Tuesday practice chatter

TUESDAY AFTERNOON
Post No. 1,173

Hey everyone. A few players were made available prior to the Tigers' Tuesday evening practice. The theme was quarterbacks. I'm sure you're happy to hear that.

Let's just get to it:
  • It's clear to me that Kodi Burns believes he has accomplished enough to be named the team's top quarterback. Though he remains diplomatic with his answers about the so-called quarterback race, Burns is brimming with confidence these days.

11Being a leader is what I'm doing best," he said Tuesday. ``When I walk out there on the field, the offensive guys look me in the face and know we can get it done."

  • Burns on the plusses of having a clear No. 1 guy during the summer: ``The advantage is the extra work. If you have one guy established, you're going to be that guy. The No. 1s will go with the No. 1s all the time. It would be a lot easier if you have one guy to get your timing and your cohesiveness down."

  • I've never seen a quarterback pooped on more than Neil Caudle in 2008. His offensive coordinator sold him out. Caudle never had a shot. When the team's fortunes soured in October, Auburn coaches considered activating Barrett Trotter, then a true freshman, rather than Caudle. Nevermind that Caudle was in his third college season.

``I know we were a little bit desperate, but it was kind of disheartening for that to happen," Caudle said Tuesday. ``I think it all worked out in the end. This is a new year."

  • The three healthy scholarship quarterbacks (Burns, Caudle, Trotter) split reps evenly during Saturday's scrimmage.

  • Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn says he's grading each quarterback's performance on a daily basis. Those grades apparently are not being shared with the players.

Trotter on his Saturday scrimmage grade: ``Couldn't tell you."

Trotter on if he finds that annoying: ``You'd like to know. At the same time, either way, you know, you're going to keep working hard and doing what you're going to do. Hopefully it wouldn't affect that much of my work ethic. I'm going to work hard either way."

I've been thoroughly enjoying watching the Braves. And yes I have to temper my excitement somewhat like I do for Auburn football. I'm just happy they aren't blowing leads and letting things get out of hand at the end of the game. However there are still 160 to go, so it's a very nice thing to see, but I'm not going to go "Braves to the Series!!" by a long shot.

8:35 AM

Back to football, I really feel like if we get off to a strong start and can get some offensive production, we'll be in the thick of things in the west.

The only "radar" the Braves are flying under is in the media. The teams in their division and league know full well what that team is about and what they are capable of. You don't make the offseason moves they made without garnering attention

8:40 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I had just sent an email to a friend of mine about how much I hate it that TBS decided the Braves were too regional, so they dropped their coverage.

8:46 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I was at Auburn from 1996 - 2000. Awesome times, even if football was not as great as possible. The worst thing about the whole deal is that I played on a high school team that consistantly was a loosing record team and I thought when I got to Auburn, that I was done with that. Apparently I brought my bad luck with me.

8:48 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

it's a cruel world RK. too regional my heiney.

8:48 AM

Well the regional thing over the Braves is garbage, they got dropped because they didn't win and Ted no longer has a vested interest in the team.

Love the pitching acquisitions, and I'm very pleased with the fielding. I was all set to watch us win playing small ball but you know 5 HR every two games is fine with me too. I think the only thing that is a concern is if injuries start up like last year.

9:02 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

Imagine when they get Hudson back!

9:05 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I love the pitchers. They went out and got some guys that throw a bunch of innings, don't get hurt. They've got some great younger players who are all playing well. Last year's team had too many players on geriatrics. I just can't wait for Hudson to come back and join this line up.

9:05 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

ehyou, great minds huh?

9:05 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Let's not get carried away, it's just two games into the season...160 to go. They still have a lineup that I'm not sure can score a ton of runs and they are going to need that pitching and especially the bullpen to prove themselves.

The problem with pitchers who are throwing a lot of innings without getting hurt is there is a lot of wear and tear on that arm and eventually it gives.

9:08 AM
Blogger wtc said...

SPeaking of the Braves, we don't get them in Montgomery anymore. No local radio stations carry them. I did find them on the web last night. I think WGST (ATL radio station) is carrying all the games. I will try to find the link and post it for you.

9:08 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Yeah Derek Lowe is a friggin machine. Jurrjens did great last night. I'm interested to see how Vazquez and Kawakami do. I also heard that Glavine is progressing quite well. And I again I have to remind myself there are still 160 games, but the overall feeling is a good one. Hopefully they don't decide to play down o the level of their competition when the Nationals come to town

The Line-Up isn't Stellar at the 1-2 spots, but 3-6 is about as good as you'll find in the NL and the 7 and 8 guys aren't bad. Fran is the wildcard. If he can hit with his revamped stance and sustain close to .300, this team will score plenty of runs.

9:12 AM

I think the Braves will be a decent team, but they are in the same division with the Mets and the defending champion Phillies.

9:14 AM

Much rather watch "Family Guy" reruns on TBS than Braves.

Though I did tune into Peachtree and caught Chipper's ding dong -- er, home run.

9:15 AM

This season for the Braves will come down to if the bullpen can hold a lead, if Chipper stays healthy and if Franceour can come back from a bad year.

Phillies won't replicate, their line-up is vastly overrated Cole Hamels isn't right. Mets...well the Mets are chokers and are annual underacheivers.

9:22 AM

Commit less penalties...it seemed like last year every time we'd get at least in FG range, we'd get a false start or a holding call on the next play.

