Auburn lands another commitment

DL Kenneth Carter of Greenville High has made a verbal commitment to play tackle football at Auburn beginning in 2010.

We know this because our friends at AuburnSports.com, AuburnUndercover.com and ITAT say so.

Carter stands 6-foot-5 and weighs approximately 270 pounds. He was a late bloomer in a sense -- ie wasn't a game-changing element until 2008 -- and only recently began receiving offers from big schools. We know Ole Miss, Kentucky and Southern Miss are highly interested.

ITAT believes Alabama and Clemson, among others, have offered scholarships.

Both Scout.com and Rivals.com rate Carter as a three-star prospect (out of five).

Here's a look at Auburn's array of commitments:

OL Shon Coleman, Olive Branch, Miss.
LB Jake Holland, Pelham HS
ATH Shaun Kitchens, Atlanta, Ga.
K Cody Parkey, Jupiter, Fla.
WR Jeremy Richardson, Springville HS
LB Jawara White, Troy
LB Jessel Curry, Buford, Ga.
CB Jonathan Mincy, Decatur, Ga.
DE Joel Bonomolo, Fullerton, Calif. (juco)
S Demetruce McNeal, College Park, Ga.
DB D.J. Howard, Lincoln HS
WR Antonio Goodwin, Atlanta, Ga.
OL Chad Slade, Moody HS
DL Kenneth Carter, Greenville HS

Back in the day when I was a student at Auburn I did some contract work for Baileys / Flying Saucer / Fox and Hound (They are all owned by the same company).

I had to visit their branches in SouthWest.. Montgomery, Atlanta, Columbia, Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston Salem, Johnson City, Nashville etc once a month. Fun times.

The hardest part usually was telling the cab driver what hotel to take me to. The goddesses were always very friendly. They would tell me what city I was in. Weekends over that time are a little ... hazy.

Digger - I MAY be coming back to Alabama in September to go to a game with my sister. If so, I'll be by myself, but if you're not afraid to be alone with me I'll make another beer run. We can meet in a public place if that will make you feel safer.

Anybody see/hear where Chris Vernon and Clay Travis trashed F-bum's callers for being so dumb? One of them actually challenged any 5 of them to a spelling bee. Apparently, the callers spent all day yesterday being irate at being called dumb, but ended just validating the insult. Vernon came on B'ham's version of The Roundtable today and said that Charles from Reeltown was the only caller who had any sense. He's the one who regularly threatens to give F-bum a "country-boy ass-whuppin'". Vernon was pretty hilarious talking about the whole thing.

That Roundtable out of B'ham is the most hypocritical, juvenile group on the radio today.

Aero, sounds like you didn't suffer too much with that job! I've been to all three of those. I like Flying Saucer the best, by far.

Had to take a cab back to the hotel from Flying Saucer last week, truth be told.

Unless they have a direct tie to a school, most reporters and columnists aren't fans. They're not supposed to be -- ties or not. They are easily jaded by time and experience. They've heard too many coaches' lies and doubletalk, seen too many kids that probably shouldn't have gotten in school, seen too many agendas. But they've see good kids, too, and run across coaches that do the right things and people that truly act in the best interest of their schools.

Then, there's fans, who spew venom and have unreal expectations. Like me. But I know who I am, who they are, and that I don't like them.

Monica, I completely agree, but if cruising around B'ham between 10-2, it's them or Jim Rome on the sports front. I flick between both or listen to the Ipod. At least the Roundtable guys have guests that are relevant to SE football.

By the way, Chris Vernon and Clay Travis are not the hosts of The Roundtable here. Chris Vernon hosts a show in Memphis and Clay Travis is a writer based in Nashville. I just thought it was funny that two guys from outside the state both found F-bum's callers to be so stupid. I confess to listening to F-bum for a few minutes yesterday to hear his callers defend themselves. I was laughing out loud! They couldn't form complete sentences, much less make them grammatically correct.

2:31 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I said the Roundtable out of B'ham and I think that show is actuallly called The Opening Drive. The one with Jay Barker on it. YUCK.

I know y'all are happy I cleared that up!

Monica, if you think The Opening Drive is hypocritical and juvenile, then I can't wait to hear what you actually think about The Roundtable in question. It is much worse. At least The Opening Drive has Al Del Greco. I still contend that the best show in B'ham is D&B. Of course, that's not saying much, I guess.

AUNugget, I don't think you could stage that level of stupidity. In fact, every time I've ever listened to that show, I've been stunned at how dumb most of the callers are. They are about 95% Bammers, but there are a few AU fans calling in who don't sound much smarter.

2:39 PM
Blogger AUNugget said...

yeah, i thought that was kind of the deal though, you get opposing fans to call in and act like a fan of the other team and sound like a complete moron so that it makes the entire fans base look stupid by association.

man, i thought i had that whole show figured out. guess people from my home state are as dumb as the the news says they are.

I guess I have it pretty good here in Atl for sports talk. 680 The Fan has a good line up (though I don't particularly like their morning team). 790 the Zone mid day (11 to 12) is palatable. I've listened to the Montgomery station when I know JGT will be on - Good with JGT - pretty bad without.

