Vanderbilt def. Auburn, 82-75.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Post No. 1,020
Welcome to Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
Post No. 1,020
Welcome to Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
- FINAL
Vanderbilt wins, 82-75. - AUBURN TO @ 1:23
Vanderbilt leads, 76-72. A pair of three-point shots from Beal have given the Commodores a big boost. - AUBURN TO @ 4:30
Vanderbilt leads, 70-67. Ogilvy, Vanderbilt's big center, is getting assertive and working Auburn near the basket. - SECOND TO @ 11:58
Vanderbilt leads, 54-50. Auburn has lots if verve -- and its shooting touch. The Commodores aren't really abusing near the basket like they were early in the game, but this Jermaine Beal character is hitting shots from all over. - FIRST TO @ 15:58
Tied at 48. Auburn has scored on five of its first six possessions to open the half. Not too shabby. There's a different level of energy out there right now. - Football recruit David Oku is here. A few kids in the student section started cheering his name and Oku didn't mind. He began leading the chorus. Funny.
- This is the "Red Panda Acrobat," who performed at halftime. While riding a unicycle, she was kicking bowls from her feet to her head. And she'd stack 'em 12 high. It's a miracle.
- HALFTIME
Vanderbilt leads, 41-36. Auburn scored three points on each of its final three possessions of the first half -- Barber with the "and one", Barrett with a three, Sullivan with a three. - FOURTH TO @ 3:01
Vanderbilt leads, 38-27. Same basic concept. Lett is showing some signs of life on the offensive end. - THIRD TO @ 7:28 (I missed the second one with Washington stuff)
Vanderbilt leads, 29-19. Auburn is having a difficult time defending in the post. The Commodores have three big guys and they're getting plenty of opportunities. Barber and Johnnie Lett seem ill-equipped to handle the barrage. - Reed has checked in.
- FIRST TO @ 15:51
Vanderbilt leads, 9-3. Scintillating start for the Tigers. They are 1-for-8 right now. PG DeWayne Reed apparently was a late arrival and has been benched as a result. More on that later. - Your Auburn Tigers starters:
F/C -- Korvotney Barber
F -- Lucas Hargrove
SF -- Rasheem Barrett
SG -- Tay Waller
PG -- Tez Robertson

ONE - for JGT, DL, and all the other great priority posters who have blazed the trail for us mere mortals to follow.
need some help here, folks
nice
Speed Reed is not starting.
D. Washington to AU as per Scout
Nice pick up for AU, gues they told him he would get a chance at RB v/s CB. It would be sweet to land Oku too this weekend.
I can't be sure but I think I spotted Reuben in the top left corner of JGT pic. It appears a little less than a sell out at the tip. Is that accurate JGT?
I want to make 100% sure on Demond W. before I print it here.
washington claims a 4.29 forty...thats blazing
FAST
is the game being streamed anywhere?
like dewayne reed isn't starting per coaches decision?
already behind and in foul trouble. ok, perhaps a bit of hyperbole, but LET'S GO AUBURN!!!
Washington also is 5-foot-9.
I claimed that as well one time...then they actually timed me.
Word is that Reed was late to the arena today.
anything under a legit 4.3 is scary fast.... if I recall Fast Freddy is in the 4.2 range also...
get these kids inthe open field and watch out... much like byrd at LSU
Dear Leader,
I don't know what this is cause it won't go there on my Mac/Safari. If you have IE...
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaab/gamechannel?gid=200901310028
We're shooting 16% from the field.
The good news... we haven't missed a FT yet.
oh, that's acceptable. I've just started to come around and become a Dewayne Reed fan. He's got a lot better over the past year. Not as many 100 mph lay ups.
I watched Montae Pitts run a 4.29 in high school. Did him a lot of good.
Jay GT-
Could post # 1018 also double as attendance, or is that being a bit too generous?
We'll go with Demond Washington now, but it all came about in a weird way.
This is a decent crowd.
Maybe 3,500?
Why you hatin on demond jay...you dont think he will be good? Better hope I dont tell tha BULL on you. He takes no prisoners
vandy 60% FG 100%FT
AU 11% FG 0% FT
I'm not a genious, but I think those trends need to reverse if AU is going to be in this game.
*genius.... just proved my point
AU has made committed more fouls than we've made FGs
Jay montae wasn't 5'9'' either.
As i recall pitts wasnt a bad player.
y all the hatin?
I retro-posted a short thread on Demond Washington for your pleasure.
Pitts wasn't a good player, either.
Wasn't trying to draw a parallel between Washington and Pitts. Just saying that being a 4.29 guy means nothing on its own.
