Alabama takes a (small) hit

Hey everyone. I know this is an Auburn blog and all, but we stray from that basis occasionally.

Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News is reporting that Alabama isn't going to face major sanctions for the textbook scandal that has grabbed headlines during the past nine months or so.

A portion of the story:
It was also not clear if the vacated wins penalty was due to the participation of any of the five players who were suspended for four games in the 2007 season — Antoine Caldwell, Glen Coffee, Marlon Davis, Marquis Johnson and Chris Rogers — or participation by another player or players who should have been ruled ineligible for improperly receiving extra benefits including textbooks or other academic material. Alabama is not expected to vacate its 2007 victory over Tennessee or an Independence Bowl win over Colorado at the end of the 2007 season.
Thoughts?

Hopefully, this is just the warm-up for the next round of NCAA sanctions. Is there a more meaningless penalty then taking wins away from a team from 2-3 years ago?

Word is heads have to roll at Bama for this one, it probably will be Mal Moore, even with his ties to da bear. I hate to say it, he probably had no idea it was going on, but they always shoot the captain of the ship first. Wins vacated is not a big deal in my book, who keeps up, not me. Unless you are Bobby Bowden and it keeps the all times wins record out of your grasp. The bigger issue is that they are on probation, it basically means nothing, not a smidge of issues can come up in those three years or it goes back to Dubose time, thats the bigger issue in my opinion. Ok, enough lets move on shall we.

Luv - with my iPod, there is ZERO risk of a Steely Dan song. I'd rather have talk radio, or even disco, than have one of their songs pop up on the airwaves. Yes, I hate them that much.

I find this kind of hilarious because it has been such a big topic for so long. The biggest part of the penalties is Bama being on probation for 3 years. The rest of the penalties are pretty much meaningless.

vindication by verification of the fact bammer was cheating across the board by handing out textbooks? football dodged this bullet for the most part (and rightfully so) but other sports were a little more reckless. i'll be interested to see what they get.

this ruling being handed down is extremely important irregardless of the sanctions imposed at this time and regardless of the spin that comes out. it extends the repeat violator window for another x number of years. if there is anything to ANY of the numerous rumors of cars, cash and jobs, they'll be begging to give back their 36-0 win.

think about it. if the ncaa already has tag#s vin#s and much other evidence of alleged REC recruiting activities, as is being rumored, why do anything more than go ahead and vacate their football wins for this offense? the heavy stuff will come later if that is the case. it would be like hitting an elephant with a fly swatter before dropping a nuke on him.

i still think there are too many bammer players driving nice new cars and too many other individual rumors surfacing that at least one or two of them have some truth in there somewhere. patience will be what it needed. the ncaa moves at its own pace and knows two speeds. slow and slower.

The pep rally was planned, included lots of regular fans and those fans knew to be there because the information was disseminated through several channels.

A few HOTTIES even discussed plans to attend the event earlier that day.

That looks like a violation to me.

Again, it's not a violation that's going to affect the team much ... if at all.

I'm not sure who I learned about it from, but it certainly wasn't AU. Of course, my source may have heard about it from AU.

Hotties, let's all meet and roll Toomer's Corner on the first Saturday evening of June next year in celebration of the school year being over. Anyone in town is welcome to attend this non-athletic function.

Sports radio in Atlanta is getting a chuckle out of the Alabama "Did we really win that many games when Shula was here?" punishment.

It's funny to me how the NCAA picks and chooses it's battles. With the MLB draft being this week, ESPN was running the story with Strasburg and how Scott Boras was his "advisor" and not his agent. I know the NCAA is competing with the MLB to get some talent in their ranks with baseball but what would happen in say, Anotonio Coleman went ahead and got Pay Dye Jr. as his special advisor for his future but didn't call him his agent?

In a few years, you had Dwayne Jarrett having his rent paid(despite not having a job, he got off with paying it back), the whole Reggie Bush/agent thing and OJ Mayo and the crack team at yahoo sports appears to have done more investigating then the whole NCAA. Oklahoma had Rhett Bomar getting a cushy job and the NCAA was on them in a heartbeat.

Alabama is now more or less breaking rules while on probation and they get more probation? I hope the national media makes as much of a joke as possible of this "punishment" b/c that's what it is.

Jay G, what about when they invite recruits to football games? They actually have them stand inside the ropes at Tiger Walk (I know because every week they stand in front of me and I can't see!) and they stand on the sidelines. There's media all over. How is that different?

I'm not trying to be a smarta**. This is a sincere question.

Having recruits at an event isn't a problem.

It's when you promote the fact that recruits are there ... that's when the problems begin.

You can't tell me the rolling of Toomer's Corner was a spontaneous show of support. Auburn people were told to be there and, as such, it's reasonable to assume details of that event were "leaked" to create a buzz that would impress the recruits.

OK, I am challening myself to come up with, before the end of the night, the lyrics to "Five Scoop Recruit," which I think -- think -- will be to the tune of "Little Red Corvette" by Prince.

We'll see.

"FIVE SCOOP RECRUIT" by Prince, arranged Jet.

See you’re the kinda playa

Love ‘em and leave ‘em fast

And I say what have I got 2 lose?

Five Scoop Recruit
Baby, you’re much 2 fast
Five Scoop Recruit
U need a love that’s gonna last

I guess I shoulda closed my eyes
When I dreamed of you runnin’
For a 90-yard TD

‘Cuz I felt a little ill
When I saw all your pictures
Of the coaches that were there before Chiz.

Believe it or not
I started to worry
About your senior Math class

But it was Big Cat night
I guess that makes it all right
And I say, baby, have u got yo ACT?
Oh yeah

Five Scoop Recruit
Baby youre much 2 fast, yes u r
Five Scoop Recruit
U need 2 find a love that’s gonna last

Calves like yours (calves like yours)

Sign here baby (sign here baby)
Gimme UAT their keys (gimme the Charger keys)
We’re gonna hook up to Trooper’s adrenaine machine

Five Scoop Recruit

Bellefay1, I actually think Bama's punishment was more severe than I anticipated. This textbook thing was not nearly as big of a deal as the press made out. Bama self reported it when they discovered the problem. Being put on probation for 3 more years is significant since during that time a major violation could cost you a football team.

3:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, the most damning evidence I see is that Aubie attended the event. But on the other hand if I have heard correctly there weren't a lot of people there, around 100. If Auburn can't get more than 100 people to a pep rally, there is something terribly wrong. I don't believe the school planned the event, but the certainly used it and there may be issues with regard to that.

Aubie was just on his way to Bodega's, and he got caught up with the atmosphere like everyone else.

4:22 PM
Blogger michael said...

I wonder why Aubie drinks so much. It probably stems from the fact that he has never won that Capital One Mascot Challenge thing. Or maybe it's because he kind of wonders if he made the right choices in life. After all, the football games and the adoration of the kids are nice, but would he rather be stalking prey in the jungles of India and leading a more simple, less anthropomorphic life?

We'll have us a little book barbecue in the yard. They'll see the flames for miles. We'll dance around it like wild Injuns! You understand me? Catching my drift?... Or am I being obtuse?
