Coaching snapshot: Tommy Thigpen
TOMMY THIGPEN
Age: 38 (born 3/17/71)
College: B.A. from North Carolina, 1993 (political science)
Playing career: Signed with North Carolina in 1989. Played four years there, started three at linebacker. Earned All-ACC accolades three times. Played briefly in the NFL and World League.
Coaching career:
•Auburn, safeties (current)
•North Carolina, linebackers (2005-08)
•Illinois, defensive backs (2003) and linebackers (2004)
•Bowling Green, defensive backs and special teams (2001-02) **under Urban Meyer**
•Tennessee State, linebackers (2000)
•North Carolina, graduate assistant (1998-99)
Mentor:
Mack Brown. Though he's now in his 12th season at Texas, where he's enjoyed a lot of success, Brown spent nine years as North Carolina's coach beginning in 1988. Brown recruited Thigpen to UNC and played a pivotal role in Thigpen getting his coaching start with the Tar Heels.
Thigpen also credits Ron Case, who was a defensive assistant at UNC during Thigpen's days as a graduate assistant. Case favored a highly aggressive, man-to-man approach to secondary work.
Previous Auburn experience:
None.
Coaching philosophy:
Thigpen is a cerebral kind of coach. He's not a screamer. He doesn't coax effort from his players through tantrums. In fact, Thigpen may go five minutes without saying a word on the practice field.
That doesn't mean he's a wallflower. Thigpen, who still is in excellent shape, has no problem running alongside his players as they work through a drill. He may say something. He may not. Thigpen simply likes reminding the players that their work, even the mundane stuff, is being cataloged.
``To me, you lead by bringing your pads," Thigpen said during spring drills. ``I'm not into that rah-rah. I know a lot of people are. If you go out there and knock somebody out, the crowd will do all that for you."
His primary concern, as you can see through that quote, is making sure Auburn's safeties understand their administrative responsibilities. He believes shrewd recruiting and practice time will hone the physical end of things automatically. Teaching players how to think analytically in real time, he believes, is the difference between a good player and a great one.
Personality profile:
Trooper Taylor gets all the publicity for being Mr. Friendly -- nearly all of it deserved -- but Thigpen also has surplus congeniality. He's a happy guy. He smiles more than Taylor, in fact, and has no problem striking up conversations.
If I was a recruit, Thigpen is the guy I'd want as my primary contact.
With that said, he's not exactly outgoing. Thigpen isn't one to skip down the hall whistling Cameo's "Word Up." Thigpen is relatively quiet, but will open up quickly. He doesn't mince words. He'll assess players pretty evenly.
I haven't yet gotten a strong feel for Thigpen's contribution to the program's recruiting enterprise. My guess is that he plays a role similar to Tracy Rocker. They're both straightforward guys who provide little sheen with their opinions. That provides a useful change of pace to the unabashed optimism found with Taylor and offensive line coach Jeff Grimes. Promoting itself with an array of different personalities likely is playing a role in Auburn's recruiting renaissance.
Thigpen's hiring intrigued me. He is a '93 UNC grad. He was a successful and popular player there. He coached there for several years in two different stints. Why would he leave that and come to Auburn?
He hasn't fully addressed this on the record, but Thigpen has said Brown gave Chizik a sterling recommendation. Thigpen probably felt maxed out at UNC. Chizik agreed to let Thigpen coach a different position, provided a modest raise and will teach the neophyte -- Thigpen has only nine seasons of major-college experience -- another defensive approach.
Thigpen and Chizik have a lot in common. They're classically trained defensive guys. They're careful with their words. They're calm people who rarely show raw emotion. If Thigpen indeed was searching for another source of inspiration, following Brown's suggestion could pay major dividends.

Shake 'N' Bake!
wonder bread
Great report, JayGT.
Thanks!!!
Zatarain's Jambalaya!

Ooh La La
Did someone get Monica?
Great report Jay. It sounds like a good mix of personalities on this staff...it seems like they balance each other out well.
Thigpen is underrated.
Emailers never ask about him. I don't understand why.
and I heyulped
Thanks for the insight JGT. Thigpen's coaching demeanor you portray is much more appealing to me that the classic screamer.