I'm telling you, Demond Washington is going to be exciting on O and in the return game. Speed kills when the coaches know how to use it - see Florida.
Montae Pitts was definitely below average... as a football player and a rapper
This comment has been removed by the author.
Pitts was still an Auburn man..and should be given the respect he earned (perhaps not on the field) but he graduated did he not?
I say Demond ends up as a cornerback
I don't think he graduated... i might be wrong, but i think he did quit the team to pursue rapping... i don't feel like I owe him anything
you dont owe him anything but lets not bash him... I love all our players and wish them the best.
In recruiting world does 5'9'' mean 5'7''.
he might actually owe me considering some of the point spreads he blew
I wonder what the odds are he'll play some O and some D (during a game, not from one year to the next)
Washington will contribut next season IMO
Rasheem and Frankie sure could use a little help out there.
Him , mcalleb, Fannin...tate will be odd man out...too slow?
Nooj, homes, I have no affiliation to the kids. If you think I was ripping Pitts, you're skin must be remarkably thin. Wow.
Didn't Pitts transfer somewhere?
Pitts left Auburn for Jacksonville State.
to think McCalleb and washington will start over ben tate is somewhat ridiculous.
JUCO players with only 2 years left have to contribute immediately.
Chill out jay..was just tryin to figure out if you think demond will have the same carrer as pitts...cause thats what it sounded like at first. Sorry for the confusion...dont get mad at me buddy
Don't faint...
AU is a PERFECT 1/1 from the charity stripe
Tate is remarkable slow for a shotgun running play
We've got an open starting spot at CB, maybe he's the answer.
I, however was ripping Montae Pitts.
I predict Demond Washington = Jae Wilhite
which is decent
UNC B-ball on my tv at 3:30 EST; that will be a relief
I couldnt bare for Jay "my favorite au info man" to be upset with me...I coulndt deal with that I dont think.....being as how my skin is so thin...lol...J/k
I like Tate a lot, but he is a tad slow. Anybody wanna seriously step out and say he is quick enough to play at Florida or Oklahoma?
Is it just me or does Lebo's teams depend on perimeter shooting way too much? When they are on they can beat alot of teams when they aren't they almost lose to Texas Pan American.
ur funny ... i like u ... lolz ... j/k
Thanks for gettin my back NO tiger...
Lebo has an aversion to signing quality big men I think.
Do I detect some Anger in there Jay...really I do love your work..I seriously would be heartbroken if you were angry with me..Your my favorite sports writer and the only one i check regularly
Fannin would ride the pine at FLA and OKLA also. Tate got a bad rap this season because he was stuck in there running Tony Franklin's one running play. I think next year he will be pretty good.
Yes Ron, Fannin would ride the pine at UF and Oklahoma, but Ben wouldn't even make the team. Not saying that he isn't useful though.
true ron...couldve been the franklin syndrome..he was pretty good the year before.
Tony Franklin had no clue how to use that running play out of the shotgun. It was a race to the sidelines. Malzahn's version of that play is more off tackle which is more ben tate's speed. I think it will work out better for him.
Ben Tate looks like a bruiser, yet you never see him run over anybody. Every play he seems to gain 3 yards, or lose 2, depending on where he gets touched. I can only assume he is one heck of a pass blocker.
Me 2 now that i think about it ron
Man our bball team is horrible
I put up a pic of the gal who provided halftime entertainment. It was NUTS.
I think in Borges offense Tate would be a great back, I'm not sure hes a spread back. I think we are going to have some quality backs the next few years.
Hey I know her... she is my subject.. how'd she get out..
now THAT'S halftime entertainment!
This is kind of odd....Scout.com lists Demond as a 5-star, what in the world?
I think Tate is better that any of us have seen... look at lester last year, pretty dismal also... it was the systems..
Get the right O with other quality players to play off and Tate will shine.
They need to advertise her and the arena would be full. That's ridiculously awesome skill. Doesn't feed the world, but it's entertaining.
Red panda:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIECdLtVTwA
sorry, i'm too lazy to link
Lester also battled injuries all year. Fannin is our best returning RB, at least with the ball in his hands.
I think we need to look at this kid as an RB before anythign else.
Re: "the red panda"
I concur, a miracle indeed
Does anyone know who David Oku's player guest is, i hope he takes him out tonight and gets him some groupies. don't mean to be graphic but thats how much we need this kid
jhag, you're never graphic.
HAHA why thank you Mr. TATE...wow that's awesome about the student section chanting OKU keep them updates coming abotu that, it excites me.
They were yelling for Aubrey Phillips, too.
How do you like that?
That is ausome! I knew I shoulda gone to the game
YOU are getting ME PUMPED. can i get a Johnnie Farms anyone?
