Friday chatter

Hey everyone. I have moved south from Cincinnati to Louisville and will be headed home to lava-hot Montgomery on Saturday. The high here today was 75.

I may need to move soon. Not sure I can continue to handle three months of 95-100 degrees every year. It gets old. You current and former Gumpians/Lee Countians know what I mean.

Bryan Matthews, don of AuburnSports.com, reported Thursday that Harry Adams is headed back to cornerback. The move ostensibly was necessitated by T'Sharvan Bell's move back to safety. He had been been at cornerback.

Not sure what to tell you here. I heard nothing but high praise of Adams' receiving skills during spring camp. Everybody knows Auburn needs some playmakers at wideout. Maybe the Tigers' brass is prepared to cast its lot with DeAngelo Benton and Emory Blake.

Today's question: What is Auburn's worst opponent matchup in 2009? Alabama? LSU? Georgia? How about a resurgent Tennessee?

a smidgen more work to be done and then I'll be skeedaddling home, so I'm going to shut down the internets so I can get this work done.

See y'all in a bit from the comforts of home.

re: the championships at wimbeldon
i turned it on in the second set tiebreaker as roddick blew his chance to go up two sets to none from 6-2. i watched the entire rest of the match. i'm not a avid tennis fan, but i always seem to watch the W finals and maybe the finals of the french or US open. today was a marathon watch and i was ready for it to be over so i could go do something else. i like watching when sports "history" is assured of being made. both guys played out of their minds.

fsj, that useless information line was great when you were drunk at 3 AM. we came up with some questions that made them work. that was on the cusp of the innernette boom so they were without yahoo and google. answering that phone had to be one of the worst jobs in AU.

some folks say benton has shown up out of shape and had a rough first few workouts. get him in shape yox.

I would have thought Benton would have been raring to go. He hasn't played since like the late 90s or something. I do believe Blake gets redshirted, but I think Benton players. He needs to use his eligibility before he is eligible for social security.

Auburn Trivia - What returning receiver was rated higher than DeAngelo Benton coming out of high school?

Tim Hawthorne?

Yea, that is it. Terrell Zachary wasn't ranked quite as high, but he was up there too.

Like I say, last season we had the best crappy receivers in the nation. I really hope Troop gets them playing up to their abilities.

Well, it's almost 1 a.m. on a Monday morning in my neighborhood. That means it's...

T-minus 61 days til kickoff.

This is one of those “there’s no debate days” when it comes to determining who we honor. There may have been a lot of outstanding Auburn men to suit up in jersey #61, but none even remotely have been as dominant a player as today’s honoree. The following information is from the Auburn Football Media Guide:

#61 Roger Duane (Zeke) Smith from Uniontown, AL. Zeke won the Outland Award in 1958 and was a unanimous All-SEC and All-American lineman. He played left guard on offense and middle linebacker in Auburn’s 5 man line. His nickname was given to him by his high school coach, who thought “Zeke” ran like Zeke Bratkowski (whose Green Bay Packer card is in my shoebox). It was not exactly a compliment; Zeke Bratkowski averaged -200 yards rushing per season at UGa in the early ‘50s. During his acceptance speech for the Outland Award, “Zeke” said, “Thank you gentlemen for this Heisman Trophy... I mean Outland Award.” He did that twice in 30 seconds.

Although his greatest contributions were on the offensive line, he also was a major force on the AU Defense which held Tennessee to ZERO first downs and MINUS 33 yards of total offense in the 1958 season opener.

HAPPY ZEKE SMITH DAY to all the Hotties.

Warrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr EAGLE!! and GO TIGERS!!!

p.s. we’ve got a great one coming up tomorrow at #60. Another great lineman.

I'm headed to the promised land. My daughter is visiting from Nashville and we are headed to Auburn for the day!

Bad news though, my condo in Auburn was struck by lightning in the storm yesterday and my son lost about $4000 worth of electronics. So my fun trip to Auburn is going to be marred by meeting with the insurance company.

Oh well, a bad day in Auburn is better than a good day anywhere else!

He's doing ok. He's drinking and peeing, which is good. He doesn't eat much at all and all he'll eat is his Canine Carryouts treats.

isn't it funny how you praise your dogs/kids for such silly things? Tucker learned pretty quickly not to 'go' in the house. now if we can get him to stop scratching at every closed door we'll really be doing something!

Sully (12 lbs) was trampled by a big dog a couple years ago. it broke the head of his femur clean off and required surgery. when they showed us the x-rays my wife lost it. it took months for him to get back to normal. he's just now back to walking w/o any limp.

Hey peeps.

We're going to get back on our regular schedule today. I'm back from vacation for good.

I think today's thrust will be some comments from Gene Chizik. I'm going to finish transcribing that marathon interview I had with him last month.

I also owe you a Trooper Taylor coaching snapshot.

We also need to have a Campfire.

It's getting to be that time of year!
