Auburn lands another commitment

DL Kenneth Carter of Greenville High has made a verbal commitment to play tackle football at Auburn beginning in 2010.

We know this because our friends at AuburnSports.com, AuburnUndercover.com and ITAT say so.

Carter stands 6-foot-5 and weighs approximately 270 pounds. He was a late bloomer in a sense -- ie wasn't a game-changing element until 2008 -- and only recently began receiving offers from big schools. We know Ole Miss, Kentucky and Southern Miss are highly interested.

ITAT believes Alabama and Clemson, among others, have offered scholarships.

Both Scout.com and Rivals.com rate Carter as a three-star prospect (out of five).

Here's a look at Auburn's array of commitments:

OL Shon Coleman, Olive Branch, Miss.
LB Jake Holland, Pelham HS
ATH Shaun Kitchens, Atlanta, Ga.
K Cody Parkey, Jupiter, Fla.
WR Jeremy Richardson, Springville HS
LB Jawara White, Troy
LB Jessel Curry, Buford, Ga.
CB Jonathan Mincy, Decatur, Ga.
DE Joel Bonomolo, Fullerton, Calif. (juco)
S Demetruce McNeal, College Park, Ga.
DB D.J. Howard, Lincoln HS
WR Antonio Goodwin, Atlanta, Ga.
OL Chad Slade, Moody HS
DL Kenneth Carter, Greenville HS

I requested info from Tailgate Guys to get an idea of costs.

Package that includes a 10x10 tent, 5 chairs, one 6' table with tablecloth is $1775 per season.

Package that includes a 20x20 tent, 15 chairs, three 6' tables with cloths, two 100 qt ice coolers wi/ice and paper products is $4275 per season.

This is without any food - the food is quite pricey.

My kids don't know how good they've got it - wait til they get my bill for our next tailgate!

I have no problem with them doing this tailgate thing, but isn't most of the enjoyment doing it yourself and being at your spot for a long time before and after the game? This just does not interest me at all, but i'm sure there are some that it will interest. JMO.

I haven't ever seen anything like that, but would be interesting if anyone could dig it up. I know we have had some very highly ranked kids who never met their potential and some fairly low ranked kids who became super players.

No offense to the 740am radio crew this morning, but Chizik got the job at Auburn because of one man, Pat Dye. I got further confirmation of that this weekend. Dye was pounding his fists for Chizik. It had nothing to do about Chizik being tight with Jay J.

Monica, sometimes an ESPN guy or a SI guy will do flashbacks to certain teams and their recruits and rating for a year. Typically 4 years later. I've never seen it done for ALL teams though. Usually 5 overrated and 5 underrated.

I agree, the tailgate thing is fine as long as its in one little square. It seems very pricey. I like doing my own thing. Plus I know many fans that hang out and tailgate bringing their own flavor and spots for years to come.

Its all about a business idea, maybe it works and maybe it doesnt. Kind of like the on campus bike-tandem chinese bucket guys, the ones who pedal you around while you sit in the back of an attached seat. Make note, the seats are for small people, lol. I have never ridden in one, but my two buddies did and they looked liked they were smushed in a clown car.

I know for a fact that the national Rivals/Scout guys make the star assessments generally without input from the team-related sites.

Take the guys from AuburnSports, a Rivals.com affiliate, for instance. One of them watches a lot of high-school games. What he sees on the field generally means nothing to the guys in Nashville who decide how many stars a kid gets.

I'm here to tell you that most of those national guys are entrepreneurs ... not writers, reporters or football guys.

Mon....In 2007 I developed a spread sheet that developed each team's projected end of year ranking by the weighting the Fr-Sr classes on a sliding scale 1-4 multiplier times each classe's ranking. Lowest # would indicate the team that should have the best team in CFB that year. My rationale for weighting was that Seniors played 4 times more of a role than freshmen.

In 2007, the 2003,4,5 and 6 classes were evaluated. Tennesee and Miami were awful compared to their recruiting, VWA and VaTech were great. USC, Fla, UGA and AU were average. UAT was slightly below average.