Tweets are sweet.
because he's Cerebro. We don't ask you about him because we already know. He transmits information to Auburn fans like that X-men dude.
X-cellent report, JGT. Merci beaucoup.
Aerona-Out! g'nite.
Jay G ...
Last one in tends to be viewed as the "runt," fairly or unfairly.
Since he's splitting the DBs, it looks like he has less responsibility to the naked eye.
On the defensive side, Roof is the boss, and Rocker is the former hero. Plus, the head coach is a defensive coach by training. So Lolley and Thigpen get less attention.
The offensive guys are stars -- at least Gus, Trooper and Luper are. You've said several times that Grimes is dynamic. So Boulware is the runt on the offensive side.
I extemely enjoyed the comment he made that went "If you go out there and knock somebody out..." I have visions of Carlos Cheetum (sp??) roaming in the secondary looking to decapatate someone.
I have visions of Junior Rosegreen tattooing Reggie Bown.
Reggie Brown, to be precise.
gnight and be safe Dr. Anaut
Monnie,
Was that you on the Shake N Bake commercial?
I thought I recognized the West Brewton accent.
Cowboy ...
Carlo Cheattom ... greatest hit EVAH ... Reggie Cobb still looking for his teeth.
What Junior Rosegreen did to Reggie Brown = 70 percent of what Carlo did to Reggie on a screen pass.
I thought Carlo was going to leave entry and exit wounds on the poor boy.
nice read.
"Word Up!"
That Brother Jet, as they say, was before my time.
Aubie - before I answer I need to figure out just how old that commercial is...
You bet...I was can still remember seeing that and wondering how pissed Cobb had to be at the QB or coach for calling that play.
Kind of like Stacey Danley was toasted for us later on.
Nice article JGT. I like this dude and his attitude.
As I recall, the ObKnoxvillians had the ball around their 20 or 25 in front of the Auburn student section.
I remember seeing the play develop, and you this audible "ooooooo" from stands, stunned silence just after the hit, then an explosion of noise.
Good to have you back Jay G!
You know I thought the year before last Savage had a real headhunter mentality so maybe CThigpen can get him on some highlight reel before the year is out.
Savage would have to move back to safety first.
I want to pose a recruiting questions for any that feel liek responding:
Rivals ranks teams by a total score they have given players. If UAT signs 30 players and thye have an average rating of 3.5 and SoCal signs 20 with an average rating of 3.8, how can they say UAT has the best recruiting class? (I know they are run by bammers) Further, what if Ole Miss had a higher point total then UAT did for 2008 recruiting, would eberyone feel they had the better class even though they signed 37 players? I would ask this if AU was in the top group also. It just doesn't pass the smell test to me.
This is off topic, but please be praying for Coach Richard Quick and his family. According to his wife's blog they have taken him home to Austin, where they do not expect he will live much longer. He is not eating and is only semi-conscious.
Sad news re: Coach Quick. I wish his family nothing but the best.
Recruiting rankings and sites are a revenue driver for companies geared at the fanatic fan base. Case in point is this senior class that Auburn has was ranked 9th nationally. How would you rank them today.....what's left of them anyway. Lee Tillery headliner. Bart Eddins 5* DT.
Just saying.....
Cincy...Requesting prayers for members of the AU family = nevah off topic
Jay G
got some hospital pics up for you on facebook
Hoopie would be correct.
jet...
Here's the link on the Carlo Cheattom lick. It's impressive.
(Have patience, it takes a minute to load.)
Ehyou,
Thank you, my brother. I will view it when I get home this evening.
roshard gilyard knocked some wyoming's players head off in the first game of 2000 I think
1988 doesn't sound like a long time, but it sure looks like a long time ago.
Well, Aubie I don't remember the last time I wasn't able to find something online. However, I can't find a date for THAT "It's Shake and Bake and I helped!" commercial.
Odd.
I will say this. I don't THINK my West Brewton accent is quite that bayud.
that happened in one of our pick up games. the hitter had the breath knocked out of himself; the hittee got up pretty quick which was absolutely amazing. you could hear the organ displacement all the way across the field.
ehyou,
Great video.
