Alabama takes a (small) hit
Hey everyone. I know this is an Auburn blog and all, but we stray from that basis occasionally.
Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News is reporting that Alabama isn't going to face major sanctions for the textbook scandal that has grabbed headlines during the past nine months or so.
A portion of the story:

A portion of the story:
It was also not clear if the vacated wins penalty was due to the participation of any of the five players who were suspended for four games in the 2007 season — Antoine Caldwell, Glen Coffee, Marlon Davis, Marquis Johnson and Chris Rogers — or participation by another player or players who should have been ruled ineligible for improperly receiving extra benefits including textbooks or other academic material. Alabama is not expected to vacate its 2007 victory over Tennessee or an Independence Bowl win over Colorado at the end of the 2007 season.Thoughts?

time will tell.. just give it a few weeks something else will pop up...
evil breeds evil....
Good morning Dear Leader. I've got a target in mind for one of those new missiles you're testing.
Luv - thanks, I did arrive safely. Lots of great tunes in route (I hereby declare the iPod the greatest invention since music went off the morning radio)
I have also decreed that it is officially lunch time since the refrigerator at this place is broken.
Hopefully, this is just the warm-up for the next round of NCAA sanctions. Is there a more meaningless penalty then taking wins away from a team from 2-3 years ago?
Sorry, Jay G, I didn't think Coach Quick's thread should have been "muddied" either, but I didn't know when you might start a new one!
Tar Heel, you need to get satellite radio. I used to be opposed to paying for radio, but now that I have it, it's all I listen to!
depressed, that's what I was thinking!
Word is heads have to roll at Bama for this one, it probably will be Mal Moore, even with his ties to da bear. I hate to say it, he probably had no idea it was going on, but they always shoot the captain of the ship first. Wins vacated is not a big deal in my book, who keeps up, not me. Unless you are Bobby Bowden and it keeps the all times wins record out of your grasp. The bigger issue is that they are on probation, it basically means nothing, not a smidge of issues can come up in those three years or it goes back to Dubose time, thats the bigger issue in my opinion. Ok, enough lets move on shall we.
Luv - with my iPod, there is ZERO risk of a Steely Dan song. I'd rather have talk radio, or even disco, than have one of their songs pop up on the airwaves. Yes, I hate them that much.
Is something else coming Bama's way? Who knows? Who cares? It's all just off-season fodder.
What I do care about is seeing Auburn play football this fall. I can't wait!!
ehyou - according to Walter Reeves, it's 86 days.
I find this kind of hilarious because it has been such a big topic for so long. The biggest part of the penalties is Bama being on probation for 3 years. The rest of the penalties are pretty much meaningless.
THT...
I can understand not being your favorite, but how can you hate Steely Dan? They are one of my 5 favorite groups ever. I have all seven of their albums on my i-pod. They are consummate musicians and music doesn't get much tighter.
Walter Reeves...if anyone has an autographed picture of him i need it for my collection. i can't find him anywhere. :)
Thank God this is finally coming out so that we can on from something that was never going to be anything.
THT & ehyou - I've seen more concerts than I can remember. One of them was Steely Dan. From a sheer talent and musical point of view, that was the absolute without a doubt best ever. There have been others I've enjoyed more for one reason or another, but that's that.
ehyou - they sing about the infidels. 'nuff said. Oh wait, not 'nuff said.
I HATE BAMA!!!
Now 'nuff said
I loved me some Travelin' Shoes by Elvin Bishop this morning
Nice avatar, Norm.
Oh, I see. They do mention the crimson tide in Deacon Blues. I guess if I wasn't a fan, that would be enough to sway me the other way too.
This comment has been removed by the author.
THT...
Now we can agree on Bishop. I don't have any of his solo stuff, but I do have 2 Paul Butterfield albums that he was on. Michael Bloomfield ain't bad either.
News last night reported 3 years of probation which could be the biggest deal in all of this. Any violation might be the tipping point with the NCAA after the last 15 years of repeated violations. Even secondary violations may be a bigger deal for them now.
ehyou, this is a family blog; please refrain from using profanity ;-)
Since my fingers had never typed those words, I had to peck it out with my index fingers.
