Post No. 1,173
Hey everyone. A few players were made available prior to the Tigers' Tuesday evening practice. The theme was quarterbacks. I'm sure you're happy to hear that.
Let's just get to it:
- It's clear to me that Kodi Burns believes he has accomplished enough to be named the team's top quarterback. Though he remains diplomatic with his answers about the so-called quarterback race, Burns is brimming with confidence these days.
11Being a leader is what I'm doing best," he said Tuesday. ``When I walk out there on the field, the offensive guys look me in the face and know we can get it done." - Burns on the plusses of having a clear No. 1 guy during the summer: ``The advantage is the extra work. If you have one guy established, you're going to be that guy. The No. 1s will go with the No. 1s all the time. It would be a lot easier if you have one guy to get your timing and your cohesiveness down."
- I've never seen a quarterback pooped on more than Neil Caudle in 2008. His offensive coordinator sold him out. Caudle never had a shot. When the team's fortunes soured in October, Auburn coaches considered activating Barrett Trotter, then a true freshman, rather than Caudle. Nevermind that Caudle was in his third college season.
``I know we were a little bit desperate, but it was kind of disheartening for that to happen," Caudle said Tuesday. ``I think it all worked out in the end. This is a new year." - The three healthy scholarship quarterbacks (Burns, Caudle, Trotter) split reps evenly during Saturday's scrimmage.
- Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn says he's grading each quarterback's performance on a daily basis. Those grades apparently are not being shared with the players.
Trotter on his Saturday scrimmage grade: ``Couldn't tell you."
Trotter on if he finds that annoying: ``You'd like to know. At the same time, either way, you know, you're going to keep working hard and doing what you're going to do. Hopefully it wouldn't affect that much of my work ethic. I'm going to work hard either way."

Sam, the decision would be easy if he had someone who was clearly the better option at QB.
Welcome back, Seanzie. How was your extended weekend?
Yeah the one year of the Bowden/Oliver is what I meant. That's how stricken from my memory I made it.
Luv, I had a great time. I didn't make it to the golf course, I don't know if that's a bad thing.
Ahh, Brotha Bill. Those were the (not so) good ol' days. What's he up to nowadays?
RK's account was the era of AU football that I was in school. A few good football times, may forgettable ones.
My years in school were good ones for football, 2003-2006.
I was blessed to have been there from 83-88. And no I don't feel like talking about why I have 5 years listed and only having received a bachelors degree
Seanzie, maybe that's why you had such a good time! LOL
Wow we're all having to actually work this morning?
Naw not me, I'm in catch-up mode. Working through my e-mail and basically just getting acclimated to the office again.
I've got that gunk that's been working it's way through our office. I'm debating going home and watching the HABOTN there.
mrtommyd, that sounds like a great idea!
Do you have enough coffee for all that, Seanzie?
Luv, that's a great question, and while I'm not sure I've got enough quality coffee, the motor oil machine is still functioning.
Do we have any baseball fans in the house? The Braves have taken two gems from the Phillies in the last week. Exciting times!
I was there 94-98, so the entire Bowden era.
Roughly the entire Bowden era.
I've been thoroughly enjoying watching the Braves. And yes I have to temper my excitement somewhat like I do for Auburn football. I'm just happy they aren't blowing leads and letting things get out of hand at the end of the game. However there are still 160 to go, so it's a very nice thing to see, but I'm not going to go "Braves to the Series!!" by a long shot.
Back to football, I really feel like if we get off to a strong start and can get some offensive production, we'll be in the thick of things in the west.
Cool RK, I was there 95-99.
Seanzie, big Braves fan here. They won't be flying under the radar for long.
Re: Braves, I concur but it's good to do well during opening week. I believe they can win tonight with Vasquez on the hill.
I have been laying low. I have not had a lot to add to everyones great insight. But I talked to Caulde old highschool coach last night and he is going to be up for practice on Thursday and Saturday. I am hoping he can give me some unbiased opinions about the quarterback race. I will let you know
The only "radar" the Braves are flying under is in the media. The teams in their division and league know full well what that team is about and what they are capable of. You don't make the offseason moves they made without garnering attention
i was at AU from 96-2000. small world, eh? at least we had Dameyune Craig. i love that guy.
