Coaching spotlight: Phillip Lolley
PHILLIP LOLLEY
Age: 55 (born 5/19/54)
College: B.A. from Livingston aka West Alabama (psychology), 1977; M.A. from Livingston (psychology), 1981.
Playing career: He was a successful pitcher in college. He threw a no-hitter as a freshman in 1974.
Coaching career:
•Auburn, various roles (current)
•North Jackson High, head coach (1988-98)
•Stevenson High, head coach (1984-87)
•Demopolis High, defensive coordinator (1982-83)
•Warrior Academy, head coach (1978-81)
•Choctaw Academy, secondary (1977)
Mentor:
I've never asked him about this. I will.
Previous Auburn experience:
He's been here a while now. He has been a high-school liaison, an NFL liaison and a secondary coach.
Coaching philosophy:
Lolley definitely is a old-school guy. He's the oldest coach on staff and, one could argue, has made the longest trek to get here. He spent the first 21 years of his career coaching high-school ball.
Here's where it gets interesting. During his days at North Jackson High, Lolley was known as one of the most calculating and aggressive coaches in the state. He was paranoid. He went to great lengths searching for ways to annoy opponents. I've never had this corroborated, but Lolley told me he once tried to paint the NJHS visitors' lockers pink. The principal wouldn't allow it.
He was an in-your-face guy back then. In his mind, football wasn't a game for creativity. It's a place where brawn and intensity earn the real rewards. He ran simple sweeps and belly plays. He dared opponents to man up.
He won the 1993 4A state championship using that kind of approach.
Since his arrival at Auburn, though, I think Lolley has evolved in many respects. He's still extremely country and sounds like a drill instructor when he speaks. Lolley doesn't have an "inside" voice. Taping his interviews doesn't require much positioning, you might say.
Still, I don't hear him cuss. I've seen him yell at players many times, but he does it in an instructive way. I don't see him berate people for the joy of crushing a kid's psyche. If reports are true, Lolley had no problem getting negative during his high-school days.
As a secondary coach, Lolley is into intricacies. You know how Jeff Grimes and Curtis Luper examine the big picture with their players? Lolley talks about turning hips too early, placing hands in the correct place, learning to "look off" quarterbacks by looking one way and watching another. He's all about details and repetitions. Like I said: Lolley is old school.
Personality profile:
For all that energy, you know, Lolley still is a pro's pro. I don't hear him cuss. He probably praises his players too much. Any criticisms he has, Lolley preserves them for closed-door sessions with the players themselves.
He lives by what I'd call an armed-forces code. He gets to work early and works through his list of tasks. When those tasks are completed, he works ahead. That's a big reason why Gene Chizik likes Lolley so much. Lolley's hard-edged approach provides an ideal complement to many of the new-school guys Chizik has assembled.
Lolley is respected by high-school coaches throughout the state, which makes him a valuable commodity to the Tigers' recruiting enterprise. There's nothing artificial about Lolley. He worked his way up through the ranks. He's not pious. The conversation he'd hold (and the tone he'd use) would be the same whether it's Jay Gogue or an AISA assistant coach asking for suggestions.
His loyalty also is worth noting. He's not in coaching for the money or the fame. If Lolley finds a place he likes, he stays. He spent 10 seasons at North Jackson. He's now heading into his 11th season with the Tigers.
When Tommy Tubervillewas fired resigned in December and his assistants jettisoned, it was Lolley who stuck around and tried to control damage from a recruiting standpoint. Those weren't easy days for him. I suspect he put in some 80-hour weeks just trying to keep guys like Philip Lutzenkirchen and Andre Harris on board.

SUBSTANCE
Jay, an interesting read on a guy who hasn't been talked about much and when I have heard him talked about, it hasn't been good. It sounds as if he brings a different element to the defensive side of the ball and his connections to the high schools instate could be invaluable.
Ol' school is good especiallly on defense. At the end of the day, you gotta to hit someone in the mouth. I dont know if they've created many new techniques for doing that.