I only have a couple of Elvin Bishop tunes, but Travelin' Shoes is by far the best. Great guitar
next time, peck it out with your middle finger
Well played THT, well played.
BTW, since the Gene Jelks allegations surfaced in November 1992, not a day has passed wherein the University of Alabama's major revenue-generating sports (football and men's basketball) were not either (a) under NCAA investigation, (b) on NCAA probation, or (c) actively committing violations that later led to (a) and (b).
THT...
I've been wondering, where were you from about Feb through Apr? If it's personal, feel free to rebuke me.
I'm just glad we haven't been caught lately, knock on wood.
I wonder if Willis would have stooped so low and, if under the spell of the one who wears the mark of the beast, would report himself (i.e. his former employer) to NCAA
Can you be vindicated when you admit wrongdoing?
A salsa shark is nothing more than a tortilla chip that wasn't strong enough.
Here's to another 3 years of the University of Alabama being under probation!
This comment has been removed by the author.
This isn't even a slap on the wrist considering it happened during the 5 year probationary period. I was expecting much worse, and Alabama should feel lucky if thats all they receive.
Actually, THT was placed in a medically induced coma by the Habotn team physician.
Sean, help!!! There's no refrigerator to keep my stash of DCs cold :-(
How do you rank a guy the number 1 corner back in the country when he hasn't played CB since early in his 9th grade year?
The more I learn about the ranking the more I think they are poppycock.
Why doesn't HABOTN start it's own non-poppycock recruit rankings?
If the Gadsden rumors ever produce fruit, this could make the hammer fall that much harder. Lull the bammies into a sense of relief, then hit em hard
we've got the expert analysis of JayGT and Omnica, who knows all the recruits, not biblically, but in a facebook sort of way.
is FSJ handing out free 3g iPhones to all the bammer recruits up in Gadsden?
We can assign them scoops? We want 5 Scoop Recruits?
GREAT idea, Monica. Anything that reminds me of ice cream has got to be great!!!
so, you could have a 5-Scoop recruit with sprinkles and a cherry on top? now that would be a stud prospect right there.
I even like saying "5 Scoop Recruit".
I bet Jet could write a wicked tune for that.
I can hear "5 Scoop Recruit" being played to "Hard Days Night". I'm sure Jet could run with that one.
and anytime bama gets a commit we could watch the scoops melt away!
Guess what Hotties, it's your lucky hour. I have to do some work now.
I'll take it and run.
THT, get those guys on ice...they're much better that way.
vindication by verification of the fact bammer was cheating across the board by handing out textbooks? football dodged this bullet for the most part (and rightfully so) but other sports were a little more reckless. i'll be interested to see what they get.
this ruling being handed down is extremely important irregardless of the sanctions imposed at this time and regardless of the spin that comes out. it extends the repeat violator window for another x number of years. if there is anything to ANY of the numerous rumors of cars, cash and jobs, they'll be begging to give back their 36-0 win.
think about it. if the ncaa already has tag#s vin#s and much other evidence of alleged REC recruiting activities, as is being rumored, why do anything more than go ahead and vacate their football wins for this offense? the heavy stuff will come later if that is the case. it would be like hitting an elephant with a fly swatter before dropping a nuke on him.
i still think there are too many bammer players driving nice new cars and too many other individual rumors surfacing that at least one or two of them have some truth in there somewhere. patience will be what it needed. the ncaa moves at its own pace and knows two speeds. slow and slower.
Update from Digger:
Mrs. Digger is off the ventilator during the day and she (and therefore Digger) are sleeping much better at night.
Good news Mon!
Chip...I can feel your passion, but IF anything comes out of "The Great Gadsden", it will be a while. It probably serves both fanbases well to just let it die until something does show up.
Now...after saying that.....did you read the post over on one of the UGA/AJC blogs from the guy that lives in Fla? He is from Gadsden and his family works in the school system. If there is any cred to his story...then there is a fire burning in Gadsden.
Thanks Mon...prayers sent for Mrs. Digger and the Quick family.
Hoopie you can't dangle a treat like that in front of us and not give us a link! :-)
When I read the title to this thread, my first thought was Nick Saban smoking a little pot.
