I swear RK is going down a 1996 thru 1998 roster with all the honorable mentions he has listed :)!

We know tomorrow has to be Dameyune Craig day, so i'm curious to see what Honorable Mention RK will list.

10:39 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Actually my honorable mention tomorrow will probably be Greg Taylor, but I haven't decided yet.

However, it's easy to pick out players from the late Bowden/Early Tub era because some of them were just not SEC level players, but that somehow made them memorable to me.

Happy Campbell/Slack day!

1989 was my freshman year on the Plains. I knew absolutely nothing about AU football and growing up 45 mins from UGA, I knew of no RB greater than H. Walker. But after a few weeks on campus I quickly learned that Reggie Slack was The MAN!!

how about Reggie Slack's 4th down 'desperation heave' to Shane Wasden to beat the hated Florida Gators in 1989. that was the 50th anniversary game for Jordan-Hare stadium. Fyffe's call on that play still gives me chills.

Dameyune Craig, fo' sho.

11:55 AM

I had to Google him. He played 1993-1997. I didn't attend my first game until 1999.

12:00 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

All joking aside, Craig has to be the guy for tomorrow.

Nobody yelled more at Daniel Cobb than I did at games. That guy thought he could force a pass into any situation, and it didn't work out so well.

That being said, i'd take him as the starter last year over anyone else who played. At least he could get the ball downfield.

12:02 PM
Blogger Jet said...

My favorite Cobb memory was him being interviewed live after the Florida win in 2001. He started out talkin' cocky and smack, and then the camera moved off him. It comes back to him and he's Mr. Humble. It's as if TT or someone else slapped him in the head. The tone changed 180 degrees.

12:04 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Luv ... go youtube him ... Dameyune Craig was Auburn's most dynamic QB ever ... in 1997, he was the offense. He deserves to be in the argument for our best ever because of the burden he bore.

12:08 PM
Blogger j-z said...

I think Craig accounted for like 80% of the offense in 97, either through the air or running. When he left, Bowden was doomed.

12:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Without Dameyune Craig in 1997, we don't win 10 games, we don't go to Atlanta and we likely don't even win the 6 games that would get us a bowl bid.

Without Craig, Bowden gets fired a year earlier.

He was our offense that year.

Hmmm, I am listening to James Taylor's Steamroller Blues at the moment, but somehow James Taylor can never seem tough.

1:01 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Steve - he cusses at the end of the live version doesn't he? Isn't that tough enough for you?

1:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Oooh, Norm. I just heard James Taylor cuss. Now I have heard everything.

As most of you know, I work from home in South Carolina. The rest of the group I work for is located near Portland, Oregon. I have been up there numerous times and they refer to were they work as a campus, which I suppose is kind of understandable. There are thousands that work there in a group of 5 huge buildings. But if it is a campus, where is the football team? Somehow every time I hear it referred to as a campus, I want to go there.

1:05 PM
Blogger j-z said...

This is my nominee for last year's theme song.

Thanks to the late and great Lewis Grizzard, I know the difference between "naked" and "nekkid". What is the difference between "cussing" and "cursing"?

1:26 PM

Cursing is for people who don't know how to cuss. They know the words but lack the enthusiasm for it.

Wow... I had the pleasure of meeting Dameyune Craig last year at the Alabama State 6A championship game in B'ham. What a nice guy, very humble and dedicated to all the right things in life. A true Auburn man. He was however smaller than I remember him being in his playing days. I guess football pads do make some look larger than they really are. I sure enjoyed meeting and talking with him.

1:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've learned about cussing vs. cursing, Jet's manhood, and that Peter Frankenschmidt and I are both paranoid about the season.

It has been a varied day.

1:37 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

IV- Craig is actually not that tall. If he is 6'0" tall, he barely is. That is the main reason his pro career was not much more successful. He had trouble seeing over the lineman, but Dameyune Craig is by far my favorite QB of all time and I feel lucky to have known him.

1:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Height it why Pat Sullivan never made it in the pros either.

1:42 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The only complaint I think that one could come up with on D. Craig was that sometimes while trying to make something out of nothing he would keep dropping back and take a huge loss.

My only complaint about DC was that he threw that ball in the SEC Championship Game too perfectly so that Karsten #$^%$#%#$%$ Bailey dropped it.

Also, he didn't figure out a way to keep the ball the entire game.

1:47 PM
Blogger Jet said...

From ITAT prior to the UT game ...

"Senior wide receiver Karsten Bailey says the Tennessee game means a little extra to him because he played so poorly against the Volunteers in last year's SEC Championship Game.

