Your Friday Thread
Hey everyone. As discussed in yesterday's comments, I'm headed to my first school assembly since 1990 this morning. This is non-negotiable, I'm told.
So I have nothing for you yet.
Still, you know how I hate comments cracking the 200 barrier, so here is a new thread to relieve the pressure.
Please enjoy.

That was an incredible performance, anony.

Man I'm sad that I too missed the Gump hatin last night. I have waaay too much to share. Been gone three years now, but spent the first 22 (sans time at Auburn) there. For the most part, bad times. I will live in a cardboard box before I EVER move back.
Wow. That's pretty bad, Brad.
Brad -I won't say never, but I tell ya, there would have to be some extreme circumstances (good or bad) that would make me do it.
Gump hatin = bin Laden hatin'.
Too obvious; too easy.
Jay G Tate, I love how your wife put it..."compulsory for all fathers who live in this house." Didn't leave much wiggle room, did it?
I stick by my never statement. Love my family and will happily visit, but living there full-time is not an option.
Thanks for keep us in line Jay G.
Longshot Weekend, eh? Has a good ring to it. I will go out on a long limb and predict we get at least 1 commit from the group. How's that for stepping out on a flimsy limb?
Brad,
The cardboard box might be a bit rough, don't you think?
Mr. Jay G Tate....
You look like you gotta go in that picture....
or
You just went in your pants...
Miller, I have only felt unsafe in two cities during my lifetime...Detroit and Montgomery. Add that to the boredom and monotony of living there, and you have it summed up.
Brad - wow. In all of my years there, I was only a victim of crime twice - I had two bicycles stolen. What part of town were you? I never felt unsafe in my 'hood, but I knew other 'hoods where I would not travel.
Wow! Strong words on the Gump.
I live 40 miles away and hate to go there.
I agree it's not the most pleasurable be place to live. I know my wife does not feel safe here. I have never felt like I wasn't safe (then again, I did live in Macon for a few years and got live training). But, I can understand why someone wouldn't feel safe living here. It has definitely gone downhill just in the past 5 years.
Maybe not "just" in the last 5 years. But its been very evident in the 5 years I have lived in the Gump how far down that hill it has gone during that time. I live on the North side, and we will visit East Gump, but we don't go down to the South end of town. Generally don't go further S than Vaughn Rd.
So Normandale South Hull St are a little sketchy now?
Alex Wright....
OL coach on the way..
I grew up in Memphis, so your Montgomery stories scare me not.
TommyD ...
Normandale-South Hull is sketchy only in a Mogadishu/Baghdad outside of Green Zone sketchy way.
Great- I guess I'll just take a convoy next time I want to go see the ole homestead
michael, I have heard that Memphis is pretty bad.
GaTiger:
I had a gun put to the back of my head just off of Zelda Rd (near Moe's) while visiting my then girlfriend. Luckily all they wanted was money, which I did not have. Either way, I always look around when I'm in that town anymore. That's definitely not the case in all of the other cities I frequent (which are many) except Detroit.
Morning HOTTIES!!!!
wow....couldn't get on last night and missed all the gump hatin!
My take is that we wanted to retire here after AF because it was close to Ga family and AU
What were we thinkin? I cant believe a capitol city could be so small town and I actually think downtown has improved since we've been here!
Thank goodness for Bright...I can see how Folmar kept this town in the dark all these years
Of course, as soon as our son is done at AU then we are out of here
I don't encourage my kids to come back as I don't see how anyone can have upward movement here unless they are in a state or federal job
Montgomery doesn't scare me....I've lived in LA (Calif) and Washington DC
It's just that if you are not in the Montgomery Elite then nothing here will happen for you because they still think of it as a small town (which essentially it is!!)
Guess ya'll shouldn't have gotten me started!