RE: Braves. i love watching them every nite but since they started this Peachtree TV crap i hardly see them. i miss the days of TBS every nite. grrrr.....
I had just sent an email to a friend of mine about how much I hate it that TBS decided the Braves were too regional, so they dropped their coverage.
I was at Auburn from 1996 - 2000. Awesome times, even if football was not as great as possible. The worst thing about the whole deal is that I played on a high school team that consistantly was a loosing record team and I thought when I got to Auburn, that I was done with that. Apparently I brought my bad luck with me.
it's a cruel world RK. too regional my heiney.
Well the regional thing over the Braves is garbage, they got dropped because they didn't win and Ted no longer has a vested interest in the team.
well, at least we can watch the 2 minute summaries on atlantabraves.com. better than nothing. espn360 has the yankees/orioles from last nite. got that on now. it won't let me watch the mets game, though. dunno.
I hate I can't hear the Braves in Baltimore anymore. I miss the days being able to hear Pete, Skip, Don was here for a stop with the Nationals, and Joe.
Smoothie - The O's Yanks game was a dream come true. Not sure how many of those will happen this year.
Love the pitching acquisitions, and I'm very pleased with the fielding. I was all set to watch us win playing small ball but you know 5 HR every two games is fine with me too. I think the only thing that is a concern is if injuries start up like last year.
Imagine when they get Hudson back!
I love the pitchers. They went out and got some guys that throw a bunch of innings, don't get hurt. They've got some great younger players who are all playing well. Last year's team had too many players on geriatrics. I just can't wait for Hudson to come back and join this line up.
ehyou, great minds huh?
Let's not get carried away, it's just two games into the season...160 to go. They still have a lineup that I'm not sure can score a ton of runs and they are going to need that pitching and especially the bullpen to prove themselves.
The problem with pitchers who are throwing a lot of innings without getting hurt is there is a lot of wear and tear on that arm and eventually it gives.
SPeaking of the Braves, we don't get them in Montgomery anymore. No local radio stations carry them. I did find them on the web last night. I think WGST (ATL radio station) is carrying all the games. I will try to find the link and post it for you.
Yeah Derek Lowe is a friggin machine. Jurrjens did great last night. I'm interested to see how Vazquez and Kawakami do. I also heard that Glavine is progressing quite well. And I again I have to remind myself there are still 160 games, but the overall feeling is a good one. Hopefully they don't decide to play down o the level of their competition when the Nationals come to town
RK, you're ruining the Kool-Aid.
Here is the site.
http://www.640wgst.com/pages/listenlive.html
Hope this helps some of you.
The Line-Up isn't Stellar at the 1-2 spots, but 3-6 is about as good as you'll find in the NL and the 7 and 8 guys aren't bad. Fran is the wildcard. If he can hit with his revamped stance and sustain close to .300, this team will score plenty of runs.
I think the Braves will be a decent team, but they are in the same division with the Mets and the defending champion Phillies.
Much rather watch "Family Guy" reruns on TBS than Braves.
Though I did tune into Peachtree and caught Chipper's ding dong -- er, home run.
This season for the Braves will come down to if the bullpen can hold a lead, if Chipper stays healthy and if Franceour can come back from a bad year.
Phillies won't replicate, their line-up is vastly overrated Cole Hamels isn't right. Mets...well the Mets are chokers and are annual underacheivers.
Also one team that will give the rest of the NL east fits, are the Florida Marlins, that's a good team and will be in the hunt.
If you look "choke" up in the dictionary, you'll see a line that says "see Atlanta Braves post season record 1991-2005".
I thought you'd be looking at a short history of the Cubs franchise?
The Cubs don't choke...you have to do something in the regular season to choke in the post season.
Until the expanded the post season, the Cubs made a run every 10 years or so.
I'm a life long Cubs and Red Sox hater, mainly because I hate the fact that the national media tries to force the loveable losers down peoples throats. Until the Sox finally won the World Series, every time either team got close, it seemed like they were begging you to jump on the bandwagon.
Is HABOTN now the Hottest Atlanta Braves (blog) On the Net?
