Gene Chizik speaks, 6/9

Hey everyone. Your Head Coach took some time before the big Montgomery Auburn Club shindig tonight to speak with a few beat hacks about a variety of issues.

Here is a glace at the topics du jour.

Is Tyrik Rollison going to qualify? (submitted by Jet)
"Right now, we feel really good where everybody is, where Tyrik is. Until they get there, we're not going to make any statements about it. We feel really good on all those spots."

Some have said you take a cavalier approach toward recruiting rules and that you push the envelope. Is that true?
"I'm not at liberty to talk about recruiting or things of that nature. (NOTE: He's talking about possible secondary violations.) We're trying to recruit and do things the right way. We do things a little bit outside the box, if you will. That's what we're trying to do. We'll continue to do that. As far as being cavalier, I don't see that at all. We're just trying to do our job and work hard."

Do you feel like a renegade?

"Absolutely not. That's not who we are."

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive asked that coaches stop with the name-calling. Did his plea sink in across the league?
"Everybody is an individual. I know that it was a heart-felt talk and I respected very much what the commissioner said. I can't speak for everyone else; I can only speak for me."

Franklin said there was a lot of paranoia among the staff last season? Is that happening now?

"Everything at Auburn right now is great. What happened in the past or what people say -- I have no control over that. I had no control over it. This is a whole new deal. I don't know what that meant. I've got bigger fish to fry right now at Auburn. I don't pay attention to all that outside stuff."

It seems like head coaches have become rock stars in the recruiting world by taking a more prominent role. Is that accurate?

"I've always thought the head coaches are the central part of the recruiting process. The people who recruit well -- you can usually point to their head coach. That's been throughout time. I haven't noticed that it's swinging in that direction now. I feel like it's been that way for a long time."

Why has recruiting become such a big deal lately?
"It's the open exposure with the internet, the exposure with all the publications. It's the nature of technology. There are no secrets out there anymore. There's information everywhere. That obviously opens things up and there's a lot of attention."

Years ago, you'd hear coaches say they could 'sneak a recruit by'. Can you still do that?
"Not with you guys (around). I just think there are very few secrets these days. There's so much communication between recruits and other recruits, recruits and all the different publications out there. It would be tough."

Nicely done.

Thanks for the comments, Jay

Coach Chizik certainly has the "talk without saying anything" act down

Now that we have lost the chance, I have some questions:

Will Coach Chizik be doing the Auburn Football Review program?

If so, why?

He. reveals. nothing.

Nice job Jay.

CGC understands the "information age". Because he isn't flashy, he may take a little longer to get us on track...or.....because he doesn't really take any wrong steps...he may gain momentum faster than many anticipate.

I have another interview scheduled with Chizik later this week. Question suggestions aren't wasted.

Did he say who ws going to win the Stanley Cup? As if there's any doubt.

Please ask Coach Chizik if he will be purchasing the new iPhone 3GS, the Palm Pre', or the Blackberry Storm?

Thanks,

I like Chizik, but i believe seeing Coach Luper and Coach Taylor would be more entertaining at this point.

Jay,
love the interview...Seriously I really like CGC, I don't know how his first year will work out but one more win than last year will be a step in the right direction.....

Here's my question:

Some one once said "If I, would I, could I, should I... it doesn't really matter the results are still the same.... what motto do you aspire to and one word that describes your drive"

7:49 PM
Blogger wartiger said...

More quality work Jay..Thanks very much..I'll try to think of a question but like most have said..he talks without really saying anything so it's just gonna be some general answer. Not that I'm complaining..it's all good!! He seems to be just doing his job and not worrying about what the media or the fans think about him...what was it he said about not being affected with what the outside world thinks of him..something like that..

I kind of like a head coach that is careful with his words. Let the assistants do the more controversial stuff.

I use to have a boss that I worked very well with. If we thought someone was an idiot and it wasn't politically correct for him to say so, I would. He would then apologize for me and say he would see that it didn't happen again. It worked out very well.

7:54 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve, did you volunteer to say those things for him or did it just flow naturally :).

7:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Well, initially I volunteered, but later it was kind of a mutual agreement:)

8:05 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

My favorite comment in a meeting by far was when one of my co-workers responded to a request from my boss. He said "It's stupid, but I will do it". Now, we all think it at times, but we don't usually have the guts to say it. We were phasing that boss out of the project anyway.

One way to avoid coachspeak is ask personal opinions that allow the coach a chance to open up without scrutiny.

"What is it about CFB that drives you to do this for a living?

oops...I forgot...the standard answer is "the kids".

I ran across an interesting take one the Franklin Experience at Plainsmen Parking Lot for anyone who is interested. I do consider this more of a fair assessment of the Experience. He does point out some contradictory things that Franklin said.

I have never heard Gene Chizik say anything! Vanilla would be a taste sensation for him. With that said, I would much rather have Chizik than Kiffin.

At least we don't know whether our coach is an idiot or not, Kiffin has proven that he is.

9:12 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

well, yes I watched. and it was intense.

9:39 PM

Hoopie - Yes, I'm going to use you like the others.

"allow a coach to open up without scrutiny" - no such thing

I like Coach Chiz. It's perfectly fine with me if he remains perfectly silent. That whole open your mouth and prove everybody right thing don't cha know. Anyway, I'd like for him to do his talking on the field and just win.

9:42 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, I like how Chizik holds his cards close to the vest myself. The Tennesse/Florida game will be interesting this year. Meyer is a just do don't talk kind of guy. My guess is he will give Kiffin a lesson in humility.

He verbally committed to Auburn at age 4. He did have a brief flirtation with Washington and Lee during the fall of his junior year, and also applied to Tulane, but reaffirmed his commitment after the 2007 game over the Infidels.

He walks in with a level of UAT hate that will put him at the top of the freshman class.

I would love to hear one of his sermons sometime. He has learned from one of the best!

Attending AU affords the opportunity for unimpeded display of Bammer hate.

Turboprop should be able to realize and fully hone his Bammer hate potential during the next 4 years. Jet should be, and is proud.

Regrettably, I arrived my first year at AU without proper Bammer hate in my heart and squandered an opportunity. It's like lost sleep...you can never get it back.

7:41 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Hoopie, I wasted 4 years of Bama hate. I didn't really care about them as they hadn't been relevant to my football world. While I was at Auburn we beat them like a drum and continued to do so. It's only in the last 7 months that I truly have begun to understand.

Even though I grew up in a household that didn't care about football or sports in general (unless it was me and my games), I was still able to formulate my UAT hatred at an early age. Growing up in the gump and Alabama in general, you simply must pick a side. I made my pick and have never wavered.

Hate, hate, hate...

A brief report on the Chillin with the Chiz event last night:

Since JGT did the stuff of substance and posted a very nice video, I will do the orange carpet report.

Folks, it looks like the colors for fall are Auburn orange and blue.

The Chiz looked tan and fit, and he looks good in an orange shirt.

Didn't see JGT; there were a lot of people there. I did see several political folks and a prominent trial lawyer having a conversation before the meeting started--no doubt about Auburn football.

I like Coach C more and more, and it doesn't bother me at all that he is measured with his words. However, I grew up around people whose philosophy was to say it on the field.