Official Visitor List for 1/16/09:
___________________________________
We have some big time recruits coming this weekend (stars from Rivals):
**** Emory Blake WR (Has Colorado and Texas Tech interest listed as high, Auburn low)
*** Nosa Eguae DE (Has Minnesota high, Neb, Tex and AU medium)
*** Donald Ford LB (Committed (SP?) to Auburn)
*** Anthony Gulley RB (Auburn high, Troy medium)
**** Dequinta Jones DT (Committed to Michigan, Auburn and Arkansas low)
**** Brandon Moore OT (UA, AU, Clem, UF, Miami medium)
**** Tana Patrick LB (UA, AU, Miami, USC medium)
*** John Sullen OG (Committed to USM, doesn't have offer from us)
*** Demond Washington ATH (Committed to Ole Miss, AU low, Rivals reporting he will probably change committments after this weekend)
And presenting the new addition:
Hargrave 5 star receiver DeAngelo Benton, originally committed to LSU, he was Rivals' number three overall prep school player in 2008
There is little to no upward movement in a state job.
Bright may have assisted the revitalization project going on downtown, but it has at the expense of the rest of the town. Bright is part of what's wrong with Montgomery.
What is this about Alex Wright, Cowboy?
Alex Wright, Das Wunderkind? Our techno dancing and illegal use of the comb on the offensive line will surely improve.
yes, miller you are right but I would have hated to see downtown deteriorate with all the beautiful buildings
But I was not in favor of the Renassince (sp) Hotel either but I do love the ballpark
It's the school situation that will never be turned around and I am glad I don't have that over my head anymore! My son got a full scholarship to AU but because of private school
so lloooowwww property taxes have got us in this situation and now the private schools are too ensconced in the area and people don't want to up taxes for better schools. Of course, with our school board who would trust them to spend the money wisely either!!
War Eagle Girl, what number is the girl in your avatar wearing? I'm going to see them next Sunday and need to know who to watch for!
okay, I have got to get off my soap box since this is supposed to be about sports at AU!
Everyone have a great WARM day and War Eagle!!
DL, Jay looks like Gary Cole in his avatar pic.
"Usually you have to pay double for that kind of action, Cotton."
Michael, was that a WCW reference that I noticed? Nice!
Luv, that is Ali Smalley from Arab who is having her HS school jersey retired and she is only a sophmore
Thanks, WEG! Apparently, she's worth watching!
This is Alex Wright...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qra-2p4fcaM
(Note: Totally safe for work. Start at 2:00 in).
Indeed, Brad. I was quite into wrasslin in my earlier years. I guess my life has come full circle with Alex Wright joining the coaching staff. He is a bit full of himself, but I think he will be good for Auburn.
Awesome Michael! I must admit, I have tickets to Royal Rumble next week since it is only 90 miles away from me. I went to Wrestlemania two years ago as well b/c the same situation presented itself.
Where is AU's Wright coming from? I don't know much about him.
Wish I could go to some BBall but until the wedding is over on 24th my mind is overly occupied and I won't get it back until it's over!
Didn't realize the Gump was so dangerous. I grew up in Prattville in the 60-70's and it was fine. When I was a kid, it was a big deal to go to Shakey's Pizza at Normandale...not now huh? Most any inland southern town that size will lack for entertainment.
Now that I think about it, every friend/relative has moved to the outlying areas/towns...most citing schools as the reason. Wasn't Old Cloverdale doing the intown rebirth thing a few years ago?
I went to Valentine's Day Massacre in Memphis in '99. Also went to a couple of Nitros in Memphis. Those were the days.
I also made my aol screenname RockyM84 for Rocky Maivia as he was known then. I was the only one cheering for him all the way back to when he was in the Nation of Domination.
I haven't watched in years though, since before WCW went under.
Huge recruiting weekend for us.
Wow, that's some classic stuff Michael. I keep up with it occasionally because its so ridiculous that its entertaining. A friend and I are actually very excited to see an independent show next week before Rumble b/c a bunch of washed out hacks are going to be there. I think Honky Tonk Man is even fighting.
Tubs discovered Cameron Kinney and now we have let him get away. We seriously need WR playmakers. In fact, Many of the originally maligned Tubs summer camp discoveries have seen their stock rise and some are now wavering. Is this fallout from the PTB actions or lack of attention from the new coaches?
Montgomery is a slow, southern town; nothing more and nothing less. I travel all around the world for my job, and people are mostly nice everywhere. But there are no nicer people than those in Montgomery. I grew up there, left after college, and probably won't live there again, but it stacks up OK with anywhere I've been. Please don't compare it with the hellhole we call "Detroit".
