Chizik adds an eighth commitment

This may be older news to some of you, but Auburn has landed another commitment to its 2010 recruiting class. This happened last night.

Georgia CB Jonathan Mincy, according to our friends at AuburnSports.com, AuburnUndercover.com and ITAT, has promised to sign with the Tigers in February.

Scout.com and Rivals.com both rate him as a 3-star prospect. They both consider him one of the top 10 cornerbacks available in the Southeast.

Mincy has scholarship offers from ... a whole wad of major programs.

Here's a look at the players Auburn has committed so far:
OL Shon Coleman, Olive Branch, Miss.
LB Jake Holland, Pelham
ATH Shaun Kitchens, Atlanta, Ga.
K Cody Parkey, Jupiter, Fla.
WR Jeremy Richardson, Springville
LB Jawara White, Troy
LB Jessel Curry, Buford, Ga.
CB Jonathan Mincy, Decatur, Ga.

Cincy,
If I were you, I would get the EXL w/out Nav and go buy your own 3rd party Nav system and have it installed. You'll come out better price-wise and end up with a better system.

Once you get a good low offer, play the dealers off each other. They all say they'll beat your best offer... See how much they mean it.
You can also get better initial price quotes dealing with their internet sales person.

Why would he give voice to another talk show host? Does PF feel the same way? Is he using a surrogate to make his case regarding Saban.

Nope. No good chicken salad will come of this.

I don't see much of a reason to get all excited about Tyrik. He is another QB with potential. We have around 3 4 star QBs that can't get it done. Tyrik is just another wait and see in my book. There is reason to think Moseley has just as good of chance at being the man.

Yeah. Tyrik Rollison is Kodi Burns, as far as I'm concerned, until he shows some decent footwork, the ability to get the football to a receiver, and a general knowledge of the QB position.

And Chad Scott is an Auburn grad.

11:21 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Exactly Jay. And many last season thought Kodi Burns was our savior, while he turned out to be the sign of the end times. Fans always believe that the backup QB is better.

11:23 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

You are right Jay, but from I've seen from Auburn QB's lately, the uknown cannot be any worse, and just having the guy competing makes it interesting and news worthy to most Auburn Fans that I know.

11:24 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Eddie,

I am with you. It's hard for me to believe that Tyrik is much worse than what we saw last year. I hope that the light switch comes on for Kodi, or somehow Neil turns into the Man of Steel, or Chris' arm turns into a cannon. But who knows?

Schematically, we should be better, because we will have a cohorent philosophy with buy-in from all parties.

I can see where Tyrik gets a chance to get some PT, rather than a one-way ticket to Redshirtville. Hopefully, it doesn't come to that. But I suspect it will.

11:31 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I think he's as interesting and newsworthy as the other signees.

My prediction: Six guys from this class play. Rollison will not be one of them.

11:36 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I had actually hoped that Trotter would be there. He was the biggest unknown. In terms of Caudle, I think Borges and Franklin saw problems with him.

Todd with a decent arm seems to be our best choice this season, but only if his arm isn't going to wear out after a few games. He made good decisions and seems to be a smart QB.

Burns also should still have a place in this offense. He is great as a change up, much the way Franklin used him against Clemson.

Todd will likely end up being the starter with Kodi coming off the bench unless Caudle shocks me.

11:36 AM
Blogger wtc said...

I think OL that will commit shortly is the teammate of Richardson. HUghes is the last name I believe.

(But I don't follow recruiting)

11:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

If you see Moseley or Rollison play this season, it will likely mean they picture them becoming the starter later in the season. It would be a good indication of Malzahn's opinion of Burns and Caudle.

11:40 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I agree with Jay. Tyrik may pan out to be a great AU QB, but it won't happen this year.

Funny thing is Texas, Texas Tech, and OU all had three super QBs and they were all rated 3 stars coming out of high school. Kodi and Neil were both fours (I think). It seems like we could get something out of them...I predict Malzahn will figure out how to make one of them play within themselves and have a solid season.

11:44 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm still waiting on Allen Tillman to take his 1st snap at QB...same with Kelcy Luke.

11:46 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Personally, I am going to be worried no matter who ends up being the starter. I think it will be Todd, but that is assuming a lot about his arm and I don't want a QB that won't be around for the entire season.

Some have tried to make the case that Malzahn didn't name a starter in the spring because he wanted to keep the competition going. I don't believe this. They spent a lot of the spring giving Trotter a shot, which I think is another indicator that he isn't happy with Burns or Caudle.

11:53 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

there's just so much that goes into being a good QB these days, you just never know until they get 2-3 years into it. it took D.Craig & J. Campbell years until they reached their potential. who knows.

11:53 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Craig was brought along the right way. He was used as a situational QB for two years behind Nix to groom him for the starting job.

We never really had a solid back up plan under Tub, the back up never got a ton of reps if the starter was healthy.

When Leard, Campbell and Cox all graduated we started 2001, 2005 & 2008 with people who had almost never seen the field the year before.