'There were a lot of balls I could have caught in that game,' Bailey says. With a few more catches on some perfectly-thrown Dameyune Craig passes, the normally sure-handed receiver could have helped the Tigers deliver a first half knockout blow to the Vols, who rallied for a 30-29 victory.

KARSTEN %^$^%#$%#$ BAILEY!

1:50 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The SEC title game in 97. I think we had negative 17 yards rushing for the game.

Horrible, however if Brad Ware could have wrapped Marcus Nash up, we win that game, instead Ware bounced off of him and Nash went 70 yards... it didn't help that Antwoine Nolan was toasted a couple of times in that game as well.

1:50 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That 97 team wasn't really that good and I am still amazed it got to the SECCG. Craig carried that team. Yea, he took some losses, but the guy was a pure competitor. I still remember him after the same lineman jumped off sides two plays in a row. Back then the line was taught not to move for an inordinate amount of time when a whistle blew before the snap. Craig walked over to the lineman, slapped him on the butt, and said come on man. The guy didn't get out of his stance while this was going on. I don't think he wanted to mess with Craig.

1:55 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Why don't y'all talk about the 1971 game in Athens for the rest of the thread?

Patrick Sullivan? Really?

I had no idea such a person existed.

1:57 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I've been to all of our SEC title games. The one in 97 was the last time I ever had flags on my car. Some UT fan while I was at the dome pulled them off my car and left them broken by my car.

I don't recall the 1971 UGA game, it's 5 years before my time.

1:59 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Yes, Patrick Sullivan played the position of clipboard carrier during the early Bowden era, but he did indeed wear # 17.

1:59 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- You insulting the team I was a part of hurts. We were good, hell we should have won the SEC Championship game. We had two really bad games, MSU & Florida that year, and an almost disaster in Alabama, but we were a good team. I also understood that Dameyune Craig carried the team, but a lot of great teams have a player carrying the team. The championship game was very bitter sweat to me. At halftime, I was already imagining the big Championship Ring we were getting. In the locker room, we just felt it was our game, but we didn't take advanatage of all the opportunities we he had in the game. Bill Oliver had a great game plan that stymied Peyton Manning, especially bringing every single defensive player to the line of scrimage and not allowing Peyton to pick us apart. That 97 team was much better than the 2000 team, IMO.

2:12 PM
Blogger Jet said...

As I recall, a few dominoes had to fall right for the '97 team to make it.

The first one was the anvil that fell on Gerry DiNardo's head in the 4th quarter in Baton Rouge ... where on two 3rd down plays instead of giving the ball to Cecil the Diesel (who had lit us up for 232) he: a) passed, and b) ran the QB.

Thankfully, Tubs and Ole Miss did us a favor and beat LSU later, because we lost to State in a stinker of a game. Florida was our other regular season loss.

That gave us the opportunity to clinch the West with a win over UAT, which we nearly threw away.

2:13 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eddie,

By far you were closer to the situation than I was, but in 1997 we never had a running game. Bailey, Goodson and Pour had good years in the receiving game, but nothing worked running the ball.

I remember late in the year they burned Demontray Carter's redshirt to try to get something going and even using Fred Beasley as the primary runner at one point, but nothing would work. I think Carter had close to 100 yards vs UGA, but that was about all our running game got all year long if I remember correctly. I think the average was around 70 yards per game.

The Miss State game that you mentioned was one of the worst home games I've ever attended. I have no idea what happened there, but nothing was working at all.

The D was pretty good that year, but without Craig making things happen at QB, my opinion that is a 5-6 or 6-5 team.

No offense was intended, but I do believe without Craig, no matter how well the D played, it would have been a bad year.

2:14 PM
Blogger Jet said...

RK ... Patrick Sullivan aspired to touch the clipboard he was so far down the depth chart.

2:15 PM
Blogger Jet said...

RK ... ask me elsewhere, and I'll tell you what I think happened against State.

2:15 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Jet brings up Cecil Collins, that guy was unstoppable in that game. He was Fred Talley before there was a Fred Talley.

2:16 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Home security systems couldn't stop Cecil the Diesel, either.

2:17 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

That Cecil Collins game was the best performance I have ever witnessed in person by a RB. Why DiNardo ever decided to throw the ball on 3rd down & 4th down, i'll never know. I know that Takeo Spikes went on a piggy back ride trying to tackle Collins during that game.

2:21 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Cecil had 796 yards in three-plus games, broke his leg in the fourth game, and it went downhill from there.