The issue that seperated the good/average performers from the poor.......attrition(pros,grades,legal,injury,etc).

9:08 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

What if those entrepreneurs are pro-Alabama?

9:14 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, believe me, but the star system is shady and there is strong evidence around that suggests certain schools get preferential treatment when it comes to their commitments.

That's why I pay little attention to the stars. I pay attention to which schools offered the kid. That's the best indicator in my mind ... but still would "miss" on guys like Dontarrious Thomas and Sen'Derrick Marks.

9:16 AM
Blogger michael said...

Stewart Mandel's "Bowls, Polls, and Tattered Souls" has an entire chapter devoted to recruiting. I highly recommend it.

One of the interesting things is how recruiting classes at certain schools are artificially inflated because of the school's stature. If Notre Dame and Nebraska are interested in player X, then the websites assume he is a good player.

The book also pointed out some accusations that the recruiting gurus actually try to steer recruits towards schools of their choice. Allegedly Lemming told Myron Rolle to go to Notre Dame, and he was making a horrible choice going to FSU. Kind of off the subject, but interesting stuff.

9:17 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Some of the stuff you all discuss being anti-Auburn is bogus in my mind.

I'm with you on the star system. I'm unbiased ... and I see it clearly.

9:17 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

These entrepreneurs are pro-something. Everyone has a bias. I refuse to believe anybody is completely innocent of favoritism. I also believe that said entrepreneurs let what coaches offer these prospects sway them a little bit on their rankings, based on how they feel about said coaches ability to judge talent.

9:18 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

THT- I like those sites and many others do as well. They feel a void that some other places cannot when it comes to covering your favorite team. If you're getting upset on how they rank a player, it should not matter. You either have a good coach that can evaluate talent and recruit them to your school or you don't. Proof is in the pudding and on the field. It was Tubs undoing in my opinion.

9:22 AM
Blogger michael said...

I don't think the websites are anti auburn in that they want Auburn to fail. They probably think trusting the bigger programs is the best way to go about ranking recruits.

You have to admit, at this point if Auburn found a guy they really liked and were the only team to offer him, and Alabama found a guy they really liked and offered him, which recruit would you assume is better? You would probably guess the higher profile more recently successful program is picking up better players. Thus, Alabama recruit gets a bump. It's a lazy way to rank recruits, but probably not as horribly inaccurate as I would like to believe.

JGT....Rivals gets caught favoring Bama on a regular basis. Someone on here pointed out another minor "adjustment" the other day. It takes a paranoid constant checking of their info b/c when it changes, the old data disapears.

I live in Ga and rarely see the actual printed editions of the MA or the BN. I get a copy of the BN several times a year and always take note that the Bama writeups are much more plentiful and take priority placment on the pages. Of course my BrothertheBammer says the same regarding the MA(or The Montgomery Auburner as he calls it.)

9:27 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

One thing about a star system though, it doesn't tell you how mature a kid is, or how well he is going to handle college academics, lifestyle, etc. Certainly as a guide they're probably useful, and for the people that subscribe they are a determination of their school's "greatness". But it's all just a guess. Some more educated than others, but still a guess.

Mr.T....After I completed my "analysis", ran smack into attrition and realized the subjective reasons for such. I quit analyzing and also lessened my blame on all coaches. There is soem stuff that is just beyond the coach's ability to control.

SoCal has low attrition. For a long time they have had their pick of any recruit along the entire Pacific Coast which helped limit attrition.

UGA has experienced an unnatural OL attrition for the past 5-6 years. Is that CMR or Stacy Searls fault? 2ea. 4 star OL starters @ UGA that graduated HS with my daughter had career ending injuries by their RSSo year.

Last week was the first time my buddy had gone to a Flying Saucer. His jaw just about hit the floor when he saw the beer selection. It did hit the floor when he saw the waitresses (known as Beer Goddesses). Their uniforms do not suck.