Wow, bravo to Honky Tonk Man for being alive. There is only a 50/50 shot for wrestlers to make it that far.
Anyone else want to convert this to a wrestling message board while Jay is gone?
astatguy,
after 30 years in the AF it is just another place and I thought I would adopt it but just don't seem to be able to love it
Maybe I've seen too much
Stat Guy -
My disdain for Montgomery is not towards the people. They, for the most part, are great. Like you, I grew up there and moved after college. My objection lies with the city's crime record (which is very poor) and general lack of entertainment options (Biscuits, ASF, and that's about it). Also, my only comparison to Detroit was due to safety issues. Not in any other capacity.
Sorry if I offended you, but I don't like my words being misconstrued.
I totally agree, Mon.
We need to get some verbals from the uncommitted or switches from those big-time visitors!
Back to wedding planning......have a great War Eagle Day and try to stay warm!!!
DeAngelo Benton at WR would be HUGE.
Mon,
I was reading his bio....
WOW!!! we get him, Patrick and Blake along with the DE commits and we can begin to have a good recruiting year!
Hoopie...
There is a distinct third possibility ... not dismissing 1 or 2 out of hand, mind you ... and that is other schools are deciding they like Kenney and others and are recruiting them aggressively as well, and that some of those players have affinities for those schools.
I've been reading too many threads on Rivals. I'm getting paranoid. I have crazy, cynical thoughts swirling through my head like...
What if players are pulling a Jimmy Sexton? What if LSU wasn't making Benton's offer swagalicious enough and so he announces a visit to Auburn knowing the LSU staff will NOT allow him to switch his commitment?
I can't stand getting caught up in the recruiting circus, at the end of the day Auburn will end up with some athletes, and we currenty have a bunch of those and with a good coaching staff anything can happen.
My motto: just wait until signing day, then panic.
Monica, are you accusing schools of "underhanded" tactics in recruiting. I thought all that these kids got was a free education. (Tongue firmly in cheek
Mon,
WOW You Too!!!!!
I deeply and lusciously enjoy the recruiting circus and will wallow in it until it's over and I have some other aspect of Auburn football in which to bathe. For this, I make no apology. :-)
Monica ... Paranoia will destroya.
SeanZ ... pretty good policy right here.
Chiz and the Boyz ... go do that voodoo that you do so well.
Brad, I know! I know! It's crazy talk on my part and it would offend the delicate sensibilities of recruiters across the NCAA. :-)
Mon, my favorite time is def the Spring Practice saga about how good all these new kids are and how we've got two awesome talents at QB, etc...at least then it's all positive.
I am invincible. Jet, you should know this by now.
232 days until the boys kick it again.
Mon,
Sorry i read you comments 2-3 times just to make sure i understood what you said!!! Now I need a cigarette!
swagalicious...I like that!
Ya know we're eventually going to organize a HABOTN tailgate and when we do I'm going to have a difficult time not calling some of you by your hottie nickname.
Jet, I know I will call you "Jet" - Luv will be Luv, Mobile will be Mobile and so on.
Just a useless, random thought from Monica...
At least we'll all know who Monica is.
The real question is whether FSJ would show up.
You ... are ... OMNICA!
Hear you roar!
Anyone here think Monica ought to go back to AU to head up the recruiting host and hostesses program?
oh Faker will there...book it
Jet - You're just saying that because I confided in you my history as a Madame/Pimp Mama...
Actually, no.
But, OK.
(Insert vision of me being speechless).
So, what's for lunch?
Wow. Just WOW.
So who's up for having an A-Day HABOTN get together??
I like Omnica in the stalker role she currently holds. She's a wealth of insider creepy knowledge, and we are all greatful that she shares what she knows.
BTW, I'm starving!
Kinda Karl Rovian, perhaps.
A Day is a great idea, Sean. That would be perfect. A shame I won't be able to make it.
Even in Atlanta, GA, today is most definitely a chunky soup day. I can't ever believe I wished that summer would end.
C'mon OMNICA I know you can be in places at once.
