Auburn lands another commitment
DL Kenneth Carter of Greenville High has made a verbal commitment to play tackle football at Auburn beginning in 2010.
We know this because our friends at AuburnSports.com, AuburnUndercover.com and ITAT say so.
Carter stands 6-foot-5 and weighs approximately 270 pounds. He was a late bloomer in a sense -- ie wasn't a game-changing element until 2008 -- and only recently began receiving offers from big schools. We know Ole Miss, Kentucky and Southern Miss are highly interested.
ITAT believes Alabama and Clemson, among others, have offered scholarships.
Both Scout.com and Rivals.com rate Carter as a three-star prospect (out of five).
Here's a look at Auburn's array of commitments:
OL Shon Coleman, Olive Branch, Miss.
LB Jake Holland, Pelham HS
ATH Shaun Kitchens, Atlanta, Ga.
K Cody Parkey, Jupiter, Fla.
WR Jeremy Richardson, Springville HS
LB Jawara White, Troy
LB Jessel Curry, Buford, Ga.
CB Jonathan Mincy, Decatur, Ga.
DE Joel Bonomolo, Fullerton, Calif. (juco)
S Demetruce McNeal, College Park, Ga.
DB D.J. Howard, Lincoln HS
WR Antonio Goodwin, Atlanta, Ga.
OL Chad Slade, Moody HS

AU as Underdog? Tired of it.
New page all by myself (sort of)
I don't mind it this year, but afterward I do not want to be underdogs.
Ooooh, that smell!
Can't you smell that smell?
Jet- I'm out a here. Gotta run 6 miles at 6:00am.
WTC ... you're on your own ... later.
I still think we're a 7-5 or 8-4 team. I think there's a big possibility that we'll be the same the year after. I think the real test is the 2011 season. I hope we give CGC the chance to get there.
I don't consider myself a whiner, just trying to be realistic about the current state of Auburn compared to other SEC teams. I hope to be proven wrong, maybe AU will steamroll teams this year.
Thanks WTC - you sweet talker. By the way, it took me a while to figure out your new avatar...
T-minus 38 days til kickoff!!! Practice starts in 1 week!!!
HAPPY ED DYAS DAY!!!
The following is shamelessly lifted from the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame web site. I'm sure I couldn't have said it any better.
ED DYAS
Auburn University
Fullback, 1958-60
A legend in the SEC on both sides of the ball, Ed Dyas led Auburn in rushing and scoring, was named the SEC's Most Outstanding Back and First-Team All- Conference in 1960.
Dyas played fullback, linebacker and handled all kicking duties during his four years at Auburn. Dyas started at fullback for Auburn's 1958 undefeated team. A First Team All-America selection in 1960 at fullback, Dyas [also] set an NCAA record for field goals in a season with 13. Dyas was also selected an NFF National Scholar-Athlete. He was a Phi Kappa Phi All-America team member, a three-time Academic All Conference pick, received the Bill Streit Award for highest senior GPA and won the Cliff Hare Award, the highest honor an Auburn athlete can receive for academic, athletic and leadership achievement. Dyas received his Bachelor of Science in pre-med and earned his master's from Tulane.
Currently an orthopedic surgeon in Mobile, Ala., he has served on the committee, board and staff of the Mobile Infirmary Hospital for 19 years and the Providence Hospital Foundation Board for six years. He is head of physicians for the Senior Bowl and has served on the Senior Bowl Committee for 26 years.
Dyas is [in the] Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame.
Honorable mentions anyone? Ed Dubose played one year in the 70s; I think he was #38. Collis Campbell in the mid '80s wore #38.
WARRRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
Good morning, Hotties!!! Good choice, THT. I worked with Dr. Dyas in my previous life as a nurse in Mobile.
I agree, I'm tired of the underdog role.
We shouldn't accept being the underdog.
Good morning and Happy Hump Day, Hotties! I can't believe there's only 38 days left!
Good Morning All. Check out my brother's post on Tebow-Gate 2009. I think you will enjoy it.
Vote-Gate 2009
don't forget the famous AU photo of Patrick Fain Dye 'trying to' chase down Ed Dyas. i think it was the 59 AU-UGA game. if not, it was the '58 game.
i love me some Ed Dyas. Happy #38 Day!
HOTTIES living in Alabama - It's time for some of you to STEP UP!!
Guvnah Riley needs you!
Just ran the elliptical to "Attitude, The Story of the 1993 Tigers". I had forgotten how exciting the Florida game was. And of course the Nix to Sanders pass for the TD in the bama game. I had forgotten he came in cold off the bench, 4th and 15. What a pass.
I know it's silly to compare teams, but I think there are a lot of similarities. Not saying we are going to go undefeated, but if these kids get some confidence I think we could be amazed at what they could do. Wishing and hoping and thinking and praying, planning and dreaming...
Dang kids 600+?!?!?
I'm not sure I see smiliarities in this years team and the 1993 team. However I hope that I'm wrong.