Good news Mon!
Jay, you/ve made it to the bigtime!!! You got a bama douchebag hangin out to post first on your blog. Bless his heart.
What kind of punishment is vacating victories? It's not like we didn't win those games on the field. Just more of the NCAA and their bogus rulings.
As far as Gadsden, there is nothing going on there except Saban locking the best players from there into the Crimson Tide fold.
Scott CHOCOLATE!!! You are SO my favorite and you know why!!
Thank you, monica, for the update.
Salsa, being a bammer, does not know the meaning of the word 'Vindication'. Too many syllables for a bammer's IQ.
I'm going to wait till verification of the 'slap on the wrist' before commenting on it. Considering that most of the bammer football players do not know what 'books' are, I was not expecting too much of football involvement.

The NCAA will reveal later Thursday that the Alabama football program must vacate victories from 2005 through 2007 that included players who improperly got free textbooks for other students, the Birmingham News is reporting.
I am just saying ESPN is saying otherwise.
Steely Dan is obviously very talented. You can tell because they definitely didn't get by on their looks. Now, the funny part of Steely Dan is where their name came from.
yall go over to some other blogs and see if you can find some of mr salsa sharks former brilliance in the forums. He's just full of..... "personality" Bless his heart.
steely dan took jazz and applied to rock music. They're pretty amazing,oh and i'm gonna go see them this weekend.
Salsa never seems to have anything to say but says it anyway. He is a non-story.
milton burles wife must be proud.
Steely Dan got their name out of a book. Steely Dan was the name given a device, ummmm, that a woman uses to pleasure herself.
Steve, I don't mean to sound like a b****, but everyone knows that.
Tar Heel Tiger said...
"next time, peck it out with your middle finger."
Tar Heel, that made me LOL!
Hahaha, or possibly every woman:)
Steely Dan is one of those bands I tried to force myself to like. Just never happened. Their name is fitting since their songs sound like porno music.
Michael is indeed my hero.
SteveFC - well...that's another reason for me to hate them. Thankfully, MrsTHT doesn't need any Steely Dan...music.
puhleeze
I actually like Steely Dan, but I will never admit it. It definitely isn't macho.
It really tickles me to see a Bambi refer to Bama being put on probation again as vindication. Such is the bizarre mind of a Bambi.
What about OLD Steely Dan?
In today's market Steely Dan wouldn't have a chance.
Well, seeing that music pretty much dies in the early 90s, Steely Dan wouldn't fit. I do hate it for the kids these days because the music they are growing up with is so simple and frankly boring.
I think they would, Sean. They were never really mainstream after Reelin in the Years anyway, so they are perfect for the snooty internet generation.
Steve, anything short of major penalties is now considered a victory by the Bama Nation. I expect to see "Got minor penalties? We Do!" T-shirts in the near future celebrating their latest milestone.
Three years probation isn't minor, but it certainly isn't as bad as it could have been. Their penalties actually turned out being a bit more severe than I had anticipated.
ESPN fantasy matchup puts AU vs ND at the top of the list.
ESPN Fantasy Matchups
I'd LOVE to see us play ND.
So can the Alabama football team not travel to other states without contacting their parole officer?
I would love to see Florida State play Penn State. Bowden vs Paterno would be huge.
I thought AU-Furman was a bad bad matchup.
But I am amazed that bammers play some mighty hard teams like Florida international goldfish, north Texas sparrows and Chattanooga gerbils.
Aero...
Mansell says it wouldn't be a very competitive game. I thought ND was supposed to be decent this year? I guess he knows they can't hang in the SEC.
it's a shame ND refuses to play us.
Penn St and Florida St played in a BCS bowl just a couple of years ago. I don't think I would have put that one the list.
Does Bobby Bowden even know what Fla St's playbook contains anymore? It is embarassing to watch a sideline reporter ask him a question, and see him try to gather his thoughts to answer in a reasonable way. It's really sad to see.
Renaldo to real madrid. Real madrid is going new york yankees on everyone and is gonna buy them a champeen-ship. Kaka and Renaldo should make real madrid unstoppable, if they can share the ball, we'll see.