Haig, Rove - Interesting that these insults are all from Republican administrations...
Err... Grateful.
Insults?
High praise!
They are patriots!
Jet - uh huh...lol
Miller - You're so kind to frame my obsession in a generous light. ha
BTW, Monica ...
I have a Karl Rove teddy bear.
Not really.
OK, maybe.
Greg has some fantastic smelling chili concoction brewing in the Crock-Pot. You're all invited over.
Jet!!! You MUST post a pic of you and Carly Bear on Facebook!
Throw some Conecuh sausage on the grill ... put some of the chili on it with some mustard and onions, well, then you've got sumpin' special.
I know the good people at Conecuh Meats. They live amongst my peoples.
Greg does have sausage in it, but I'm afraid it's not the Conecuh variety. :-(
Yum Chili! Mon if you could FedEx me a bowl to 1 Coca-Cola Plaza, Atlanta GA, ATTN: The SeanZ, I'd be so greatful!
95 David Rocker
So, Monica, when WOULD you be able to make it? A HABOTN party wouldn't be a HABOTN party without you.
Brad:
I'll show up....
What am I showing up for?
You know what? My Greg is such a good guy he'd find a way to ship you a container if you really wanted it. He just sent my sister (Dirty) and my Mother a shipment of his world famous brownies.
Faker, HABOTN A-DAY get together, and that's our A-Day, not yours.
Dirty sister?
Luv - That's awfully nice of you, gurl! You gotta admit the A Day game would be perfect! No ticket issues, etc. Y'all should do that. As far as a time when we could make it...the plan is to be living in the B'ham area by this summer, so it would be fun to have a Fall Hottie tailgate.
my dad grew up coon hunting and fishing on the Conecuh River. Tell me about Conecuh Meats.
Hello Hotties!
Interesting start to this thread with all the Gump hating. I've never spent more that a night there at any single point in time, but I'm pretty sure you Gump haters ain't got NOTHIN on the HAM as far as corruption, crime, and general anarchy go.
On another note, it is a huge recruiting weekend for Auburn. There are some potential big time names coming for a visit this weekend, and hopefully there will be some pleasant surprises come from that.
Oh well, back to my stagnant state job. Actually Miller, as long as you know (or are related to) the right peeps the upward movement is there. Too bad for me that neither of those applies...
Oh...HABOTN Auburn A-Day get together...
Do I have to wear orange? Or will blue suffice?
Monica, speaking of moving, I sent you an email to your Yahoo account.
A fall HABOTN tailgating party could also be arranged. We go to all the games, except Homecoming.
My "baby" sister's name is Diana. She joined us for a Campfire one night and was logged in under the nickname of "Dirty". Her school friends started calling her "Dirty" when Michael Jackson had that song, "Dirty Diana" out in the late 80's.
I love Dirty!!
Mon,
You need us to send you some Conecuh Sausage to WVA?
Mmmmmmmm. Brownies. Now, I could go for a pan of brownies!
My suggestion is the for the inaugural HABOTN-Stock to be held for the 2009 season opener vs. La. Tech. -- tickets might be a tad more available for a non-conference game for those who don't have season ducats and with the Labor Day weekend in play, those who are traveling will have an extra day to recover.
FSJ,I think most of the Hotties are all for bringing back the BLUE.
I think we should wear the HABOTN t-shirt.
MobilZ ... this IS a family blog.
Tar - http://www.conecuhsausage.com/default.aspx
Check 'em out.
Miller - We'll get Greg to make some brownies for the tailgate if you can wait that long. Or if you really want them I'm telling you he'll send 'em. After all, you might end up being our neighbors one day.
Jet,
It's for her Chilli!
Cheezzzzz!
I'll have 3-5 extra tickets available exclusively for Hottie use, depending on how many THTers make the trip.
MobilZ ... we know you, man.
We got our eyes on you.
James,
I know what you mean. Thus far in my career I have resisted the urge to make good use of my contacts in the name of advancement. That may change one day though.
Dangit Mon! I'm craving brownies now.
Luv - Just saw your email. Thanks so much for the info! It will take me a while to answer your question, but I will. lol
Looks like I'm baking brownies tonight. So much for my plans of a healthy lunch. Although, I guess they will balance each other out.
