Your Friday Thread

Hey everyone. As discussed in yesterday's comments, I'm headed to my first school assembly since 1990 this morning. This is non-negotiable, I'm told.

So I have nothing for you yet.

Still, you know how I hate comments cracking the 200 barrier, so here is a new thread to relieve the pressure.

Please enjoy.

Man I'm sad that I too missed the Gump hatin last night. I have waaay too much to share. Been gone three years now, but spent the first 22 (sans time at Auburn) there. For the most part, bad times. I will live in a cardboard box before I EVER move back.

8:10 AM

Wow. That's pretty bad, Brad.

Brad -I won't say never, but I tell ya, there would have to be some extreme circumstances (good or bad) that would make me do it.

I stick by my never statement. Love my family and will happily visit, but living there full-time is not an option.

Longshot Weekend, eh? Has a good ring to it. I will go out on a long limb and predict we get at least 1 commit from the group. How's that for stepping out on a flimsy limb?

Brad,
The cardboard box might be a bit rough, don't you think?

Miller, I have only felt unsafe in two cities during my lifetime...Detroit and Montgomery. Add that to the boredom and monotony of living there, and you have it summed up.

8:23 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Brad - wow. In all of my years there, I was only a victim of crime twice - I had two bicycles stolen. What part of town were you? I never felt unsafe in my 'hood, but I knew other 'hoods where I would not travel.

8:32 AM

Wow! Strong words on the Gump.
I live 40 miles away and hate to go there.

8:33 AM
Blogger Miller said...

I agree it's not the most pleasurable be place to live. I know my wife does not feel safe here. I have never felt like I wasn't safe (then again, I did live in Macon for a few years and got live training). But, I can understand why someone wouldn't feel safe living here. It has definitely gone downhill just in the past 5 years.

8:36 AM
Blogger Miller said...

Maybe not "just" in the last 5 years. But its been very evident in the 5 years I have lived in the Gump how far down that hill it has gone during that time. I live on the North side, and we will visit East Gump, but we don't go down to the South end of town. Generally don't go further S than Vaughn Rd.

I had a gun put to the back of my head just off of Zelda Rd (near Moe's) while visiting my then girlfriend. Luckily all they wanted was money, which I did not have. Either way, I always look around when I'm in that town anymore. That's definitely not the case in all of the other cities I frequent (which are many) except Detroit.

wow....couldn't get on last night and missed all the gump hatin!
My take is that we wanted to retire here after AF because it was close to Ga family and AU
What were we thinkin? I cant believe a capitol city could be so small town and I actually think downtown has improved since we've been here!

9:02 AM
Blogger War Eagle Girl said...

Thank goodness for Bright...I can see how Folmar kept this town in the dark all these years
Of course, as soon as our son is done at AU then we are out of here
I don't encourage my kids to come back as I don't see how anyone can have upward movement here unless they are in a state or federal job

9:03 AM
Blogger War Eagle Girl said...

Montgomery doesn't scare me....I've lived in LA (Calif) and Washington DC
It's just that if you are not in the Montgomery Elite then nothing here will happen for you because they still think of it as a small town (which essentially it is!!)
Guess ya'll shouldn't have gotten me started!

Official Visitor List for 1/16/09:
___________________________________
We have some big time recruits coming this weekend (stars from Rivals):

**** Emory Blake WR (Has Colorado and Texas Tech interest listed as high, Auburn low)
*** Nosa Eguae DE (Has Minnesota high, Neb, Tex and AU medium)
*** Donald Ford LB (Committed (SP?) to Auburn)
*** Anthony Gulley RB (Auburn high, Troy medium)
**** Dequinta Jones DT (Committed to Michigan, Auburn and Arkansas low)
**** Brandon Moore OT (UA, AU, Clem, UF, Miami medium)
**** Tana Patrick LB (UA, AU, Miami, USC medium)
*** John Sullen OG (Committed to USM, doesn't have offer from us)
*** Demond Washington ATH (Committed to Ole Miss, AU low, Rivals reporting he will probably change committments after this weekend)

And presenting the new addition:
Hargrave 5 star receiver DeAngelo Benton, originally committed to LSU, he was Rivals' number three overall prep school player in 2008

9:09 AM
Blogger Miller said...