I wouldn't mind AU vs Pitt, only cause I like visiting both places.
I think we should renew our rivalries with Fort Benning, Maxwell Field, and Georgia Navy P-F.
Those are regional teams so I'm sure the stadium would be full. I've heard there fans travel well.
oops, *their
there now, I feel better
BinOBA, what are you talking about??
he's talking Futbol, Luv.
THTjr would understand, me, not so much.
competitive pet grooming
After reading it several times, that's what I assumed.
and I was responding to Tar Heel.
BinOBA, are you being serious or a smarta**?
I'd love to have a reason to go to Pittsburgh and eat at Permanti brothers deli.
i was being a smart-aleck. I'm talking european football. I save the competitive pet grooming talk to all the bama blogs i visit daily.
ReeAL Madrid is one of the greatest soccer, oops, excuse moi, football teams in Europe. If you want to know more, they have a home page and a wikipedia entry. It certainly won't offend me if you don't want to know more about them. I don't either.
BinOBA - I would very much like to also recommend

LOL
LuvAU's last comments matched the innocent curiosity of the picture in her avatar.
that's nice tht, anything else you don't want to know any more about but care to comment on?
oh yeah, i've been all over p'burg. My father in law has a lil stroke up there and shows me a great time every time i go.
ok, time killin is over, off to work, yall have a good day and take care.
somebody call a code!
what seems to be the problem?
the thread is about to Will
Just step back and give it room to breathe. All it needs is a little oxygen and it will be fine.
I need a charge...clear!
Sean, start a Diet Coke IV, STAT!
THT,
"DID YOU ORDER THE CODE RED?"
Yo Scottie B, I think we've got a pulse!
sorry, I can't remember Jack's lines.
500ml DC flowing, doc
He says something along the lines of "YOU'RE GD RIGHT I DID!"
Since I would be a huge Braves fan if I still paid attention to besball, someone tell me where the Braves are in the standings.
Braves are about 6 back from the Phils and 2 back from the Mets. They were on a 3 game streak but lost a nailbiter last night. They finish the series with Pitt tonight and then go on the road to visit Baltimore, Cincy and Boston.
THT, I have a blog, you can find it my profile, that chronicles the Braves.
I recommend an all-syrup Squishy to ensure an entertaining continuation of the recently revived thread.
We lived in Pittsburgh back when Bonds was a skinny kid and Sid Bream was jetting around third for the Braves. It was great. I was one of the few people in that city happy with the outcome 2 years in a row. I've always liked the Pirates, but the Braves were on a whole nuther level of love.
Just returned home after my big sit-down interview with Gene and Jonna Chizik.
We talked about football only in the peripheral sense. It was mostly about their relationship, who Gene was, who Gene is, how Jonna envisions her role as the first lady of Auburn football.
I think you'll enjoy the story when it drops ... at some point in July.
Track Em Tigers has a nice overview of the SEC and what the trend is for each team. In general, I agree with the assessment.
Auburn is self reporting secondary violations evidently?
now that is a Braves fan. Nice work, Sean!
I'm so pathetic the only name I know now is Chipper Jones. I miss the days of Cha Cha, the Kitten, Felipe, the Hammer, the BEEEG Boy, and Milo Hamilton.
Thanks Jay GT! I can't wait, but I guess I will.
other than Luper's phone number on Facebook, you heard something else AU1N04?
Marshall mentioned that Toomer's corner was an issue
I love me some secondary violations.
I think PMarsh misunderstood. It wasn't an issue, it was covered in tissue.
Now THAT is funny!
Hmmm...Salsa Shark's comment "mysteriously" disappeared...
Daaah da dah duh
Daaah da dah duh daaaaaah
Good catch, Luv!
Someone told me that the whole Toomer's Corner thing shouldn't be an issue...but with my stml, I forget why!
Dear Leader is back on top where he belongs.
I think salsa had to vacate the win.
I'm literally LOL, Tar Heel! You're on fiyah today!
Must be that DC IV.
Now THAT is also funny!
He is, it's that 500ml drip I started for him.
Luv, you stole my thunder!