Thanks for that link Mon-
gonna have to order me some
I know what you mean, Miller. I tried so hard to not sample the brownies before he mailed them, but I am in charge of Quality Control! :-)
Yum, brownies ... and I know THT has got some ice cream and chocolate syrup to put on top.
After the chili and the Conecuh sausage, and the brownies and ice cream, I'll be ready for a trip to the Saban residence.
In other news, an Auburn spokesperson confirmed that the school is moving in another direction and head football athletic trainer Arnold Gamber will not be retained. Auburn said this move is not related to Chaz Ramsey's situation.
http://blog.al.com/auburnbeat/2009/01/friday_news_and_notes_from_the.html
QC manager can occasionally have its benefits.
Not related my foot.
Jet..Jet...Jet
That's not very nice...
Hotties!
Here's a nice article on Gus Malzahn that's great reading:
"Man on the go!"
FSJ ...
What?!?
I merely did not want Nick to have Terri feel obligated to cook me dinner. That's all.
Fried catfish in the cafeteria today!!! Yum!!! First Friday they've had in a few months.
if I'm lucky they'll have enough left over to serve it a supper
I am a little concerned about coming to Auburn for anything though...
Auburn is sorta like kryptonite to me...
It might not be safe for a Bama fan such as me...
Another Great Read Hotties!
News and Notes on a Friday:
"Friday Fish Fry"
Man I missed the second round of Gump hatin!! Montgomery and Memphis have similar histories and I think that affects the way people act towards each other. It's just too hard to get over the hatred and division that came out of the historic events of these places. It ends up affecting everything from educational systems to economic development.
Moving on...huge recruiting weekend! I really hope we pull out all the stops for these WRs especially. I hope these kids really realize the potential to make an early impact in a great program in the best conference in America.
Couple of things I wanted to throw out and get some opinions on:
How much contact can a head coach have with recruits?
* I have been told that Dinky entertained several recruits here in Mobile the night of the BCS championship game at Felix's FishCamp. Is that something that counts toward the in home visit?
* Also the O-Line coach thing I have been told is coming down to Campbell? Anybody else hearing that?
Goldberg reporting that Gran is going to Tennessee.
Conecuh Sausage, brownies, chili and such. MMM...
gatiger just returned from an All You Can Eat Wing Buffet. 9 hungry male coworkers put a hurtin' on that buffet. Add Conecuh Sausage to my list of things I miss about living in the Gump. If Conecuh Sausage is sold in the ATL area, I haven't found it near me.
Conecuh is the best.....Grilled or it rocks in jambalaya in place of andouille
I know at least one publix in carried it. It was in the background on an episode of Good Eats...and I remember thinking "hey thats C.R."
oops in Alpharetta
Emmett - where? I work in Alpharetta and live right outside of it.
It just said Alpharetta Ga...and it was obvious it was a Publix...I know they do most of their filming on the ATL side of Alph...if that helps
This is some good detective work. I am quite sure Alton Brown had no idea the shelves at publix in one of his bits were so scrutinized.
I'd give someone else's right arm to be on an "official visit" at Auburn right now.
Alton Brown is one of my favorite guys on Food Network.
In Gadsden you can get Conecuh sausage just about everywhere. Good stuff indeed.
FSJ ...
Just had lunch with some Gadsdenians ... asked them about you ... they said, "Seems to be cashing large checks at the local banks, and hanging out at Gadsden City High."
I said, "Status quo, then?"
Just joshin' ya.
Gran was a great coach with Ronnie and Carnell. But then who wouldn't be?
Seriously, I wish him and his family well. I also hope the Dunn's land well. With Price dumping ISU for OM Coach Dunn lost an opportunity.
Jet - considering your employer, I'm guessing that you and your lunchmates had to hurry back from lunch so you wouldn't be late for your breaks.
Gatiger ...
Ouch ... the Peoples Republic was well served during my lunch.
When did Conecuh Sausage get so popular statewide?????
Jet - I guess that depends. If you're still in the tall building, it depends on whether you ate upstairs or downstairs.