Who's going to be our long-snapper?
Who is the designated wedge buster?
Onside kick return team?
Dax will be the long snapper. A walk-on or Freshman LB will be the wedge buster, our "hands team" will be the onside kick return team.
I want to be the long snapper. Everybody loves the long snapper, plus practices are a breeze.
The long snapper will be former Atlanta Brave Glenn Hubbard.
The wedge buster will be Bob Horner.
The onside kick team will be Rafael Furcal, Rafael Belliard & Rafael Ramirez.
I arrived at AU as a Bammer and converted to AU during the BARFIELD YEARS, while Bama won the MNC in '78-'79.
It was the loyal, head-held-high, non-complaining AU fans of that era that won me over.
Long snapper -- Biff Pocoroba
Wedge buster -- Larvell "Sugar Bear: Blanks
Onside kick return -- Claudell Washington, Bob Horner and Chopper Campbell
Jet, nice Biff Pocoroba reference...back when the Braves consistently had catches who hit .190 with 3 HR's and 20 RBI's.
Since I'm not a baseball fan, I haven't had anything to add. So, I'm going to pose this question and see what you guys think.
What do you think a basketball game between the men of UNC and the women of UCONN would be like?
UNC would win by at least 60.
Luv, that game would be ugly. I'd take UNC by 30+.
a snoozer ending in UNC winning 100-0.
I guess being a woman, I was hoping they'd do better than that, but alas...
LuvAU1968, that whole "anything you can do, i can do better" Gatorade commercial was not real. Women cannot play sports with men. Just ask Michelle Wie.
i was in my mid-late 20's when i started to really get in to MLB. i never played little league and rejected the Braves-mania in school because everyone else was into it. i had try-outs for my MLB fandom but the Braves eventually won me over. now i can barely catch them on tv. bummer.
there's still hope for you too Luv. ;)
Two completely different games. The mens game is far far more physical than the womens game.
I know at UT they used to say that the women could beat the men, but not to be sexist, but it just wouldn't happen.
You stock just keeps on dropping, Sam.
Michelle Wie struggled for a long time playing with the women, much less with the men.
Michelle Wie can't play with the women!
Monica, I was thinking the same thing!
Well i loves me some badminton. Anyone else? I mean lets talk the westernization of badminton. Lin Dan and Xie XingFang are a couple of asian players that come to mind. Anyone else?
^
That is what baseball talk is like to me.
My stock keeps dropping because I told the same truth that everyone else knows?
You said "Women cannot play sports with men." That's a pretty broad statement. There are lots of women and lots of sports.
But I'm a girl so what the hell do I know.
That's not why your stock is droppin.
Way to go Sam, kill the thread.
Interesting question for the Auburn faithful, will the Auburn offense score more touchdowns than commit turnovers this season?
I know that I'll probably jinx us, but there is no way possible that we can score less TD's than we scored last year.
I think we averaged one per SEC game last year.
gosh i hope so.
with Malzahn i think we'll be much better. last year the kids had no idea what offense they were running. it'll be much better this time around. (fingers crossed)
yes seanzie. I can't wait to see what we do with 3 rb's that weigh 230 #'s
Congrats Sam, you're officially off the hook. We definitely will have to score more points. Even more importantly, we have to make first downs and hold the ball longer.
Last year the coaches had no idea what offense we were running, much less the players.
Commit less penalties...it seemed like last year every time we'd get at least in FG range, we'd get a false start or a holding call on the next play.
I think Ensminger's idea of offense was Off Center, Off Guard, Off Tackle, Zone Read, and on pass plays, everyone go out.
On women vs men in bball: when I was in 8th grade, our boys basketball team scrimmaged the varsity girls team. So we weren't even all the way through puberty, and we beat them pretty easily.
Also, when I was at Auburn, the women's team scrimmaged a group of guys (called Orange Crush maybe?) regularly who were just average Joes going to Auburn, and according to my friend who played, the dudes always won.
So yeah, if UNC tried hard on defense, I am thinking something like 120-15 final score.
Seanzie, I hope our coaches can get our boys to not jump before the snap in a game this year. Wouldn't that be cool?!?!
I blame the Meerkat.