10:03 AM

I think Ensminger's idea of offense was Off Center, Off Guard, Off Tackle, Zone Read, and on pass plays, everyone go out.

10:03 AM
Blogger michael said...

On women vs men in bball: when I was in 8th grade, our boys basketball team scrimmaged the varsity girls team. So we weren't even all the way through puberty, and we beat them pretty easily.

Also, when I was at Auburn, the women's team scrimmaged a group of guys (called Orange Crush maybe?) regularly who were just average Joes going to Auburn, and according to my friend who played, the dudes always won.

So yeah, if UNC tried hard on defense, I am thinking something like 120-15 final score.

10:04 AM

Seanzie, I hope our coaches can get our boys to not jump before the snap in a game this year. Wouldn't that be cool?!?!

And I said in a game with any of the top 25 mens there's a good chance the ladies would lose, just because of the physical differences of the game between the two. It was the opener vs LaMonroe where we only had 3 offensive TD's and no consistent drives that gave us a clue that this year could be a long one.

Chris Todd looked really good early on vs Southern Miss, that gave me hope.

Franklin = not a Caudle fan

RK = Franklin????

Bowling -- weight of the ball?

Skeet shooting -- yes.

Iditarod -- if the dogs are of opposite sex, yes. They do the real work.

What does the weight of the ball have anything to do with anything.

I've had a vasectomy and a subsequent side effect. Believe me, it has a lot to do with everything.

Sensi,

I don't think it was Franklin who wasn't a Caudle fan, since he never touched the field even after Franklin left.

However...my post was bad. I expect more out of me. Hell, I'd make a response post making fun of me too.

11:02 AM

Oh, I think you made a good funny, RK.

I was just exercising the N of my personality.

Actually, I've only seen Caudle in spring games and practices, so I have no idea if I'm a fan of his or not...however that pass that Jay G. posted on here from over the weekend was one of the worst I've ever seen.

Yeah, none of these guys put a ton on the ball, if you ask me.

Makes me appreciate how hard and tight Jason Campbell could fire the pig back in his day. However, he was prone to a few flutter ducks as well.

Jet - vasectomy side effects? The wife is trying to get me to get one, so thanks for scaring me.

HABOTN - also a vasectomy support group.

To be fair, the receivers fell down a lot in those days too. LOL

Actually the worst pass I've ever seen in an Auburn game was Brandon Cox's final pass at the end of the loss to Miss State in 2007. It was 4th down from around the 15 and he made basically the world's longest spike to about the 3 yard line...well behind his "intended" receiver.

11:09 AM
Blogger michael said...

I have always been a Cox supporter, but he sure did throw his fair share of one hoppers over the years.

Can you say Cox supporter on the HABOTN?

Blogger ehyou said...

Just to be balanced, I had the procedure and have had zero problems.

Aside from only being half a man now, that is.

That reminds me...that skit on Family Guy with the barbershop quartet was hilarious.

Michael ...

Medically speaking, it's always better for the male to be neutered than the wife to be spayed.

Just don't do anything for 3-4 days afterward unless you want a bowling ball as your accomplice.

Jet, glad to hear your complications weren't permanent. The whole thing makes me nervous; everything down there is working pretty well right now, why mess with a good thing?

Michael,

In all honesty, I would encourage any husband to do it.

There are less risks to your health as compared to the risks to your wife's health.

11:29 AM
Blogger michael said...

Yeah, I wouldn't have my wife do it instead of me, the alternatives I guess would be to never have sex again or have a bunch of children and try to get our own TLC show.

Agree with Jet. Risk-wise it makes sense....if you're done bearing crotch fruit.

Couple things:

a.) I'll be building a new video momentaily. ETA: 1 p.m. (Upload times at home are to blame)

b.) Why do women over 30 generally thank men for holding doors while women under 30 generally do not?

12:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The spring game will be interesting in terms of the QBs. I think we will get a good idea of who the man will be. Throw more than one pick in that game and you likely ride the pine.

I am also very interested in seeing the receivers. We have a lot of underachieving talent at receiver. Like I said last year, we had the most talented crappy receivers in the nation.

The answer to b.) is attitude. There is a very much lack of appreciation among some.

My question is are all women born after 1980 born with a tatoo on their lower back or is it something that Federal Law requires them to get by a certain age?

12:14 PM

A fall tailgate is fantastic idea. That will also give the out-of-staters plenty of time to plan for it.

Sensi.....I had hernia surgery 3.5 years ago. I had the mesh stapled into me for the repair. things were great for 3-4 months, then I started developing abdominal muscle contractions/cramps that caused back problems. Yoga and massage therapy have almost corrected the issue now. There are several class-action lawsuits out regarding various uses of this mesh. I suggest against that and go with the traditional hernia surgery.

The big "V". No problem if you do as Jet says. Do it on a Friday prior to a big sports weekend. Keep the feet up and a bag of ice between your legs and watch sports all weekend. Forget the pain pills....drink whiskey. I carefully went to work on the following Monday.

Why is Jhag going to play golf? Shouldn't he be in Algebra or Social Studies class. High school has changed since I left.

Harrison, shesaid, and I (among others) will be at the corner of Roosevelt and Wire partaking in adult beverages and hating UAT before the ADay (brought to you by the US Navy) if any of you wan tot join us.