Best sentence I have read today! It was an oopsie!
But Alabama administrators asked the NCAA to recognize that many of the athletes did not mean to violate the rules, and that the school has since fixed the system.
Does that mean they fired this person?
Documents have shown that the violations were discovered by a University of Alabama Supply Store employee after seeing one student's account in excess of $1,600.
I need a bolus, not a drip!
Sorry, Seanzie!
"...many of the student athletes didn't mean to violate the rules..."
I have to call BS on that one!
Ignorance is not a defense for breaking the rules.
They knew exactly what they were doing and they knew it was wrong.
I would not be surprised if Auburn turns in a secondary or two from Big Cat Weekend.
The pep rally is pretty clearly against NCAA rules, though the transgression isn't going to draw a harsh penalty. Auburn (and every other school) self-reports secondaries pretty frequently.
You just don't hear about them.
How is a pep rally against NCAA rules?
well crap, I've got work to do :-( I'll try to check back in b4 the long commute
JGT - While you bring that up...why have we heard more about them recently ie. UT and Kiffin, AU and the like?
Is it because they are new Coaches?
My favorite scene from HABOTN Redemption
Warden Salsa Shark: [frustrated] Lord, it's a miracle! Post up and vanished like a fart in the wind! Nothing left but some damn rocks on the windowsill. And that cupcake on the wall! Let's ask her, maybe she knows.
Warden Salsa Shark: [to poster poster of Omnica on wall] What say you there, fuzzy-britches?
Since Auburn didn't sponsor the rolling of Toomer's, I don't think that is specifically a violation. I do think there are likely a few secondary violations that came from that, which shouldn't be a big deal. They will likely tweak Big Cat Weekend for next season.
NCAA Bylaw 13.10.5 prohibits teams from promoting a prospect's visit or participating ``in team activities that would make the public or media aware of the prospective student-athlete's visit to the institution (e.g., running out of the tunnel with team, celebratory walks to or around the stadium/arena, on-field pregame celebrations)."
The pep rally was planned, included lots of regular fans and those fans knew to be there because the information was disseminated through several channels.
A few HOTTIES even discussed plans to attend the event earlier that day.
That looks like a violation to me.
Again, it's not a violation that's going to affect the team much ... if at all.
I'm not sure who I learned about it from, but it certainly wasn't AU. Of course, my source may have heard about it from AU.
Hotties, let's all meet and roll Toomer's Corner on the first Saturday evening of June next year in celebration of the school year being over. Anyone in town is welcome to attend this non-athletic function.
Sports radio in Atlanta is getting a chuckle out of the Alabama "Did we really win that many games when Shula was here?" punishment.
It's funny to me how the NCAA picks and chooses it's battles. With the MLB draft being this week, ESPN was running the story with Strasburg and how Scott Boras was his "advisor" and not his agent. I know the NCAA is competing with the MLB to get some talent in their ranks with baseball but what would happen in say, Anotonio Coleman went ahead and got Pay Dye Jr. as his special advisor for his future but didn't call him his agent?
In a few years, you had Dwayne Jarrett having his rent paid(despite not having a job, he got off with paying it back), the whole Reggie Bush/agent thing and OJ Mayo and the crack team at yahoo sports appears to have done more investigating then the whole NCAA. Oklahoma had Rhett Bomar getting a cushy job and the NCAA was on them in a heartbeat.
Alabama is now more or less breaking rules while on probation and they get more probation? I hope the national media makes as much of a joke as possible of this "punishment" b/c that's what it is.
Jay G, what about when they invite recruits to football games? They actually have them stand inside the ropes at Tiger Walk (I know because every week they stand in front of me and I can't see!) and they stand on the sidelines. There's media all over. How is that different?
I'm not trying to be a smarta**. This is a sincere question.
3 more years in the sin bin for bama. Is it wrong of me to hope for more. Wrong? Of course not. Immature? Perhaps, but certainly not wrong.
Where has Jet been today?
JET'S RULE OF RECRUITING NO. 1
"If you ain't secondary violatin', you ain't tryin'."
is he still at Camp War Eagle?
Was he spending the weekend too?
