Lowder out at Colonial

Hey everyone. Thought I'd give a cursory mention about Bobby Lowder retiring from his position at Colonial BancGroup.

You old timers will remember the days when it seemed like 90% of the Auburn faithful hated the guy. I never understood that. I heard all these stories about how dangerous he was and, honestly, I'd assess him as a very bright nerd.

I've only spoken with him a few times, though, so maybe he tricked me.

Sure, he meddled in some stuff. So what? The university (and the athletic department) needed some direction and he provided it. Auburn seems like a pretty healthy institution to me.

Scott,

I didn't see them there. Wish I had known they were coming. There was a former Auburn DB there that almost got knocked on his a$$ by the Trooper bump.

Yes, we were competitive in 2007. Competitive we weren't in 2008. Pathetic was closer to the truth. The reason why and whether the head coach would correct it is what we were discussing.

By the way, Marshall seems to be thinking we go 8-4 this season, 9-3 at best. Those numbers seem a bit overly optimistic to me. A winning season seems like the appropriate measure of success considering the circumstances. I would consider 8 wins a huge success.

And who exactly took Cox out, Steve?

11:50 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well we have three games we should win without a doubt, there are other teams which are in a similar situation and I would say there are 4 of those...and the rest we will be underdogs in but those teams also aren't without question marks. It depends on your prespective and how many you think we can steal against like competition.

Chris Slaughter was long gone before Tubs left. Chris Slaughter was berated by xCTT after his stellar performance in Ole Miss game. That was the end of it.

The statement that coaching change resulted in talent leaving .. is absolutely incorrect with zero backing.

12:41 PM

"It would be the MSU game we basically lost because they took out Cox and played Kodi."

What?

Cox started the game 0-3 with two interceptions.

MSU was up 13-0 when Cox was pulled and Kodi came in and suddenly it was 14-13.

We lost the game because on a 3rd and 14 that would have held Miss State to a FG when the game was still 14-13 late in the game, they ran Dixon right by Quintin Groves for 16 yards who admited he didn't even know what play was called because he was too busy trying to get the Auburn sack record to play the right D.

Cox came back in late in the game and moved us down field, but threw the final pass of the game into the dirt 5 yards in front of any receiver.

12:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, Cox had two interceptions early in that game, one of which was his fault. If he had played the entire game, we would have won. Kodi was good in spurts, but once the MSU defense adjusted to him, we were done.

12:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks Sensi. I really try to avoid following Alabama. I just find life more peaceful that way, but I saw the reference in a more general article.

12:53 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Auburn lived and died by the home run this year, the hitting coach never taught patience and made the players learn the significance of working the count deep to tire out the starting pitching for the other team.

That is a huge thing in college baseball if you can tire someone's ace out early.

12:54 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I still put a lot of heat on Groves for that game. A clutch situation where we needed a stop and he had no clue what defense was called because he was selfishly going for an individual record.

Had we gotten a stop there, even if they hit the FG, Cox does enough to get us down at the other end to kick the game winner.

12:55 PM

The news today is the FSJ is really that shark dude/dudette that shows up every once in a while. He does that so he can vent on us and then go back to the nice UA guy that we like. And he laughs all day at us about it.

With all those linebackers, I think the news could be that UAT runs a 1-9-1 defense next year.

1:00 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

You could run the 1-9-1 if your 1 in the secondary was Eric Berry.

1:03 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do agree Groves made a stupid move there and I think I read where he admitted it.

That was the first game that really showed the Kodi wasn't as billed. Once the MSU defense wasn't concerned with his passing, we were done. If I remember correctly, he did hit one very long pass, over 50 yards, in the first half, but he wasn't an SEC caliber QB and still is not. Cox was. Although Cox had a few games in his career where he was terrible, a lot of it had to do with the lack of playmakers on offense, chiefly the receivers. It is also what gave Jason Campbell so much problems in 2003. Although he all star runningbacks, our receivers had a bad habit of dropping the ball. Actually I had a discussion before a game in the al.com forum with someone that hated Campbell that year. I told him to watch the game closely and notice how many passes are dropped. His opinion changed.

