Auburn still messing with Texas

Hey everyone. Recruiting ace Jeffrey Lee, of AuburnSports.com, reports this morning that behemoth Texas tackle Aleon Calhoun (6-foot-7, 315 pounds) has received an Auburn offer.

Not too shabby ... considering he hasn't visited or corresponded with anyone from Auburn.

"I was really shocked," Calhoun told AuburnSports.com. ``I was like 'Wow. This is for me and I haven't even talked to them or anything.' It felt good."

IN OTHER RECRUITING NEWS OF NOTE:
  • Another Texas OT, Daryl Williams, has received an offer from Auburn. Unlike Calhoun, who remains popular mostly in his home state, Williams has drawn offers from a wider array of schools. Even Alabama is on him.

  • CB Demarcus Milliner of Stanhope Elmore High visited coach Gene Chizik on campus last week. Chizik told Milliner, the nation's top-rated cornerback according to Rivals.com, that he can start immediately at Auburn in 2010. We know this because AuburnSports.com tells us so.

Scott Chocolate,
I had forgotten all about the Alamo. That place got Huge quick, then kind of fizzled.
Harry's was the place to be by the time my days were coming to a close. Halloween night 1987 was CRAZY in that joint.
It amazes me that there are kids at Auburn who have never been to the Supper Club.

Almost any OL signee with some talent will get immediate playtime, if not on offense, at least on special teams.

That's pretty much a given. I don't think there's coachspeak involved in that.

4:18 PM

Was Harry's the place on College that had the $2.00 32 oz Long Island Iced Teas? If not, what was that place, and can I go there now?

4:19 PM

I got to AU and it was the Blocked Punt and Casino. When I left 5 years later, it was Darvo's, Hungry Hunter and the original 2 story bar at Toomer's. Supper Club has impressive longevity.

According to Rivals....the coach speak was to the DB.

Harry's was out on the A-O parkway, near the Dean Road intersection.

I think The Alamo got busted one too many times for admitting under-aged people. Not completely related to that, but at least once when I was there, they ran out of beer and sent a patron out with some money to buy them some more at a grocery or convenience store.

4:24 PM
Blogger Aubie said...

I doubt that Harry's ever made anyone a Long Island Iced Tea. If you wanted a beer, you were in luck.
It was a hole in the wall joint with pool tables and a juke box that had "He stopped loving her today" on continual loop.

The disclaimers and qualifications at the end of the Colonial Bank retirement announcement read like the same for an investment prospectus.

So which one was on College, on the left, headed north from Denaro's? It was hot around '86-'87. I think it was open under a couple of names, then closed before I left AU in '89.

4:46 PM
Blogger Aubie said...

Headed toward 280 in the Super 8 was Waldo Pepper's when I was a freshman. Can't remember the next name.
There was a bar in the hotel on the left headed out toward I-85 near the old KA house.
Can't remember that one either.
Damn beer kills brain cells. You'd think they would've recovered by now.

4:59 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Aubie - you're clearly not recalling "The Buffalo Theory". Towit:

"...it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive drinking of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

5:14 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

It's driving me crazy trying to think of the name of that bar. As Homer would say, "Ah, alcohol - the cause of and solution to all the world's problems". I know I got this place confused with Harry's for some reason. I'm pretty sure I went there a few times, too (or as Jet said, "ended up there"). I believe there was a "Harvey's" at one point on College. Maybe that's what replaced Waldo Pepper's.

6:01 PM
Blogger Aubie said...

Love the buffalo theory!
So what you're saying is...
“Every morning in Alabama, a brain cell wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest beer or it will be killed. Every morning in Alabama , a beer wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest brain cell, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a brain cell or a beer - when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

He said Justin Albert will most likely be returning punts and kickoffs next year.

He is very high on Terrell Zachary. CTT said he did everything he could to make him give up and quit, and Zachary came through it all like a champ.

He did say that none of Auburn's current QB's or WR's would be good enough to have started at OSU last year. He said they will get there, but they weren't there yet. He was pretty blunt about where we are offensively.

I am also the proud recipient of a CTT chest bump.

A couple of things. I think the bad start in the first game last season could be attributed to the QB shuffle. It wasn't a game we were going to lose.

After reading the Todd article on Auburn Undercover, I predict he will be the starter and Burns will be the backup.