Wiki says he's in prison in Florida until 2014 and Louisiana's waiting on him then.

2:24 PM
Blogger Jet said...

DiNardo, to me, is one of the prime "You Just Never Know" example of coaches.

When he was at Vandy, it looked like he knew what he was doing -- they were appearing more competitive not unlike the way Johnson has them now.

I thought he would steamroll at LSU. Turned out he was a moron.

2:26 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- I don't disagree with your statement, as I said earlier, we were totally a team that was carried by Craig on offense. But with Craig, I think we were a good team and the team believed in themselves. Yes, we had some close games, but most teams do. Unfortunately we had 2 stinkers in there as well. I would argue that the 2000 team is not as good without Rudi Johnson and is close to another 6-5 team.

2:28 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The 2000 team without Rudi is the same 5-6 team from the year before, if not worse. It would depend on Ben Leard.

Leard had a really good 1999, but in 2000 he wasn't the same QB. He was a solid QB, but not as good as the year before.

2:33 PM

Here's a good question for Eddie or anyone in the know...

If Dubose hadn't gone crazy in the last minute of the 1997 game, would Bowden have been fired?

2:36 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- Yes, plans were already in the fold if he would have lost that game. Tuberville would have been at Auburn one year earlier.

2:37 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Bowden was as good as fired when Miss State shut us out the month before the Iron Bowl in 1997...maybe even earlier.

2:40 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Strange how things work out..

Alot of Bama people (and Finebaum for that matter) believe that had Dubose lost to Arkansas the week after the La Tech debacle in 1999 that he would have been canned and Stallings would have returned to finish the year.

2:43 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

For a lot of people the shine was off of Bowden after the 1995 season.

You take the loss to Arkansas and the waxing by Penn State in the Bowl game after 1995 and add it to the 51-10 loss in 1996 to Florida and people were talking about Bowden being gone as early as mid 1996.

2:43 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

What year was it that Housel gave Bowden the extension but announced that they expected better? Was it 1995 or 1996? I can vividly remember hearing it on the radio, but can't remember the year.

2:46 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I'll chime in, too.

Tuberville had been ID'd (and I presume had agreed) as the successor prior to the 1997 LSU game.

They were just waiting for Bowden to crash the plane, which he did a year later.

Had he lost to Bama in the last game, yeah, they would have come gotten him.

Summary Followup:

1. Patrick Sullivan - Yes, clipboard holder. But he married a smoking hot Auburn cheerleader from my hometown of Dothan who was friends with my sister. She was my early 90's Phoebe Cates.

2. Dameyune Craig - See him at the gym here in Mobile once a week. He is not that tall, but still pretty stout. Very nice. I always thought he was one of those Auburn players that had an extra gear and always put the team on his shoulders. Not many players like that.

3. Poll Question for Auburn fans: How many of you wear jerseys to the games?

Last my wife and I had a loud debate in J&M because I wore a blue shirt and she was going to buy me an orange one (i have 100)...lol...

The last time I wore a jersey to a game was 1990. I had a James Joseph #10, and I was 12.

I think Patrick Sullivan played in a couple of games in like 1994 when our holder got hurt.

WERK - I love me some D. Craig, but my knowledge of him is a grain of sand compared to your heavenly orb. I'm recommending we replace the "THT Auburn moment" tomorrow with a "WERK Release" Or maybe we should say a WERK Press Release.

Thanks, WERK!!! We're all counting on you.

Right off hand, I don't remember all the 16s on my list, but D. Craig was undoubtedly at the top.

Can't confirm this just yet, but there is talk that the SEC will be putting new restrictions on fans this season.

They may (somehow) ban you from shooting pictures at games. Or at least attempt to ban you from doing so.

don't worry, WERK. The magical editing powers of JGT will make it fit.

Well, if we can't shoot pictures, we may have to shoot people.

Jay, weren't you supposed to phrase that in the form of a question since you can't confirm it yet?

Did the SEC take away your right to shoot pictures?

The SEC needs to get into the 21st century with the whole social networking thing - they are on the wrong side here IMO.

The Big 10 seems to have gotten this right.

I would like to see how the conference plans on limiting photographs. Are there gonna be SEC camera police in every stadium this year?

Sensi, I am not sure what the 97 team had to do with Tuberville or why you think I am for him. I stand by our coaches and recognize them for their accomplishments. I just don't participate in the foolishness of attempting to assign all the blame to one factor and making decisive comments.