1988 really looks like a long time ago when you see the UT trainer wearing polyester short-shorts coaching pants.
Say a silent prayer that those NEVAH come back in style!
I believe there is a Tracy Rocker appearance in that video.
WTC ...
Not surprisingly, I view the recruiting services with skepticism.
Rankings attempt to objectify the subjective, but leave out an important component -- need.
The fall of 1988 ... ahhhh.
The fall before I got married.
Just kidding, Mrs. Jet. You know I love ya.
I was in the student section for that game. I hope I wasn't wearing anything similar to those coaching shorts.
Btw, on another topic, Six Flags was covered up with Bammers on Saturday. One of them specifically targeted me and my AU hat with the water cannons while I was riding Thunder River. Fortunately, I was already drenched. I wish the tables had been turned. Most of the Bammers appeared to need baths.
Anyone here know anyone connected with Central Alabama Christian Builders?
scott choc- you found any good new beers in the 'ham?
Cincy, feel free to share that link. I'm sure a lot of people are interested.
I loved Rosegreen's hit on Brown. My wife and I were at the game. Even the crowd whenced at that one. It hurt all the way into the upper deck.
As for Thigpen, he has been the invisible man of the coaching staff so far and that is not necessarily a bad thing.
I'll get it:
Richard Quick updates
Harrison, I haven't made an expedition yet, but my understanding is that Vulcan Beverage here in B'ham had already stocked up (or pre-ordered) in anticipation of the gourmet beer bill passing. I am actually going to check it out this week, as I am headed for the beach next week and would like to take some good stuff with me.
yes they did and J.Clyde has them too. Nowhere in Auburn has any yet
Thanks for posting the link, Jay. Sorry, I was getting dinner in the oven.
Mmmmmm dinner
What's for dinner, CincyT?
Herbed chicken breasts with brown rice, onions, broccoli, carrots, snow peas - cooked together in my dutch oven. And homemade biscuits.
Okay, let's all load up and head to cincy's house.
AU supposedly getting a new commitment in the next hour or so.
Come on, I'll throw in some extra biscuits.
Scott C, I was just wondering about the commit. Everyone is assuming it is us, so I want to hear it.
5:30 CDT at the gym at Charles Henderson High.
something tellsme the things i cook inmy dutch oven are waayy different than cincy's
D & B are talking to Brett Eddins right now. I think he's going to be at the Montgomery event tomorrow night with CGC.
Undercover has an article on Tate which says he isn't slow, a 4.4/40. It also mentions he had nagging injuries after the Vandy game. I find it interesting because many think of him as slow and early on I did too. As a freshman he seemed a bit slow but as the season went on, he seemed to get more comfortable and seemed to react a bit. I am betting he will look much better this season.
Harrison,
Want to share your recipes?
Cincy, Since i am completely immature, I was referring to the slang term where you pull the covers over your wife's head and pass gas. That is also a dutch oven.
Although I do cook a lot for a youngish male
ooooohhhh, I like my recipes better :)
One thing that I find interesting is our perceived lack of talent on offense. If you go through the roster, you can spot a crap load of offensive players that were 4 stars or better. We have the talent to be successful offensively.
good choice
I am well versed in both versions of the "dutch oven".
My wife prefers the Cincy version, while I am a Harrison man.
Mrs THT wants the recipe!!!
(cincy's, not harrison's)
I think my husband knows that the guy's version of "dutch oven' would eliminate anything else hot happening in our bed
don't knock it til you try it
Harrison - Do you have to be bitten by a bear to know you won't like it?
exactly, Monica!
ok, all of you who are always quoting lines from movies. Where did this come from. "I called her up, she said something about me not paying attention to her. I don't know, I wasn't listening." Or something like that.
i don't like bee stings or when my wife's cat bites me. So i extrapolate that out to a bear being way worse.
cincy i think it's from dumb and dumber
thanks, Harrison, never saw the movie, but hear the quote all the time
I'm sure this has been talked about on here, but I don't have the time or patience to look for it.