Slow day, where did everyone go?
These analyses are invaluable. The most we got prior to these was the blurb "former ____ coach at ____". Even researching their coaching history wouldn't give you their philosophy and personality. Awesome stuff for folks that really care about the program.
I like what I read. Lolley pop.. to sweeten our relationship with high school coaches.
---
Jay.. any chance of getting a list of guys from last recruiting class that made it to Auburn?
Guys from the last recruiting class that made it to Auburn.
You mean the February signees?
Very interesting, especially since he was a psychology major. This guy seems a bit paradoxical since your description of him seems far different than that of any psychologist I have ever known.
Fantastic work Jay. Thanks abunch man..
Interesting read...
I'm interested to see how the secondary plays and how Thigpen and Lolley co-exist coaching the outfielders.
Great insight into Lolley. After reading these coaching profiles, I have a new respect for the job Chizik did in putting this staff together. There seems to be a nice mix of old-school, new-school coaches, and everyone looks to have an active role in recruiting. It will be very interesting to see how they all work together(or not) on gameday.

nice work jgt. that is 99.9% more than i knew about him during his first 10 years at AU.
Yessir.. the Feb signees.
I know Rollison hasn't made it yet. But I've heard that 14 odd guys have made it to the campus so far.
Jet-- by the time it's all said n done, you'd have written something comparable to Shakespeare's work.
No, I'm not the Bard, Aeronaut. The Lard, maybe.
I can also confirm that Coach Lolley as also shared the Pink Vistor's lockerroom story with me. That would have been hilarious if it would have been approved by the principal. Coach Lolley has some really good stories that can almost border on tall tales they are so good.
What year did CPL take the off the field role? Seems like it was the year CGC left AU for UT. Our secondary play has gone down each year.
Cory- That is because Chizik left, not Lolley. I feel pretty confident with that statement.
Eddie just to expand on your thoughts a bit, 2004 was the high water mark for Auburn during Tuberville's tenure. He also had the best staff surrounding him/best talent. Once all those pieces left, we regressed and Tommy couldn't find the same winning formula afterwards.
It will be interesting to see how the Chizik regime handles change and adversity.
Coach Lolley story:
Being down here in Mobile, I try to go to a good bit of the Senior Bowl functions. It is neat during the week at night because near the hotel downtown you can go into any restaurant or bar and see a list of who's who. Well unless you are a sport nut, like myself, most fans and Auburn fans could not pick Coach Lolley out of a lineup.
But for two years straight me and buddy of mine would run into Coach Lolley in a dive bar called "veets" across from the main hotel. He would tend to himself, we walked up and introduced ourselves and he was very nice. We had a beer with him and he told 100 stories with ease. A very nice stern man, he reminds me of the movie actor that always plays military guys, the host of the show "mail call" or sgt in hamburger hill,
I think he is a good guy. This is a young staff, maybe we need a little age to balance things out.
Sean, we had regressed some, but we were favored to win the west Tuberville's final season. I think he knew where he wanted to go with the offense. It is just that some were not patient, and it cost us.
Hopefully we will be more patient with Chizik. I like what he has done so far. I will be very satisfied if we look prepared for every game, which we didn't last season.
People will point to our QBs as the problem last season, but it wasn't. It was execution on offense with the most glaring problem being the offensive line. This was likely due to the linemen getting conflicting messages from Franklin and Nall. Hopefully the new offensive staff will be on the same page.
Our last two recruiting classes have hurt, mainly this last class. The issues with the classes are primarily that they didn't fit needs. Hopefully this year will be a different story. This recruiting class is looking very similar to what we have seen in the past. If some of the big names come through, it could be the best class since 2007.
I am looking forward to seeing how this team does. As I have said, I think our worst years will be around 2011 and 2012, but a good record this season and some good recruiting classes should help to minimize that.
Wow. Thanks, Jay. I didn't know any of that about Lolley (except that he has been at Auburn for a while). I learned a lot.
You are up to your usual — quite high — standard of work.