11:57 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Also, I don't buy into the it takes 2 years for a QB to be ready.

Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Matt Leinart and many others have started off right away without any problems.

The key is getting the right QB in the right situation. The problem is we haven't developed QB's.

12:08 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I will agree to disagree on Rollison. I bet he will play. The QB situation here looks much like the Arkansas QB situation when Malzahn came in up there. I could be dead wrong, but I bet Tyrik will take some snaps at some point this year.

12:08 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, you hit on it. Campbell was pretty much thrown to the wolves. Playing him early caused a lot of issues with his confidence. I would really like to see us bring a backup QB along. It wouldn't bother me at all to see one of the incoming recruits as the backup and get in for a series here or there. I just don't like to see QBs go from bench warmer to starter with little previous experience.

12:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And Eddie, I see no reason to choose Tyrik over Moseley. Either is an option.

12:12 PM

12:13 PM

I like Moseley as a long term kind of guy. He needs to put some weight on and get some reps against higher competition but this kid has a great shot 3 years down the road.

12:13 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

In recent years we never played the back up (Cobb in 2000, Cox in 2004, Sullivan in 2005, Field in 2006, Burns in 2007) or had a goofy platoon that hurt both QB's (Campbell/Cobb in 01 & 02 and Burns/Todd last year).

12:14 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I'm talking about everytime the QB situation comes up you are convinced Chris Todd will be the guy, what up with that?

12:14 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

i agree with you RK on getting QB's in the right situation. however, the QB's you mentioned are playing for the top 4 programs in the country. they've got a lot of help around them.

i guess i'm just saying not to count out Kodi or Caudle or even Todd. last year was just so horrible with the CTF experiment. that wasn't a good situation for anybody. i'm sure Tebow could've handled his own but i think it's fair to say he would be an exception, not the rule.

12:15 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

As freshman, Tebow was backup to Leak, and played in certain situations.

Bradford redshirted his freshman year. He started his 2nd yr in college as a redshirt freshman.

Leinhart was in college two years before he started.

I don't know about Colt McCoy.

12:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We sort of played Burns his freshman year. That is about as close to bringing along a QB that we have done, but it was basically a train wreck because of throwing him under the bus at MSU. MSU revealed how teams adjust to Burn's running. When Burns played most of the game, I thought we were going to lose. MSU shut him down in the second half.

12:17 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If we want to be an elite program, then we need to have situations in place for someone to come in and be effective quickly.

There are other examples of QB's coming in and being effective right away that aren't at Florida, Texas or USC.

However we almost never have had that situation in our program's history.

12:19 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sean, I am convinced Todd will be the guy. I am not sure what has to be up with that. He has shown to be the best QB we have at the moment. I haven't been thinking he would be the guy until I saw an article on him saying his arm is better than it was anytime last season.

You saw the disaster that was Kodi Burns and how our season fell apart when he was the starter. What other option are you seeing?

12:19 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

They were all ready to play when they took the field.

I thought the way Meyer played Tebow with Leak as the starter was perfect. Fans were whining for Tebow to be the starter, but Meyer knew he wasn't ready. I even listened to Meyer say that if Tebow wasn't content being the backup, he wouldn't play at all. Meyer brought Tebow along the right way.

12:21 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Our QB's are always learning on the job, other schools QB's seem to be ready when they hit the field (whether that is after a redshirt year or not, they were prepared when it was their time).

12:24 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well Steve, you might be right. But I'm giving Kodi the benefit of the doubt here. He was told he was no good, got buried, got played, changed the offense, yada yada. I'd like to see a QB excel in that situation. I haven't written Neil off, he made some good plays in the A-Day game, which I know, I am taking with a grain of salt. Todd hasn't thrown a legit pass since what, October of last year. I'll believe he's the starter when he's under center for La Tech.

12:25 PM

Georgia did the same thing with another QB, I think it was Shockley. He was the backup for David...I can't remember the last name.

12:26 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I think our QB's learning on the job was a function of Tuberville not really knowing what he wanted out of an offense or how to develop offensive talent and his position coaches weren't much better. Al Borges had Cox ready to go and then we fired him. The rest of the offensive staff didn't have much of a rep for developing a great passing game.

12:26 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Pat Sullivan = last AU true freshman QB ready to play. Unfortunately, Fr weren't eligible.

12:28 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

"Borges had Cox ready to go"

Look back at the 1st couple of games in 2005, he wasn't as ready to go as we remember. He ended up putting up good numbers in 2005, but he did struggle early on.

However, Tub's staff struggled with QB and WR development.

12:29 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Not having a real QB coach over the last few years have hurt the most. The last real QB coach Auburn had was Petrino and he made huge strides with Jason Campbell. I think Gus Malzahn is a good QB coach. I believe they truly left the spring completely undecided. Do I expect on the current rosters guys to start, yes, but I wouldn't rule out a True Freshman playing also.

12:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

In terms of Caudle, I am going by what Borges and Franklin did with him. Also, with Burns, Franklin's comments make me think CTT is the only reason he was playing him.