Farms would be a great pickup for us. Could play early.
Jay can you get a picture of the recruits?
Good question riskman, but Jay G no pressure at all
crap, we missed a FT
risk ... that'll have to wait until tomorrow.
I say there is a definite chance a true freshman starts on the O-line this year somewhere
Alright thanks Jay keep up the good work!!
So anyone know why scout gave demond wash. 5 stars?
BUT WE'VE GOT THE LEAD
Aubrey Phillips, Johnnie Farms, John Sullen these guys are all over at least 320 right? aren't they a tad gynormous for the spread?
Damn good power o-line though
Anybody have a way I can hear the game over the net?
cien!
Vandy leads, 62-61.
6:50 to go.
Are y'all listenin'?
I'm just stuck with yahoo box score updates.
After shooting 11% midway through 1st half, AU has now climbed to almost 50% for the game.
POUR IT ON, TIGERS!!!
Jhag,
We saw what 6' 7" 280 looked like in the spread last year. I say put some weight on them.
I love the bigger O-line myself. Remember, Gus does not run the same offense as Franklin. He is recruiting these guys for a reason.
Jay GT- did AU really commit 3 PFs in less than a minute?
I have seen:
Oku
A. Phillips
Farms
C. Moseley
C. Gaines
yeah I guess I agree, look at texas teck's o-line, HUGE and damn good at blocking in the spread, except verse SEC teams uh oh.
Corey Gaines would also be huge, Moseley must have dorve over on an unofficial im assuming.
Moseley is on an official.
Jay GT- Tell Lucas to drop another trey.
Tied!!
Somebody needs to let Lebo know that there are quality players over 6'7". Might wanna get one or two being that he has been here for 5 years already without signing 1.
Vandy up 73-70.
2:30 to play.
Jay, do the recruits seem to be enjoying themselves at that the game?
Vandy up 73-60.
2:30 to play.
Jay,
I personally would enjoy an update on the long snapper. Chants, sightings, fist fights between he and Dax Dellenbach, etc.
he's signed a couple of 7 footers. Neither was a basketball player and neither lasted more than 1 yr
i wish that lebo would recruit some size sometime this decade.
And down by 6 just like that...
Vanderbilt leads, 76-70.
1:45 to go.
AUant ... Oku is having a good time here, yes.
how someone can suck so bad from FT line is absolutely incomprehensible
Yeah, but has has signed the big men that nobody else wants. Since Speed Reed and Tez rarely come out, how many guards does a team need anyway?
SWEET!!!
I guess I'll turn on the real basketball game now.
:-(
If you are a 6'5" shooting guard, Auburn is your team!
Vanderbilt lead now 77-75.
1:06 remaining.
Dont worry everyone the new arena will be the answer to all our prayers...
DAVID OKU!!! DAVID OKU!!! DAVID OKU!!!
Nobody come into Dax's house without a fight. This is the house that Dax built.
We missed Reed's points today.
Auburn is going to lose.
Reed hasn't played in the second half.
Just Awful.
How many more years of this do we have to put up with?
insightful post there, Jay. We are hanging on every word then...
what happened?
Ron, I don't understand.
Auburn lost...
I played dellenbach's high school in basketball last night random fact
UNC 26 NCSU 19
Vanderbilt hit a 3 with 36 seconds remaining. That extended the VU lead to five points.
Then Auburn missed a three, got the ball back and watched Hargrove throw it directly to a Vandy defender.
referring to the "Auburn is going to lose" post. It caught me off guard. We were down two with a minute left... then it was over.
Final: VU 82, AU 75.
Robertson closes the game with four consecutive misses at the FT line.
Not only is Reed AU's scoring leader, he also leads the team in assists and steals per game. Guess he is not much of a leader otherwise?
I know you like TEZ JGT, but I for one will be glad too see him graduate.
No good. Lebo is probably done
I think Lebo will be around another yr.
Jay,
Chances that Lebo returns as Head Coach next year?
Wouldn't we still owe Lebo 3 yrs? After letting TT clean out the vault, not sure there's any left for Lebo
No way they go into a new arena with a coach that has missed the tourney that many years in a row.
Lebo has had a fair shot, he didn't get it done
Tez has not played well lately.
Man I like Lebo and all but geesh, how many years do ya need to do better than this? I'm not expecting us to be a dominant power or anything, but come on. Fact is, we should be better than this with Lebo being here 5 years. Period.
Tez is very average to me. Everything he does is just average (except free throws lately). He is the basketball equivalent to Rusty Williams.
If you were a highly touted basketball recruit, would you want to play in the DUMP called Beard Eaves with very little fan support?