JayGT - that is a wonderful article. Thanks so much!!!
I'm just out of prison and now to a meeting. HABOTN withdrawal starting to set in.
Thanks for your support!
Apparently, the puppets died of heat stroke.
If we were only so lucky, Jet.
The highest rated Auburn commit on scout site is the kicker. He just got 4*s
Steve....the 2006 and 2007recruiting classes were good on paper. Not quite the mix that we needed. The inordinate ATTRITION from those classes is what has emptied the coffers.
Blame for the attrition can be spread a lot of ways, would cause headaches to delve into and wouldn't solve a thing.
C'mon Hoopie ...
Speculate!
Jet is pushing for a Hoopie-Steve confrontation. Instigator.
Unless it's PDWT, I don't read posts over two paragraphs ... just sayin'.
PDWT, the actor is R. Lee Ermey.
Phred,
That certainly makes life simpler.
Rumor during the coaching change was Lolley knew about jetgate and was in favor of bringing in Petrino. When Tubbs found out, he was taken off the field. There were several coaches in the know and they were moved out within the year or just after the 2004 season.
This is what I heard from a few individuals at AU.
Please do not get into tit for tat about Tubbs and his recruiting classes and how poor or great they were or were not.
Hush, WTC!
We've haven't had a thorough vetting of the Tuberville years this week.
C'mon Steve! Hoopie! Depressed! Sean! Chip!
Bring it on!
I'm [ast the Tubbs argument. No matter what the others say, he was in a tailspin and he took the team with him. It's over and we have turned the page, but if anyone wants to review the matter, I will nominate Jet or Monica to rebuff (can I use that word) them.
Preach it, Brother WTC!
So what you kids hearing on the 'cruitin' front?
I think chip chip thinks Mincy, Howard and Mack commit very soon. I hear Dyer is ready and so is the Owens kid. Bmatthews thinks Seastrunk and Reed both come to AU.
That is a top ist there, but Ihave heard several OL have recently began showing up on the radar. They are even looking for the #1 player in the nation, big Ol from Minn, to visit on the next Big cat. Also I think Trooper has said there will be a big bang coming up around the holidays but would not saywhat it was. Says we would have to wait.
(But I don't follow recruiting)
My guess is Howard, Mincy and Owens make the big reveal soon.
You mean, Seantrel Henderson, of St. Paul, Minnesota, might be coming to the next Big Cat Weekend.
Wow.
The PTB caused the attrition....yeahhhh that's it. It's a complicated theory that would take more than 2 paragraphs to explain and I value Phred's readership.
Sorry Jet....That's all I got left in me.
I heard they were looking for him to come. May not happen but they have spoken to him about it. Seastrunk made some calls He has contacted Scout and gotten some phone numbers, from what I read.
We need OL.
I hate Bama.
wtc...that's a knowledgeble "not following".
Hoopie ...
Championships aren't won by cutting corners, holding back to one paragraph!
Just letting you know what I have heard from others or read from a cruitin' website that a relative has a scription to and we looked over it this weekend.
I think jhag had all the recruitin info. I know Monica is a great source of info.
wtc, I always have heard that Joe Whitt was also in the know on Jetgate, thus his "promotion" to fund-raising.
Jet, I try to stop, but you keep dragging me back in.
Can we agree to remove Mike Patrick from the broadcast booth -- permanently?
Steve, to respond to you earlier, we had regressed some, people thought we were going to come back and we belly flopped. Regression complete.
I think these two classes have been fine, offensive linemen notwithstanding. I feel like this new group is better equipped to engage Saban on the recruiting front, now between the lines, that remains to be seen.
Scout has Cody Parkey (K) rated as a 4* now. I'm excited to see this guy sticking with AU.
I hope this means we can have the expectation of making field goals consistently inside of 42 yards.
I didn't think kickers could get 4 stars?