Offense was offensive. Cruitin seems to be pickin up earlier than usual as well. Maybe these guys can get the ball rollin'!
As far as this women vs men topic in sports, I caddied for a lady by the name of Sarah Ingram in the Curtis Cup and I will say that she is by far one of the best putters I have ever seen. I believe that some women can definetly be competive with men in pro sports.
Brand recognition inproving!
Among March visitors who used a search engire to find us, 1,852 of them used "habotn" as the search term.
This is the first time one of the top five search terms has included our actual address.
Take that, Gannett.
I blame Tommy H. Tuberville.
Which was worse, Ensminger last year, or Nallsminger in 2003?
Keep in mind, Nallsminger had a year to prepare, Ensminger had no warning.
"Cruitin seems to be pickin up earlier than usual as well."
Didn't we have something like 20 commits in September last year?
Nallsminger in 2003. That was easy.
Thank you, Eddie. :-)
The meerkat offense SUX with a capital SUH
Though I wouldn't say the Crushers were excellent players, they weren't exactly "average Joes going to Auburn."
That's a guy who's 20 pounds overweight and living for 1 a.m. pizza runs, you know?
Crushers were in great shape, understood the game and probably were really good intramural players.
from the beginning last year was a farce offensively. Remember game one and rotating qb's every series? genius
The Southern Miss game was the harbinger. I should have known after that game we were done.
Tennessee women's team also scrimmages against a team of men in practice a lot. They are good players, but not D-1 type players.
My wife asked me about the guys v gals thing for basketball. And I said in a game with any of the top 25 mens there's a good chance the ladies would lose, just because of the physical differences of the game between the two. However in a skills competition, like the three point thing, or free throws, I have no doubt there is a very good chance the ladies could beat the men.
JG, how did our favorite striker do yesterday?
I mean recruiting overall. Both in what we hear and the quality of guys being recruited. Never remember reading about any of the "top" players at many postions mention auburn except to say they were not in the running in the past. We're at least getting some of those kids to come visit now.
HABOTN takin' over the world huh JAY?
how frustrated was Barrett when he was responding to the question about his grade from the scrimmage?
I'd be frustrated......
I think I started thinking "uh-oh" last year after the 3-2 game against Miss St. From that point I believe I took the view that there was a good chance our boys were not going to win very many games.
It was the opener vs LaMonroe where we only had 3 offensive TD's and no consistent drives that gave us a clue that this year could be a long one.
Chris Todd looked really good early on vs Southern Miss, that gave me hope.
Then we played LSU down to the wire, not knowing that LSU wasn't the LSU we were used to, so we had some false sense of security early on.
mytommy - that was the absolute worst game I've ever attended. pitiful wretched - the mere thought of that game raised my blood pressure
it took me until the Tennessee game to realize how bad we were offensively. I knew that eventually the defense would get worn down and we would stink completely
No RK don't you remember, we weren't showing the whole playbook for the La Monroe game. That's where my Kool-Aid drinking gets me in trouble.
Again not being sexist, but I don't think UConn's women would beat a lower level 1-A team, much less the national champions.
"This is the first time one of the top five search terms has included our actual address"
suuuhhweeeeet
I remember watching that game at Jocks and Jills here in ATL. I must have drank 12 miller lites because of that game and I hate Miller.
yeah i didn't feel bad after the lsu game, a couple weeks later though and i was an angry mess for 3 hrs a week.
were you punishing yourself Seanzie? I hate anything created by Miller.
The HABOTN is catching the rest of the interwebs on fire!! It's funny what good factual information and honest discussion brings, even if the discussion is somewhat biased.
My dad's name was Miller, thanks alot Harrison, I thought we were friends.
I honestly thought the offense would catch on as the season went on, until the Tenn game, I knew after that it could be a painful season. The Vandy game made me hate life.
Wait till DMiller finds out about this. Drama on the HABOTN?
Many, many fans were still in denial after the Vandy game saying "Vandy is a great team this year".
That amazed me that I could watch that same game and people actually thought Vandy was a good team, much less the team we were putting out there.
It was on sale, I'm not a masochist. Although I did watch every second of the Iron Bowl so...