In 1993 we had Stan White who had had two horrible years in 1991 & 1992, but was still a 3 year returning starter and he was a leader. We don't have a leader at QB from what I can see, much less a guy who had survived 3 years in the SEC.
We had a secondary that was amazing, a returning RB in Bostic who was really good along with Stephen Davis who everyone knew would be good.
Also a big key was we had Frank Sanders and Thomas Bailey who made big plays in the passing game.
I just don't see offensively us having anyone who can step up like those guys on offense, but I'll gladly be wrong.
RK- I will agree with you, I don't see it. But I will also say, I didn't see it in 1993 or the type of season we had in 2004. I love being proved wrong, but I just see way too many issues to have that type of run and to compound things, other teams in those year were not nearly as good as the teams we will face this year. This is no down year in the SEC. It is going to be a brutal year in which we need to simply make progress and a bowl game would be the icing on the cake IMO.
Eddie, I had that same thought this morning. With the exception of MSU everyone in our division I think is going to be at least as good if not better than they were last year.I have a feeling that whole "SEC beating up one another" situation is going to be even more prevelant. Just too much good goin' around.
And I'm very curious about Tennessee. Just wondering if he's doing it all with smoke and mirrors or can Kiffiboy really get it done. He's got a good staff helpin him.
Wishing and hoping and thinking and praying, planning and dreaming...
Did you see these words? I'm not saying we're going to have a great year, but no one expected the year we had in 1993 or in 2004.
So I'll just keep wishing and hoping and thinking and praying, planning and dreaming...
It's a lot more fun than expecting the worst!
And remember Florida was ranked 4th in the nation when we beat them in 1993. The SEC wasn't all patsies then.
Cincy, many apologies but your HABOTN shirt just now made it to the post office. it made its way from my house to my office last week but it just now was put in transit. sorry, but you may have it by Saturday. :(
Cincy- I love the thought. Someone else posed that same question to me yesterday. The answer is that you truely don't know what to expect. A run like that is highly unlikely, but not impossible. Love that video by the way. Really a great showcase of a great year.
Mrtommy- I have UT much higher than most. I believe they will finish 2nd in the East and end up with around 10 wins. Call me crazy, but I do believe he is a very good OC and his dad an even better DC. They have a somewhat favorable schedule at Alabama and Florida being their toughest two games and Georgia / Auburn / Ole Miss being games at which I think they will be favored. They have to work out the QB situation, but I believe this going to be a very run oriented offense this year with Harvesty returning and super phenom Bryce Brown getting his touches as well. That's my take on UT.
The vengeful part of me hopes that petrino and Kiffin lose all their games. Not realistic, but it'd be funny as hell.
In 1993 Florida and Alabama were the only ranked teams we played all year long.
UGA wasn't very good, nor was LSU.
It was a completely different SEC.
It was just a lot of things lining up for us perfectly in 1993.
Both 1993 and 2004 you could see a lot of talent there, but they had underachieved the year before.
Yes we underachieved last year, but the talent level isn't at the level of those two teams and the SEC is 10x's better than it was in 1993 and probably 2 or 3x's better than it was just 5 years ago.
If Ed Dyas played and accomplished all of that in today's celebrity worship/information age.....he could be a superstar living on his name. Instead he is another accomplished Auburn Grad contributing to society. Thank you Ed Dyas.
I feel confident we will go undefeated this year.
I think if JGT isn't careful, or gets too busy with the HS stuff he has to do, we're looking at another 1000 count thread. Been a while.
Is that the Auburn or Bama Michael talking?
yup, by mid-season Todd's arm will be shot, Tyrik will be leading us, and Ben Tate will be running us towards 1,800 yards and an undefeated season. :)
Eddie...you tend to overestimate true freshman potential in the SEC.......conversely, Hoopie tends to underestimate it.
man, my orange and blue goggles are nearly as powerful as some of those crimson ones that i've seen around lately.
Hoopie- I may over-estimate it a little bit at times, namely one Tyrik Rollison :), but I truely believe Bryce Brown is that good. I hear his body fat is 0% and he looks great in pictures...wait a minute...where have I heard this conversation? Seriously though, Bryce Brown looks to be an immediate impact player sort of like AJ Greene and Julio Jones last year.
In recent history, has there been an SEC quarterback that has played a full season effectively without playing the previous season?
scottie b,
no problem, I'll love it when I get it.
mrtommy- Without playing at all the previous season or playing in limited capacity?
RK,
Please do not confuse me with facts. I like my orange and blue world. And if I get disappointed, there's always next year. :)
Now I am off on a mission to find a Nerf Vortex Mega Howler football for the beach. Who knew these could be so elusive?
good luck on your Nerf quest Cincy.
Last year Jevan Sneed played pretty well without having played the year before.
Brandon Cox had a good 2005 without playing more than a quarter of a game in 2004.
Rex Grossman had a great freshman year in 2000.
let's say in a limited capacity. But with that, I know Mr. Tebow did pretty good his sophomore year. So other than Teebs who we got?