Miller, that means he's uber kicker.
depressed, Whit was one of them and when Tubbs found out Chizik was in the know and in favor, he was asked to leave. (Just what i heard a while back)
FYI-I saw you guys discuss it last week. But the wife says Jon & kate filed for divorce today.
now back to football. I do not know why folks watch that show.
Living room = Mrs. Jet watching Jon minus Kate plus 8
Man cave = Jet watching Tejas vs. Corn Dogs in what appears to be post-season baseball -- something I'm not familiar with.
I wish these jon and kate peeps would fade away into oblivion... there is only so much i can take of people pimping thier kids in an effort to promote themselves...
Miller, they get around $25k per episode for this show.
With the kicker talk going on, what is the feeling on Wes Byrum? Will he be the freshman sensation of 07 or the Byrum of 08? I don't see Boulware waiting around to make a move if he struggles early on.
Miller did you see that I posted a doctor in B'ham?
jet... can I get an update on the Tejas/corndog game?
The wifey has confiscated the tv to watch the slutlerette.
OK....no more "Entertainment Tonight" talk. I just asked wifey if she knew J&K filed for divorce...she laughed at me. Just then our daughter called to inform wifey of the divorce filing. I NEVER want to know that stuff beofre the women again!!!
Are the corn dogs gonna get something going?
yes ma'am...thanks...
Braves Win! Braves Win! Braves Win!
Big deal.
Tejas 6..LSU 4: Top/9th. LSU at bat..1 out w/ men on 1st and 2nd.
Tejas 6, Corn Dogs 4 top of 9th, CDs at bat, runners on 1st and 2nd ... 1 out.
Hoopie, I am full of useless information.
Just ask the rest of my family.
WTC ... my family says I'm just useless.
I take money thing back. just heard they get $75k per episode and they do 40 per year.
That is nearly Saban money.
slutlerette?
pinch hitter Ks swinging on a 3-2 pitch ... swung at a bad 2-0 pitch and it let the pitcher back in. ... 2 down.
Strike out. Batter swung at a bad pitch on a 3-2 count. 2 outs now.
game tying double in the LF corner 6-6.
Double...score 2 runs w/2 outs. Score 6 to 6. Clutch!
Mike Patrick says "Paul Maineiri knows his team has a legitimate shot a national title."
Well, they are in the final of the CWS. That was a good clue for you, Mike.
Moron.
LSU is tough. i enjoy watching them play. How many times have they come through in the clutch in baseball over thepast few years?
Yep....MPatrick needs to never announce televised sports again.
Corn Dogs fly out to CF to end the inning ... bottom of the 9th ... Texas has one three times in the bottom of the 9th in the tournament/CWS.
woo! I love it when a game comes down to the last half of the 9th or extras...
finally got the tv back, just in time!!
Jet, are you sure M-PAt said that or was John Madden in the booth?
DMiller ...
You need to assert your husbandly authority ... and buy a second TV.
How would aluminum shavings be coming off the handle when there is a leather wrap on it?
It was that little leprechaun, Mike Patrick.
With Madden, it was kinda funny. You knew he'd been hit in the head several times.
Kinda like with Dave Rowe on the old JP broadcasts. The Unintentional Comedy Meter would explode shortly after noon on Saturdays.
With Patrick, he's supposed to be a pro. He's a schmo.
tv's cost $$$... unless my Obama Stimulus checks come in soon, that just isn't an option...
Go on the "Plasma for Plasma" campaign. I don't know what the going rate is, but Sam's and Costco have some good deals.
batter is way out on his front foot... he's trying to yank one... with 1 out, all he needs is to just put the ball in play and move the runner over..
long out...
UT batter didn't even try to get out of the way of that inside curve ball. He was sittin' on it and the ump helped out.
CWS umps not even close to MLB.
Miller - I'm sure THT could provide you some good TV buying insight.
I'm watching the CWS too. Wasn't it Robin Ventura that charged Nolan Ryan and got taken down on the mound by Ryan? Classic.
It's not a problem of picking one...
It is just that those pesky stores want money for them...
Yes, ol' Nolie had him under the arm and gave Robin "the bizness."