OK, because I'm an idiot ...
I was trying to think of a sport with an objective scoring system where women and men are competitive.
I'm struggling.
Miller beer i meant. Except High Life commercials are cool
Sat and shook my head through the Vandy game, sat stupified as UT-Martin was beating us, checked the score on the UGA game, by the time the Iron Bowl came around I was too beat to watch
Jet- bowling?
Jet - skeet shooting?
Jet- Horseshoes?
I think the UGA game was the worst for me. I put so much hope into that game and I thought we'd pull it out in the end...I was nasty, bitter an inconsolable that day.
I challenge you to a game of horseshoes... a game of horseshooooessss.
song anybody?
Monica, you have mail. I always say this because, otherwise, you wouldn't check it until tomorrow.
Re Orange Crush – Jay G, they were certainly athletes, but the guy I knew that played was only 5’6’’ and could never have made a high school basketball team. But he was a serviceable intramural player. So yeah, it wasn’t taking an average Joe off the street, but he was also incredibly far from being a collegiate athlete.
All to say, I firmly believe most decent high school boys teams could beat the girls UConn team.
Evenly matched sport - The Ididarod
If Kodi could throw a decent fade pass we probably beat Arkansas and UGA, but it just wasn't to be.
i agree Michael. A good hs men's team could beat that UConn team.
RK- i though those last 4 plays of the Arky game were the worst calls of the year. A good fade pass is hard to throw for a good, experienced quarterback
OK, guys, I get it. It makes me feel better, though, that mrtommyd's wife asked the same thing.
I am at my desk, eating dry roasted peanuts.
I was wondering if there is an official/unofficial gathering planned for A-Day.
Any news?
Of course we had Ark down 20-10, but couldn't hold onto the ball long enough to keep them out of the game...then Chris Todd threw the worst pass in recorded history...well until we saw the video of Caudle from over the weekend.
Sensi, your obnoxious New York Yankees avatar is all I saw from your last post.
and then all you saw was red
RK = not a Caudle fan
Franklin = not a Caudle fan
RK = Franklin????
Bowling -- weight of the ball?
Skeet shooting -- yes.
Iditarod -- if the dogs are of opposite sex, yes. They do the real work.
Seanzie,
This one's for you, right off the request line.
What does the weight of the ball have anything to do with anything.
or the sex of the dog???
Sensi, will have to wait until I am not being watched by big brother to watch the vid. But I will.
Luv,
I've had a vasectomy and a subsequent side effect. Believe me, it has a lot to do with everything.

Sensi,
I don't think it was Franklin who wasn't a Caudle fan, since he never touched the field even after Franklin left.
However...my post was bad. I expect more out of me. Hell, I'd make a response post making fun of me too.
Oh, I think you made a good funny, RK.
I was just exercising the N of my personality.
Actually, I've only seen Caudle in spring games and practices, so I have no idea if I'm a fan of his or not...however that pass that Jay G. posted on here from over the weekend was one of the worst I've ever seen.
Yeah, none of these guys put a ton on the ball, if you ask me.
Makes me appreciate how hard and tight Jason Campbell could fire the pig back in his day. However, he was prone to a few flutter ducks as well.
Jet - vasectomy side effects? The wife is trying to get me to get one, so thanks for scaring me.
HABOTN - also a vasectomy support group.
and early in his college career, he threw the ball at the receivers feet.
Luv,
To be fair, the receivers fell down a lot in those days too. LOL
Michael,
This summer, I'm going to circulate a list:
HABOTN - 1001 uses
Actually the worst pass I've ever seen in an Auburn game was Brandon Cox's final pass at the end of the loss to Miss State in 2007. It was 4th down from around the 15 and he made basically the world's longest spike to about the 3 yard line...well behind his "intended" receiver.
I have always been a Cox supporter, but he sure did throw his fair share of one hoppers over the years.
Can you say Cox supporter on the HABOTN?
Just to be balanced, I had the procedure and have had zero problems.
Aside from only being half a man now, that is.
That reminds me...that skit on Family Guy with the barbershop quartet was hilarious.
ehyou -- umm, they only took one?
Michael ...
