HABOTN is going dark today
Hey everyone. Due to a surprising and unforeseen medical issue, I was not able to attend today's Auburn scrimmage ... or even make the trip to Auburn.
This represents the first time since 1999 that I have missed an assignment.
I'm sorry to those of you who depend on me for daily coverage.
I'm planning to get back in the fray Sunday and resume the coverage you expect and deserve.

Ontario had nearly 100 yards on 2 rushes....
Eltoro is flying all over the place, gettin' everyone on the Defensive side Crunk.
Before the scrimmage, Rap music was thumpin' from the speakers to excite the recruits that were there.
**Recruits at scrimmage included (4 Star DE) Anthony Williams, (5 Star/#1 RB in the Country) Lache Seastrunk, (4 Star/#2 WR in the Country) Trovon Reed, (4 Star RB) Corey Grant, WR Marc Gooch, LB Jawara White, CB Jonathan Mincy, (4 Star WR) Antonio Goodwin and (4 Star WR) Markeith Ambles.**
Mike McNeil was taken off in an Ambulance, wearing an Air Cast, possible broken leg or ankle. Sad No
Neiko Thorpe had a 50-60 yard Int. returned for a TD.
Antonio Coleman put a Lot of pressure on the QBs and had 2 Sacks.
Cameron Henderson had an Int., eventhough he's playing with a high ankle sprain.
Hawthorne had a long catch and was receiving praise from Coach Troop.
The Defense won the scrimmage 61-34
Thanks, AWK.
Haven't seen you in ages.
Nice reporting AWK! Did Harry Adams actually catch any passes? Did the recruits seem to enjoy the practice?
No problem, Jay. I have been lurking as usual. What illness did you catch? I am watching the master's pondering if I could beat Tiger in match play... I'm guessing not.
Take care of yourself JG. Don't push it too fast. We'll survive if you miss tomorrow too.
Thanks for the great report Awk.
No OL on that recruit list. :-(
Get well soon, JayG.
Thank you AWK for filling us in.
AWK, thanks for the report. Sounds like there were some big-time prospects present today. Jay, hope you feel better soon. I will look around elsewhere for reports on today, but I miss your input on Auburn happenings. Appreciate all the great info you provide.
Get well soon, JGT! Enjoy the beautiful weather!
Thanks for the well wishes...
Nicely done AWK. JGT I hope you feel better. I can't believe -11 under is the score and Tiger is 7 back.
Sounds like Justin Albert will be a contributor this upcoming fall. Also, I'd like to hear more on the Bull. Is he simply the master of Crunkness, or is he a player that's going to make a splash?
He can damn sure create enough crunkedness to shimmy the crowd. And he can pulverize a still target like nobody's business.
In response to Bigcat, Caudle threw the Pick 6 to Thorpe, because the pass was a timing pattern pass and when Caudle threw it, Harry Adams Zigged instead of Zagging, so the ball was were the WR should've been.
Also, it seems that Kodi Burns is having trouble fumbling the snaps. This could be due to the fact that AC was coming around the edge like a lunatic.
And I quote from someone, "Eltoro was running around like a Wild Banshee."
Hmm...
Kodi's always had trouble with the snap.
That team needs the Bull to be everything Blackmon just couldn't consistently be.
Thanks AWK,
JGT.. get well soon...
AWK ...
A correspondent like you needs to be in a trench coat, speaking so authoritatively. We are grateful for your reportage.
Jay G, be well.
Jay,
You may have an extra day or so to recover. The AU website says that due to Easter tomorrow they won't practice again until Tuesday evening. Hope you feel better.
Auburn BB won its first game 8-7 against Florida with a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the 11th. However, they are getting killed 19-2 in the bottom of the 7th in the 2nd game.
Get well soon, Jay!
Diarrhea Jay?
If it's a tummy issue, don't go back and read the posts from late last night. Way too much rich food talk. I gained a pound just reading!
Thanks for the report AWK we do appreciate it.
Hope you get better soon Jay G.
Cincy I almost got a stomach ache just reading that Stuff.
They were definitely on a roll (a Tootsie Roll) or pb and choc spin.
Holy cow! Awk and Crudup back in the same day!?! Welcome back fellas.
Jay G. Don't be sorry! Even Spiderman gets sick now and then. Just take care of yourself.
A little post scrimmage la ti da. Mike McNeil suffered a serious knee injury...sucks. Also, they apparently are limiting the QB race to two.
Thanks Monica. I hope Jay doesn't get mad about this...

Hope u get well soon Jay...Being sick sucks.
Something that will make you feel a little better. Apparently Steve Jobs is indeed going to make a return to Apple in June......at least according to the WSJ.
I was very doubtful about his return when he took his leave.
just saw the latest on mike mcneil's broken leg over on scout. mark murphy reports his sources say it was a clean break and he should be good to go in 6-8 weeks of recovery. i think i speak for everyone wishing him a speedy recovery.
AU also had some big time recruits in the house today. the pay sites say seastrunk RB and reed WR will be in auburn all weekend. can't hurt our chances with them.
Well, so much for getting through spring practice without any injuries to key personnnel.