In Cox's case, he tended to force things to make things happen when it was apparent the running game was going nowhere.

Don't forget that with Cox as the QB, we had the number 1 offense in the SEC in 2005. Yes, some of the blame for the losses in 2007 goes to Cox, but he was far from the primary issue. He was very under appreciated. He is actually one of the best clutch players we have had at QB and lead many late drives for wins. He just also had a couple of games (Georgia) where he had a horrible time.

1:03 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I heart Brandon Cox.

1:04 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Kenny Irons, Ben Obomanu, Devin Aromashodu and Courtney Taylor also had a lot to do with that # 1 scoring offense in 2005.

All in all Cox was an average SEC QB who could be good depending on the playmakers around him. On his best day he was a good SEC QB. Not great, but good.

Cox was an average SEC QB, who you just asked not to make mistakes.

By the way RK, I am also a Randy Campbell fan, and he couldn't pass nearly as well as Cox. He just was very good at not doing something stupid and handing the ball off to some dude named Bo.

1:22 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

If the offense goes out and plays not to lose, Auburn can forget getting big-time offensive players. I don't think Malzahn would have came to Auburn if that was going to be the approach. The offense has to show signs of life to show the recruits that are needed here that they will be given the chance to show their talents. The way the recent offenses have looked at Auburn, I don't blame offensive players for not coming here.

1:23 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Randy Campbell was a really good option QB. He was a great fit for the offense we ran at that time.

Unlike Pat Washington who was recruited for the option, but was ill equipt to run what our offense had morphed into in 84 and 85.

1:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

depressed, you always play to win. Actually, the second half of last season we played to not lose. The problem was, our defense got pretty darn banged up.

The biggest thing with a QB is that they cannot win the game for you, but they sure can lose it. One of the criticism I had of Cox was that at times he didn't know when to just throw the ball away.

1:26 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Pat Washington turned into a big disappointment. There was one season we went into the Tennessee game with a 3 QB competition and he was one of them. I think the others were Charlie Trotman and Charlie Thomas. It was one of the ugliest games of the Pat Dye era.

1:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

My biggest hope for this next season is that when our offense gets the ball, I consider it a good thing.

1:29 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Depressed,

I guess to me that's what is the stupid thing about Tuberville. He knew we needed to change. Why else would he hire Franklin?

There can be no halfway commitment to a vision.

1:29 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Charlie Trotman was from the late 70's...maybe you were thinking Jeff Burger?

1:30 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Steve ...

The other QBs were Bobby Walden and Jeff Burger. Washington ended up being the QB the rest of the way.

1:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That is very possible. My memory gets bad at times.

Every time our offense took the field last season, the dying words of a redneck came to mind: "Watch this"!!!

I do hope my impression changes this season. I like what I am hearing from Malzahn although a lot of it sounds similar to the Franklin Experience, the big differences I hear are vertical passing game and power running. I haven't heard Malzahn say we would set up the run with the pass.

When discussing Brandon Cox's merit as an SEC QB, one must distinguish between B.Cox I (pre-LSU 2006) and B.Cox II (post-LSU 2006). I think injuries, and primarily the injuries suffered during that game, had much to do with turning an above average QB into a mediocre or sub-average QB.

1985 showed that you can have the best RB in the world, but if you have a QB who doesn't scare the D at all, then it won't work.

We went to the pro-style offense a year too late. Had we done that in 85 and had Burger as the starter we might have been able to justify our # 1 ranking that year.

Jet, you are dead-on with the halfway vision statement. Auburn lost its identity on offense and the team followed suit. The players played with a total lack of confidence. Chizik seems determined to bring back a hard-nosed identity to the team. I don't know how many wins that will equal, but I look forward to seeing some signs of life in the program.