There is little to no upward movement in a state job.
Bright may have assisted the revitalization project going on downtown, but it has at the expense of the rest of the town. Bright is part of what's wrong with Montgomery.

yes, miller you are right but I would have hated to see downtown deteriorate with all the beautiful buildings
But I was not in favor of the Renassince (sp) Hotel either but I do love the ballpark
It's the school situation that will never be turned around and I am glad I don't have that over my head anymore! My son got a full scholarship to AU but because of private school

9:17 AM
Blogger War Eagle Girl said...

so lloooowwww property taxes have got us in this situation and now the private schools are too ensconced in the area and people don't want to up taxes for better schools. Of course, with our school board who would trust them to spend the money wisely either!!

Didn't realize the Gump was so dangerous. I grew up in Prattville in the 60-70's and it was fine. When I was a kid, it was a big deal to go to Shakey's Pizza at Normandale...not now huh? Most any inland southern town that size will lack for entertainment.

Now that I think about it, every friend/relative has moved to the outlying areas/towns...most citing schools as the reason. Wasn't Old Cloverdale doing the intown rebirth thing a few years ago?

I went to Valentine's Day Massacre in Memphis in '99. Also went to a couple of Nitros in Memphis. Those were the days.

I also made my aol screenname RockyM84 for Rocky Maivia as he was known then. I was the only one cheering for him all the way back to when he was in the Nation of Domination.

I haven't watched in years though, since before WCW went under.

Wow, that's some classic stuff Michael. I keep up with it occasionally because its so ridiculous that its entertaining. A friend and I are actually very excited to see an independent show next week before Rumble b/c a bunch of washed out hacks are going to be there. I think Honky Tonk Man is even fighting.

9:36 AM

Tubs discovered Cameron Kinney and now we have let him get away. We seriously need WR playmakers. In fact, Many of the originally maligned Tubs summer camp discoveries have seen their stock rise and some are now wavering. Is this fallout from the PTB actions or lack of attention from the new coaches?

9:37 AM
Blogger astatguy said...

Montgomery is a slow, southern town; nothing more and nothing less. I travel all around the world for my job, and people are mostly nice everywhere. But there are no nicer people than those in Montgomery. I grew up there, left after college, and probably won't live there again, but it stacks up OK with anywhere I've been. Please don't compare it with the hellhole we call "Detroit".

9:38 AM
Blogger michael said...

Wow, bravo to Honky Tonk Man for being alive. There is only a 50/50 shot for wrestlers to make it that far.

Anyone else want to convert this to a wrestling message board while Jay is gone?

9:43 AM
Blogger Brad said...

Stat Guy -

My disdain for Montgomery is not towards the people. They, for the most part, are great. Like you, I grew up there and moved after college. My objection lies with the city's crime record (which is very poor) and general lack of entertainment options (Biscuits, ASF, and that's about it). Also, my only comparison to Detroit was due to safety issues. Not in any other capacity.

Sorry if I offended you, but I don't like my words being misconstrued.

Hoopie...

There is a distinct third possibility ... not dismissing 1 or 2 out of hand, mind you ... and that is other schools are deciding they like Kenney and others and are recruiting them aggressively as well, and that some of those players have affinities for those schools.

10:11 AM
Blogger Monica said...

I've been reading too many threads on Rivals. I'm getting paranoid. I have crazy, cynical thoughts swirling through my head like...

What if players are pulling a Jimmy Sexton? What if LSU wasn't making Benton's offer swagalicious enough and so he announces a visit to Auburn knowing the LSU staff will NOT allow him to switch his commitment?

10:12 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I can't stand getting caught up in the recruiting circus, at the end of the day Auburn will end up with some athletes, and we currenty have a bunch of those and with a good coaching staff anything can happen.

My motto: just wait until signing day, then panic.

10:14 AM

Moving on...huge recruiting weekend! I really hope we pull out all the stops for these WRs especially. I hope these kids really realize the potential to make an early impact in a great program in the best conference in America.

Couple of things I wanted to throw out and get some opinions on:

How much contact can a head coach have with recruits?

