Basic scrimmage notes, 8/15
I'll do this in stages as before.
STAGE ONE
STAGE TWO
STAGE ONE
- Reporters were not allowed access, so all information below is unconfirmed.
- The offense won, 30ish to 28.
- Kodi Burns scored a touchdown from the Wildcat position.
- TB Eric Smith scored on a run.
- QB Chris Todd worked exclusively with the first-team offense tonight. That span lasted approximately six drives.
- QB Tyrik Rollison commanded several drives after that.
- QB Neil Caudle worked "at the end," Chizik said.
- QB Clint Moseley didn't play.
- Todd hooked up with Montez Billings for a red-zone touchdown.
- Mario Fannin said all passes were completed tonight. He approximated the number of passes at 10. Gus Malzahn told me "he wasn't counting," then laughed as he walked out the door. (He was on his way out.) When I asked Todd, he laughed and said he couldn't remember any incompletions.
- Gene Chizik singled out S Daren Bates and DB Demond Washington for their play.
- P Clinton Durst, H Clayton Crofoot and WR John Cubelic have been put on scholarship.
- Semi-confirmed touchdowns:
- Ben Tate run
- Eric Smith run
- Kodi Burns run
- Montez Billings pass from Chris Todd
- Unknown receiver pass from Tyrik Rollison
- Ben Tate run
STAGE TWO
- Malzahn on Rollison: "Tyrik got a lot of reps. We talked about it. We're still evaluating him. We'll continue to do that. He did a solid job. He made a really good on a throw and it went for a touchdown. He held the ball a little long a couple times, but that comes from experience. In high school, you can get away with that. We'll get that corrected."
- Trooper Taylor on Burns: "He caught the ball really well. There's some fundamental things he needs to do really well to get his arm over and not get jammed up and things like that. So it's pretty impressive to see Kodi do what he does out there without very much reps. He has to stay late and come early to work on the releases and things like that because he's still doing the things with the quarterbacks. You've got to appreciate that about a kid like that."
- Daren Bates on how far he's come in a week: "I was lost those first couple days. I got help from Mike McNeil and watching them practice and every night studying the playbook so those two things, put it together, as time goes down the line, I'm going to get better every day because (Tommy Thigpen) is teaching me things and Mike McNeil is helping me out."

SUBSTANCE!
No incompletions? That's impressive.
I guess it's easy when you're the only one looking at the blog...
I hear Tyrik had about a 65 yd td pass
Sounds great. Hope the team holds on to what they did today an moves foward
with gusto
Chizik placed three players on scholarship at a team meeting last night. Receiver John Cubelic, punter Clinton Durst and holder Clayton Crofoot will go from walk-on to scholarship status Monday.
As reported by Evan Woodbery
No ships sinking due to loose lips from this coaching staff.
Saw Wifey and ... HABOTNetta (my new unofficial name for Jay G's offspring) at a local retail establishment known for its variety of products, including having a Subway inside.
They were about to Eat Fresh, it appeared.
Congrats to the new scholarship players, Durst surely earned one but I was skeptical as to what would happen after the stunt he pulled.
I wish I was EATIN' FRESH.
Let's play football!!! Congrats to all the new scholarship football players!!!
"Practice.... Practice.....We talking about Practice man" A.I.
Tyrik has to be number 2
So "Clipboad Caudle" has found a position for his final year. Sad I always hoped he would do better.
Jhag, I think you're right.
Remember thats pronounced "ty-RIK" say 10 times fast!
Tough position for Caudle.
No doubt, Jhag.
P.S. - Jay G ... Wifey spotted me in the HABOTN shirt.
yeah Jay G i hate it for him but your window of opportunity is only this WI_____DE "Got to make Hay while the sun is shining"
I agree Jay got to be hard considering all he has gone through and the amount of time he has spent trying to be nunber 1. But if he applied himself he got something more valuable in getting an education.
Well Caudle should finish his degree in building science this year and be ready to start a career. He wasn't league bound anyway. That's what's it's really about.
I wish him well in whatever he does.
Remember last year when the AU fans were so concerned that the D would be soft b/c they didn't get to practice against a power team? That concern in theory had merit. That statement is not a segue to anything....An idiotic Al.com comment reminded me of the issue.
We can't find Conecuh sauasage in Ga. and it's causing distress. Our consolation was shrimp on the barbie.
This picture of Caudle always leaves me thinking what could've been. I don't know if it's bc of all the injuries or other circumstances, but this kid was among the best out there.

The decision to go with Todd pretty much dictates a decision to go with Rollison as #2. Todd starts this year while Rollison is groomed for next. It wouldn't make sense to put Caudle #2 and then have another QB battle next year and another likely 1 year starter.
Sucks for Caudle.
That's pretty good company Caudle is with in that picture.
Hoopie ...
When y'all quit trying to steal our water, we'll let the Conecuh come back in to Georgia.