QB's to do well without any prior playing experience:
Rex Grossman
Tee Martin
QB's to do well with limited playing time the previous season:
Matt Mauck
DJ Shockey
I'm sure there are more, but those come to mind the quickest.
Stan White didn't do too shabby as RS Frosh in 1990 from what i remember. well, until the Florida game anyways.
I don't know that Rex had a great 2000 season, evidently he was benched in the UGA game because of 3 interceptions he threw. Not sure the full stats for his initial season, but it sounds like he struggled some.
I just wondered if the QB position in the SEC is one of those that really takes a bit of experience to be truly effective. Or can a system allow for success ala the Baltimore Ravens and Trent Dilfer
oh oh here he comes
he's a thread killer
Mrtommy- Maybe you have forgotten, but he led the gators to thumping us twice that year and one when it really mattered in the SEC Championship game. He ended up taking the starting spot from Jessie Palmer that year I believe.
Grossman lead UF to a SEC title in 2000, threw 5 TD's in the 1st 5 drives in the game against us.
21 TD's and 7 interceptions as a true freshman.
Yeah I don't remember us EVER being beaten by Florida, or UA, or UGA, or anyone else :)
Remember when there was only one kind of Nerf football? Those were the days. I think I still have bruises from some of those pickup football games.

I stand corrected.
So let me ask you (since I'm somewhat concerned about our QB spot) which is more important, the new system (which wil be Kodi's and Chris' 3rd they've had to learn) or the experience that they have in the game. I just limit it to those two since they seem to be front runners.
It depends on the situation.
For the most part it's how well they understand/execute the new system.
However nothing beats experience when you are down and have the ball with 2 mins to go.
I go with the system and being able to understand it the best. As far as experience goes, we don't have a lot of experience either way at the QB spot. We have a couple of QB's that have started a few games each, not enough in that category to give it a big boost.
Let's hope we get some good system understanding going on. Some good blocking would be nice, too. No drops. Staying onside. etc.
Just found some info on Rex. I stand VERY corrected.
mrtommy- Glad RK and I could help you see the light :)!
Yeah - no wonder the Bears thought he was going to be the next Mcmahon .. or better.
I hope Cutler doesn't disappoint the bears again.
Peyton Manning also played really well as a freshman in 1994 becoming the starter after Todd Helton and Jerry Colquit got hurt.
Tee Martin won a national title his 1st year as a starter after almost never playing behind Manning the year before.
RK- Was Manning the first True Freshman to play QB that year for the vols?
If I'm not mistaken.
Colquit was a junior who had played behind Heath Schuler. He was injured in the opener.
Todd Helton was a redshirt freshman who got injured in game two.
So it came down to two true freshmen Peyton Manning and Brandon Stewart.
Stewart later transfered to A&M and became the starter there for a short period of time.
Of course Todd Helton quit football all together and is now a lifetime .320 hitter in the majors.
666
RK- It was just a little bit of trivia, you mentioned Brandon Stewart, which i'm pretty sure he played before Peyton did. It all happened in the first game of the year against UCLA. Colquit started then was out with Season ending knee injury followed by Helton followed by Stewart and then Manning, if I remember correctly. One of the worst games I have ever seen for losing QB's.
yuck, let's move along
WERK have you ever done sports radio?
WERK definitely has radio show experience in Chattanooga.
Eddie,
I think they shuffled Stewart and Manning in for a game or two before Manning won out.
Also, Stewart helped UT win the national title in 1998 by knocking off and undefeated #1 Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game.
Sports radio to clarify.
I worked in radio from 1997-2000 while working on my masters at UTC.
Agreed RK. I was just going with the literal rotation of the QB's in the UCLA game. Most people have completely forgotten about Brandon Stewart. I did forget about him knocking off K-State.
I'd like to hear you do sports radio. You have incredible recall. If you have a good radio presence I'll hire you for the job.
So yes, I have radio experience and it was a lot of fun, but in Chattanooga where it's all UT, UGA and Bama.
That would be the negative...that and the pay.
Side Job RK. I would love to cover HS Football in Chattanooga.
Eddie,
I did the Red Zone for 3 years and that was a lot of fun...however for a 21-23 year old, it killed my Friday nights.
I love the redzone. At, 21-23 not so much, but 30+ it's all up my alley! Friday nights are for rest now, especially with 2 small girls.
For those not from the Nooga, the Red Zone was a weekly HS football radio show that runs from 8-11 on Friday nights.

Y'all take care. I'm off to pick up a check for the company. I'll check back in an hour.
Happy Collis Campbell Day, too!
j-z, the Voit football was the only choice if you really wanted some backyard football bruises. The ball often created as many as the other team. Catching one of those things when it was cold was like catching a pointy rock.
On another topic, my sister-in-law and family are moving from Texarkana to Atlanta this week. Needless to say, I can't get "Eastbound and Down" out of my head. Speaking of which, where's Buford been?
New thread up, which I think everyone but me already knows.