If they can sound that stupid and never break character, then they are actually geniuses. Yesterday a guy called in and said he luffed all the callers and they was a big fambly and could Paul set up a big picnic so he could meet all the peoples? Then he wanted to know if Paul thought that they was talkin about him when they said Paul's callers was dumb. This guy did not indicate affiliation with any school. That said, I do think there are some staged calls here and there, but you can usually tell. I would have to listen more to really figure it out and I just can't handle that.

I'm doing my very best to get there FAST.

My daughter is very much like me. College life for me was not that exciting, but that may be due to being occupied by sports. Practice and stuff keeps you occupied most of the time and you miss out on some social life. She wants to be a cheerleader at AU but can't tryout until sophomore year. (AU rule) I will be giving her whatever she needs to make that happen.

Jet,
Why did they have to?

9:20 PM
Blogger Jet said...

The extension of the repeat offender window is problematic for a program that lives on the edge.

Monica,
I hope you can get back here faster than I did. Took me almost three years from the time I decided I wanted to move back until it happened.

Cincy - I've had a countdown clock on the desktop of my computer for the last 9 years. Nuff said.

9:22 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Oh, so it was the extension that bothered them more than the vacating of wins?

9:22 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Braves lose on a two run walk off pinch hit homer. Tough loss.

Blogger Monica said...

Wait has bama filed a NEW appeal? Their first appeal was appealing the vacated wins and not the length of the probation.

9:23 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Oooooh, Monica, that is a long time to wait for something. You have had great patience. Hopefully it happens this December.

9:24 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Cincy ... they're talking about the vacating of the wins, but that's as insignificant as it gets.

9:25 PM

They're appealing their appeal.

Mon-they are not appealing the extension, they are only appealing the vacated wins. Here is the link:

If you've never seen Breaking the Huddle: Integration you so should. It's a fantastic HBO Sports production. "The Civil Rights movement of the 1960's affects the racial status quo of college athletics."

wtc, a name change has to be in the works. Too much excitement and enthusiasm not to be feeling better about the football program. I only hope Chizik is given a chance to replenish the ranks before the 5-19 talk begins. He deserves a chance to show what he can do with a more balanced(and talented) roster. As did Coach Tuberville when he arrived at Auburn.

9:33 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I've said before, if I was at the airport, I wold have screamed at JJ when he got off the plane. Chizik was not even on my radar. I like what he has done so far. He hired the man I wanted Tubbs to hire for OC. The others are very good recruiters. Let's not fool ourselves, AU has to work harder to get up to where we need to be. I strongly feel this group can do it.

Gameday management is key. I think the players will come when the team shows chemistry and looks like it is moving in the right direction. you can't speed up time and time is what we need.

9:43 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

All good points you make, wtc. Chizik wasn't on my hopeful list, either, but he seems to be a hard worker and I think he is doing everything he can to build the program in the right way. I see Auburn struggling some this season when the Tigers' top reserves are playing against LSU and Alabamas' top reserves. I'm afraid this will be where the recruiting and attrition problems from the past few seasons will really show. But, that doesn't mean AU can't win those games, I just think that a few breaks will have to go Auburns' way(TO's, penalties against the other team, etc)to even things out.

10:01 PM
Blogger Jet said...

What more could we ask for at this point?

More commitments? We're still in the game with our prime targets.

WTC is right ... now we need some positive results from coaching.

10:07 PM
Blogger wtc said...

It took me awhile to read the earlier posts, but you guys nailed it on the recruiting stuff. If the coach thinks the guy fills the need, then great. Go get him and don't look back. Each coach must believe they can make these guys into winners and then go out and prove it.

It makes for great headlines to get commits now, but the kid still has to perform and get into school.

10:12 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I still think it is funny that the kid from Millbrook, who might very well be a great HS player, is the #1 rated CB on Rivals and he came out and admitted on the local morning show he hasn't played CB since the 9th grade. I am not knocking UAT for getting him, but fans using Rivals to justify him as the 'top CB' is ridiculous.

well, if we can't do it better, we can at least slant it in Auburn's favor ;-)

Jet....I agree. We are in as good of shape as should resonably be expected, with a chance to do very well in recruiting if these guys can coach. CGC and Co have done a great job unifying the AU fans with old fashioned values/work ethic and some erratic splash.

I've read that the off season conditioning was turned up several notches. That will help with lack of depth.

We soon get to find out how well these coaches are at teaching schemes, putting the right players in position and game day coaching.

I seems to me that we have more talent than folks are giving us credit...we are just missing depth. Let's see what happens in games if these coaches can get the offense to produce even a little and give the defense a break.

depressed....even though your name is so familiar...I keep getting visions of Eyore. It's time to change the name. Tubs is gone now and the whining should go with it.

Hoopie-I concur with your assessment of the whining by AU fans should have left with Tubbs. I always hated being the underdog. That meant we were supposed to lose and we were looking to upset the other team. I want a target on our back and then go out and mash some teams into submission.