Burns has a significant amount of experience and still shows the same decision making problems. There were a couple of games last season where I thought he was beginning to get it (late against Arkansas and Ole Miss), but he has remained inconsistent.

The other indicatos I see is how long Malzahn was willing to give Trotter a shot. I believe Malzahn sees the issues with Burns and Caudle, just like Borgess and Franklin did.

Don't get me wrong. I think Todd could be a big mistake if his arm falls apart again. I just saw a lot of good decision making from him last season. I saw a QB that knew what to do, but at times didn't have the arm to do it.

Also, I think they did the right thing switching from Todd to Burns. I don't think they had a choice. Todd's arm was done. That was very evident.

Then it dropped off after that.

Part of my opinion is rooted in my belief is that redshirt will become more and more a thing of the past.

RK, I agree with you on Cox Borges also said he was asking Brandon to do too much. After the offense went back to more of a run first approach, we did very well in 2005. I was speaking more of he wasn't a complete train wreck and ruin a season. So ready being relative to 2001, 2008.

The reason he wasn't as highly touted is becuase of his academic uncertainty so the big wigs didn't really pursue him hard.

Sorry, Coach O possessed me for a moment.

I hope we can redshirt him. It means somebody turned out OK.

The great 97-99 backfield of Cencade Pennington, Demontray Carter, Rusty Williams, Markeith Cooper, Tellie Embry, Michael Burks, Roman Nelson, Clifton Robinson & I'm sure others that I have forgotten was a hit below the belt.

The only ones I left out were the two that stood out in that group, in 97 we had Fred Beasley & in 98 & 99 we had Heath Evans.

However both were fullbacks that they asked to be tailbacks.

We would have been begging to have a Ben Tate type RB in those days.

'08 backfield not much better from a production point of view

2:18 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

If I'm remembering correctly, Dameyune Craig almost beat UT single-handedly in the '97 SECCG. Just a tiny bit of assistance from that fabulous backfield probably would have won it for AU.

2:19 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

in both instances it may have been more a reflection of the coaching than the talent in the backfield.

2:19 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If you would have put Tate, Fannin & Lester on the 98 team we would have been much better than 3-8...on the 99 team we probably would have won 8 or 9 games. We would have won 7 anyway if Duval could have kicked a FG against the two Miss schools.

Actually I think from a yardage production nothing can be worse than the 97-99 Auburn running game. I think two years we averaged in the 70's per game and one we dropped to 68 yards rushing per game.

2:21 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We rushed for negative yardage in the 1997 SEC title game.

THT,

The talent in the late 90's backfield was far far worse than the 2008 backfield. I'd say our RB's from 97-99 averaged 5'8" 180.

Although a great passing attack can be very sexy, I would still prefer to just run over people...again, and again.

The 04-05 offense (05 once Irons was moved to the starting RB role) was the best I've ever seen at Auburn.

If we can get that kind of productivity back and keep our D consistent, then I'll be a happy camper.

2:30 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

In 04 and 05 we had great balance, pretty much 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing per game and over 30 points per game.

I don't recall any other Auburn offenses being that consistent in both aspects of the game except for maybe 93-94.

Some people have this fire in their belly, that burns too strong. Some athletes are on a different level, and it's a state of mind, more so than just physical talent.

That winning attitude is what Auburn needs, the swagger of a winner, of a champion. Tyrik has that.

I guess I offended JGT with my insightful coverage of tyrik's personality :-P. My apologies.

I'll be going to see the hangover tonight and hanging around to see the transformers at midnight. I go to most of these movies with no expectations except that it should be visually stunning, which is my favorite part. If it's got any story at all Transformers 2 should be good. I am looking forward BIGTIME to The Hobbit coming out and a couple remakes, Robocop being the main one, Conan being another.

From what i've seen of TR he seems to be more assertive than most qb's we've had in the past. That is watching him against HS players, and not SEC speed, which will take him some getting used to. I am pulling for him but don't expect to see him next year, oh and he has a flippin mohawk, i like that.

The 1st Transformers was so "visually stunning" that I never really knew who was fighting who because they didn't do enough to disginguish who was who in robot form as they were fighting.

So at the end of the movie I was visually stunned.

Rivals and AU undercover are both reporting that TR has enrolled. The summer time on campus will help him get acclimated to life away from mama and to workout with the team and get a feel for what he is in for.

If I remember correctly, Kodi enrolled for summer session also.

PMarshall writes that he has seen 5 coaching changes at AU and this is the most excited he has seen players about a change. He says that they all seem to have bought into CGC and staff.

4:36 PM

Reggie Taylor was not a surprise. Schools from GA were not very keen on him as he was considered an academic risk. But the guy has a lot of potential, and it would be awesome if he does join Auburn after his Juco.

Some useless info on LaVoyd James: He broke his ankle the second game of his senior season (he was the holder for the extra point kick, and someone fell on his ankle) He has made a great recovery and is FAST..like .. track n field fast. His non-qualification is a surprise.
