SEC championship game staying in Atlanta
Hey everyone. Here's a short note to let you know that the Southeastern Conference and the Georgia Dome have extended their contract for the league's football championship game.
The SEC now is contractually obligated to play in Atlanta through 2015.
That seems fine to me. Atlanta is somewhat centrally located and the dome, while not exactly state-of-the-art anymore, is clean. It's also easily accessible via MARTA.

Maybe LaLa will have the B'ham dome ready by then...
But But But there is going to be a dome in bham....
How many is the dome supposed to hold in Bham when it's built?
Eddie - How did you know that was my new fave show?
Was about to post this on previous thread:
Salsa starts to weaken,
and that's a shame!
For 'Bama's pluck and grit
would have writ his/her name in crimson flame!
I have always thought Bama's fight song lyrics are about as bad/cheesy as you can get. "Hit your stride" is such a great line that they used it twice. I guess Bama's race-walking team will be going for a 13th mythical championship this year! (sponsored by Stride Rite shoes).
i'm a pretty good guesser. I was right, wasn't I?
I saw the first episode and have the other one's DVR'd. Looks good.
Eddie,
I would link an article from al.com about it - but I don't want to soil Jay G's blog with such links.
It's initial configuration would be 57,500 seats expandable up to the 70k range.
Probably good enough for the Classic and the PJB, maybe not so much for the SECCG.
Unfortunately by the time it is completed, it will have to serve as a minimum security detention facility, to house current and former county commissioners, the current mayor and city council, and associated cronies.
Standing Applause for Scott!
Scottie, is the new pic from the Priest show?
I love the SECG in ATL.
Good one James.
I just don't see the SEC Championship leaving Atlanta. Atlanta is so much easier to fly into and travel for other SEC Members. I could be wrong, but I just doubt it returning to Birmingham.
take Marta, it's SMARTA!
Howdy all. So I saw we got a commit today which is great. Did I also see something about Owens not committing this week?
MARTA = Moving Atlanta's Reeking Transients and Alcoholics
Took the MARTA up toward Buford following the Chick Fil A Bowl. Not again. Ever.
I'm surprised that the SEC's office is still in this cesspool. I imagine it may not be too many more years before that is moved to Hotlanta as well.
Sad to see the place I was born and raised imploding around me. Oh well, if all goes according to plan then come September I will James in Auburn and say bye bye to the Ham for good...
I'm not too concerned about the Marta. I am, however, glad that I can fly in straight from Toronto to watch AU play in SECCG...every year till 2016.
There is next to nothing to do in Birmingham for visiting fans. There are in the ballpark of 20 bars in Buckhead that are all slammed to the gills during the SECCG weekend. I don't see how the game was ever held in the Ham. I hope it never leaves ATL.
I like Atlanta. I wish we could trade South Carolina for Ga. Tech.
Salsa, agreed. Ga Tech / AU was such a great rivalry. Only 1hr 20mns apart!
