Friday chatter

Hey everyone. I have moved south from Cincinnati to Louisville and will be headed home to lava-hot Montgomery on Saturday. The high here today was 75.

I may need to move soon. Not sure I can continue to handle three months of 95-100 degrees every year. It gets old. You current and former Gumpians/Lee Countians know what I mean.

Bryan Matthews, don of AuburnSports.com, reported Thursday that Harry Adams is headed back to cornerback. The move ostensibly was necessitated by T'Sharvan Bell's move back to safety. He had been been at cornerback.

Not sure what to tell you here. I heard nothing but high praise of Adams' receiving skills during spring camp. Everybody knows Auburn needs some playmakers at wideout. Maybe the Tigers' brass is prepared to cast its lot with DeAngelo Benton and Emory Blake.

Today's question: What is Auburn's worst opponent matchup in 2009? Alabama? LSU? Georgia? How about a resurgent Tennessee?

I say La Tech. A new coaching staff, a new offense, and still no #1QB going up against the team whose coach wanted the AU gig.

Ok, not really, but I refuse to acknowledge any SEC rivals as the "worst opponent matchup".

The worse matchup is with FL in the championship game in ATL.

How about that!!!!

I sure Harry Adams would rather play WR. He still can, it just may be another season. Cross training early in one's career can reap benefits later.

Yes Jay us Gump/Lee Countians know exactly what you mean about the temp. I will be posting from sunny Gulf Shores for the next few days. The high today is a just 98 degrees. I may need to wear long sleeves so I can feel like I'm at home.

The WV games scares me even without Pat White. Devine is still there right? I have never seen anyone make our defense look that slow.

Overall, I'll say Ole Miss. Their balanced offense is the type that has given Auburn fits recently, and Snead is a helluva QB. Offensively, until proven otherwise, Auburn struggles with most anyone. LSU and Alabama could be there, hard to tell how their QB play will pan out.

Do you think Tennessee is going to be resurgent?

Jet....want cool summers? Check out Highlands, NC. Low ...tacky, tourist factor and sweet temps.

I'm gonna wimp out on the toughest matchup prediction. Toughest matchup? NOT Tenn. Ala, UGA, OMiss and LSU are different but have generally equal talent. Not counting injuries, it seems that coaching and preparation may make more difference than in a normal season.

I'm most afraid of UGA..if CMR ever decides to get mean, he always has a lot of talent. There have been a few UGA fan murmurs regarding such.

I'm a little surprised that they moved him back. After the new guys coming in this fall, they'll have 6 CBs, and Harry makes 7. His speed could be very useful at WR. But that's why the coaches get paid to coach and I get paid to sit at a desk.

The Arkansas game is also going to be a match-up to watch. The QB transfer from Michigan is supposedly going to be the starter this year, he was very highly recruited coming out of HS. Smith, the RB who lit Auburn up last year(besides Noel Devine), returns and you know Petrino will have that offense ready. Playing at Arkansas has always been tough, as well. This is is one of those games that Auburn has to win to have a shot at a winning record.

Memorable quote from the 1996 American movie classic 'Independence Day'

President : "Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day! "

I know there has been some concern over the loss of players during the off season. I have read where we have lost a total of 9 not counting the guys that went pro or Aairon Savage.

Today I read an article on Undercover about the 83 team and it happened to mention how many players that left the team when Dye arrived. It says the number was somewhere between 30 and 40.

Attrition? You don't know attrition!!! Pat Dye showed you attrition!!!

Here is another article that chronicles the departures. Many of of them were after Chizik was hired or in mid january. I think these players jumped the gun and didn't wait to see what Chizik had in mind.

2:01 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Okay. So we are back to Slaughter. Steve, do you know why Slaughter missed the Iron Bowl?

Do you know what reason Tubs gave for him to miss the Iron Bowl.

Do you know where he transferred to?

2:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Aero, I think of players leaving after a coaching change as something that is expected and you just have to take into account. I think after Chizik got his staff in place, a lot of the attrition stopped because they bought into what he was selling.

As for the 3 players recently released from the team, all I have read is it was due to causing a disturbance in a classroom or something. I think this was a case of the coaches drawing the line and I take it as a good thing. My guess is that Fulmer would have still been at UT if he had the good sense to discipline his players.

2:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I thought Slaughter was out for the Iron Bowl because of a family emergency, or at least that is what I believe I read.

2:07 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think the other linemen I was thinking of was Jermaine Johnson, who was never really a member of the team. He went Juco and then signed with Miami I believe. That is another portion of the attrition that isn't counted in these numbers. We lost recruits.

I can assure you, Steve, that on 30th November a LOT of Auburn fans (myself included) knew that Slaughter had applied for transfer.

The official reason for him missing the iron bowl was that he is with his Mother, who is not well. Same reason was given for transfer to Valdosta State.

Auburn is closer to his hometown. (V. State is 2.5 hours, Auburn is 2 hours) However his former HS HC is at V State.

Historically .. half of xCTT's signed 4* and almost all of the 5* never played a single game. So I really don't want to make a separate category for a 5* decommit that's dumber than a bag of rocks.

It's a BEAUTIFUL 4th in the Nation's Capital!

Mid 80's, partly cloudy, low humidity. It's been unusually cool so far this summer.

