Tuesday chatter

Hey everyone. I'm now on my way to Cincinnati for a little solo time with Wifey. We're planning a day at Kings Island and a movie/Reds day as well.

I like these few days a year.

Thanks for staying with the HABOTN even thought it's most high-profile bloggist is chillin' three states away.

Today's topic: Will Hot Carter become a star or will he level off as a merely useful player?

I have an opinion on this. I'll share later.

I'm not gonna go into extreme details, I'll just say that even though A. Carter is a very nice guy who needs to focus more on football. We don't need a JJ on our team. End of story.

Guess what?! It's Wednesday in my neighborhood. That means it's time to wish all the HOTTIES...

Happy Eddie Blake Day!

T-minus 66 days til kickoff!!!

Eddie was one of the earliest of the “HUGE” offensive linemen, playing for Pat Dye in the the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. He was 1st team All-SEC as a senior in 1991. He was drafted by the Dolphins in the 2nd round of the 1992 draft. Coach Don Shula drafted him to play on the other side of the ball, at nose tackle. After 2 years on the roster, apparently with no game experiece, he was listed on the 1994 Dolphins roster as an offensive guard. However, I find no evidence that he survived the cut that year, or in fact ever played in a regular season NFL game.

From a contemporary newspaper summary of the Dolphins draft picks in 1992:
“The biggest gamble: Blake, a 321-pound lineman who failed a drug test in February. He was regarded as one of the better guards in the draft, but Shula will use him at nose tackle. He played on Auburn`s goal-line defense and told Shula he`d be open to the switch.”

But Eddie only made #7 on the worst ever rankings of Dolphins draft picks, as voted on by readers at The Phinsider

Well, they can’t all be super star All-Americans. No one offered up an alternative 66, so HAPPY EDDIE BLAKE DAY!!!

WARRRRRRR EAGLE!!!

GO TIGERS!!!

Morning hotties!

These moves are killing me. Last night we moved my niece out of her apartment - 4 rooms of furniture down 3 flights of stairs (90 stairs in one round trip - not that I was counting). She is staying with us for the next month until her new apartment is ready.

She is here in addition to my son in law who is interning at a law firm here in Bham for the summer, and my brother in law who has taken a job in Bham and is with us for a few weeks until they get their house ready. Next week my daughter will also be here. Fun times at the Chandler B&B!

how on earth did I leave out Frank Warren? I remember thinking of him when I made the list, but I just flat out forgot to pencil him in.

I hereby declare Eddie Blake Day concluded.

HAPPY FRANK WARREN DAY!!!

8:29 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

for my age i know a good bit about AU football history, but i must admit i didn't know much about Frank Warren. i knew he played at AU but that's it.

According to Wikipedia he was a 3rd round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints, played 13 years with them, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He died at the age of 43 after suffering a heart attack in 2002.

8:34 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

or we could go with Mario Lemieux ;-)

8:34 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

I hope Eddie Blake made the most of his (half) day. Good call, TarHeel, Warren has to get the call over Blake.

8:38 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

If I recall, Frank Warren and Donnie Humphrey were the defensive anchors on Pat Dye's first Auburn team.

8:39 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

all kudos go to our spiritual leader, Brother Jet

8:40 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Of course, ol' Jet was 66 in HS. Does that count for anything?

Does it help that because of my ineptitude (and that of 10 of my teammates) future Auburn star Tommie Agee scored a TD on the opening kickoff of his senior year? And that he had 193 yards and three touchdowns rushing on nine carries?

I didn't think so.

8:42 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I didn't even realize Frank Warren passed away. That is way too young. That is younger than me.

8:43 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

And Jeff Lott probably contributed more to the program than Eddie Blake did, with hardly any recognition. Good work by Jet.

8:45 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

don't worry, Jet. Top 10 Maryland's defense did even worse.

8:46 AM
Blogger Jet said...

THT ...

Frank played 77-80.

Edmund Nelson and Donnie Humphrey were Dye's first two DTs. Doug Smith took Nelson's spot in year two. Humphrey got hurt against So. Miss. in 1982 in the second game of the year. Dowe Aughtman, I believe, stepped up at NG.