I heard that Todd is so accurate he threw 11 passes and completed 12 of them.
AU Bldg Science grads populate all of the executive rolls in the top southeastern US construction companies. They would love to hire Mr. Caudle. In better times, building material sales jobs are great jobs for ex-athletes with technical degrees.
Kodi did well in the wild-tiger (or whatever), Todd and TR got reps and did well. You gotta hand it to these guys...this is making sense.
I have two concerns from this point moving forward: 1) LB depth -Why did the staff wait so long to move Dee Ford to LB? We were talking about that before these guys got on campus; 2) Will CT's arm hold up after he takes some good shots from a live D? I just cant imagine the #2 QB NOT getting a few quality starts this season at some point due to fatigue/injury. Will Tie-RICK be ready for that?
ElTurbo sent me a message ... wondering where Jay Wisner fits in all of this ... and how did Cubelic get a scholly.
The shoulder thing shouldn't be an issue to hard hits. No worse than any other shoulder, that is...
Jet....I live in the Coosa basin. It's Atlanta that wants to do a basin transfer.
Please send the sausage to NW Ga and I'll go open the dam gates. We prefer the smaller ones that are similar to Andouille...yum
There's a good chance of any starting QB going down at some time during the season.
Yea there is always a chance of injury for a QB but like every football player coming back from an injury/surgery, the true test doesnt come until that first big hit. Lets hope the OL can keep those to a bare minimum.
Congrats to the guys earning schollys!!
Daren Bates seemes poised to be the next 2* rated AU player to prove Rivals wrong! He said he was going to do just that. Keep it up Bates!!
CGM should do well keeping CTodd from too many hits by utilyzing wildtiger, inserting TR, running, etc.
The problem will arise when playing a top SEC defense, time is running out and all that other stuff has been called in the game.... we gotta pass and everybody knows it and the other team is blitzing every down. Not sure that we got the athletes just yet to get us through those situations. Genius playcalling would be our best hope at that point.
The Wiz is a junior, right?
These kinds of scholarships go to seniors.
Added a few quotes of interest.
congrats our new scholly players. we have room for a few more deep snappers if needed.
AUnMobilz (Game Time!)
one of my fav youtube vids.. the AI vid is classic... and to this day I bet he still does not get it..
is bate's 4 star all world teammate rod woodson still on bammer's team?
Rollison Express is alive and well. I've been telling yall to get on board for quite sometime.
Look forward to running into some Hotties tomorrow. I'm out of here, see yall later.
don't be so quick to think we've seen the last of NC. todd is one sack away from landing on the bum shoulder and caudle being AU's QB.
to me, "wildtiger" sound kinda lame.
how bout tiger-I?
Dont you guys have anything better to do on a saturday night....Me neither...
I am not overly concerned about an injury to Todd. My guess is that he will be fine at least long enough for Tyrik to become a trusted backup.
The QB position is shaping up as I had hoped: Todd the starter, a young backup, and Kodi is special situations. To me this is ideal for us.
The QB situation seems very clear now. The next thing I would like to see is the number 2 QB to get in for a series or two every game.
Steve, I concur.
I just would like to see us win games.
Hate to say this, but the fact our offense is clickin really means our defense is suckin. Saw where Roof indicated he had to mix and match to put together his defense., True freshman Evans started. True freshmen Bates played with both teams. (sounds like he should be good). We had several others that didn't play or were banged up. I'm worried about the D.
I'm watching Marks on the D line for Tennesee Titans play. Man I wish he was in Auburn now.
I have been a little worried about a defensive letdown this year. If Marks, Powers, and Blackmon had returned, things would look a lot different. I think we still have a good defense, but it won't be where we were the last couple of years.
Do we know if Montez Billings is eligible?
Is Billings' issue university related or Coaches' dog house related?
Have any of you seen film on Kyle Prater? Coach Troop is going all the way to Ill to go after this kid. He reminds me of a thicker Randy Moss. Nation's #1 receiver and ya never know.
Sean, I can't answer that.
Billings was either brilliantly evasive or incredibly out of touch when we last talked with him about academics.
I am continuously puzzled as to why Auburn has so many academic issues, and especially why we can't seem to get our recruits through the ncaa clearinghouse, while that school who shall not be named, never seems to have these issues. They even got Dre Kirkpatrick in school, and he took a correspondence course this summer to qualify. amazing.
Funny Monica, Randy Moss was Prater's favorite football player in his younger years. I hear he is a big USC lean. I think he has family that lives in Hsv.
Since Billings graduated, you think if it is school related it is because he didn't enroll or didn't take enough hours? It is quite a mystery.
i'm not too concerned about the athleticism on D just the utter lack of experience due to the depth issues. if AU is going to be thin anywhere, D is the best place. at least this HC knows a smidge or two about D (unlike his predecessor's knowledge of O).
speaking of tubs, is he still going to be on espnu some analyzing?