Jay G, I hope you are doing better.
Kodi Burns seems to continue to have trouble with the routine things that should not even be an issue. Footwork, fumbling snaps, etc.
I wish Mike McNeil's injury had been a broken bone. 5 months until the season begins, he won't be ready for the season.
Ok, it is not a knee injury. Please, whoever reported the knee injury, get it right. lol.
Nats 0-5.
It's going to be a looonnng season.
So is Trotter or Caudle the #2?
Ant - Great Auburn pics on your Facebook. Who is the kid?
Digger - having an ice cold Smithwick's in a frosted mug just for you.
Get well Jay. We need you in the starting lineup.
I hate to hear of McNeil's injury. I do hope it is a break and not the knee.
Injuries happen when players are playing hard. Those that survive will be tougher for the experience.
I am curious about the interceptions. The one Caudle through to the right spot where the receiver cut the wrong way doesn't seem to be a deciding factor. Other interceptions might be. I am anxious to find out more.
As for Kodi, I am discouraged with him because I get the impression he is still making freshman type mistakes. We need a leader out there.
Watching the acting brilliance of Yul Brynner in The Ten Commandments. So let it be written, let it be done.
godspeed JGT & McNeil.
so, on the QBs, i'm guessing Burns & Trotter? is Caudle going to get 'pooped on' again? we wait with great anticipation....
Denny, they don't make them like Heston and Brenner anymore. What a combo.
Edward G. Robinson as well.
Nova, I am starting to think Caudle will be #1 and Trotter #2. I get the impression the Malzahn is not happy with the quarterbacks. Tyrik and Todd may get a good luck in the fall.
Jay GT - best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Follow-up to yesterday...
Ate BBQ at Bunn's in Windsor, NC. It was dee-licious on cornbread and their brunswick stew was absolutely superb.
On the way home ate supper at The Pit in Raleigh, an upscale BBQ joint (there really shouldn't be such a thing) where you must have reservations! It was ok, not bad, but certainly not as good as Bunn's or Hursey's in Burlington.
I know no one cares, or at least no one should, but I find it curious that the local residents of Windsor pronounce the county name, Bertie, as BerTEE, but they pronounce the Cashie River as the CASHeye with a long i sound at the end. Most peculiar.
Kodi will not fall out of the top 2 I'm afraid. He's become a master of program politics.
I'd take Tyrik now considering the OL is only one injury away from potentially a disastrous season. They will need a QB with poise, and one who can make the throws. A high school senior is the only one I can say that can right now.
Notes ...
1. Tar Heel ... I agree ... upscale BBQ joint shouldn't exist. If a table cloth exists, it should be red and white checkered, or coated in plastic. And I love me some Brunswick stew.
2. Steve, I guess I'm confused to why anyone thinks Todd is in the plans for the fall.
Lache Seastrunk, come on down!!!!!!!! The best visit of his lifetime
Where did you see that, Bark?
auburn undercover, mon. luper's dad is seastrunk's preacher. it sounds realllly good.
wassup hawties?
Bin ...
The HOTTEST Chef on the Gulf Coast!
What was for din din?
bbq rule #1. if it looks like a dirty, smokey, rat-infested hell-hole, it must be good because somehow it is still open and people are not going there for the ambiance. usually the food at bbq joints is inversely proportional to the cleanliness of the establishment.
and don't anyone go falling into the tyrik trap yet unless you are content with a 3-9 or 4-8 season. we've all seen what rsfr starting QBs generally accomplish and a true frsh gets eaten alive in the sec 99.9999999999% of the time no matter how good they and their coaches are. even upperclassmen that are 1st year starters have a learning curve regardless of talent (tebow tech went 9-4 his 1st year as full time qb). that is why i think it is so important for gus to throw the kitchen sink at them all and see who handles it best. it's about finding the guy that gives AU the best chance to win this year without writing off the season before it starts.
Chip chip
1. Absolutely.
2. I concur.
Jet, Todd was the best QB we had last season when he was healthy. Yea, it is sad to say, but true. I am going by impressions I get from Malzahn, but I think he sees the same problems with Kodi that Borges and Franklin saw.
Trotter is the wildcard in my mind. I have no idea how good he is, although he is probably the lowest regarded QB in terms of recruiting. I am hoping he ends up being a surprise.
The fact that we still have a 3 quarterback race this late in the spring says to me that the coaches don't really like any of them.
chip, I agree about Tyrik. And playing a QB too early can destroy his confidence. I am just of the opinion we don't have an option at QB yet.
vegetable trophia (basil pesto pasta) , pretty killer. Looks like the scrimmage went ok, aside from mikes leg, hopefully it's a clean break and will heal up quick.
i'm with chipchip on both of his assesments.
Steve,
I didn't think Todd was any better than Kodi in the ULM game, but clearly was better in the So. Miss. game. After that, it looked to me that his arm was shot.
I don't know ... my guess is that they're trying to give Caudle every chance to be the guy -- but if he can't do it soon, then they will move on with Kodi and Trotter.
I may be dead wrong, but I'm curious to find out if I am or not.