I just saw a report on the local news about ESPN's 50 States in 50 Days. According to Mike Rader (a local sports director), it was heavily Tide biased. All the good things that Auburn has done over the years and they had to talk about the DA CTF and the comments he made recently. Thanks, Josh Moon!
cincy- it is probably my all time fave comedy. easily top-3. you should watch it. warning though: it is totally immature and stupid
whats up yall? any word on White?
White to AU
Commit!
WARRRR EAGLE!!! and Welcome Mr. Jawara White!!!
sweet. thanks yall.
that same logic is why Cincy can, indeed, knock it without trying it
ya goober
and i do believe i will be having a talk with mrs. harrison
This comment has been removed by the author.
Welcome and War Eagle, Mr. White
What are you guys gonna talk about?
It was Mr. White, with the interception and into the endzone. Game Over.
I'm going to give her some old woman wisdom. Don't you worry your pretty little head about it.
Welcome to AUburn Mr. White....
Next up on the Clock Mr. Owens....paging Mr. Owens....
Wow, seems like there is another in state recruit that Saban didn't want. Well, we will take you in Mr. White.
2nd straight instate commit with a bama offer! The tide is turning yet again! WDE
Just FYI Lache Seastrunk was a no-show at the Texas camp this past weekend. Nor did he want to give an interview to the Texas rival site. :)
If he's going to commit why not just commit? I don't see what we gain by having him in the pocket?
We gain what we had with Richardson and White, a way to counteract an Alabama commitment and get out name in the paper.
Sean I use to think like that too until this season. I understand the importance of silent commits now. They can create momentum, sustain it, or change the public conversation for the positive.
I guess there must be a method to the madness if everyone does it.
Yea, it is a tit for tat thing where each school wants their name to be in the headlines.
amen Bigcat
OK, what is tat and where can I get some?
biting my tongue
Screw the tat, give me the ___...
Glad you caught that Mon.
I was looking to get some tat and then going to see who wanted to trade because it sounds like Steve knows soomeone that trades tat.
Oh boy, I to think I have started something:)
Mr. WTC I WILL prove that I do have filters and know how to use them. biting
my
tongue
So, I'm sure everyone has seen this already, but just in case here it is.
"BrianMcLaughlin | Friday, June 05, 2009, 11:25 am
Bleedin, Lache called me about 2-3 weeks ago (while I was in the grocery store, doesn't that always happen?) when I was working on some updates on our SN100. He asked me how he could get ahold of Seantrel Henderson, the best lineman in the country, so he could get Seantrel to come to Auburn.
Lache's a great, great kid, really is, but he's just young. Marcus Lattimore, on the other hand, sounds like an NFL Vet already, and he has both Auburn AND Alabama on his list. But he did like Auburn a lot.
Lache's probably already a silent commitment."
This is from Brian at the Sporting News.
Lache has made it clear he wants to commit at the Army All-America Game, which is cool.
What up Hotties?!
Jay-Great job on the coach profile. Seems like there is a nice blend of personalities on this staff. This was mentioned when these guys were first hired but I really like how young these guys are. I think I read that the average age of this staff is something like 43 years old. I think it brings a nice energy to AU.
Glad to hear about Mr.White. War Eagle to him and best of luck.
I don't know if it's been mentioned here but what are y'alls feelings on Lestruke calling and apologizing to Saban for his comments. I am kinda mixed on it personally. I mean it was a class thing to do but I don't think it was necessary. It's not like he dogged him or anything.
I think I screwed up dudes name but my bad..y'all know who I'm talking about..
Lestruke?
I haven't seen a name botched that good since Pat Dye kept calling our snapper "Brainsworth."
Thanks Jet. I'm not drinking tonight so my mind doesn't function as well..go figure...
Wartiger - it's Lache Seastrunk
pronounced La-shay
or if you're Monica Luh-shay
salacious
lascivious
thanks mon..I just looked it up..new thread btw
boy I really did butcher that..funny..
what if I like the old thread?
then you just stay right here and be happy and beautiful then...
This story may help explain Thigpen's decision on coming to Auburn.

Thanks for these coaching profiles. I'm really enjoying them.