Norm... you are correct, good sir...
Nolan = one of my hero's
How many pitchers has UT thrown tonight?
Orel Hershiser has provided good insights..especially fundamentals.
interesting stall technique
I like Orel as an analyst...
ooh, and Erin... ooh
Erin has that steamy look going on.
Looking back on it later that night, I'm sure Robin thought "that was pretty stupid to charge a man that wrestles calves to the ground in his spare time." Or something like that.
Must ... stop ... stop.
STOP!
There.
That's sure to bring Monica out. Right?
Jet - I posted some pics onto Al Gore's Interwebs tonight. A couple of them might amuse you.
That sounded like a dinger.
FB, Norm?
Si.
where do these names come from?
mahtook, helenihi?
Is Mahtook where they found that monster washed up on the beach last year?
ol' Helen(ihi) is pulling off the ball when he swings... no wonder he's 1-15 in Omaha...
Nasty 12-6!
wasted opportunity...
poorly managed. Why not try a squeeze with helenihi when there was 1 out?
you called, Norm?
Mon,
I think Norm figured all the talk about Orel and Erin would lure you into the discussion.
If Paul tries to tell me that Mitchell is still learning to play baseball and how many holes he has in game....I am going to scream. I believe he was the 23rd pick...He can't have that many holes.
Jet - you're right. I know Mon loves Or...wait, nevermind.
Who are Orel and Erin?
hung a breaking ball right down the middle...
Hershiser and Andrews
Orel Hershiser, ex-L.A. Dodger and current professional poker player
Erin Andrews, sideline reporter/not known of her poker playing ability.
Mincy has committed to AU!!!!
LSWho!!!
Outstanding DMiller!!!
curious that scout/rivals list his 40 times as 4.4 and 4.55, or vice versa.
Rivals: The 5-10, 175-pound Mincy reportedly runs a 4.4 40-yard dash, and has a 245-pound bench press, 325-pound squat and 38-inch vertical leap.
THT,
I'd lean more towards the Rivals 4.4 than the Scout 4.55...
His film is pretty good, and he plays fast. He has an impressive offer list.
Welcome aboard Mr. Mincey. Maybe we'll get a gaggle of guys that July 4th weekend.
The attrition of the 2006 and 2007 classes is way overblown. All you have to do is look at the starters on offense. A large percentage are 4 starts.
Mincy looks like a nice pickup. His ratings aren't through the roof, but his offer list is pretty impressive.
Here's a highlight reel of Jonathan Mincy.
vous-tube
The guy is legit.
Good morning Hotties!
It's 74 days until kickoff!
Do I have to say his name? Do I have to speak his name? In our corner, the first SEC player to win both the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy; 3-time All-SEC; 2-time Consensus All-American; SEC Player of the Year; one of the most respected Auburn alumni to ever play the game; The Immovable Force; The Master of Disaster (to opposing offenses); The King of the Line of Scrimmage... our very own COACH TRACY ROCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAPPY TRACY ROCKER DAY
AND WARRRRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!!
Now that'll get you fired up in the morning! Well done THT!
G'morning folks!
Mincy last night? Could we get hit with a Mack truck today??
Good morning, Hotties. T. Dub made a good run in the final round, but it just wasn't enough. Barnes sure did choke. I can't believe he went from -11 at one point, to -1.
D. Miller, Brookwood Internists is a great place. They have several doctors there. I would recommend Dr. Timothy Real, Dr. Frederickson or either one of the Risers. If you don't want to drive to Brookwood, Aye Unnoppet is good. She is located across the street from Shelby Baptist.
Good morning all.
Mincy was a nice pickup. Mack would be even nicer.
Morning Hotties - it's still my day off, I'm tired, awake and watching an AWFUL show called Max and Ruby with my son. I'll be your sacrificial lamb and hope that you please learn from my experience. Do not allow your child to watch this show. It grinds my gears as much as the show my wife & daughter love to watch - that show about the evil woman and her 8 kids.