Though this is the crux:

I have the jersey that Mike Neal wore in the 1970 - Pat Sullivan & Archie Manning Gator Bowl game, complete with grass stains. It has never been washed in all these years. My wife and I made it to that game, one of the best football games I have ever seen. It was a thrill a minute. After the game, we went down to see the players. I had made friends with Spence McCracken when he was at Lee H. S. in the Gump. I followed his career at Auburn very closely and his coaching career later. When we talked to Spence, he asked me if I would like a souvenir from the game, I of course said yes. They cut Pat Sullivan's jersey up after the game and Spence let me have a piece of the sleeve. I told him that it was going to make a 7 year old boy at home really happy to have that. That 7 year old boy is now 46 and still cherishes that piece of jersey. When I told Spence that , he said wait a minute. He went back into the dressing room and came back out in a couple of minutes with the jersey that Mike Neal wore during the game. It is the old style open mesh jersey. I have never worn it to a game and never will. It means to much to me and it has a special place in my home. I do admit to wearing it on occasions at home like when I feel we need some extra help in the luck area such as last years IB game. I don't go to as many games as I used to, but if I did, the #40 Mike Neal jersey stays home. A side note for those that may not know. Mike Neal's father Phil is the artist that created Aubie. The cartoon Aubie was on the front of all the home game programs for many years. Sorry about the long post. I got wound up telling about a very special memory in my life.

On the ticket policy, there was a huge uproar over the last few days because they said no one in the stands could use ANY social media (including twitter, facebook status updates, etc.) to "broadcast" any part of the game.

Here are the new pieces from yesterday's release that I assume exonerates us social media types:

"Personal messages and updates of scores or other brief descriptions of the competition throughout the Event are acceptable."

and

"Photos of the Event may be taken by Bearer and distributed
solely for personal use (and such photographs shall not be licensed, used, or sold commercially,
or used for any commercial or business purpose)."

We shall see.

Lowcountry: It's key to point out here that the SEC was attempting to block Twitter updates.

They since have given up that (fruitless) avenue, but it's clear where this thing is headed from a long-term perspective.

4:50 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

No Bearer may produce or disseminate in any form a “real-time” description or transmission of
the Event (i) for commercial or business use, or (ii) in any manner that constitutes, or is intended
to provide or is promoted or marketed as, a substitute for radio, television or video coverage of
such Event. Personal messages and updates of scores or other brief descriptions of the
competition throughout the Event are acceptable. If the SEC deems that a Bearer is producing a
commercial or real-time description of the Event, the SEC reserves the right to pursue all
available remedies against the Bearer.

For the average person, how can updating your facebook status or twittering a score be considered commercial use or intended to provide a substitute for radio, television or video coverage?

Kristina - What you just posted is supposed to be the SEC clarifying themselves. lol

"What this means is you can share “personal messages or updates of scores,” but you cannot distribute photos or video of the event through commercialized social media platforms. You can take pictures and videos, but your distribution is also limited to personal use (person to person, not person to public through commercialized social media platforms)."

It really is disappointing how college football has become such a big business. How many big businesses do you know where the primary participants get paid so little compared to everyone else. Hmmm, college education or $2 Million salary? I'll take B for $2 Million Alex.

4:59 PM

So their argument is since FB advertises on your page, it is therefore commercial and anything posted on there is business related? I don't really think they have an argument to be honest.

WERK, since I don't have your email, I'll just throw these out in public for you to use tomorrow:

Greg Taylor WR -I always thought they needed to get his jersey from the youth section
Daniel Cobb - without Cobb there wouldn't have been a Rudi.
Joe Campbell -CBQB '64-'66 from Pascagoula, MS (don't confuse CBQB with someone who actually plays, which would be CB/QB)

Just a quick plug for your #8 player coming up in 9 days. How about Shayne Wasden- as scottie burns plugged earlier with the game winning catch against UF in 89 (first game I went to and was sitting in that end zone as a 9 year old) Can't think of any other notable #8's in my lifetime and please don't give me Jerraud Powers or Eric Lowe from 94. Just a shameless attempt to get my childhood hero and Troy coach a plug. Not to mention a nice punt returner to be a "small fast white kid" and I think his career was cut short due to a neck injury- could be mistaken about that

5:15 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I don't think they have an argument either. I also wonder if they really even knew what they were asking until they felt the backlash. I'm guessing not.

It's obviously unenforceable and if they understood the technology they were trying to control they would have known it was impossible.

THT,

Seriously, you do a far better job than I'd do with these profiles, there was a reason I didn't go into print media. I enjoy your write ups, because you use sources to find out more indepth on the individual than I can just quoting stats and games.