No, nor would I like to play for a coach where the player turnover is at an incredible rate.
according to Lebo's new 7yr contract signed in 2005
The contract includes two clauses, a buyout should Auburn choose to cancel the contract and a penalty clause should Lebo terminate the agreement. Auburn’s buyout is $250,000 for each year remaining on the contract up to a maximum of four years.
so I'm guessing that's a $750K buyout after this season.
Thanks THT I was just about to ask about his contract...
I sure wish I was smart enough to get fired as a football or b-ball coach.
$750,000 to head into a $90 million arena with a fresh enthusiasm... seems like a deal
How much of it is really Lebo?
I think it's 90% the horrible b-ball facilities at AU. But that has resulted in Lebo acquiring a not-so-hot reputation that I seriously doubt can be overcome by the new arena.
Bottom Line: I think Ron Mexico is right.
I agree Ron, I was just pointing out that it has been a losing proposition in the past based on fan support and facilities.
$750k, yes.
If you started coaching bball now and won 33 games/yr for the next 30 years, you'd still be behind Pat Summitt.
Can we get her to coach AU men?
I feel embarrassed for the students that started chanting Oku's name and such. This is basketball. Show your school spirit for him not by idolizing someone but for cheering on your Tigers. Pathetic.
If chanting Oku's name gets him to commit it is well worth it, trust me.
From what I have been told today it sounds like this could be huge weekend for the Chiz.
MBT... seriously? I am proud that our students were savvy enough to cheer for Oku, though I wish they had focused more on the OL's Phillips and Farms.
Happens everywhere.
One of the biggest selling points we have as a football program is how football crazy our fans are. We would love to cheer for a great men's BBall team as well, but we don't have that. And football would still come first... I for one love that about being a student here.

I love the crowd chanting the names of the recruits. LOVE IT.
Hey Monica. I am Dewayne's cousin.
Good news ...
Marshall just threw a TD pass on the last play to beat Xavier in the first game since the plane crash.
Cheering recruits names is not only allowed, it is encouraged. I can believe that the fine young people attending Auburn University can multitask, cheering for recruits and for our hoops team at the same time.
Hey there, Carney! Glad to see you signed up and posting.
GO HERD!
WE ARE!
MARSHALL!!
Jay - Your thought on Izauea Lanier? Didn't you speak with him when he was here? Bryan at Auburnsports.com says he visited MSU this weekend. In your opinion, is he just enjoying the weekend of can he be courted away?
When you take your official to Mississippi State, do they try to convince the visitors that the Beau Rivage is in Starkville?
Just read that DT Shackleford switched his commit from UT to Ole Miss. Either we really are full at LB or Chiz has something big planned for signing day.
Shackleford was told as was Lattimore the we are full at LB. Two very good players to turn down.
So does anyone have a link to this picture of Coach Taylor and David Oku holding up a sign that said "OKU Running Back U" ???
From everything I read he was having a great time. I did not have a warm fuzzy about him until these latest reports have come out. Sounds like CGC may silence the doubters if his motivation and determination continue from the recruiting trail to Spring Practice and then finally game day.
My how our recruiting rankings have shot up thanks to Mr. Demond Washington!
Auburn Ranked #14!
I'm glad the crowd chanted "OKU", but I wish our basketball team were good enough to be the focus at a basketball game.
We should bring in Charles Barkley as basketball coach. He was fired at TBS, so he needs something to do when he's not playing golf. He knows a little about basketball, and would be a great recruiter. He's black, so he wouldn't have to say nasty things about the basketball coach. And there are lots of places to get bear claw donuts and wine coolers. As for his other appetites, well maybe living in Auburn would make him a better person.
If you think Spurrier is a part-time coach, Charles Barkley would redefine the genre.
Rivals doesn't like our recruits near as much.
Oku would be a nice add. This recruiting class could shape up to be better than I expected if we get a few of these high profile guys.
I hope all these smaller RBs can catch the ball as well, we only have 2 WR on our list right now.
Spurrier is a full time coach, but his offense is so 90s. He hasn't progressed with the trends in college football. The zone blitz really put a whipping on the Spurrier type offenses.
7/15 from the free throw line. It's bad when you only get 15 attempts at home anyway, but only hit 7???
LOL, Jay. We'd probably be better off the more time he stayed off campus. Just hire great assistants and let Barkley recruit.

this kid i know that was at the game said someone gave a sign that said "RBU for OKU!!!" and they said coach troop was acting crazy...
i think we have a good chance at this kid, why would he be taking this visit if he love UTenn so much?
Rivals says Phillip Lutzen... had the best hands of the TE's in the nation..i didn't know he was that highly touted?
Here is a link to the Oku pic, but it is terribly fuzzy.