Medically speaking, it's always better for the male to be neutered than the wife to be spayed.
Just don't do anything for 3-4 days afterward unless you want a bowling ball as your accomplice.
Vasectomy Song
Any of you guys had hernia surgery?
I will have that procedure in May and I am wondering about recovery.
Tommyd...
Nah, they got both. Just a big ol' sissy now.
I think we need to move this conversation to e-mails or to the WebMD forum. You older folks are scaring the younger and by younger I mean me.
One of my internet rules is to not click on a link that reads "Vasectomy Song"
Jet, glad to hear your complications weren't permanent. The whole thing makes me nervous; everything down there is working pretty well right now, why mess with a good thing?
HABOTN - a cooler version of WebMD
Going somewhere Michael is unwilling to go is quite an accomplishment.
Michael,
In all honesty, I would encourage any husband to do it.
There are less risks to your health as compared to the risks to your wife's health.
Yeah, I wouldn't have my wife do it instead of me, the alternatives I guess would be to never have sex again or have a bunch of children and try to get our own TLC show.
Agree with Jet. Risk-wise it makes sense....if you're done bearing crotch fruit.
I think I speak for the HOTTIES, President Obama and the Justice League when I say I don't think 14 little Michaels running around would necessarily be a positive.
No, but it would make for some darn good television!
Cap'n Boxhead was definitely riveting televsion!

I am proposing a gathering for the A-Day game. I am just the idea man. Y'all work out the details.
Sounds good to me Phred!
That's next Saturday, isn't it?
Thank you, Phred. I posted about that and heard crickets.
Will the A-day game be recorded for live or post-game viewing?
Usually CSS will re-run the A-day games
CSS shows under "schedule" that they are carrying the game live. Super sweet!!
Y'all should get together for ADay.
With the dish I don't get CSS anymore, so I miss out on the spring games, the replays and the Braves baseball they show on there.
I wonder what flavor offense Gus will throw out there? My guess is ice milk, which is even blander than vanilla.
Im headin out to the links
Couple things:
a.) I'll be building a new video momentaily. ETA: 1 p.m. (Upload times at home are to blame)
b.) Why do women over 30 generally thank men for holding doors while women under 30 generally do not?
The spring game will be interesting in terms of the QBs. I think we will get a good idea of who the man will be. Throw more than one pick in that game and you likely ride the pine.
I am also very interested in seeing the receivers. We have a lot of underachieving talent at receiver. Like I said last year, we had the most talented crappy receivers in the nation.
I won't be there for A-Day, but I propose a Summer Gump Gathering of some kind ... and a fall tailgate.
jhag said...
Im headin out to the links
LUCKY!
i could give you a theory on the door holding thing Jay G. but i'm scared of the backlash
Jay G.
The answer to b.) is attitude. There is a very much lack of appreciation among some.
My question is are all women born after 1980 born with a tatoo on their lower back or is it something that Federal Law requires them to get by a certain age?
A fall tailgate is fantastic idea. That will also give the out-of-staters plenty of time to plan for it.
Harrison, my interest in your opinion is steadfast.
I agree with WarEagleRK. The younger generation, it seems, hasn't been taught simple manners.
I thought "vermin" was better than "captain boxhead."
Harrison, be careful...
Sensi.....I had hernia surgery 3.5 years ago. I had the mesh stapled into me for the repair. things were great for 3-4 months, then I started developing abdominal muscle contractions/cramps that caused back problems. Yoga and massage therapy have almost corrected the issue now. There are several class-action lawsuits out regarding various uses of this mesh. I suggest against that and go with the traditional hernia surgery.
The big "V". No problem if you do as Jet says. Do it on a Friday prior to a big sports weekend. Keep the feet up and a bag of ice between your legs and watch sports all weekend. Forget the pain pills....drink whiskey. I carefully went to work on the following Monday.
Why is Jhag going to play golf? Shouldn't he be in Algebra or Social Studies class. High school has changed since I left.
Harrison, shesaid, and I (among others) will be at the corner of Roosevelt and Wire partaking in adult beverages and hating UAT before the ADay (brought to you by the US Navy) if any of you wan tot join us.
How did I miss this 80s smash?