* I have been told that Dinky entertained several recruits here in Mobile the night of the BCS championship game at Felix's FishCamp. Is that something that counts toward the in home visit?

* Also the O-Line coach thing I have been told is coming down to Campbell? Anybody else hearing that?

This is some good detective work. I am quite sure Alton Brown had no idea the shelves at publix in one of his bits were so scrutinized.

I'd give someone else's right arm to be on an "official visit" at Auburn right now.

Alton Brown is one of my favorite guys on Food Network.

In Gadsden you can get Conecuh sausage just about everywhere. Good stuff indeed.

Blogger Jet said...

FSJ ...

Just had lunch with some Gadsdenians ... asked them about you ... they said, "Seems to be cashing large checks at the local banks, and hanging out at Gadsden City High."

I said, "Status quo, then?"

Just joshin' ya.

Gran was a great coach with Ronnie and Carnell. But then who wouldn't be?

Seriously, I wish him and his family well. I also hope the Dunn's land well. With Price dumping ISU for OM Coach Dunn lost an opportunity.

Jet - considering your employer, I'm guessing that you and your lunchmates had to hurry back from lunch so you wouldn't be late for your breaks.

Gatiger ...

Ouch ... the Peoples Republic was well served during my lunch.

1:34 PM
Blogger Monica said...

When did Conecuh Sausage get so popular statewide?????

1:34 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Jet - I guess that depends. If you're still in the tall building, it depends on whether you ate upstairs or downstairs.

1:38 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Gran also took a RB that couldn't start at South Carolina and turned him into a NFL back. Until this past year I think he had a pretty good body of work at Auburn.

Yesterday ... upstairs ... today, the new hotel.

My presence is, for a lack of a better phrase, desired.

Why? I don't know.

Monica, I checked out Conecuh's website and found out that it is literally made right in your home town.

Here's one of my favorites from my neck of the woods (not my hometown, but very close): http://www.martinspretzelspa.com/

You just can't pretzels like Martin's in Alabama.

1:50 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jet, what exactly is it that you do that your presence is desired?

I thought the first rule of the Red Elephant Club is "There is no Red Elephant Club."

1:53 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

It is...but I am a rebel.

1:54 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Jet - isn't that somewhat redundant? I mean, how many unimportant people have chaffeurs? Of course, this doesn't count when they're being chaffeured to their local county hotel for a mandatory 8 hour stay.

1:56 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Isn't "somewhat redundant" an oxymoron? It's either redundant or not, right?

At this point, MarianP sends us both into the hallway, I figure.

Luv - That's why I'm so surprised (and happy) to hear that Conecuh is so popular state wide now! They are old friends of my Mother's family. They used to do their thing on Castleberry Road in Hog Springs - a suburb of Everygreen. Now they seem to have branched out to the Evergreen metro area. :-)

Thanks so much. Now I have to have a pretzel! grrrr

That's funny, classic stuff right there.

Monica,

If you are not careful you will have Castleberry being annexed by Evergreen.

My daughter is addicted to CS, she gets and cooks her own every morning and has seen been doing that since she was 8 yo.

Prattville-Millbrook-Wetumpka-Montgomery = The River Region

Evergreen-Hog Springs-Castleberry = The Sausage Region

Of course.

I can't help myself, Cory.

Does anyone here get as annoyed as I do when people refer to our women's teams as the "Lady Tigers"? They have never been that...it's only Tigers. Sorry about the diatribe, but I was reading an article about the b'ball team, and it disturbed me.

Michael - BC plays football?

2:41 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Brad, they were the Lady Tigers until some time in the 1990s, as I recall.

2:43 PM

Yea -- the name was changed officially a few years ago. They were the "Lady Tigers" for a long while.

I gotta say that your new avatar makes you look like one of those mad Russian KGB guys that followed Rocky around while he was training to fight Drago. Love it!

Brad - I don't care if it was official or not, I never liked "Lady Tigers". I didn't like in high school when they called our girls basketball team the Lady Tigers.

I say Auburn Tigers by five points tomorrow.

12-for-20 at the line, which Lebo will classify as "improvement."
