Daily update, 3/25

Hey everyone. Thanks for making yesterday a nice traffic day here at the HABOTN, where spring football took top billing. Judging from how the basketball team finished its game last night, football was the right choice.

So what do we have today?

Let's go through what a few other Auburn peeps had to say about the team's first practice. Before you ask, the team is scheduled to practice again on Thursday afternoon. Gene Chizik told me last night that he will not practice in the indoor facility -- "We're not going to hold any glorified walk-throughs during the spring," he said -- and thunderstorms are expected to take hold today. Rain chances around here are 75% each day through Saturday.

Keep that in mind.

TROOPER TAYLOR SPEAKS
  • On practice: "It was organized, the guys knew where to go, they understood what each horn meant, so that's a big thing. Just learning how to practice is just as big as getting out there and doing X's and O's.

  • On his willingness to make players to pushups during practice (as you saw in yesterday's video): "I was taught a long time ago whatever you tolerate or accept, you encourage. Dropped balls, turnovers, stupid penalties will not be accepted at Auburn University. Those receivers know that after today. It's a point of emphasis to me. You have to get what you emphasize. What they do with the ball after the catch, that's why you sign them. That's called NLI - national letter of intent. But teaching the fundamentals, how to take care of the football, how to practice, how to win, and try to practice like a game. That's what I was trying to emphasize out there."

TOMMY TROTT SPEAKS
  • On his physical situation: "I was ahead of schedule big time. I think right now I'm probably where I need to be. We backed off a little bit. It was hurting me a little bit. Slowed it down. They took out that patella tendon, so just that pressure on the knee from where that used to be, it started giving me trouble, got a little tendinitis in there."

  • On what he's hoping to accomplish right now: "I've been watching. There are little drills I can do. Little get off the line drills, work on your releases. They don't want me to be involved in any contact at this point. It's not ready for contact, ready to be messing with going this way and that way. They don't want me making 100 percent cuts. They don't want me coming out of a dig route or anything like that on the left knee."

IN OTHER NEWS
The real-word HABOTN reference keep coming. Here we have Tab, an official HOTTIE, reppin' the blog at the recent Exceptional Foundation Chili Cook Off in Birmingham. This is the Alagasco crew, which won the "people's choice" award for their southwestern chowder.

Thanks, Tab!

11:18 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I posted earlier tonight about a lunch date with someone with many contacts inthe athletic dept. We discussed the coaching hires and what not, but we alos ripped the AD and AU's lack of a PR person.
I firmly believe AU does a VERY poor job in the PR dept.
Anyone else think that?

...and that wraps up work for the week. I wonder if I should stick to my plan if being a good citizen tomorrow and helping people, or if I should go fishing? I'm leaning towards fishing.

11:19 PM

I agree with that WTC. At least it would appear that way from the outside looking in and that's usually a good way to judge "PR"...

wtc, the PR could be a whole lot worse. it's not extremely proactive, but I think the low profile helps Auburn athletics more than it hurts.

11:28 PM
Blogger wtc said...

PF, why wold that be the case. I would think that a low profile is good for the internals of the AU dept, but AU needs more national recognition and the only way to get it to have PR people put your name out so that you are top of mind and your name becomes familiar to everyone.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

wtc,

I just think AU is looked at now as an upstanding, humble institution. The lack of high profile has allowed things to roll off more quickly that would have stayed around longer at a more high profile institution that is constantly touting itself (The FSU sanctions come to mind). Sure, the 2004 thing happened, but that's one game (really, I don't think this year's NCAABB controversy was real, AU was borderline and got bumped out, and probably correctly). I know everyone is always crying about TV coverage and respect, but AU gets it's share. We'd never be satisfied with that. I don't know, just my opinion. I like the humble image that is produced. Most people I've come across know that Auburn is a fine institution across the board and leave it at that.

11:42 PM
Blogger michael said...

You gonna use that primarily for hot dogs, FSJ?

11:43 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

the best thing that Auburn's PR machine can do is to convince the AD and Coaches to work on scheduling games that would garner attention. BBall tourneys in early season with TV coverage and solid OCC Football games. Baseball, Gymnastics, Softball, Swimming and Diving, and others already do this, and are well recognized nationally among folks that keep up with that sort of thing.

11:43 PM
Blogger BigEZ said...

I can't remember my age, I dunno 12? I collected cards and I just thought they had the coolest uniforms. We didn't have cable until I was 16, so I would only catch a game if it was a playoff game or something. I've been a fan since before Bam Morris went to jail. I remember how bad it hurt losing that SB to the Cowboys. Actually a pro fan before college, not an AU fan until 98'.

11:45 PM
Blogger shesaid said...

Nice, Faker. What contest are you entering in May?

11:45 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Yes, the bball thing was overblown. Even though we played on TV once, I thought going deepeer into the NIT woul dbe better than a 1 and done in the NCAAs.

Better OOC games would be a great start. The swim team and others win and everyone knows who they are. But you have to go out and play anyone anywhere anytime. I AM NOT saying schedule a killer game each week, but The Citadel, Samford, come on. UAT played Duke and they may be just a bball school, but the get more respect then Citadel & Samford.

Just this new contest here in Gadsden.

The grand prize is $8000..

No way in hell we will win it..

Gotta come up with a team name first..

Any suggestions?

11:52 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

true Michael. I guess there are two sides to that. For a team like Auburn, it really depends on what the rest of the country is doing. If there are multiple unbeatens, then they should play OCC better. If there are are no unbeatens, then Woo-Hoo, you can't leave an undefeated or 1 loss SEC team out. You just can't.

For those PR machine schools (cough UF cough), you can schedule 4 citadels and still play for the national title. They suck, though, and are an evil, evil enterprise. Jeremy Foley does bad things with the devil to keep that athletic department on the up and up.

If you play a weaker OOC schedule, then the PR machine has to work hard to keep your name in the fore front. Ours has not been in the front for good things.
Look to the west of us and see what kind of sales job they are doing. I do not compare us to them like the sports call in shows, but I se how they market themselves and they doa pretty fair job.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

haha oh no, thats definitly not the case. But I just tend to stick to the same cheap whiskey, the ones I know I can stomach, I don't branch out too much (unless its free).

I've had many a drunken night thanks to whiskeys such as evan williams, heaven hill and early times.

on the contrary, you should believe that this is all I drink. you are not allowed to drink expensive whiskey in the BCC. Barron's Country Club. we even have our own dumpster diving team.

we have a pool out back, but it's just for run off. i wouldn't recommend swimming though. who am i kidding, just because it has a fence around it doesn't mean it's a pool, it's a big hole full of algae and whatnot.

Considering a Wal Mart run for the new Eric Church cd.

I never buy cd's, but my computer is currently out of commission, so my cd download capabilities are currently curtailed.

A Good Morning to all.

I think I heard Chizik say that they wouldn't be using the indoor facility. Why not? Does that mean they're gonna practice in the rain today?

Just watched Rep. Brown from Fl do her bit. This time I actually listened to the whole thing. Kinda scary that she is a graduate, and isn't joking. I hope she was just nervous. And I'm certain the people of her district are thrilled, that THIS is what she's going to be known for during her time in DC. I thought everyone was joking about the 1...2345

On the first page someone posted Rep Corrine Brown's comments about her University and how acomplished it is (from YouTube).

Luv ...

Go to youtube, and search Corinne Brown ... and watch one of the finest performances ever on the floor of the U.S. Congress.

Also, note that Congressman Bobby Bright of Montgomery is the "speaker" of the moment.

Be sure to send her a letter of gladulations for her statemanship.