That's all I have. Welcome to AU Mincy. Happy T-Rock day.
Keep Hate Alive.
I-65 South at Clanton has become a parking lot. So much for getting to work on time.
Saban questioning the ethics of media coverage of recruiting? That's a little hard to swallow. (credit Chris Low)
I just saw a med evac helicopter. Not a good sign. I hope whoever was involved will be ok.... That's more important than me getting to work on time.
Norm- "Grinds my gears". I love it, don't know if it was an intentional "Family Guy" reference, but I took it as so.
Norm...
My six yr old has discovered youtube. Give this a whirl. Now imagine that about 30 times in a row. Welcome to my house.
Just watched the Mincy video for the first time. He doesn't have great technique on his backpedal (which can easily be taught), but he sure does play aggressively and hit hard for a DB. I like a DB with a mean streak

I'm thinking Tim Real is an AU alum, therefore, he is strongly recommended ;-)
Did y'all know I'm hatin' bama 24/7?
Oh yes I am.
GO TIGERS!!!
21 seconds ehyou, that's all I could take
great read JGT. i didn't know anything about the guy. it's impressive he stuck around to hold the ship together during the post-CTT days. all hail Lolley!
may every hottie have a great Tracy Rocker day!
bless your heart ehyou. that was way too chipper this early in the morning. yikes!
ehyou,
I feel for you. Just wait a bit, they'll forget about this and be into something else obnoxious. But, being a parent is all good!
Funny, it feels like August outside with the temperature getting above 95 and closer and closer to 100, but football is still so far away.
Good morning hotties, you know it's going to be a good day when you wake up to news of a new committment to Les Tigres.
I'm heading out in a bit to attempt to buy a new car. Another Honda Accord, I know it's not sexy, but that's what it is.
Anyone have any tips about getting the best price? I am paying cash, no trade in. I have been to Edmunds and gotten the actual invoice for the model I want. What is reasonable to offer above that?
Cincy, I just go in there and say here's what I want to pay. And I keep pointing to that number until they get sufficiently close or else I just leave.
As far as a percentage, I would go maybe 2 or 3 percent above invoice. Nothing higher in this market.

"D.Miller

Yes, Dr. Real is an AU alum. I'm not sure if Dr. Frederickson is an alum, but he's a big fan.
cincy, sean is right. Stand firm, they want to sell you a car WAY worse than you want to spend money on one. You are doing them a favor, not vice versa. Do your homework before you go. Know what the options cost, but also know what they are worth. I hate buying a car but i love knowing what i need to know and shooting down guys that wanna sell me that $500 clear coat or whatever they are trying to peddle me that i don't need.
I've finally located a clutch alignment tool for my 1960 vw singlecab, the engine has been waiting 2 weeks to go in because of that part. I'm hoping i get to drive it to the beach this afternoon.
BinOBA,
Yeah, the dealer options are what they try to kill you on. Last time I bought a car, the big thing was etching the VIN on all the windows, to the tune of several hundred dollars. Still haven't figured out what the benefit to that was.
I am getting the V-6, EXL with Navigation, so there really aren't any other options that I want. I am going to go to three different dealers in B'ham today and negotiate their best price. Then I am going to ask "Is this the number you would like your offer evaluated upon?" We'll see how it goes.
We will be in Auburn this weekend, so I can check out Sylacauga and Auburn.

Tar Heel, ever hear of Charles Boackle? I think he's an alum too. How do I know this about these doctors? I used to work there. Why do I not work there anymore? I hated the drive - I can't stand traffic.
That's the stupidest thing I think I've ever seen. I'm going to go and look up Rivals and Scout, something that should be used for entertainment purposes only, and base my entire team's fortunes on "expert" opinion and not my staff's.
If I was a Miami alum, that article would make me seethe.
I went ahead and posted a Mincy thread.
Cincy -- Flood the dealerships in and around your area with faxes (to the FLEET MANAGER) telling them what you want and how much you'll pay.
Someone will bite. Done deal.