Gran also took a RB that couldn't start at South Carolina and turned him into a NFL back. Until this past year I think he had a pretty good body of work at Auburn.
Yesterday ... upstairs ... today, the new hotel.
My presence is, for a lack of a better phrase, desired.
Why? I don't know.
Monica, I checked out Conecuh's website and found out that it is literally made right in your home town.
Here's one of my favorites from my neck of the woods (not my hometown, but very close): http://www.martinspretzelspa.com/
You just can't pretzels like Martin's in Alabama.
Jet, what exactly is it that you do that your presence is desired?
Jet.....
The REC rules Etowah County. Well except for Attalla,
I am a chaffeur for important people.
FSJ ...
I thought the first rule of the Red Elephant Club is "There is no Red Elephant Club."
It is...but I am a rebel.
Jet - isn't that somewhat redundant? I mean, how many unimportant people have chaffeurs? Of course, this doesn't count when they're being chaffeured to their local county hotel for a mandatory 8 hour stay.
Isn't "somewhat redundant" an oxymoron? It's either redundant or not, right?
At this point, MarianP sends us both into the hallway, I figure.
she does and then we're monitored by ida c.
Luv - That's why I'm so surprised (and happy) to hear that Conecuh is so popular state wide now! They are old friends of my Mother's family. They used to do their thing on Castleberry Road in Hog Springs - a suburb of Everygreen. Now they seem to have branched out to the Evergreen metro area. :-)
Thanks so much. Now I have to have a pretzel! grrrr
...suburb of Evergreen
...Evergreen metro area
That's funny, classic stuff right there.
Liking the idea of an A-Day Hottie gathering.
FSJ, you would be more than welcome. . .but you know I would have to call you by your REAL psuedonym. . .
Did I hear something this am on 740 about Jay G getting his own radio show or was I dreaming?
Luv - I finally answered your question in a 15 page email. lol
Thanks GATiger - I'm glad you got the humorocity of it.
Monica,
If you are not careful you will have Castleberry being annexed by Evergreen.
My daughter is addicted to CS, she gets and cooks her own every morning and has seen been doing that since she was 8 yo.
Prattville-Millbrook-Wetumpka-Montgomery = The River Region
Evergreen-Hog Springs-Castleberry = The Sausage Region
Mon, I have to say that any chick who follows recruiting as much as I do has hottie wriiten all over her! Do your thing girl!
C.S. is all fine and good, but what about Conecuh Ridge the official state spirit? Is that stuff still officially sold anywhere other than the trunk of homeboy's car?
LOL Freep....
Of course.
I can't help myself, Cory.
GA - I've never heard of Conecuh Ridge.
Jet - The Sausage Region, indeed. tsk tsk tsk
Still talking about sausage? It's a bit of a sausage-fest in here today.
Good to see that all the BBQ Bunch are finding jobs ... I understand that Lebo is hiring Greg Knox to coach free throwing shooting.
So what do you guys think about the Boston College head coaching situation?
I am settled in for an afternoon of Auburn writing, discussion and speculation.
Does anyone here get as annoyed as I do when people refer to our women's teams as the "Lady Tigers"? They have never been that...it's only Tigers. Sorry about the diatribe, but I was reading an article about the b'ball team, and it disturbed me.
Michael - BC plays football?
Brad, they were the Lady Tigers until some time in the 1990s, as I recall.
Yea -- the name was changed officially a few years ago. They were the "Lady Tigers" for a long while.
My bad then. Still bothers me though.
Jay G ... What does your gut, your Ouiji board, your Magic 8 ball, tell you about tomorrow's game?
Jay,
I gotta say that your new avatar makes you look like one of those mad Russian KGB guys that followed Rocky around while he was training to fight Drago. Love it!
Brad - I don't care if it was official or not, I never liked "Lady Tigers". I didn't like in high school when they called our girls basketball team the Lady Tigers.
Imagine my poor high school ... the Lady Trojans!
Do you know the official state spirit of Alabama? (Googler's are cheaters)
Two new threads up.
I say Auburn Tigers by five points tomorrow.
12-for-20 at the line, which Lebo will classify as "improvement."