Just got back to the Gump ... got a lot of work to do ... leaving for Minneapolis tomorrow through Tuesday.
I'll join the fray later.
Minneapolis??? That's a fer piece!
Having recruits at an event isn't a problem.
It's when you promote the fact that recruits are there ... that's when the problems begin.
You can't tell me the rolling of Toomer's Corner was a spontaneous show of support. Auburn people were told to be there and, as such, it's reasonable to assume details of that event were "leaked" to create a buzz that would impress the recruits.
Gotcha. Thanks, Jay G!
Well, gotta let the boys in. It's hot out there! It's also about nap time!
what if a recruit mentioned it on his FB and that is how word got out, hypothetically speaking. I wonder if that would be a violation.
if not, then I'm sure that's what happened ;-)
I can just see NCAA outlawing Monica from becoming FB friends with high school boys :-(
Harrison, when you make an appearance, I'll give you the breakdown on today's "real" beer purchases, if you're interested. I'm excited about what I got, but worried about whether it will make it until I leave for the beach on Saturday. I'd better put it where I can't see it.
OK, I am challening myself to come up with, before the end of the night, the lyrics to "Five Scoop Recruit," which I think -- think -- will be to the tune of "Little Red Corvette" by Prince.
We'll see.
I've nothing to say, and no one to say it to, but I can say it in three different languages.
I will apologize to Prince this weekend in Minneapolis ...
"FIVE SCOOP RECRUIT" by Prince, arranged Jet.

Butt off to prep school
Bellefay1, I actually think Bama's punishment was more severe than I anticipated. This textbook thing was not nearly as big of a deal as the press made out. Bama self reported it when they discovered the problem. Being put on probation for 3 more years is significant since during that time a major violation could cost you a football team.
Jay, the most damning evidence I see is that Aubie attended the event. But on the other hand if I have heard correctly there weren't a lot of people there, around 100. If Auburn can't get more than 100 people to a pep rally, there is something terribly wrong. I don't believe the school planned the event, but the certainly used it and there may be issues with regard to that.
Aubie was just on his way to Bodega's, and he got caught up with the atmosphere like everyone else.
You see, Aubie has a bit of a drinking problem.
Jet - you should be a lyricist. you can get royalties doncha know
I wonder why Aubie drinks so much. It probably stems from the fact that he has never won that Capital One Mascot Challenge thing. Or maybe it's because he kind of wonders if he made the right choices in life. After all, the football games and the adoration of the kids are nice, but would he rather be stalking prey in the jungles of India and leading a more simple, less anthropomorphic life?
I just think he's self-conscious about his big feet.
I am about to start another coaching profile. I think I'll make this one about Jay Boulware.
I'm dangling that Trooper Taylor report like a carrot, I tell ya.
Steve, it was 100 people rolling the trees on a Friday.
What were they celebrating?
D-Day Eve?
cinqo de juno?
I like carrots
It's not just Aubie's feet that are big!
May His judgment cometh, and that right soon!
(Your pic made me say that, Aubie.)
MissTHT -I'm logged into google now.
(Sorry to the Hotties for this personal message)
The celebration was in anticipation of Auburn being named one of the 10 best places to live in the U.S. Trooper is also a psychic.
How can you be so obtuse?
I'd like think that the last thing that went through Saban's mind, other than Eltoro's foot, was how in the hell Gene Chizik got the best of him.
Nothing stops. Nothing... or you will do the hardest time there is. No more protection from the Red Elephant Club. I'll pull you out of that one-bunk Hilton and cast you down with the Sodomites and Bammers. You'll think you've been hit by a train! And the football complex? Gone... sealed off, brick-by-brick. We'll have us a little book barbecue in the yard. They'll see the flames for miles. We'll dance around it like wild Injuns! You understand me? Catching my drift?... Or am I being obtuse?
Why do I have no idea what the heck is going on?
Maybe because it's 5 in the morning here?
I got the impression reading the release on the violations that the committee was getting really fed up with seeing Bama all the time. I think the 3 years probation was a warning that they had better not be in front of them again.
But I do not like scrolling all the way down to find out if anyone said anything that might make sense to me.
So help me God, lets turn the page.