After watching the parade and visiting the Welsh exhibit on the Mall, we're home preparing brats and burgers and awaiting fireworks.

tonight's dinner will be two deboned stuffed chickens (1 broccoli & cheese) (1 crawfish dressing) from hebert's meats in LA, butterbeans, okra, some type of bread and key lime pie or cherry cheesecake. not all for me of course! i'll share.

then fireworks.

be safe all.

I do think the lack of attrition after Chizik assembled his staff says a lot. I also believe there is value in getting rid of players that don't really want to be at Auburn. Dye did it at Auburn and it worked out very well.

Oh wow, very sad about Steve McNair. Doesn't he have a son that Auburn may be recruiting?

PMarsh is hinting that July may be an AU recruiting month too remember. I don't pay for his site so don't have any more details that that. Sounds like first-rate commits and secondary violations may be abundant.

Blogger boknowsbo said...

Steve McNair, Jr, is a WR in Hattiesburg, MS. He's rated a 3 star by rivals and has not rec'd an offer from AU. I'm a huge Titans fan and grew up in Nashville. Was at the "Music City Miracle" against Buffalo the year we Steve led us to the Super Bowl. Steve just opened a restaurant in downtown Nashville two weeks ago. Nashville will always love him. He was one of the toughest football players to ever suit up in the NFL.

I met Steve McNair twice during my time working in radio and he always came across as a really classy guy.

I just hope that there isn't an even worse turn in this story.

Well, I succumbed to a nap a few hours back. But even there, I kept up the bama hate. I dreamed that I typed an appropriate reply to a post, including the line
"my bama hate grows stronger"
I tried to be cute by repeating the line several times in the post, each one a larger font. To my horror, although the effect was there, it was in the form of about 100 repeated posts, each a larger font. And before I could delete them all (which wouldn't have really helped the thread length), JayGT used his magical erasure to restore sanity to the thread, along with a promise to ban me if I did anything that stupid again.

I'm not making this up. I'm guessing it had something to do with the "font battle" I was waging before my nap with some slides I'm creating in Keynote.

At this point it is all internet rumors, but supposedly AU is going to get @10 commits that weekend. already 2 will come fomthe a dback in GA and a JUCO lineman playing in CA that is from LA. i am sure the other side has heard that and will do something to counter it or at least have the talking points out to lackies (Longshore & Finebaum) to keep UA in the spotlight. I suspect they talk it up and if it doesn't happen, they can talk about how the tricks don't win over 18 years olds.

I sure wish the rumors would go away, but alas, I know they won't. A lot can happen in two weeks. I just don't like the idea that $atan and his REC have access to the game plan. Sort of reminds me of Lee's Special Order 191.

T-minus 62 days til kickoff!

RISE AND SHINE, HOTTIES!

Could it be? Is this the day? Are we really going to honor a long snapper?
Names like Brian Brinsfield and Pete Compton come to mind. But alas, just as on the gridiron, they are destined to pass unheralded through HABOTNville.
(Who knows, perhaps in 20 years we'll be celebrating and remembering the great feats of one from the current plethora of scholarship-awarded long snappers).

But today? Today is reserved for #62, MORRIS SAVAGE!

The great attorney from Walker County was a stalwart on the 1957 National Championship team at Auburn. He was also a member of the 1958 SEC Champions Auburn Baseball team. In 1959, he led the team in home runs with at least twice as many (2) as anyone else on the team. His outstanding achievements were certainly not limited to the athletic fields. He was elected a member of Spades and ODK, and was also recipient of the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Thankfully, he had the good sense to go out of stateto attend law school, lest he be tainted by the corrrupt law of the cousin humpers. Mr. Savage attended Mr. Jefferson's school. receiving his law degree from the University of Virginia and serving as President of the Student Body while in Charlottesville. Mr. Savage is a former AU Trustee and a former board member of the AU Foundation. He also provided legal counsel for Auburn during an "inconvenience" with the NCAA. Oh, did I mention he is also a former President of the Auburn Alumni Association?

HAPPY MORRIS SAVAGE DAY!

Here is an interesting article focusing on the Auburn runningbacks. There are some flaws in the article and some obvious things that I am not sure why anyone would write, but there is also hints of the attitude the coaches are trying to instill in the players, namely, be an Auburn Man and represent the university well.

was that a pic of TR with the imposter that took his ACT for him?
maybe there was a couple of $100s in that handshake for a job well done? i have not seen any bammer sites shoot down the rumor he has left the team never to return. the rumor bammers started that fannin had left the team last week was refuted rather quickly. i would think it would be easy to refute TR's apparent defection if it was not true. i'm hoping AU still gets to beat on him for 3-4 years.

Nice article, Steve.

4:12 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Aeronaut, I really can't blame you. I like the attitude this coaching staff has brought to the plains.

The talent level at Auburn is not nearly as low as some would have you believe. Depth is certainly an issue.

Last year's team was favored to win the west. It wasn't because of a lack of talent. Last year's debacle was more about conflicting philosophies.

The 2007 team was actually very good by the end of the season, although UGA made us look bad. We were still very solid, with the only big disappointment being the loss to MSU.

Auburn will compete this season. I don't think we have the depth or the QB to win the west, but this team will be capable of competing with anyone on the schedule.