Todd had lost it by the second half of the LSU game. Currently I am thinking it will be Burns backed up by Caudle in an offense that will be geared to an option attack. I think Malzahn is trying to avoid that, but currently I don't think he sees an option. I really am hoping Trotter surprises and Caudle can execute the offense, but my impression so far is they don't have a QB that can do it.
In other words, I think we will end up running the run for your life Kodi bone if something doesn't change.
As for the MSU game, penalties were are biggest issue. A lot of it was Ziemba. We were constantly put in long yardage situations.
But we got good pitching against State
I just don't see how Malzahn can want to make it a two-man competition at QB now, then open it back up into a three-man competition in the fall. I am not saying it won't happen, I just feel like he is really going to want to have his primary QB named and ready by early fall practice.
and AU scored all 5 points...
I am uhhh freaking out about Lache Seastrunk...maybe this will help me get over the loss of OKU...
MAYBE
I'm going to bed ... some stupid bunny rabbit has been bouncing around my house ... I got tired of it and shot him.
Not nice JEt
Was up against Gran for Oku. We won't win many of those.
I hope the HOTTIES found some offensive linemen, speedy and sure-handed wide receivers, a few extra linebackers, and, of course, a long snapper in their Easter baskets this morning.
Any HOTTIES in the Opelika-Auburn area, after your Easter lunches, please report to Plainsman Park.
You may be needed to pitch this afternoon.
No football players in my basket, just Reeses eggs.
A chill just went down my spine.
Auburn does not have a SEC caliber Quarter Back.
And thoughts of a cold Smithwick Beer in a frosted glass drank in my honor.
My hope has been that the QB problem was a coaching problem. My fear is that it is not.
I'm still hoping for now.
Sad news
Connie Frederick died last night of an apparent heart attack
What memories this great player brings back to me.
Prayers for the family
I think the issues with the quarterbacks are coachable, but I had expected at this point for Kodi to be the man. I do think Borges and Franklin recognized the issues with Kodi, and that caused conflict with Tuberville.
Caudle has been an even bigger disappointment because when he was recriuted, he was billed as the heir apparent to Cox. He hasn't come close to living up to that. If they didn't scrimmage in JHS, I am not sure he would know where it is.
Trotter is the wildcard. He wasn't rated as a top notch QB. The fact that he is still in the race shows why I am so concerned about the QB.
Maybe Trotter is exceeding expectations and keeping himself in the race.
Continuing to look on the bright side.
The bright side? Franklin isn't the QB coach.
Jay G, I hope all is better.
HOPPY EASTER
Digger ...
Thanks for letting us know about Connie ... my first Auburn game was the 49-26 victory over the Infidels in 1969 ... the game where he faked a punt on his own initiative and ran 87 yards for a touchdown to make it 49-20. A great day.
SteveFC..not trying to call you out, but I just read last nights "QB" posts and struggled with your comments. At 9:36 you concluded that Caudle was #1 and Trotter #2. At 11:15 you stated that it was Burns backed up by Caudle.
We'll know who the QB is when the coaches decide. It is a new system/coach and to date, probably no player distinguishing himself over the others..therefore it is reasonable for it to take a while. Even after a QB is picked, the coaches may change their mind. Either way, we'll never have valid opinions on it because we aren't at the practices and in the hudddles. Becuse we have practically no information to evaluate, this excercise is totally futile speculation.
I was wondering the same thing, Hoopie. Which is it, SteveFC? Covering all of your bases? :-)
Jet,
you are welcomed
He was one fine player and young man. I know he must have grown up to be a fine man.
I remember that play like it happened yesterday, the group I was with all said Shug didn't call that play he took off on his own. And we were right.
What I said was I could see Caudle #1 and Trotter #2. I see no indication that the issues with Kodi have been addressed.
Jet, the game you are referring to was the most points ever scored against a bear bryant team.
It seems that we will end of with a smash mouth offense with Kodi running for his life no other QB steps up. From what I have read, I don't think that one has.
The thing is, I would have expected Todd to be Kodi's only competition. Since Todd has been out for the spring, I am shocked that the QB race has been a race.
Basically I am saying it is up in the air and it wouldn't surprise for Kodi to be #3, but if he is #1, look for smash mouth. I believe I referred to it as the run for your life Kodi bone.
Still don't under stand, but that's OK...I'm gonna go watch the Masters.
Malzahn wants a QB that can run the spread. Kodi isn't it. If he goes with Kodi, we will be an option team. Caudle being the guy would say spread. Trotter is the wildcard.
It depends upon where Malzahn goes with the offense. I think he isn't seeing what he wants.
Malzahn isn't going to change his entire offense to suit one of our QB's. He'll pick the one who is the most capable of running it without making mistakes.
I think you're just trying to read too much into it. Malzahn probably isn't even 100% sure who is the closest to becoming that guy, so there's no point in us trying to guess right now.
Besides, when Lache Seastrunk comes, we won't even need a QB. We can just snap it directly to him and let him run wild.
Malzahn has changed his offense in the past to suit the players he had. Actually, it is what a good coach does.