8:48 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

THT, memories from that game are of Agee running wild, and the precision passing of Norman Esiason for Maryland. What a thrilling game.

8:49 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

FYI, i just got an email from Tiger Rags. everything is 25% off on www.tigerrags.com until July 6th.

8:49 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Bro Jet - thanks for that clarification. I loved Warren, Nelson, Humphrey, Aughtman, & Smith. BTW, when did Quency Williams play? And wasn Aughtman's jersey number in the low 60s?

8:54 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

So that means prices are almost at a decent level.

8:55 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wasn't the Maryland game the game where the fullback had 200 yards and both tailbacks were over 100 yards. We had a game like that and I believe it was Maryland. The numbers were just incredible.

8:56 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Agee had 219,
Little Train 115
Bo 105

9:00 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

Steve, that was the game you are thinking about. Agee was brillant, and Norman "Boomer" Esiason was like a machine against an outstanding AU defense. One of the better AU games that is hardly ever mentioned, it seems.

9:00 AM
Blogger Jet said...

THT ...

Dowe Aughtman ... 61?

Vernon Blackard, a rare Texas signee, also played in 1982 after the injury to Humphrey.

Steve ... Agee was the FB with 200 yards. He was one of four RBs we signed for the fall of 1982 -- Bo, Alan Evans, Tim Jessie and Tommie. Tim and Tommie were redshirted.

Alan flopped, went to UTC for a while, then ended up working at Uniroyal in Opelika. Bo turned out OK.

9:01 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

That was one of the most incredible offensive performances by an Auburn team I ever listened to. It was back in the day I huddled next to my radio.

9:03 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Alan Evans is historic because he was rated as the top in state runningback coming out of highschool. He was ranked ahead of that Bo guy.

9:05 AM
Blogger Jet said...

And I forgot Ben Thomas as a DL!

9:06 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Jet, I hereby declare you the King of Auburn Knowledge

9:06 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

oh yes! I also loved me some 91.

Quency was indeed from that error, I think #93

9:06 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

One of the neat stories about Bo was that the considered playing him at fullback, but Randy Campbell had a problem. He kept asking if Bo was lining up too close because he couldn't get turned around quick enough to hand the ball off before Bo got there.

9:06 AM
Blogger Jet said...

That was my senior year of high school. Alan Evans was the No. 1 prospect ... Curt Jarvis was No. 2 and David "Hoss" Johnson was No. 3. I think Jeff Parks, AU TE, was No. 4. And Vincent Jackson was No. 5

9:08 AM
Blogger Jet said...

THT ...

No ... I am looking stuff up to confirm or refute hazy memories.

i did a practicum at the Uniroyal fitness center for a quarter during my AU days.

if i remember correctly there is a great pic of Q.Williams taking down Boomer Esiason in the Decade of the 80's book that came out a few years ago.

9:11 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

did you happen to run into Alan Evans?

9:11 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

we need that game on dvd. I was there, but I'd sure like to see it again.

9:12 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

Jet, Alan has a son playing on the Auburn(city school) football team, I think he is in jr high now. Alan is still a big Auburn University fan.

Color me impressed that you guys can remember all of that in such detail. Heck, I wasn't even born until the fall of 1980. (Auburn defeated Duke 35-28 the day I was born.)

I believe in the AU-Duke program I was the lucky fan to submit the "Where are they now?" question for a feature story. I wanted to know where was David Langner.

9:22 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Are we not going to have a Sam Dejarnette day?

9:25 AM
Blogger Jet said...

That's day 29, Steve!

I think Sam holds the distinction of scoring for Auburn and against Auburn in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

9:26 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

New thread up. Sorry for the delay.

9:27 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Pratt was 36

I liked George Peoples.

Wad Ed Graham the fella who scored the kickoff TD vs FSU in tandem with Fullwood?

9:28 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

Jet, you forgot Darrell 'Lectron' Williams, #45. he even scored a TD in the '89 Bama game.

9:28 AM
Blogger Miller said...

Jet,
Langner attends every AU home game and tailgates with a group of former Tigers from the '72 team.
