and go after uncommitted targets from your previous school. They are fair game.
But, I have a little bit of a problem with trying to sway committed prospects from your old school to your new school.
I guess in this day and age when a commitment really doesn't mean much it should be expected. I just thought there was an unspoken rule, or gentleman's agreement not to do that.
JGT- we're at 415
If you're comfortable, I'm comfortable. And if we're comfortable, then I hope Brandon Moore is, too.
I love recruiting rankings. They change the number of stars a player has with no linkage to physical ability or field results. They simply look at how many schools are recruiting a kid and who they are - and they change the rankings. How can a kid sitting on his couch go from *** to **? And then people get on the recruiting site's message board and complain about the number of stars changing because it affects their teams ranking (like there's some prize to be won). It's lunacy.
The term commitment has no meaning whatsoever. What the hell is a soft-verbal commitment? Ridiculous.
I'm sitting in my office doing expense reports and turned on a recording of the 2007 Auburn/Florida game. We didn't know what we had. I'm watching a very poised and calm Brandon Cox shred the Gator secondary and change plays at the line to get us in a good one. I'm listening to announcers talk about how under-appreciated he is, and I realize now how right they were. I'd love to have another Brandon Cox.
I think his inconsistency probably had something to do with his disease.
This is nothing. We hit 600 a week or two ago. We hit 1000 way back in the day.
Let the kids play!
Oh, and I think recruiting rankings are generally pretty accurate. And yes, I know Sen'derrick was a two star prospect.
Did JayGT say if he was going to Lexington KY for the bball game? That could explain our unsupervised post proliferation. I'd like to stop at 888.
I bet Jay is working on something pretty big. That would explain our post count.
I'm a statistician, and I've tried to figure out a way to quantitatively measure how good recruiting rankings are based on real results. I don't think it's a solvable problem though, because the rankings are subjective. I agree, however, that the rankings are actually pretty good.
Some measures that count are size, intelligence, toughness, character, and meanness. Now how do you put a number around that? You get some dumb ex-coach to watch some film, burp, and say - "That boy's a two star."
Stat- that's too funny
As a statistician, you understand variability. Certainly someone like Mosely turning into a top NFL draft pick is within the standard deviation of the star system, but it is unlikely. Like all rankings, they are done by people, so certainly are full of errors. I read an article on NFL draft picks, and the star ranking system was actually pretty good at predicting where they would go in the draft, but of course there are exceptions.
I do think Auburn fans take the easy way out and say stars don't matter, look at player x. Am I really supposed to buy that the Auburn coaches the past few years would not have wanted Pete Carroll's recruiting classes?
Yeah, that's what I thought!
I'm sure USC's recruits were good despite their irrelevant high stars ;-)
Michael, I agree that the rankings are pretty good - take another look at my previous message. I'm just saying they're subjective.
Too often we take subjective information, put a number on it and think it's objective. I'm not sure what standard deviation and dispersion (variance) of the star ranking system would really mean. Comparing subjective recruit rankings to subjective NFL draft choices only exacerbates the problem. (Most high round picks are great, but some are busts.)
I'm sure, however, that when I break the code my answer will be 97.34% accurate. :-)
Do we have a DB coach yet?
60% of the time, statitistics are right every time
Harrison I agree with most of that statement about half of the time.
I am a 6-sigma black belt. Whatever that means. So I know things!
Check this guy out. I think Jan Terri has officially passed the torch:
Mark Gormley
i spelled statistics terribly wrong. almost comical
Is Terrance Coleman not feeling the Auburn offer is swagalicious enough? Is he Jimmy Sexton-ing us?
i heard T. Coleman was just duck hunting in Arkansas.
Sorry this thread grew so large.
I'm working on a new one right now. Should be up no later than 12:05 p.m. CST.
One of the reasons Antonio Coleman gave for returning was to be able to play with his nephew. If Terrance goes to Arkansas he's gonna have some 'splaining to do.
BTW - my son tells me that 94.3% of all statistics are made up.
(How do you tell if a statistician is lying - he says "percentage")
The End.
... or is it????