Recruiting 17 and 18 year old kids is non-scientific, not really an art and is a hit and miss proposition at best. But if their is a buck to be made their is someone out there to grab it. And with overzealuos fans with a buck it is now big business

My son informs me that you cannot buy a decent scotch in the state of Alabama. Anyone know of a good brand that can be purchased here?

And I am not going to think about how my 22 1/2 year old son knows this.

I am a big fan of McCallan. the 12 yr old is only 50-60 bicks and is very good. Once you get up in the 18-20 year olds you can expext >100 bucks

Sean...we are going to have to Indian Leg Wrestle to settle this Pabst debate. Either that, or I'll have to stab you with a broken bottle. Your call.

Harrison..If you like Balvenie, you'll like Buchanans...for same $$$.

Hoopies favs:

Scotch: Johnny Black or Buchanans

Wine-Merlot: Smoking Loon, Celler 8
or Bogle

Beer: Yeungling, Killians or Bud Select.

We have a pizza house that serves Pabst on tap. Similar to Harrison's first traditional tailgate beer being a Miller High Life, our neighbor demands that the first pizza house pitcher be Pabst.

1:12 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I really don't have issue with PBR. My favorite beers are either Sam Adams or Fat Tire Amber. I like a whole slew of others but those are at the top of my list currently.

I'm also a big fan of the Pinot Noirs. Liquor is good, if I had to choose I'm a dark rum guy.

For wine I like Yellow Tail Shiraz. Found out one of the easy ways to find a decent wine is to check on the bottle for the alchohol%. Over 12 doesn't have an afterbite. Well it's not supposed to.

if you are ever in ATL, go to a place in decatur called the brick store pub. pick one of your favorite types of beer (ie stout, amber, ipa) that you have never heard of and i guarantee you will have a new favorite beer.

they also have a nice scotch selection.

Pearl is still around, but it's hard to find outside of Texas. Haven't seen Red, White and Blue in a long time.

Speaking of Texas beers...Love me some Shiner...Never had one of theirs that wasn't tasty.

I don't need a vendor to find my hate of UAT.

1:30 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Although I definitely appreciate the finer beers, you gotta drink PBR when hitting the fine establishments on Broadway in Nashville. Also, if drinking on the lake all day, I'm drinking something light (usually spelled L-I-T-E).

If working up some primo UAT hate, bourbon and coke is excellent, particularly if just prior to (and after) entering J-H. I actually only drink bourbon and coke during football season, and it's usually DC these days.

1:31 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Jet, did you find any hate while being a vendor?

Just pour me a plain old ice cold Miller High Life and I am fine. I have tried many high gravity and such beers but have really not found one I care for that much.

Do like a cold Yuengling occasionally - but darn they are expensive here in Georgia.

Will drink a few Daiquiris and Margaritas while at the beach.

At Auburn drank a swimming pool full of Pabst Blue Ribbon - bought from Big Blue Package Store (long ago torn down). I was a good customer - so much so they let me run a month to month tab. Seems like you could get a case of Pabst in returnable bottles for about $1 a six pack with bottle return.

Man - Those were the days.

Big ... Blue ... Package ... Store ... I'm not sure I'm aware of such an establishment.

But if I were, I'd bet it would been isolated on a little hill in an area that probably very developed now.

That is, if I could remember such things.

Nugget ...

F-bomb ... a graduate of UT ... he's not a fan of UAT ... he loathes them as much as anyone ... he knows, though, where his advertising $ comes from ... more than anything he's a provocateur ... whatever stirs the pot ... whatever gets him attention and $, that's what he's for ... the joke is actually on the regular callers, they're either too dumb to realize or don't care because they get to poke their chests out at their idiot friends.

When he was a reporter, he was good ... he broke stories on ex-UAT hoops player Bobby Lee Hurt, who was paid by his HIGH SCHOOL out of the Coke machine funds. No telling what it took UAT to get him to come there.

He transitioned into being a columnist -- a maverick, who started believing in his celebrity, and he's morphed into what he his today. He believes in little except himself and his ability to make $. He's a very smart guy, who has traded his ability for fame and infamy. Hope he likes it.
